Destiny 2: How to Open Ascendant Chests With Tincture of Queensfoil

Learn how to get the Tincture of Queensfoil in Destiny 2, use it to unlock the Ascendant buff, and open hidden Ascendant Chests in the Dreaming City each curse week.

TL;DR

  • The Tincture of Queensfoil grants the Ascendant buff for 30 minutes, making hidden platforms and chests visible.
  • Buy it from Petra Venj in the Dreaming City using Glimmer or Baryon Bough.
  • Petra’s location rotates weekly and tells you which set of Ascendant Chests is active.
  • There are 30 total Ascendant Chests in the Dreaming City, but only 10 spawn each curse week.
  • Opening three counts toward the Treasure Hunt triumph in Monument of Triumph.

What Is the Tincture of Queensfoil?

The Tincture of Queensfoil is a consumable item found only in the Dreaming City. When you use it, you gain the Ascendance buff for 30 minutes. This buff lets you see hidden platforms, portals, and chests that are completely invisible without it.

Without the buff, Ascendant Chests do not appear at all. You will walk right past them and never know they are there. The Tincture is the only way to reveal them.

You can carry up to five Tinctures at a time. One is usually enough to hit three chests in a single run if you move efficiently.

There are two main ways to get the Tincture of Queensfoil.

Buy It From Petra Venj

The easiest and most reliable method is to buy it directly from Petra Venj, the vendor in the Dreaming City. Head to her inventory’s second page, where you can purchase the Tincture of Queensfoil for 5,000 Glimmer. Some sources also list 50 Baryon Bough as the cost, which is a material you can collect through Dreaming City activities. Buy a few before you start chest hunting so you do not run out mid-run.

Farm It as a Drop

The Tincture of Queensfoil can drop from anywhere within the Dreaming City, similar to Dark Fragments. This means completing Patrol Activities, Public Events, and Region Chests all have a chance to reward one. The drop rate is low, so buying from Petra is faster if you need one quickly.

Where to Find Petra Venj

Petra does not stay in one place. She changes her location every Tuesday at the weekly reset. Her position in the Dreaming City is the easiest way to tell which curse week is active, which directly affects which Ascendant Chests are available.

Here is where Petra is based on the curse:

  • The Strand — Weakest Curse week. Petra is near the gazebo in the eastern part of The Strand.
  • Divalian Mists — Growing Curse week. Petra is near the landing zone.
  • Rheasilvia — Strongest Curse week. Petra is in western Rheasilvia, near the tunnel connecting to Divalian Mists.

Always check where Petra is before you start. It tells you which chest set is active that week.

How to Use the Tincture of Queensfoil

Using the Tincture is simple. Open your inventory and go to the Consumables tab. Find the Tincture of Queensfoil and use it. You will see the Ascendant buff appear on the left side of your screen. The Tincture of Queensfoil grants the Ascendant buff for 30 minutes. While the buff is active, you can see and interact with hidden Ascendant platforms and Ascendant Chests that are completely invisible without it.

Once the buff is active, hidden platforms will start materializing as you get close to chest locations. Do not delay once you use it. The 30-minute window goes fast if you are exploring for the first time.

How Many Ascendant Chests Are There?

There are 30 Ascendant Chests to find in the Dreaming City in Destiny 2, but only 10 specific ones will spawn each week depending on where Petra Venj is located, as the strength of the curse on the Dreaming City determines which chests can be opened.

This means you cannot collect all 30 in one week. You need to return across three different curse cycles to reach every chest. For the Treasure Hunt triumph in Monument of Triumph, you only need to open three, so one good run per week is enough to get it done.

Ascendant Chest Locations by Curse Week

The chest locations change each week based on the curse. Here is a breakdown by curse strength to help you plan your run.

Ascendant Chest Locations by Curse Week
Ascendant Chest Locations by Curse Week

Weakest Curse Week (Petra in The Strand)

During the Weakest Curse week, most of the active chests are spread across Divalian Mists and the Spine of Keres. One easy chest is inside the boss room of the Bay of Drowned Wishes Lost Sector in Divalian Mists. Another is found by climbing the cliffs in the east area of Divalian Mists and looking west. A third is available in Spine of Keres by following the path from Divalian Mists and watching for floating platforms near a group of trees on the western edge near the shoreline.

