Who Is Tai Kaliso in Gears of War E-Day?
Tai Kaliso is a fan-favourite character who first appeared in Gears of War 2. He returns in E-Day as a supporting NPC and campaign character — a younger version of the warrior fans already know, appearing on Emergence Day itself in the city of Kalona.
He is not a member of Bravo Squad. He operates as part of Theta Squad during the events of E-Day. But his appearance in the campaign carries major weight for franchise lore — because what Tai does on Emergence Day directly leads to the creation of one of the most iconic weapons in gaming history: the chainsaw bayonet Lancer.

Tai Kaliso’s Backstory and Lore
Tai was born on Irohma Island in the South Islands of Sera. He grew up in a warrior tradition — his tribe raised him with discipline, respect, fearlessness, and wisdom from an early age. He was trained to hunt. He was built for conflict, but approached it with a spiritual calm that set him apart from almost every other Gear in the COG.
The UIR invaded Irohma during the Pendulum Wars. While the main battle raged, Tai used guerrilla tactics to pick off entire enemy squads on his own. Then he returned to his home village and found everyone had been killed.
That was where Marcus Fenix met him. Marcus was on Irohma with COG forces to drive the UIR off the island. He saw what Tai was capable of and made him an offer: join the COG and fight back. Tai accepted. He was recruited personally by Marcus Fenix — a connection that runs through both their histories in the franchise.
The official E-Day description of Tai captures him perfectly: an imposing presence at odds with a quiet, meditative, and thoughtful nature. He considers himself a “warrior-philosopher” — someone who finds beauty in all things, even in war. That philosophy made him look unusual to his squadmates. But it also made him one of the most dangerous and resilient fighters the COG ever had.
Tai Kaliso’s Role in Gears of War E-Day
On Emergence Day, Tai was in Kalona — the same city where Bravo Squad is fighting. He crossed paths with Marcus during the chaos of the invasion, and what happened next changed the franchise forever.
When Marcus’s Mark 1 Lancer Assault Rifle bayonet broke during combat against a Locust Drone, Tai saved his life using a chainsaw. Tai had already seen the potential of a powered saw for cutting through the thick armored hides of the Locust. He was right.
That moment — Tai using a chainsaw to kill Locust where a standard bayonet failed — directly inspired the creation of the Chainsaw Bayonet Lancer. SGM Hank Rustin developed the prototype after seeing what Tai was capable of, and Marcus recommended to his father Adam Fenix that the standard bayonet be replaced. The weapon that defined the entire Gears of War franchise has its origins in Tai Kaliso’s survival instinct on E-Day.
After the initial encounter, Tai was assigned to Theta Squad, which worked alongside Bravo Squad on missions during the Fall of Kalona over the opening days of the Locust War.

Tai Kaliso Voice Actor in Gears of War E-Day
Tai Kaliso is voiced by Maateiwarangi Heta Morris in E-Day. The casting is a deliberate choice — Tai’s character is based on the New Zealand Māori, and having a voice actor from that cultural background gives the character greater authenticity in this prequel. Previous Gears games used a different voice actor for the role.
All Tai Kaliso Skins in Gears of War E-Day
Tai has two skins available at launch. Both are free — no coins, no Iron, no store purchase required.
Bloodied Hunter Tai (Epic)
How to unlock: Available by default as the starting skin for Tai. Also available with the Premium Edition upgrade.
Bloodied Hunter Tai is an Epic-rarity skin and it is the one you have from the moment Tai unlocks in your Barracks. The name and the look reflect exactly who Tai is in E-Day — the hunter, never the hunted. It is a striking, battle-worn design that suits his warrior background.
This skin was also one of the headline Premium Edition cosmetics when the game was in pre-order. The official description read: “No matter the foe, beast or being, Tai Kaliso is always the hunter, never the hunted.” The fact that it is now the default starting skin means every player who unlocks Tai gets an Epic-tier cosmetic for free.
Theta Squad Tai
How to unlock: Progress through Act 1 of the campaign.

Theta Squad Tai is the second skin and reflects Tai’s squad assignment during E-Day. It unlocks automatically as you play through Act 1 — no specific mission requirement or side objective. Just push through the opening act of the campaign and it drops on its own.
The Theta Squad branding connects to a broader set of Theta Squad cosmetics in the game. Several other characters have Theta Squad variants that unlock through different methods in Horde Siege. Tai’s is the easiest of the group — pure story progression.

Is Tai Kaliso Playable in Gears of War E-Day?
Tai is not a playable campaign character. He is an NPC who appears during the story and whose skins are available for use in Versus and Horde Siege multiplayer. In that sense, he functions similarly to the other non-Bravo-Squad characters in the Barracks — unlockable for multiplayer even though his campaign role is in cutscenes and scripted story moments.
The four Bravo Squad members — Marcus, Dom, Mags, and Lucas — are the playable campaign characters. See their individual guides here:

How to Equip Tai Kaliso Skins
Follow these steps to equip a Tai skin:
- Open the Barracks menu from the main multiplayer hub.
- Navigate to Versus or Horde Siege.
- Select Tai Kaliso from the character list.
- Choose the skin you want and confirm.
Tai appears in the Barracks once you have encountered him in the campaign. Both skins will show as selectable with no lock icon once they are unlocked.
Tai Kaliso in the Wider Gears of War Lore
Tai’s story does not end at E-Day. After the events of this game, he continues fighting the Locust War as it escalates across Sera. By Gears of War 2, he holds the rank of Corporal and fights alongside Marcus and Dom again as they try to stop the Locust from sinking all of Sera.
His journey in Gears 2 ends in one of the franchise’s most devastating moments — one that longtime fans will remember. E-Day shows him before any of that, still a younger man defined by his warrior tradition and his unshakeable calm in the face of impossible odds.
The other major lore thread that connects Tai to the wider series is his cousin, Lahni Kaliso, who appears in Gears: Hivebusters. The South Islander warrior tradition clearly runs deep in the Kaliso family.
