TL;DR
- Pets in AION 2 give passive stat bonuses called Owned Effects — these stack for every pet you unlock.
- There are five pet genera: Cogni, Fera, Natura, Varian, and Special.
- All pets in the same genus give the same stats at each level — pick whichever is easiest to farm.
- You need 5 souls to unlock a pet, 25 more to reach Level 2, and 75 more to max it at Level 3.
- Cogni pets give Might and Crit (offensive). Fera pets give Dexterity and Move Speed. Natura pets give Stamina and Precision. Varian pets give Constitution and Evasion.
- Do not ignore the Genus Insight system — it adds permanent stats and is one of AION 2’s strongest long-term gains.
- Collect wide first. Unlocking many pets gives more Owned Effects than maxing one pet.
How the Pet System Works in AION 2
Pets in AION 2 are not just cosmetic companions. They work as mounts, auto-loot collectors, and permanent stat sources for your character. Every pet you unlock contributes Owned Effects — passive bonuses that remain active even when you are riding a different pet.
The more pets you own, the stronger these bonuses become. This is why collecting broadly matters just as much as leveling individual pets.
There are 207 total pets in the global version of AION 2, divided across five genus groups: Cogni (41 pets), Fera (65 pets), Natura (48 pets), Varian (46 pets), and Special (7 pets). Each genus has its own stat theme and progression board called Genus Insight.
How to Unlock and Level Pets
Most pets are unlocked by farming Pet Souls from their corresponding monsters in the open world. Kill the right monster enough times and you will eventually collect the souls needed to unlock and level the pet. You can check exactly where each pet’s souls drop by opening the Pets menu, selecting a pet, and clicking the Source tab.
Here is how many souls each level requires:
- Unlock (Level 1) — 5 souls
- Level 2 — 25 additional souls
- Level 3 (Max) — 75 additional souls (105 souls total)
Each level you gain unlocks a new Owned Effect for that pet’s genus and awards Genus Insight EXP, which feeds into the deeper progression board system.
Pet ownership and Genus Insight are shared across all characters on your server. Work done on your main benefits your alts automatically.

Owned Effects: What Stats Do Pets Give?
Every pet gives Owned Effects at each insight level. These are passive bonuses that stack from all pets you own. They are permanent and account-wide. Here is what each genus provides at max level (Level 3):
| Genus | Level 1 | Level 2 | Level 3 (Max) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cogni | HP +10 | HP +20, Critical Hit +1 | HP +30, Critical Hit +2, Might +1 |
| Fera | Mount Ground Speed +1 | Mount Ground Speed +2, Accuracy Bonus +1 | Mount Ground Speed +3, Accuracy Bonus +2, Dexterity +1 |
| Natura | Stamina +3 | Stamina +6, Critical Hit Resist +1 | Stamina +9, Critical Hit Resist +2, Precision +1 |
| Varian | Sprint Cost Reduction +10 | Sprint Cost Reduction +20, Evasion Bonus +1 | Sprint Cost Reduction +30, Evasion Bonus +2, Constitution +1 |
| Special | No standard Owned Effects — value comes from Genus Insight board only | ||
These numbers apply per pet. Every maxed Cogni pet you own gives HP 30, Critical Hit 2, and Might 1. Stack that across dozens of pets and the total becomes significant.
Best Pets to Farm by Genus
Within each genus, every pet gives the same stats at the same insight level. You do not need to chase rare or hard-to-find pets for better numbers. The smart move is to farm whatever is easiest to kill in the zones you are already running.
Best Cogni Pets to Farm (Offensive: Might + Critical Hit)
Cogni pets are the top pick for damage-focused builds. At max level, each one gives Might (which increases Attack), Critical Hit, and HP. If you want stronger offensive output, Cogni should be your first farming focus.

Recommended Cogni pets to farm:
- Klaw / Klaw Scout / Elite Klaw — Soul drops confirmed by defeating them in the open world. Found in Verteron and Eltnen zones near the Destroyed Abyss Gate area.
- Modified Lupyllini / Decomposed Lupyllini — Farmable from monsters. Decomposed Claw Lupyllini spawns in Eltnen Barrier Tower Ruins (13 spawn points). Level 47 monster and easy to clear in groups or solo.
Both of these are widely available and drop alongside useful loot, so farming them fits naturally into your daily route.
Best Fera Pets to Farm (Speed + Accuracy + Dexterity)
Fera pets are the only genus that boosts Ground Mount Speed. If you want to move faster between objectives, collect more Fera pets. At max level they also add Accuracy Bonus and Dexterity, which helps with landing hits in PvP and endgame content.

Recommended Fera pets to farm:
- Papis — One of the most farmable pets in the game. Soul fragments appear in over a dozen zones including Silent Hill, Nameless Cemetery, Trainen Highland, and Mahindel River. Also available from the Black Cloud Merchant and chests. Papis is also one of the free starter pets.
- Skyray — 12 Skyray variants spread across levels 10 to 40. Found in Western Cantas Valley and other Verteron zones, as well as Altgard. Extremely spread out, which makes it easy to collect souls naturally during leveling.
Fera has 65 pets in total — the largest genus pool. Collecting broadly here pays off fast.
Best Natura Pets to Farm (Stamina + Precision + Crit Resist)
Natura pets give Stamina (used for sprinting and riding), Critical Hit Resist, and Precision. This genus is a good secondary focus for survivability and sustained performance during long dungeon runs.

