One-handed swords are one of the most flexible weapon types in Crimson Desert. You can use them with a shield for a defensive, reliable setup or dual wield two swords to push damage output higher. Either way works well through most of the game.
Before we get into specific picks, there’s something important to understand: weapons in Crimson Desert are largely cosmetic at the same tier level. A sword with Critical Rate 2 will deal the same damage as any other sword with Critical Rate 2, regardless of name or looks. The real difference comes from Abyss Gears — special modifiers that change how your weapon performs in combat. Unique swords found through exploration tend to come with Abyss Gears already slotted, which is what gives them an edge over basic shop weapons, especially early on.
That said, certain swords stand out — for their Abyss Gear combinations, their passive bonuses, their stats at pickup, or simply because they’re available before others. These are the ones worth hunting.

How One-Handed Swords Work in Crimson Desert
Every one-handed sword fits one of three archetypes:
Raw Attack — High base damage, no extra modifiers. Best for straightforward builds. Your starting sword, the Sword of the Wolf, is actually this type.
Critical Rate — Slightly lower raw attack but adds critical hit chance. Widely considered the best archetype for dealing consistent damage. Crit builds scale well into the late game.
Attack Speed — Trades a little attack for faster swing speed. Great for dual wield setups where keeping up a rapid combo matters.
At Refinement 10, all swords of the same archetype hit identical numbers. So picking the “best” sword mostly comes down to which Abyss Gears are attached, how far it is into the refinement process when you find it, and how it looks — because fashion is the real endgame.
To learn how to increase your attack level and make the most out of any weapon you choose, that guide covers exactly what to prioritize. You can also reinforce equipment and upgrade weapons and armor to push your damage even further.

Best One-Handed Swords — Early to Late Game
Sword of the Lord (Early Game)
How to get it: Defeat Kailok the Hornsplitter in Chapter 2.
The Sword of the Lord is the first real upgrade most players pick up. It’s a reward for beating the Kailok the Hornsplitter boss, which you’ll face naturally in Chapter 2. It comes with Level 2 attack speed and has Abyss Gear slots, which makes it a strong platform for building your early setup. The attack speed boost is immediately noticeable and makes fights feel snappier. Most players use this until they get into Hernand and start finding or exploring for better options.
Chillfallen Sword (Early Game)
How to get it: Found at The Argent Peaks in West Pailune, leaning against a wall near two skeletons inside Snowhaven Hearth.
The Chillfallen Sword is easy to miss but very easy to get once you know where it is. Head to The Argent Peaks in West Pailune, find the Abyss Nexus there, and ride toward the large open area called Snowhaven Hearth. Look for two skeletons along the far wall — the sword is propped up against the wall beside them. No boss fight, no puzzle, no key required. It has three Abyss Craft slots and Level 2 attack speed, making it one of the best-value early finds in the game. Our Chillfallen Sword guide covers the exact path to get there.
Hollow Visage (Early to Mid Game)
How to get it: Dawn Cave, north of Mountain of Frozen Souls in southern Hernand — enter using Stab to open the cave behind a waterfall.
The Hollow Visage has 17 ATK and comes with three Abyss Gear slots pre-filled: Insight I, Gale I, and Destruction I. That combination boosts critical hits and attack speed right away. It’s also at Refinement Level 3 when you find it, which is a head start over most swords at that point in the game. The cave entrance is hidden behind a waterfall, so you need to use the Stab skill to get inside. Once you’re in, the chest is at the bottom. Straightforward if you know the technique.
Survivor’s Solitude (Early to Mid Game)
How to get it: Death’s Grip Cavern, northwest of Lake Kharonso — behind a waterfall, enter using Stab.
Survivor’s Solitude is one of the most talked-about swords in the early to mid-game. It has 21 ATK and carries an early Critical Rate bonus, which most swords at this stage of the game simply don’t offer. It comes with three Abyss Gear slots. While it’s a bit out of the way, you can grab it well before the story brings you to that area naturally. Most players encounter it during Chapter 4 around the “Head to Scholastone” quest, but you can get it earlier with a quick detour. This is the go-to recommendation if you’re optimizing for a crit build from the start. Full details are in our Survivor’s Solitude guide.
