Who Is Lucas Reyes in Gears of War E-Day?
Lucas Reyes is one of two brand-new characters introduced in Gears of War E-Day, alongside Mags Carter. He is the fourth and final playable member of Bravo Squad, joining Marcus Fenix, Dom Santiago, and Mags when the Locust attack on Emergence Day.
Lucas is the youngest and least experienced member of the squad. His rank is Cadet First Class, and his role in the COG is communications officer. He has never seen frontline combat. He has never fired his weapon at an enemy in a real battle. E-Day is his first taste of the kind of war he grew up hearing about.
That contrast is what makes Lucas interesting. Marcus is a decorated veteran. Dom is a seasoned STG commando. Mags has fifteen years of demolitions experience. And then there is Lucas — a kid who was too skilled at comms to ever make it to the front, now suddenly in the middle of the worst day in human history.

Lucas Reyes Backstory and Lore
Lucas grew up listening to radio stories about Gears defending the COG against the UIR. He idolized soldiers. He wanted to be one. As soon as he and his friends were old enough to enlist, they signed up together through the buddy program. The whole group promised to go in together — so they waited until Lucas, the youngest, turned seventeen.
The COG had other plans. His aptitude scores were too high for the infantry. He was pulled out of the general roster and sent to the academy for Communications Officer training while his best friends went to the front lines without him.
He was never there. He sat behind equipment, coordinating, relaying, while his friends fought the war he had dreamed about. At some point, Lucas illegally rigged an antenna to establish unauthorized contact with the platoon his friends were serving in — he wanted to feel like he was out there with them. The UIR traced the transmission and shelled the entire platoon. Everyone was killed.
Lucas carries that guilt into E-Day. He has no next of kin to name when Bravo Squad registers with Captain Grey. He has no frontline experience. What he has is a desperate need to prove himself — and a war that just arrived at his doorstep whether he is ready or not.
The Coalition describes Lucas and Mags as the “back seat” of Bravo Squad in terms of story focus — Marcus and Dom are in the front. But Lucas is not a filler character. His arc — going from a guilt-ridden rookie with something to prove to someone who earns his place in the fight — is one of the more grounded emotional threads in the game.
Lucas Reyes Voice Actor
Lucas Reyes is voiced by Jake Ryan Lozano. Lozano is a Chicanx/Tejanx actor and movement artist from San Antonio, Texas. His performance gives Lucas a younger, more immediate energy that suits a cadet still finding his footing in the chaos of Emergence Day.
Lucas Reyes’ Role in Co-Op
In solo play, you always control Marcus. In co-op, player four controls Lucas. All four Bravo Squad members are playable from the start of the campaign without any unlock requirements. Lucas is a full first-class option in co-op from the moment you launch the game.
Like the rest of Bravo Squad, Lucas plays identically to the others in terms of movement and combat. The difference between characters in co-op is purely cosmetic and narrative. Playing as Lucas gives a very different perspective on the events of E-Day — watching veterans react to a world ending around them, from the eyes of someone who has never been in it before.

All Lucas Reyes Skins in Gears of War E-Day
Lucas has three skins available at launch. Here is every one and how to get it.
Bravo Squad Lucas
How to unlock: Available by default. No unlock required.
Bravo Squad Lucas is the starter skin and the look Lucas wears throughout the campaign. Every player has this from the moment the game launches. It is clean, squad-appropriate gear that fits his role as the youngest member of Bravo without any grinding or spending required.
Emergence Lucas
How to unlock: Complete Boot Camp.

Boot Camp is the opening tutorial sequence in Gears of War E-Day. It walks new and returning players through the core controls — movement, cover, active reload, and basic combat. Completing it takes a few minutes at most.
Once you finish Boot Camp, Emergence Lucas unlocks automatically. You do not need to do anything extra. Just complete the tutorial and the skin is yours.
This is one of the easiest earnable skins in the entire game. It also awards the FNG achievement (15G) at the same time. “FNG” is an old military slang term for a new recruit — a fitting name for Lucas’s first achievement unlock and a nice piece of lore-consistent design from The Coalition.
If you somehow skipped Boot Camp when you first launched the game, you can go back and complete it from the main menu. There is no time limit and no difficulty requirement.
Ceremonial Lucas
How to unlock: Purchase from the in-game store for 9,000 Coins or 500 Iron.

Ceremonial Lucas is the store-bought skin. It gives Lucas a more formal dressed-up appearance compared to his standard squad loadout. Coins are earned through playing Versus and Horde Siege over time — 9,000 Coins is a grind but fully achievable without spending real money. Iron is the premium currency purchased with real money, and at 500 Iron it is a relatively small spend compared to other cosmetics in the store.
All Lucas Reyes Skins at a Glance
- Bravo Squad Lucas — Default skin, free from the start
- Emergence Lucas — Complete Boot Camp (also unlocks the FNG achievement, 15G)
- Ceremonial Lucas — In-game store: 9,000 Coins or 500 Iron
How to Complete Boot Camp for Emergence Lucas
Boot Camp is the game’s introductory tutorial. It covers the basics every player needs to know before jumping into the campaign or multiplayer. Here is what it teaches:
- Movement and cover — how to roadie run, take cover, and peek around corners
- Active reload — hitting the reload prompt at the right moment for a faster, stronger reload
- Combat basics — aiming, firing, executing downed enemies
- New controls — E-Day redesigned several inputs compared to older Gears games, so Boot Camp is worth doing even for veterans
Once you finish Boot Camp, the Emergence Lucas skin and the FNG achievement both pop at the same time. It is the quickest double reward in the game.

How to Equip Lucas Reyes Skins
Follow these steps to equip a Lucas skin:
- Open the Barracks menu from the main multiplayer hub.
- Navigate to Versus or Horde Siege.
- Select Lucas Reyes from the character list.
- Pick the skin you want to equip and confirm.
A skin appears as fully unlocked when it shows in the list with no lock icon or progress bar. The Barracks is also where you manage weapon skins, poses, banners, and other cosmetics.
How Does Lucas Compare to the Rest of Bravo Squad?
Bravo Squad is designed as a study in contrast. Each member brings something different — not just in combat role, but in how they relate to the war.
- Marcus — the decorated veteran trying to find who he is when there is no war to fight
- Dom — the loyal soldier carrying grief over his brother and fear for his family
- Mags — the discharged expert with fifteen years of experience and a city she calls home
- Lucas — the rookie who wanted to be here his whole life, now facing what that actually means
Lucas is the audience surrogate in a lot of ways. He sees the horror of E-Day fresh. He has no battle-hardened lens to filter it through. That is exactly why The Coalition put him in the squad.
