TL;DR
- Creature Enamel is a mineable resource — despite the name, it does not drop from creatures.
- It spawns in the alien biome roughly 1,300 to 1,400 meters east of the Lifepod.
- Enamel Husks look like large black masses with white bone-like spikes sticking out of them.
- You need the Sonic Resonator to mine it — it cannot be picked up by hand.
- Best farming spots: 200 to 300 meters southeast of the Alien Ruins near the Needler Nest, and around the Karakorum Power Plant.
- Its only direct recipe use is crafting Enameled Glass, which feeds into the Tadpole Depth Module Mk. I and other advanced upgrades.
Creature Enamel is one of the most misleading resource names in Subnautica 2. Most players arrive at the Alien Ruins, see the Enameled Glass recipe appear in the Fabricator, and then spend way too long wondering which creature they’re supposed to be harvesting it from. The answer is none of them. Creature Enamel is a mineable ore. It grows in rock deposits, not on wildlife.
Once you know what it looks like and where to go, it’s a fast farm. This guide covers the exact locations, how to mine it, what to watch out for, and every recipe it feeds into.
What Is Creature Enamel in Subnautica 2?
Creature Enamel is a raw crafting material described in-game as a hard ceramic coating that forms a dense, impermeable surface layer. It’s a natural biological mineral found on the seafloor and cliff walls of the alien biome. The game’s PDA notes it as being similar to dental enamel in structure — which explains the name — but it comes from mineral deposits left behind by the local ecosystem, not from hunting or killing anything.
Visually, it’s easy to recognize once you’ve seen it. Enamel Husks look like large dark or black lumps of rock with three long white prongs jutting out of them, almost like bone or teeth. They’re distinctive enough that once you’ve identified one, you won’t confuse them with anything else on the seafloor.
Each node drops a few pieces of Creature Enamel when broken. You don’t need large quantities for your first crafting goal — a handful of nodes gives you enough to get started with Enameled Glass.
What You Need Before Farming Creature Enamel
Creature Enamel is gated behind mid-game progression. The deposits are deep, far from the Lifepod, and surrounded by hostile creatures. Make sure you have the following before heading east:
- Tadpole submarine — The alien biome is roughly 1,300 to 1,400 meters east. This is far too far to swim safely, especially with the Collector Leviathan patrolling the trench en route. The Tadpole covers the distance faster and protects you if the Leviathan grabs you. See our full guide on how to build a Tadpole in Subnautica 2.
- Sonic Resonator — Enamel Husks cannot be broken by hand or with standard tools. The Sonic Resonator is the only tool that mines them. You need the standard version — no upgrades required for this specific resource.
- Rebreather — The best deposits are at 200 meters depth or deeper. Without the Rebreather, oxygen drains extremely fast below 100 meters. Equip it before exiting the Tadpole to mine. See our guide on how to increase oxygen in Subnautica 2.
- Heat Tolerance adaptation — Parts of the alien biome involve thermal hazards. Having this active prevents environmental heat damage during the trip. See our guide on how to get the Heat Tolerance trait.
- Tadpole fully repaired — Go in with full hull durability. Keep your Repair Tool ready in case you take damage from the Leviathan or Needlers.
- Completed the Tadpole Pens objective — You receive the Alien Ruins waypoint after finishing the Tadpole Pens quest. Without that waypoint active, navigating to the alien biome is significantly harder. If you haven’t done this yet, check our guide on how to get the Tadpole Pens keycode and open the locked door.
Where to Find Creature Enamel in Subnautica 2
All Creature Enamel deposits are in the alien biome, east of the hot zone and past the Collector Leviathan trench. There is no Creature Enamel anywhere near the Lifepod or the early-game biomes. Here are the confirmed farming locations.

Location 1 — Southeast of the Alien Ruins (Best Spot for First Run)
This is the most accessible and highest-density Creature Enamel location for players who have just reached the alien biome. From the Alien Ruins research base, head approximately 200 to 300 meters southeast, over the cliff edge, and down to the rock formations at a depth of around 200 meters or more.