Righteous Verdict (Mid Game)
How to get it: Demeniss Ancestors’ Ruins — hidden inside a chest requiring some exploration.
The Righteous Verdict sits at 23 ATK with Level 2 Speed and Level 3 Critical Rate. What makes it especially notable is its Abyss Gear loadout: Gale II, Destruction I, and Insight I. Gale II is the only Level 2 Gale modifier in the entire game — no other weapon has it. That makes the Righteous Verdict one of the most balanced mid-game options if you want attack speed, crit, and damage covered in a single sword. It takes a little exploration to reach, but it’s worth the trip. Our Righteous Verdict guide walks you through the exact location.
Tauria Curved Sword (Mid Game)
How to get it: Reward for completing Chapter 5 and defeating the Crowcaller boss.
The Tauria Curved Sword is one of the most widely used mid-game swords in Crimson Desert, and the reason is its Abyss Gear: Crow’s Pursuit. This ability summons a spectral crow that chases down your target when you use a heavy attack, giving you a ranged component to what is otherwise a melee weapon. It’s particularly useful against flying enemies and fleeing targets. The sword itself has a Level 1 base attack speed, which is on the slower side, so the most popular use is to pair it in your off-hand with a faster sword. The crow attack compensates for the slower swings and the combo feels natural once you get used to it.
Check our Crowcaller boss guide if you need help getting past Chapter 5.
Melted Ambition (Mid Game)
How to get it: Defeat Myurdin during the Decisive Battle in Chapter 7.
Melted Ambition drops from beating Myurdin in Chapter 7, and it comes with the Groundsurge Abyss Gear. Groundsurge creates a shockwave along the ground when you use certain attacks, which staggers nearby enemies and deals area damage. At 17 ATK it’s not the highest raw damage sword at this stage, but Groundsurge makes it a strong crowd control tool in mid-game encounters with groups. If you’re struggling with mob density in mid-game areas, this sword changes how those fights feel.
Fated Shadow (Late Game)
How to get it: Nest of Valor Abyss area, near Dry Valley — available after defeating Goyen in Chapter 9’s “Unwavering Steps” main quest.
The Fated Shadow is the best-kept secret among one-handed swords in Crimson Desert. The game gives no hint it exists — no quest marker, no NPC dialogue, no reward screen. After you defeat Goyen in Chapter 9, head to the Nest of Valor in the Abyss near Dry Valley. At the central podium, take a right. Find the small shack or cave with a staircase and go deeper in. The sword is on the ground among some objects, easy to overlook.
What you get is a one-handed sword at Refinement Level 6 with 25 base ATK — the highest starting attack of any one-handed sword in the game at the point you can access it. It also comes pre-slotted with Greysoul Howling, a unique Abyss Gear ability that summons the phantom of Goyen to unleash a sweeping shadow strike. You activate it with R1 + R2 (RB + RT on Xbox). The phantom registers its own hit separately from your main swing, adds extra stagger, and works beautifully in both mob situations and boss fights. Zero farming, zero upgrading required. You pick it up and it’s ready.
Don’t sell it. The sword and the ability together are far more valuable than the few silver coins you’d get for it. For more on how to get there, our full Fated Shadow and Greysoul Howling guide covers the exact steps.
What to Pair With Your One-Handed Sword
If you’re running sword and shield, focus on finding a strong shield early. The Shield of Conviction is widely considered the best shield in the game. You can also learn how to flip enemies with your shield and parry, counter, and dodge for maximum value from the sword-and-board setup.
If you’re dual wielding, check out the dual wield guide for the basics, and consider running a faster sword in your off-hand to balance the Tauria Curved Sword’s slower swings.
For Damiane players specifically, she uses different weapon types — if you’re building her out, our Damiane Executioner of Darkness armor guide and best unique weapons and armor guide will help you round out her kit.
