Who Is Commander Zee in Gears of War E-Day?
Commander Zee is introduced early in the campaign as the no-nonsense Base Commander of Point Fairlight — a COG Navy installation in the city of Kalona. He is a tough but fair leader, described as a mentor to new recruits, and someone who has earned his rank by repeatedly putting himself in danger to protect others.
He does not give his full name at first. Throughout most of the campaign, he is simply known as Zee. But for any longtime Gears of War fan, there is a familiar shape to the character that starts to feel significant. And at the end of the campaign, that feeling pays off.
Zee is Zander Carmine — the father of Anthony, Benjamin, Clayton, and a fourth unnamed Carmine brother. He is the patriarch of the entire Carmine family that runs through the original Gears of War trilogy.

Zander Carmine’s Backstory and Lore
Zander “Zee” Carmine is a veteran of the Pendulum Wars and a former NCOG Marine. His military career was built on courage — he survived the Emgazi Blitz, a devastating aerial strike that was one of the most destructive events in the final years of the Pendulum Wars. During that event, Zee was in transit through Messa when the attack hit. He made it out.
After the Blitz, Zee built a close friendship with Captain Akila Grey, who also features in E-Day’s story. Over time, he was pushed out of the Marines and reluctantly accepted a promotion to Commander — a rank that placed him behind a desk as Base Commander of Point Fairlight in Kalona. He did not want the desk job. But he took it, and he ran that base the same way he fought: putting others first.
He has a wife named Maddie (Madison Carmine) and four sons. Shortly before E-Day, he wrote Maddie a letter saying he had acquired four Point Fairlight badges for the boys and their collection. He told her he would see her soon. He signed off like a man who expected to survive — and he did.
The letter is findable as a collectible in the game. It is one of the more quietly devastating pieces of environmental storytelling in E-Day, because players who find it early may not realize who they are reading about. After the reveal, going back and re-reading it hits completely differently.
The Carmine Family Connection
The Carmine family is one of the most beloved recurring elements in the Gears of War franchise. Anthony Carmine dies in the original Gears of War. Benjamin Carmine dies in Gears of War 2. Clayton Carmine survives Gears of War 3. A fourth unnamed brother also exists in the lore.
Before E-Day, fans only knew the brothers. Nobody had ever seen their father. Zander Carmine is that father — and E-Day is the first time the Carmine patriarch has ever appeared as a major character in the series.
The reveal also confirms something Gears fans had always assumed: the Carmines are a military family. Zander served in the Pendulum Wars. His brother Will Carmine was also a COG Army veteran. The boys grew up with a father who was a war hero and a base commander. It explains everything about why all four of them ended up enlisting when the Locust War began.
Zander’s COG tag ID — CSID:Z26-A06B0SC11-D0 — is also a nod to the franchise. Fans who know their Gears lore will recognize the structure of the Carmine tag numbering system.
Commander Zee’s Role in the E-Day Campaign
Zee appears as a major supporting character from Act 3 onwards. As Base Commander of Point Fairlight, he is one of the key figures coordinating the COG response to the Locust invasion in Kalona. Bravo Squad works alongside him as the city falls around them.
His official character description: Sterling Point Fairlight Base Commander and former NCOG Marine. Zee has proven time and again during his service that he is willing to put his life on the line to protect others in need. Reluctantly promoted into his current position, he is seen as a mentor to many new recruits, most of whom describe him as a tough but fair leader.
He survives the Fall of Kalona. His quote at the end — “Guess it’s not my day to die” — lands very differently once you know who he is and what you know happens to his sons years later.

All Commander Zee Skins in Gears of War E-Day
There is currently one skin for Zander Carmine at launch.
Commander Zee
How to unlock: Complete all Acts of the campaign on any difficulty.
This is the only skin available for Zee and it is tied directly to finishing the full campaign. Any difficulty counts — Normal, Experienced, Hardcore, or Insane. You do not need to find all collectibles or complete every secondary objective. Just play through to the credits.
The skin unlocks at the same point that his identity is revealed. Before you complete the campaign, the character appears in the multiplayer Barracks simply as “Zee” — his full name, Zander Carmine, is hidden. Once the campaign is done, the skin drops and his name updates to Zander Carmine in the character selection screen.
This makes the Commander Zee skin one of the most meaningful cosmetic unlocks in the entire game. It is not just a cosmetic reward — it is the game acknowledging that you saw his story through to the end.
For a look at all collectibles that tie into Zee’s story, our Act 1 Collectibles guide is a good starting point. The letter to Maddie appears later in the game and is covered in our full secondary objectives list.
