The Hyper Punishment Gun in Deltarune Chapter 5 is one of the most memorable moments in the chapter. Yellow — convinced through a series of events that he is the criminal responsible for everything — decides the ultimate punishment is to tie himself to a springy flower and get blasted by a ceiling-mounted laser. You are given two minutes to destroy it before it fires. The obvious move is to attack the gun and save him. But what happens if you just stand there and do nothing? The answer is one of the best Non-Standard Game Overs Toby Fox has ever put into a game.
- Yellow activates the Hyper Punishment Gun himself, giving you 120 seconds to destroy it.
- If you let the timer run out, the gun fires a blinding shot.
- The blast completely misses Yellow. He is totally fine.
- Kris, Susie, and Ralsei all drop to zero HP instead.
- Yellow reappears and says “Dang, it missed me!” before the screen cuts to black.
- You get an instant Game Over and reload from your last save.
- There is no secret reward, achievement, or alternate story path for this outcome.
Who Is Yellow and Why Is He Trying to Punish Himself?
Yellow is one of Asgore’s seven flowers in the Flower Kingdom Dark World. He is a tall, gangly, fully yellow Darkner in a cowboy hat and spurs, built around the concept of justice. His entire personality is structured around law, order, and doing what is right. He is also, when pushed, spectacularly gullible.
By the time the Hyper Punishment Gun scene arrives, Yellow has convinced himself — largely thanks to Susie’s masterful gaslighting — that he himself is the criminal responsible for some kind of offense. The party uses this against him earlier in the chapter to obtain the Yellow Key. But Yellow does not simply accept defeat and move on. His devotion to justice turns inward. If he is the criminal, he is also the one who must be punished.
He runs through an escalating series of self-punishment attempts. He tries to bury himself alive. He tries other increasingly ridiculous methods. Nothing works out. He eventually settles on what he considers the ultimate sentence: being tied to a springy flower he calls a “trambampoline” and getting shot by the Hyper Punishment Gun, a massive weapon mounted to the ceiling. Aqua enthusiastically helps him set this up.
What Is the Hyper Punishment Gun?
The Hyper Punishment Gun is a large ceiling-mounted laser weapon inside the Flower Castle. Yellow triggers its charge sequence himself. Before it begins charging, he explains that it takes a full 120 seconds to charge completely and fire. That gives the party two minutes to do something about it.
The intended approach is to attack the gun, pull it down to ground level, and destroy it before the timer expires. You use Yellow’s flower to jump and reach the gun, then command Susie to use Rude Buster to knock it lower. From there, you hit it repeatedly while dodging Aqua’s knives flying around the arena. The gun retreats and then has to be knocked down a second time before it finally breaks. When it does, Yellow stops himself and — still determined to be punished — slides himself down the jail slide to lock himself up voluntarily.
What Happens If You Let the Gun Fire?
If you stand completely still and let the 120-second timer count all the way down, the Hyper Punishment Gun fires. This is what it looks like.
The barrel of the weapon begins to glow red. A dark shadow spreads across the center of the screen while a blinding white light covers the rest of the area. The screen fills entirely. When the light finally fades and the effect clears, you check your party status and find that Kris, Susie, and Ralsei have all dropped to zero HP.
Then Yellow reappears from offscreen, completely unharmed. He looks around for a moment. He says: “Dang, it missed me!”
The screen fades to black. Your heart breaks. The Game Over screen appears. You reload from your most recent save.
That is the entire outcome. The gun, aimed directly at Yellow, fired with full charge, missed him entirely and obliterated the party instead. Yellow is alive. The party is not. Justice was not served. The gun just sort of had bad aim.
Why This Game Over Is So Good
The Hyper Punishment Gun Game Over works because of how perfectly it fits Yellow as a character. Yellow is obsessed with justice but constantly fails to actually achieve it. He gaslights himself into believing he is a criminal. He tries to punish himself and cannot manage that either. The gun he built specifically to punish himself misses him on its one attempt. There is something deeply consistent about Yellow spending an entire sequence trying to face consequences and walking away without a scratch, while the people trying to help him take the full hit instead.
It is also a classic Toby Fox move — rewarding curious players who push against the obvious intended action with a fully scripted, committed joke outcome. The game did not just quietly kill the party and roll credits. It gave Yellow a line. It thought about what Yellow would say in this moment and put it in. “Dang, it missed me!” is exactly what Yellow would say. That specificity is what makes it land.
This kind of Non-Standard Game Over sits in a long Deltarune tradition. The games consistently reward players who wonder “what if I just do the wrong thing” with something worth seeing — not a bonus ending, but a genuine creative response to the choice.
Is There Any Reward for Letting the Gun Fire?
No. There is no achievement, no secret dialogue, no alternate path, and no bonus content tied to letting the Hyper Punishment Gun fire. The outcome is a Game Over and a reload. The only reward is the scene itself — which is admittedly very funny — and the satisfaction of having tested the boundary.
If you are on a clean playthrough, going for full completion, or playing for the first time, there is no reason to let the timer run out on purpose. You will just lose your progress from the save point and have to redo the approach to the gun. Save before the encounter if you want to see the Game Over without any risk, then reload and destroy it properly.
How to Actually Destroy the Hyper Punishment Gun
If you want to save Yellow and continue the story, here is what to do once the 120-second timer starts.
- Use Yellow’s flower in the area to jump up and reach the gun at ceiling height.
- Command Susie to use Rude Buster to knock the gun down to a lower position where you can hit it directly.
- Attack the gun repeatedly while dodging Aqua’s knives flying around the arena at the same time.
- The gun will retreat after taking enough damage. It pulls back up and you need to knock it down a second time.
- Use the same method — jump with Yellow’s flower, Rude Buster to drop it, then attack — and keep going until the gun breaks entirely.
Once the gun is destroyed, the scene shifts. Yellow accepts that the punishment is not happening, and still committed to facing justice, voluntarily slides himself down the jail slide to lock himself up. The story then continues with Blue arriving to find Yellow and the events leading into the Blue and Yellow boss fight.

What Happens to Yellow After This Scene
Whether you destroy the gun or reload after the Game Over, the story continues the same way. Yellow locks himself in the jail slide. Blue arrives, is confused about Yellow’s location, and leaves to find him. The party follows Blue back through the Yellow Door route and eventually into the jail cell where Yellow has imprisoned himself.
This sets up the Blue and Yellow boss fight — the courtroom trial encounter where you solve four cases by naming the right culprit and presenting the correct evidence. Blue ultimately reveals he stole Yellow’s special petals to make a bouquet. Yellow tries to punish himself with his own revolver, but the bullets come out as blue flowers. Yellow is overwhelmed with joy. They leave the fight together happy, and later in the chapter’s final stretch the two can be seen floating in the background with Yellow blushing before Blue takes his hand.
Yellow goes from trying to destroy himself with a ceiling laser to floating off happily with Blue. The character arc is complete. The gun missed him for a reason.
