The Ohtani Region Treasure Hunt is the very first Treasure Hunt challenge in Forza Horizon 6, introduced as part of the Series 1 Summer Festival Playlist — also called “Welcome to Japan.” The chest is hidden near one of the most recognisable landmarks in the entire game, but if you have not explored that part of the Ohtani Region yet, the photo clue alone will not get you there quickly.
This guide tells you exactly where the chest is, how to reach it fast, and what you earn when you smash it open.
TL;DR — Ohtani Region Treasure Hunt Quick Answer
- Location: Near the Kinkaku-Ji Temple in the Ohtani Region
- Where exactly: Along the gravel track southwest of the temple, right across from the temple on the circular dirt road that surrounds it
- Map landmark: Southwest of the Ohtani Horizon Festival Site — northwest of Mei’s House
- Reward: 100,000 Credits + 3 Festival Playlist points
- How to complete: Drive your car directly over the chest to smash it open — no special task required first
- Bonus tip: Take a photo of the Kinkaku-Ji Temple while you are there for 100 Discover Japan points
What Is the Ohtani Region Treasure Hunt?
Treasure Hunts are a recurring challenge type in the Forza Horizon series. In FH6, they work differently from previous games. Instead of completing a task first to reveal the chest location, FH6’s Treasure Hunts simply give you a photo clue showing the environment around the chest. You need to identify the location from the image and drive there yourself.
The Ohtani Region Treasure Hunt is part of the Series 1 Summer Festival Playlist — the first weekly playlist in the game, which went live alongside the game’s launch. As part of the Summer Season Festival Playlist challenges in Forza Horizon 6, you can now go on a Treasure Hunt in the Ohtani region to get some points towards the seasonal rewards.
The clue given in-game is simply: “Follow the Photo Clue to Discover the Treasure!” The photo shows the chest in the foreground with a traditional Japanese temple visible in the background — and that temple is the key to finding it.

Ohtani Region Treasure Hunt — Exact Location
You can find the Ohtani treasure right across from the Kinkaku-Ji Buddhist temple, which is located pretty much in the middle of the region.
More specifically: the Treasure Hunt in the Ohtani Region is found along the gravel track southwest of Kinkaku-Ji Temple. This temple is southwest of the Horizon Festival Site in Ohtani and northwest of Mei’s House, and there’s a Barn Find not too far away either.
If you zoom in on the Ohtani region, you should see an icon of a temple labelled Kinkaku-Ji Temple. There’s a circular dirt road that goes around the temple, and the treasure chest will be right across from the temple.
Once you arrive at the temple, drive to the road on its back, around the pond, and you will instantly spot the treasure chest thanks to its bright colour. Simply drive your car directly over it to smash it open and collect your reward. No special skill or task is needed first — just drive over it.
How to Get There Fast — Step by Step
Here is the quickest way to reach the Ohtani Treasure Hunt chest from wherever you are on the map:
Step 1 — Open the Festival Playlist
Press the menu or pause button and navigate to the Festival Playlist tab. Select the Treasure Hunt challenge in the Ohtani Region. The photo clue will display, showing the chest near a traditional Japanese temple. If you have the Treasure Map DLC, you can place a marker directly on the chest location. If you do not have it, use the guide below.

Step 2 — Navigate to the Kinkaku-Ji Temple in Ohtani
On your map, locate the Ohtani Region. The Kinkaku-Ji Temple is positioned roughly in the middle of the region — southwest of the Horizon Festival Site and northwest of Mei’s House. It is not far east from the Mech Race Festival Event if you have that on your map.
If you have already visited the temple or a nearby race event, you can fast travel there directly. The temple has a nearby race event that you might have completed — use the race to fast travel. If you have not been to Ohtani yet, navigate there from the Horizon Festival Site using the roads heading southwest.
Step 3 — Enter the Temple Grounds
Enter the Kinkaku-Ji Temple from the main entrance, then turn left and head straight. You are heading for the circular dirt or gravel road that runs around the back of the temple and around the pond.