You’ll find a large concentration of Enamel Husks clustered across the rock pillars and cliff walls in this area. The white prongs sticking out of black rock make them easy to spot even from a distance. Each node breaks apart quickly with a Sonic Resonator blast and drops several pieces of Creature Enamel.
The catch: this area is patrolled by Needler Mangos. These hostile creatures will attack if you get too close or linger too long near their territory. Stay low, move between nodes quickly, and don’t park directly in the middle of the nest. The deposits on the outer edges are just as productive and much safer to farm than the ones deep in the nest cluster.
For your first run, you don’t need to push into the densest part of the nest. The outer deposits give you enough Creature Enamel to craft the Enameled Glass you need for initial upgrades without unnecessary fights.
Location 2 — Karakorum Power Plant Area
The Karakorum Power Plant region is a secondary Creature Enamel farming zone further into the alien biome. Enamel Husks appear on the outer cliff walls surrounding the facility and in the surrounding trenches.
This area is better suited for bulk farming runs once you’ve already upgraded your Tadpole with the Depth Module. Combined with the Celestine deposits in the same zone, the Power Plant area lets you run efficient combined resource trips — Celestine and Creature Enamel in one dive. See our guide on how to get Celestine in Subnautica 2 for the full breakdown of that area.
The Power Plant biome is deeper and has more hostile creatures than the southeast Alien Ruins spot. Come here once your gear is upgraded rather than on your first Creature Enamel trip.

How to Mine Creature Enamel
Mining Creature Enamel is straightforward once you’re at the right location:
- Approach an Enamel Husk — the black rock mass with white prongs sticking out.
- Equip the Sonic Resonator.
- Aim at the dark base of the deposit, not the white prongs. The geometry of the prongs can make targeting awkward if you aim at the tips. Focus your shot on the black rock mass underneath for a clean hit.
- Fire a Charged Blast. The node shatters and drops Creature Enamel pieces into the water.
- Collect the pieces and move to the next node.
You do not need an upgraded Sonic Resonator. The standard version handles Creature Enamel just fine. A second shot is sometimes needed if the first blast hits the prongs at an awkward angle instead of the base — this is the most common mining mistake with this specific node type.
Creature Enamel stacks at 1 per inventory slot, so it won’t eat through your space quickly. Attach a Portable Locker to your Tadpole’s rear hardpoint before the trip to bring home a larger haul per run. For more carrying capacity tips, see our guide on how to increase inventory space in Subnautica 2.
How to Deal With Needler Mangos
Needler Mangos are the main threat during Creature Enamel farming at the southeast Alien Ruins location. They patrol the Needler Nest in groups and will attack if you enter their territory or hover too close to their cluster.
Here’s how to farm around them safely:
- Start on the outer edges of the nest. There are plenty of Enamel Husks on the fringes that are outside active patrol range. Get what you need there before risking the inner deposits.
- Keep moving. Needlers are less aggressive when you’re not hovering in one spot. Mine quickly, collect, and move to the next node without lingering.
- Return to the Tadpole between mining runs. Refill oxygen, assess the patrol pattern, and re-enter only when the coast is clear. The Tadpole also absorbs damage if you get caught, protecting you from a direct one-hit death.
- Use a distraction flare if needed. Throw one away from your mining location to pull the Needlers in the opposite direction and buy yourself time on richer node clusters.
How to Craft Enameled Glass
Enameled Glass is the only direct recipe that uses Creature Enamel, and it’s unlocked once you reach the Alien Ruins and activate the Fabricator there. The recipe appears automatically in the crafting menu once you arrive.
Enameled Glass recipe: 1x Creature Enamel + 1x Glass.
Glass is made from Quartz at the Fabricator. See our guide on how to get Quartz in Subnautica 2 if you need more. Quartz is abundant and shouldn’t be a bottleneck — Creature Enamel is the limiting ingredient here.
Enameled Glass is described in-game as reinforced glass built to withstand greater barometric pressure at depth. It’s a mid-game milestone material. Once you’re crafting it, you’ve crossed into the true deep-sea phase of Subnautica 2’s progression.
