TL;DR
- Ancient Barrier is a Stjar Clan Faction Quest — start it in Skallcove after completing enough Pailune side quests and unlocking “The Jackal’s Scheme”
- The puzzle involves activating and rotating four Coil Pillars to chain lightning across Windsong Peaks
- A correctly aligned pillar emits a visible beam to the next one — if no beam appears, keep rotating
- The storm and low visibility are the real difficulty here — use the beams to navigate
- After completing the puzzle, the path to Titan, God of Thunder opens immediately — restock before going up
- Titan is a multi-phase boss that also has a Gigantified form
The Ancient Barrier quest is one of the most disorienting puzzles in Crimson Desert. It takes you up to the storm-lashed heights of Windsong Peaks, deep in the Scorched Mountain region of Pailune — and between the constant lightning strikes and near-zero visibility rain, it’s very easy to get turned around.
The mechanics themselves are straightforward once you understand them. The real challenge is the environment. This guide walks you through every step.
How to Unlock Ancient Barrier in Crimson Desert
This quest is tied to the Stjar Clan, which is based in Skallcove in Pailune. It won’t appear on your quest list until two conditions are met:
- You have completed enough Pailune Faction Quests to unlock “The Jackal’s Scheme” from the Stjar Clan
- You have completed “The Jackal’s Scheme” itself
Once both conditions are met, the Ancient Barrier quest will become available from the Stjar Clan. Accept it and head to Windsong Peaks to begin.
What You Need Before Starting
You need two abilities active before attempting the puzzle:
Nature’s Grasp — This lets you lift and move the Coil Pillars onto their pedestals. Without it, the puzzle is impossible. The exact input is Triangle + Square > X on PS5 and Y + X > A on Xbox. If you unlocked this back in Chapter 2 during the Reunion quest, you’re already set.
Turning Slash — You’ll need this to break the ice trapping the northern Coil Pillar. Make sure it’s equipped before heading up.
How to Activate the Broken Ancient Lightning Device
The goal is to chain lightning across four Coil Pillars so that electricity flows into the central Coil Status Panel. Each pillar needs to be placed on its pedestal and rotated to face the correct direction.
Key tip: A correctly aligned Coil Pillar emits a visible beam of electricity toward the next one in the chain. If you rotate a lever and no beam appears pointing at another pillar, keep rotating. When you see the beam connecting, that position is correct.
The storm will make navigation difficult. Use the beams of light as your compass — they’re the clearest visual reference you have up there.
Step 1 — Activate the North Coil Pillar

Head to the far northern section of the marked area on your map.

- You’ll find a Coil Pillar frozen in ice next to a Coil Pedestal
- Use Turning Slash (R1+R2) to shatter the ice and free the pillar
- Use Nature’s Grasp to lift the pillar and place it onto the Coil Pedestal
- Push the lever until the pillar is facing south
- You should see a beam of electricity shoot south toward the next Coil Pillar
Step 2 — Check the First South Coil Pillar

Fly south from the North Coil Pillar.
This pillar is already activated and in place — you don’t need to move it. Just confirm that its lever is facing south, directing the beam further south toward the next pillar in the chain. If it’s already correct, move on.
Step 3 — Activate the Second South Coil Pillar

Continue south to find another Coil Pillar on the ground near its pedestal.
- Use Nature’s Grasp to lift the pillar and place it on the Coil Pedestal
- Once activated, push the lever until it’s facing west
- A beam should shoot westward into the distance toward the western pillar
Step 4 — Activate the West Coil Pillar

Head west to find the final main Coil Pillar.
- Rotate the lever until it’s facing northeast
- The beam should connect with a pillar directly below it
There’s also a pillar just north of this one. It should already be active and correctly positioned. If for any reason it’s not, head north, press the activation button, and rotate the handle until the beam connects properly.
Step 5 — Activate the Coil Status Panel

With all four Coil Pillars active and aligned, head back to the center of the area.
- Find the Coil Status Panel in the middle
- Check that all coils are showing lightning surging through them
- Stand in the middle of the platform
- The platform will light up and trigger a cutscene — this reveals the path to the mountain’s peak
If the panel doesn’t respond, one of your pillars is still misaligned. Look for any beam that’s shooting into empty space rather than connecting to another pillar and rotate that lever until it connects.
After the Puzzle — Before You Head Up
The path to Titan, God of Thunder opens immediately after the cutscene. Do not head up unprepared.
Titan is one of the hardest boss fights in the game. He has multiple phases including a Gigantified form that is more mechanically demanding than his standard form. Before climbing to the peak:
- Restock all food and recovery items — Braised Meat, Meat Skewers, and Palmar Pills
- Check your skills — make sure Flame Strike, Turning Slash, and any other combat skills you rely on are equipped and upgraded
- Save manually — see our guide on how to save in Crimson Desert if you’re unsure

Troubleshooting Common Issues
The quest isn’t appearing: You haven’t completed enough Pailune Faction Quests yet. Work through more Stjar Clan quests in Skallcove, specifically until “The Jackal’s Scheme” becomes available and you complete it.
Can’t move the Coil Pillar: Make sure you’re using Nature’s Grasp. For the northern pillar specifically, you must break the ice with Turning Slash before Nature’s Grasp will work on it.
The Coil Status Panel isn’t activating: At least one pillar is still misaligned. Look for a beam that shoots into empty space — that’s your problem pillar. Rotate its lever until the beam points at another pillar.