Step 4 — Find and Smash the Chest
The chest is on the gravel path on the far side of the temple from the main entrance — right across from the main temple building, near the pond. It is brightly coloured and easy to spot once you are on the correct track. Drive your car directly over it to smash it open and collect your reward.
What Do You Earn from the Ohtani Treasure Hunt?
Smashing the chest gives you two rewards immediately:
- 100,000 Credits (CR) — deposited directly into your balance.
- 3 Festival Playlist points — counted toward your Series 1 Summer weekly progression bar.
Those 3 points contribute toward unlocking the Series 1 weekly rewards. These points will help you get to the reward of a few exclusive cars — the Toyota Altezza RS200 Z Edition 1999 for 15 points and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR 2006 for 30 points. Our full Seasonal Events and Festival Playlist guide covers every weekly challenge and reward in detail so you can plan your points efficiently.
If credits are always running low and you want to earn more than just 100,000 CR from a single chest, our guide on how to earn credits fast in FH6 covers all the most efficient methods in the game.
Bonus: Take a Photo of Kinkaku-Ji Temple While You’re There
Since you are already at the Kinkaku-Ji Temple, do not leave without completing the Photography collectible for it. While you are in the area, you can mark off one of the photography challenges and snap a picture of the Kinkaku-Ji temple by pressing the up button on the directional pad. You will get 100 Discover Japan points, which will get you closer to unlocking more Stamps, leading to more Barn Find rumours and new purchasable homes.
The Kinkaku-Ji Temple photography collectible is one of 26 photography targets in the Discover Japan Collection Journal. Each photo earns you 100 points, and completing all 26 gives an additional 500 bonus points. Our Photo Mode guide covers all 26 photography locations and the best technique for each shot.
Bonus: Check for the Nearby Barn Find
The Kinkaku-Ji Temple area in Ohtani is also close to one of FH6’s Barn Find locations. The Honda NSX-R GT Barn Find is found in the Ohtani Region, northwest of Mei’s House and southeast of Kinkaku-Ji Temple. If you have not found this Barn Find yet, it is worth heading there directly after collecting the Treasure Hunt chest. Our full Barn Find locations guide covers every hidden car in the game.
How Treasure Hunts Work in FH6
Treasure Hunts in Forza Horizon 6 are a weekly challenge type in the Festival Playlist. Here is how the system works:
- New chest every week. Each week of the Festival Playlist includes a new Treasure Hunt with a different location. The Ohtani Region chest is the first one in the game, active during Series 1 Summer Week 1.
- Photo clue only. Unlike previous Horizon games where you completed a task to unlock a chest location, FH6 Treasure Hunts simply show you a photo of the surrounding environment. You identify the location and drive there yourself.
- No task required first. You do not need to win a race, score skill points, or complete any precondition. Just find the chest and drive over it.
- Chest respawns weekly. If you miss a week’s Treasure Hunt, it does not carry over. Each week has its own chest tied to that week’s playlist.
- Fixed reward structure. Each chest gives 100,000 CR and 3 playlist points. The credits stack with everything else you earn that session.
Treasure Hunts are one of the easiest ways to earn playlist points each week. Combined with the weekly Photo Challenge, Time Attack, seasonal races, and the Horizon Arcade, they contribute meaningfully to reaching the cars and rewards on the weekly playlist tier. For a complete overview of how the playlist progression works, our Seasonal Events and Festival Playlist guide breaks it all down.
About Kinkaku-Ji Temple in Forza Horizon 6
Kinkaku-Ji is a real Buddhist temple in Japan’s Kyoto region and is a super popular tourist destination. It is known internationally as the Golden Pavilion — a three-storey wooden structure covered in gold leaf, set on the edge of a reflective pond in Kyoto’s northern hills.
In Forza Horizon 6, the Ohtani Region draws inspiration from Kyoto and its surrounding landscape. The Kinkaku-Ji Temple is one of the most carefully recreated landmarks in the game, and it serves as one of the Photography collectibles as well as the backdrop for this first Treasure Hunt. It is a Point of Interest that counts toward 100% completion in the game’s exploration system — drive through the temple grounds to unlock it if you have not already.
How to Get to the Ohtani Region Fast
If you are new to the Ohtani Region and have not yet set up any fast travel points there, here are your options for reaching the Kinkaku-Ji Temple quickly:
- Fast travel to the Horizon Festival Site — The main Ohtani Festival Site is the easiest fast travel point in the region. From there, head southwest to the temple.
- Fast travel to Mei’s House — Mei’s House is one of the early game properties and is northwest of Kinkaku-Ji Temple. Head northwest from the house to reach the temple.
- Fast travel to a nearby race event — If you have completed or started any race events near the temple, those appear as fast travel options. The Mech Race Festival Event is not far east of the temple.
- Buy a House in Ohtani — Owning a house gives you a fast travel point you can use at any time for a credit cost. Our all houses locations and perks guide covers every property in the game, including those in Ohtani.
More Festival Playlist Guides and Rewards
The Treasure Hunt is just one part of each week’s Festival Playlist. Here is everything else worth completing in the Series 1 Summer playlist to maximise your points and rewards:

- Horizon Story Chapter — Complete a chapter of the FH6 story to earn points toward the weekly total.
- Time Attack — Set a lap time on the Sekibe Time Attack track in a Japan A-Class car. Our best cars for every class guide has the best A-Class options for this.