What Is Creature Enamel Used For?
Creature Enamel’s sole direct recipe is Enameled Glass. But Enameled Glass itself is used across multiple important upgrades, making Creature Enamel a bottleneck ingredient for an entire tier of crafting. Here’s what Enameled Glass goes into:
Tadpole Depth Module Mk. I
This is the most important use. The Depth Module raises the Tadpole’s maximum safe diving depth from 250 meters to 450 meters, opening up the entire lower half of the map. It’s crafted at the Modification Station.
Recipe: 3x Celestine, 2x Enameled Glass, 1x System Chip.
This upgrade is the reason most players need Creature Enamel in the first place. The Depth Module is essential for accessing deeper biomes, and you can’t make it without Enameled Glass. See our guide on how to get Celestine to farm the other key ingredient at the same time.
Advanced Vehicle and Tool Upgrades
Enameled Glass feeds into multiple downstream Tadpole module recipes and tool modifications as you progress further into the game. As more blueprints unlock, Enameled Glass keeps appearing as a required ingredient. Stock more than you need for the immediate recipe. Players who only farm the bare minimum for the Depth Module consistently run out when the next upgrade arrives and have to make another long trip east.
Habitat Modules
Certain advanced base room blueprints also require Enameled Glass as you expand deeper into the ocean. Building a forward outpost near the alien biome eventually calls for reinforced materials, and Enameled Glass covers that requirement. Read our guide on what to build in your base first to plan your outpost layout before heading east.

Tips for Efficient Creature Enamel Farming
- Set up a small Scanner Station outpost in the alien biome. A single powered corridor with a Scanner Station lets you track all Creature Enamel nodes within 600 meters. Combined with Hydroelectric Turbines from a nearby current for power, it turns scattered farming into a targeted loop. See how to set one up in our guide on how to build a Scanner Station. Also grab a Biobed upgrade while you’re setting up — it means you respawn nearby if something goes wrong.
- Combine your trip with Celestine farming. Both resources live in the same alien biome zone. One well-planned run can get you enough of both materials to craft the Depth Module and stock Strontium for the next upgrade tier.
- Aim at the black base, not the white prongs. This single tip cuts your mining time significantly. Prong hits waste shots. Base hits break the node cleanly in one or two blasts.
- Farm extra from the start. Two Enameled Glass units for the Depth Module is the immediate goal, but upcoming recipes keep asking for more. Get five or six units of Creature Enamel on your first run and you’ll avoid a follow-up trip in the next hour of play.
- Don’t push the Tadpole below 250 meters without the Depth Module first. The best Creature Enamel deposits are right at or just past the Tadpole’s crush depth limit. Park above 250 meters and swim to the nodes. Never risk hull damage for one extra hit.
- Check your inventory after every dive. If a node broke but you didn’t pick up anything, you may have hit a Calcite deposit by mistake. Both types of nodes look superficially similar from a distance. Confirm the item name before mining if you’re unsure.
Creature Enamel Farming Priority Order
- Complete the Tadpole Pens and unlock the Alien Ruins waypoint. If you haven’t done this, our guide on the Tadpole Pens keycode and locked door covers the full walkthrough.
- Build the Tadpole, equip the Rebreather and Heat Tolerance adaptation, and head east toward the Alien Ruins.
- Reach the Alien Ruins, activate the Biobed for a nearby respawn point, and check the Fabricator to confirm the Enameled Glass recipe is available.
- Head 200 to 300 meters southeast of the Alien Ruins, park the Tadpole above 200 meters, and mine Enamel Husks on the cliff walls and rock pillars.
- Collect at least 5 to 6 Creature Enamel for headroom on future recipes.
- Return to the Fabricator and craft Enameled Glass: 1x Creature Enamel + 1x Glass per unit.
- Build the Modification Station using 2x Titanium, 2x Celestine, and 2x Copper.
- Craft the Tadpole Depth Module Mk. I using 3x Celestine, 2x Enameled Glass, and 1x System Chip.
- Equip the module and return to the alien biome — the deeper zones are now fully accessible.