Recommended Natura pets to farm:
- Fungie / Fungen — Soul drops confirmed from open-world monsters. Found in early and mid-game zones. Easy to pull into a farming loop alongside other activities.
- Rafflesia — Another straightforward Natura pick available from monster souls and chest sources. Check the in-game Source tab for spawn locations.
Best Varian Pets to Farm (Constitution + Evasion)
Varian pets give Constitution (which increases HP), Evasion Bonus, and Sprint Stamina Cost Reduction. This genus is the best choice for tank builds or players who die too often in content and want more survivability.

Recommended Varian pets to farm:
- Kalgolem / Blue Kalgolem — Both confirm soul drops from defeating them in the open world. Drakana Kalgolem does not drop souls directly but is available via chests.
- Swarm / Drana Swarm — Soul drops confirmed. Both are widely available monsters that appear throughout the game’s regular zones.
Special Pets — Do Not Farm Souls Here
Special pets do not come from open-world monsters. They are obtained through specific sources — the Founder’s Pack, Shugo Festival shop, Atelier shop, or the battle pass. Special pets provide no Owned Effects of their own, but they contribute to the Special Genus Insight board, which has its own stat rolls.
Do not invest your farmable crystals into the Special board. The crystals for Cogni, Fera, Natura, and Varian are all farmable in the open world. Save those for the Special board — its crystals are harder to come by.

How Many Pets Do You Need?
The short answer: the more the better, but early on you want breadth over depth.
Unlocking several different pets across all genera gives you more total Owned Effects stacking at once. Maxing one single pet to Level 3 gives you its stats from that one creature. Unlocking 10 pets — even at Level 1 — gives you 10 times the Owned Effect at that tier, plus collection milestone bonuses.
Collection milestone rewards (Soul Crystals and other bonuses) trigger at 5, 10, 20, 30, 40 pets owned, and continue up through 200 pets. These milestones make broad collection efficient from the very start.
Once your collection is growing, then start pushing specific pets to Level 3 to unlock max Owned Effects and Genus Insight EXP.

What Is Genus Insight and Why Does It Matter?
Genus Insight is the second layer of the pet progression system. It is a separate board for each genus with 9 analysis slots, each unlocked by leveling up your Genus Insight level for that genus. Each slot holds a rolled stat that can be rerolled using Soul Crystals and Kina.
You gain Genus Insight EXP by:
- Unlocking a new pet (+500 EXP)
- Reaching Pet Insight Level 2 (+250 EXP)
- Reaching Pet Insight Level 3 (+250 EXP)
- Running Genus Insight Analysis (+100 EXP per slot)
Each analysis costs 4 Soul Crystals and 1,000 Kina at base. The cost goes up significantly once you start locking slots — so do not lock anything until you have reached Genus Insight Level 10 on the board you are working on. Rolling stats before Level 10 means you are locking lower-grade results that you will want to reroll later at higher cost.
Best Genus Insight Stats to Target
Every board has 9 slots with different possible stat rolls depending on the slot position and the genus. The most important stat to target per genus at Slot 4 (the first slot with Epic grade potential) is:
- Cogni — Critical Damage Boost
- Fera — Weapon Damage Boost
- Natura — PvE Damage Boost
- Varian — Front or Back Attack Damage Boost (match to your playstyle)
- Special — Double Chance
These are endgame-level optimizations. Early on, just level each board to 10 and do not lock anything. At Level 10, the stat grade pool improves significantly — Slot 9 can roll Heroic grade with a 1% chance. Locking stats too early is one of the most common mistakes players make with this system.
Fully mastering the Genus Insight system rewards you with the Unbound by Genus title, which gives PvE Damage Boost +4.5% when equipped. That alone makes the long-term investment worth it.
Practical Farming Tips
- Use the Source tab. Open the Pets menu, click any pet, and go to the Source tab to see exactly where its soul-dropping monsters spawn. No guessing needed.
- Integrate farming into your daily route. Do not farm pets in a separate session. Pick pets whose monsters are in zones you already run for quests, Sealed Dungeons, or daily missions.
- Keep every soul fragment. Even for pets you already own at max level, extra souls feed Genus Insight EXP.
- Do not ignore free pets. Starter pets like Papis, Fossa, and Black Smoke Murute are free and contribute to your collection count immediately.
- Check the Black Cloud Merchant. This rotating shop occasionally sells pets not easily found through open-world farming. Check it regularly.
- Collect from chests and events. The Season 1 battle pass free track pays Pet Soul Chests. Shugo Festival rewards include pets. These are passive collection gains that happen whether you focus on pets or not.

Pet Farming and Gear Progression
Pet stats are small individually but cumulative and permanent. Players sometimes dismiss them early because no single pet changes how the game feels. That is the wrong way to look at it. A character with 50 maxed pets across all genera has meaningfully more Attack, HP, Accuracy, Evasion, and Movement Speed than one with 5 pets — all without spending a single Kina on gear.
This makes pet farming one of the best free and passive forms of progression in AION 2. It costs no enhancement stones, no enhancement rolls, and no Kina to maintain. You just need to kill the right monsters on your way through the world.
