TL;DR

  • The Vow of the Dead King is a unique two-handed halberd found inside Frostveiled Castle Ruins in northern Pailune.
  • It comes pre-rolled with Abyss Gear that gives +4% damage against Humanoids, Walkers, and Mighty Foes.
  • You don’t need to fight a boss. Navigate traps, clear bandits, light a lantern, and the weapon is yours.
  • It shares the spear moveset and is one of the best crowd-control weapons you can grab early.
  • Takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes once you know the route.

The Vow of the Dead King is one of those weapons that Crimson Desert never tells you about. No quest marker. No cutscene. It just sits at the bottom of a cold, trap-filled dungeon waiting for someone bold enough to find it.

This halberd is worth the trip. It comes pre-rolled with triple Abyss Gear bonuses and a high Critical Rate, making it one of the strongest two-handed options you can grab before the mid-game. If you love wide sweeping attacks that hit groups of enemies, this weapon was made for your playstyle.

Here is how to get it, step by step.

What Is the Vow of the Dead King?

The Vow of the Dead King is a unique two-handed halberd. Lore-wise, it was once wielded by Beloth, the Darksworn. He carried it even as he lost his throne in the south and eventually froze to death in the northern snowfields. The bloodstains from that dark chapter still mark the blade.

In terms of gameplay, the weapon uses the spear moveset. That means wide horizontal swings, strong crowd control, and a good reach advantage against groups of enemies. It comes pre-refined to Tier 2 with:

  • Base Attack: 14 (scales up to 35 with refinement)
  • Critical Rate: 3 to 4 (one of the highest in the game early on)
  • Abyss Gear: +4% damage against Humanoids, Walkers, and Mighty Foes

That triple coverage is the real selling point. Humanoids are the most common enemy type in the entire game. Having a built-in damage bonus against them, plus walkers and mighty foes, keeps the weapon useful for a long stretch of the story.

The main trade-off is attack speed. Two-handed halberds swing slower than one-handed weapons. If you prefer fast, aggressive combat, you will feel the difference. Pair it with heavier armor and stamina-focused builds to get the best results.

Where to Find the Vow of the Dead King

The weapon is located inside the Citadel of the Forgotten King, a dungeon beneath the Frostveiled Castle Ruins. This area is in the northern part of the Tribal State of Pailune, near Silverwolf Mountain, just east of the Wayward Woods.

You will not be directed here by any quest. You have to go out of your way to find it.

How to Get There

Starting point: Pailune City.

From Pailune City, take the mountain road heading southwest. Follow it upward past the Sanctum of Solace. This is a good checkpoint to stop at. Save your progress there and make sure you have cold-resistance gear equipped, because the temperature in this zone drains your stamina faster than normal. Check out our ice resistance and frost protection guide if you need help with that.

Keep climbing the road. The Frostveiled Castle Ruins will come into view as a large, crumbling stone fortress surrounded by mountains. You cannot miss it.

Watch out on the way there. Wolf packs and ambush enemies patrol the Wayward Woods and the mountain paths leading up to the ruins. If you are still early in the game, ride past them. You do not need to fight anything on the road to get to the castle.

Clearing the Castle Grounds

When you arrive at the Frostveiled Castle Ruins, you will find it occupied by a large group of bandits. The good news is that individually, these enemies are not very strong. The bad news is there are a lot of them.

You can choose to clear them all out for extra experience and loot, but it is not strictly required to get the weapon. What you do need to do is fight through enough of them to reach the staircase at the north-center of the castle.

If you are clearing the full area, use Force Palm and Focused Repulsion to deal with large groups at once. The Focused Repulsion ability hits everything around you in a full 360-degree radius and is very effective in tight spaces with many enemies.

Once the path is clear, find the staircase that leads down into the underground section of the castle. This leads to the Citadel of the Forgotten King.

Navigating the Dungeon

The underground section is where things get interesting. This dungeon is a traversal challenge more than a combat one. There are three hazard sections to get through.

Section 1 – Spike Traps The first corridor has spike traps on the floor. Do not try to jump through them. Instead, use a double jump and glide to float across the entire section. If your health is reasonably high, you can also just tank a hit or two from the spikes and push through. Check our guide on how to unlock double jump if you have not done that yet.

Section 2 – The Gap After the spike traps, there is a gap in the floor that you need to jump across. It is a simple jump. Time it right and keep moving.

Section 3 – Fire Traps Further in, you will encounter fire traps. Observe the timing and move through when the flames die down. Do not rush this section.

The Final Room

At the end of the corridor, you will reach a large chamber. Two Stone Worms spawn in this room. You do not have to fight them. However, if you do kill them, each one drops a Power Core, which you need if you plan to craft Kuku weapons. See our guide on how to craft Kuku Lightning Spear for more on that.

Look to the right side of the room. You will see a barred cell door with the halberd visible inside. To open it, find the stone lantern on the left side of the room. Walk up to it and hold the interact button to light it. The metal bars will drop immediately.

Walk inside the cell and interact with the stone coffin or the weapon on the ground to pick up the Vow of the Dead King. It goes straight into your inventory.

Is It Worth Getting?

Yes, without much debate. For a weapon you can grab without completing any specific quest, the Vow of the Dead King is excellent value.

The triple Abyss Gear bonuses mean it pulls its weight across a huge variety of enemy encounters. The high Critical Rate pairs extremely well with critical-rate builds. And because the dungeon tests platforming skill rather than raw combat power, even a player at an early stage of the game can complete this run.

The one legitimate downside is the slower swing speed. If you find it too sluggish, consider pairing it with stamina management skills and heavier armor to let you take hits between swings and commit to harder, fewer attacks.

Refine the weapon as soon as you can to push its damage up and keep it competitive as you move through the mid-game. Check our guide on how to upgrade weapons and armor for the full breakdown on refinement.
