How to Get the Praxic Blade in Destiny 2 — TL;DR
- The Praxic Blade is unlocked by completing the Fire and Ice Exotic mission, which is part of the Renegades campaign. You cannot miss it.
- Fire and Ice is the fourth major story mission in Renegades. You reach it at Quest Step 33 after speaking to Aunor at the Tharsis Cantina.
- The mission takes place on Europa inside the Praxic Vault. There are no waypoint markers — you navigate on your own.
- Two main mechanics: the Balance the Scales encounter (feeding energy into Blights) and the Disciple of Harrow boss fight.
- The Praxic Blade sits in the Kinetic slot, uses Special Ammo, and is intrinsically Anti-Barrier.
- After the campaign, you receive the Praxic’s Path quest, which unlocks additional upgrades including the Defensive Form and early color crystals.
- You need the Renegades expansion to access this mission and weapon.
How to get the Praxic Blade in Destiny 2 is one of the most searched questions from the Renegades expansion — and for good reason. This is Destiny 2’s lightsaber, the standout weapon of the Renegades campaign, and it is tied to a tricky Exotic mission with unexplained mechanics. This guide walks you through every step of the Fire and Ice mission, the boss fight, and what to do with the blade once you have it in 2026.

What Is the Praxic Blade?
The Praxic Blade is an Exotic Kinetic Sword introduced in Destiny 2: Renegades. It is the game’s take on a lightsaber, directly inspired by the Star Wars franchise. It sits in the Kinetic slot and uses Special Ammo — making it one of only a handful of Special Ammo swords in Destiny 2.
Praxic Blade Base Perks
- Ranged Weapon (Intrinsic): Press Heavy Attack to throw the Praxic Blade, which seeks out multiple targets automatically. Pressing attack recalls it mid-flight. Hold Heavy Attack for a charged throw that sends the blade in a straight line toward your aim. Releasing recalls it.
- Cormorant Reversal: While guarding, incoming projectiles are converted into bolts that reflect back toward wherever you are aiming. This lets you redirect enemy fire at enemies — including dangerous ranged attacks that would otherwise kill you.
- Cormorant Combo: After three rapid light melee attacks, quickly press Heavy Attack to execute a heavy melee combo. This is a damage burst option most players discover by accident.
- Intrinsic Anti-Barrier: The Praxic Blade is intrinsically effective against Barrier Champions.
The Praxic Blade is also the most customisable Exotic in Destiny 2 history. Once you unlock it, you can pursue Catalysts, Forms, Focus Mods, Power Cores, and 15 Dark Matter Crystal color options. See the full Praxic Blade upgrades guide for every unlock.

How to Start the Fire and Ice Mission
You do not need to seek out the Fire and Ice mission separately. It is baked directly into the Renegades campaign.
Play through the main Renegades story quests until you reach Quest Step 33. At this point, Aunor at the Tharsis Cantina sends you to the Praxic Temple on Europa. The Fire and Ice mission begins automatically from there.
You cannot miss it. Every player who completes the Renegades campaign earns the Praxic Blade.
Legendary vs Normal Difficulty
On Normal difficulty, the mission gives you standard objective markers to follow.
On Legendary difficulty, all markers and hints are removed. You navigate entirely on your own. This is the main reason players get stuck — the vault entrance and mechanic triggers are not obvious without guidance. If you are running Legendary for the campaign Exotic armor reward, use this guide to navigate without markers.
Combat in Fire and Ice is not the hard part. Traversal and figuring out the mechanics is where most runs fall apart.
Fire and Ice Mission Walkthrough — Step by Step
Step 1 — Find the Praxic Vault Entrance
When you spawn in, there are no waypoints. Head forward and slightly right from spawn, pushing through Barant Imperium enemies as you go. You are looking for the large spherical cannon facing a frozen sea.
Go into the Imperium base nestled in the ice wall. It is the only entrance not blocked by an orange energy barrier. Clear all enemies inside to make a Colossus boss called Val Cal’Ric, Door Technician appear. Kill him and pick up the Imperium Door Codes he drops — these are a small pyramid item on the ground.

Take the Imperium Door Codes to the marked console in the middle of the room and insert them. The blast doors open. Head down through the newly opened path.

Step 2 — Enter the Taken Portal
Through the blast doors, you enter a room with Taken enemies and a Darkness totem in front of a door bound by Taken energy. Approach the totem and a horde of Taken spawn, including a yellow-bar Taken Ogre called the Portal Keeper. Kill the Portal Keeper to open a Taken portal. Jump in.