Growing Curse Week (Petra in Divalian Mists)

During the Growing Curse week, Petra stands near the landing zone in Divalian Mists. Chests activate in different parts of the city. Start near Petra and look up. Near a set of statues there will be an ascendant platform. Jump on it and follow the path. It will circle up the room before leading you outside. From there, follow the floating path back in toward the chest.

Strongest Curse Week (Petra in Rheasilvia)

This is the most active week for Dreaming City content. During the Strongest Curse week, hidden Ascendant pathways become accessible in elevated cliffside areas and around large trees overlooking the patrol spaces. Start from Divalian Mists and climb the rocky formations above the landing zone. Follow the hidden path that wraps around the right side of the cliffs to the first chest. Then use your Sparrow and ride toward The Strand for the second chest. Look for the tree on the far right side of the cliff top. The Ascendant platforms will begin materializing from there. If you cannot see them, your buff may have expired — pop another Tincture and they will appear.

How to Complete the Treasure Hunt Triumph

The Treasure Hunt triumph in Destiny 2’s Monument of Triumph update requires you to open Ascendant Chests in the Dreaming City using the Tincture of Queensfoil. You need to open three. Here is the fastest way to do it:

  1. Travel to the Dreaming City and check where Petra Venj is located.
  2. Buy at least two or three Tinctures of Queensfoil from her second inventory page.
  3. Consume one Tincture and confirm the Ascendant buff is active on your screen.
  4. Head to the first chest location for that week’s curse and navigate the hidden platforms.
  5. Open the chest, then move immediately to the next while the buff is still active.
  6. Repeat for three chests total. The triumph completes automatically.

The fastest way to progress the Treasure Hunt triumph is to stock up on several Tinctures of Queensfoil before starting. This prevents interruptions if the buff expires during your search.

If you are working toward the Immortal title, this triumph is one you can knock out early. See the full list in our Destiny 2 Immortal Title guide.

Tips for Opening Ascendant Chests Faster

  • Always have a Sparrow ready. Several chest routes require moving between zones quickly. A Sparrow lets you cover ground between chests without burning through your buff timer.
  • Check Petra’s location before doing anything else. The wrong curse week means the platforms you are looking for will not appear, no matter how long you search.
  • Buy two or three Tinctures at once. One usually covers a full three-chest run, but having a backup means you will not lose progress if the buff expires on a tricky platforming section.
  • Watch the left side of your screen. The Ascendant buff timer is displayed there. If it disappears, use another Tincture immediately before moving on.
  • Use the Last Wish entrance area in Divalian Mists as a landmark. Several chest routes during different curse weeks use the large gate near the Last Wish raid entrance as a reference point. Knowing where it is saves time.

Speaking of the Last Wish raid, if you are exploring the Dreaming City for loot, check our King’s Fall loot table and the Wishing Wall guide for more hidden rewards in the area.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A few things trip players up when hunting Ascendant Chests for the first time.

  • Forgetting to consume the Tincture. This is the most common issue. Without the Ascendant buff, both the platforms and the chests remain invisible. You will find nothing.
  • Using a guide from the wrong curse week. Chest locations rotate. A guide written for the Strongest Curse week will not help you if it is currently the Weakest Curse week.
  • Trying to reach chests that look out of bounds. Many of the platforms and rock ledges leading to chests look like they are outside the playable area. They are not. If you have the Ascendant buff active and a platform is visible, it is safe to jump on.

If you are grinding Monument of Triumph triumphs and need other activities to pair with this one, check out the Monument of Triumph artifacts guide and the Distortions rotation and loot guide for more ways to earn Legendary Marks this week.

What Do Ascendant Chests Drop?

Ascendant Chests in the Dreaming City reward a mix of items including Dark Fragments, additional Tinctures of Queensfoil, and occasionally blue or Legendary gear. They are not the most generous loot source in the game, but they are quick to farm once you know the routes and they count toward Triumphs.

If you want to push your loot grind further in the Dreaming City, all the Tier 5 solo loot chests in the Last Wish are worth knowing about as well.