Step 3 — Ascendant Plane Traversal
The portal takes you into the Ascendant Plane — a dark, floating-platform area with Taken hazards.
Inside the portal room, there is a pillar in the centre. Climb it to around the halfway point. Find the hollow cavity in the pillar and jump inside it. Drop down through the chasm below.
From there, traverse the Ascendant Plane by jumping across platforms to reach an open area with a central jutting platform. Be careful of Taken geysers that knock you off platforms and invisible walls that push you back. You can use Grapple, Eager Edge, or simply ascending from the right side to reach the central platform.
On the right side of the central platform, find a hole in the wall. Enter through it, go up the stairs, and continue to the right. Navigate the room with gates and symbols on the floor. The floor breaks when you step on it — move quickly. Some gates block forward movement, others are open. Climb to the top beams and head back in the direction you came from to find the next area.
Step 4 — Balance the Scales (First Encounter)
This is the main mechanic of the mission. You enter an arena with four Taken Blights — two Light Blights and two Dark Blights.
Your job is to feed equal energy into both sides. Here is how it works:
- Kill Cabal (Imperium) enemies to generate one type of energy — Paired Energy (white).
- Kill Taken enemies to generate the other type — Opposite Energy (black).
- Pick up the energy that drops and throw it into the correct Blight. Opposite Energy goes into Dark Blights. Paired Energy goes into Light Blights.
- Keep both sides growing at the same rate. Do not overfeed one side.
- When both Blights are fully charged and balanced, the encounter completes.
Once the Scales are balanced, a portal appears on the edge of the arena. Go through it.

Step 5 — Grab the Imbalanced Octant and Flip the Plane
Through the portal, you reach a quieter chamber. Find and grab the Imbalanced Octant — a dark pyramid-shaped artefact. Move to the column in the centre of the room and climb it. Interact with the Pyramid structure at the top to flip the Ascendant Plane, inverting the world around you and taking you into a darker version of the vault.
After the flip, exit through the portal that appears and head back through the previously traversed areas. You will re-enter the vault from a new angle. Continue through to reach the boss arena.
Step 6 — Disciple of Harrow Boss Fight
The final boss is called the Disciple of Harrow. The fight has four health bar segments.
For the first three segments, deal damage normally. The boss teleports at each health breakpoint but remains damageable throughout. Focus on clearing Hobgoblin snipers during any lull — they deal heavy damage from range and will end your run quickly if ignored. Solar resistance mods are recommended for this fight.
When the boss reaches the final health bar, he becomes immune and shrouds himself in Darkness. This triggers the final Balance the Scales checkpoint.
Two Blights appear. The mechanic is the same as the first encounter, but with one key difference: enemy type alternation is now controlled by totem pillars on floating platforms, not fixed spawns. Jump to the upper floating platforms and activate the totem pillars to switch which enemy faction spawns. Kill Cleaved elites to generate energy. Throw it into the correct Blight. Keep both sides balanced.
Once both Blights are fully charged, the boss’s immunity breaks. Burst him down immediately to end the fight before another shield cycle begins.

Step 7 — Collect the Praxic Blade
Killing the Disciple of Harrow transports you into the Praxic Temple. The Praxic Blade Exotic Sword is waiting in the vault room alongside additional loot including armor and Blasters.
You also receive one of two initial Dark Matter Crystals at this point — either Green or Blue. Which one you get is determined randomly. You will get the other one later through the Praxic’s Path quest. Do not worry if you receive the one you did not want first.
Known Bug — Dying at the Same Time as the Boss
If you die at the exact same moment you kill the Disciple of Harrow, there is a chance you get locked inside the boss room and cannot pick up the Praxic Blade or finish the mission. If this happens, you need to restart the mission from the beginning. It is an edge case but worth knowing before your Legendary run.
Fire and Ice on Legendary — Tips
- No markers exist. Use this guide to navigate. The vault entrance is to the right of spawn in the ice wall base. The pillar hollow is at mid-height, not the top.
- Traversal deaths do not cost revive tokens and there are no Darkness zones during platforming. Only the boss area is punishing.
- Clear Hobgoblins before anything else during the boss fight. They are the most likely cause of death during damage phases.
- Solar resistance mods make the Disciple of Harrow’s attacks noticeably more survivable.
- Good add-clear matters more than peak boss DPS for most of this mission. Bring a reliable primary weapon alongside the Praxic Blade.
- The mission took most players over an hour on a first blind run. A second run with knowledge of the layout takes around 15 minutes.
What to Do After You Get the Praxic Blade
Unlocking the blade is only the beginning. After completing the campaign, Aunor gives you the Praxic’s Path quest. This quest unlocks the Defensive Form and your second initial crystal color, and sets you on the path to fully upgrading the weapon.
You will replay Fire and Ice multiple times on Legendary difficulty to collect the three hidden Catalysts — Echoing Blade, Upper Hand, and Hyperblade. The fourth Catalyst, Energy Conduit, comes from the Equilibrium dungeon quest.
For all the upgrade categories, sources, and priority order, the Praxic Blade upgrades guide covers everything. For Dark Matter Crystal colors including the Red crystal from Invasion, see the Dark Matter Crystals guide. You will need Deathmarks for the Invasion runs — the Deathmarks farming guide explains the fastest methods.
If you are also working toward the Offensive Form and Energy Conduit Catalyst, those require completing The Way Between quest in the Equilibrium dungeon. The Star Wars weapons guide covers how the Praxic Blade fits into the full Renegades weapon set if you are building out a complete loadout.
