Panthalus in Palworld is one of the most unique Pals in the entire game. It is a Level 70 Legendary Water-type flying whale that you cannot find roaming in the wild — you must earn it through a dedicated quest chain. It is also the key to unlocking the World Tree endgame region. Without Panthalus in your active party, the World Tree barrier will not drop. This guide walks through every step of the process: how to start the quest, all four Echobone locations with coordinates, how to craft the Echoing Flute, how to beat the boss fight, and what Panthalus is used for once you have it.
TL;DR
- Panthalus is Paldeck #204 — a pure Water-type Legendary Pal added in Palworld 1.0.
- It does not spawn in the wild. It is summoned via a dedicated quest chain.
- Start the quest by speaking to the Ancient Civilization Researcher on the Deserted Islet (west of the No Man’s Trail fast travel point).
- You need to collect four Echobones from giant whale skeletons across the map, craft the Echoing Flute, and summon Panthalus at the shrine.
- Echobone coordinates: Marine (122, -525), Seafoam (-519, -548), Silent (356, -110), Tidewind (-262, 485).
- Panthalus is Level 70 with roughly 353,000 HP. It is weak to Electric-type attacks.
- The capture is 100% guaranteed once its HP reaches 1 — throw any Pal Sphere. Do not kill it.
- Panthalus is a flying mount that needs no saddle and acts as a sky patrol base defender.
- Only one Panthalus can be deployed per base. It has no Work Suitability — it is purely combat and traversal focused.
- The quest can only be activated after defeating all Tower Bosses. You can collect the Echobones beforehand.
What Is Panthalus in Palworld?
Panthalus is the Legendary Ocean King — a massive flying whale-type Pal introduced in Palworld 1.0. It was teased in the very first 1.0 trailer, soaring over the World Tree, and it plays a central role in the game’s main story. Its in-game description reads: “The last of its species, keeping its sacred duty close to heart.”
Panthalus is not just another Paldeck entry. It is a mission Pal, a flying mount, a base sky defender, and a story progression requirement all in one. You need it in your active party to unlock the World Tree — the final endgame region of Palworld 1.0. Getting it takes real effort, but the process is completely guided once you know the steps.

Prerequisites – What You Need Before Starting
Before you can trigger the Panthalus quest, you must have:
- Defeated all Tower Bosses — including the new ones added in 1.0 across Palpagos, Feybreak, and Sunreach. The final tower is the Azure Covenant Tower on Sunreach Island, where you face Auri and Shaolong as a duo. See our guide on how to reach Sunreach Island if you have not yet accessed that region.
- A flying mount — the Panthalus fight takes place over open water where ground Pals are useless. You need an airborne Pal. See our guide to the best flying mounts in Palworld 1.0.
- Level 65 or higher recommended — Panthalus is Level 70. Being at a similar level makes the fight manageable. Aim for Level 71+ for full comfort.
Pro tip: You can collect all four Echobones at any point in the game, even before you meet the prerequisites to activate the quest. If you happen to be near any of the whale skeleton locations during normal exploration, grab the Echobone early — it saves travel time later.

Step 1 – Find the Ancient Civilization Researcher
The Panthalus quest begins at the Deserted Islet — a small isolated island located west of the No Man’s Trail fast travel point. It also sits east of Ice Wind Island and north of Twilight Dunes.
To reach it, fast travel to the No Man’s Trail waypoint and fly west with a flying mount, or head north from the Twilight Dunes area. The island is small and easy to spot from the air.
On the island, you will find the Ancient Civilization Researcher — an NPC in a large hat and backpack, standing near a glowing monument. Talk to him. He will hand you the Faded Schematic and mark all four Echobone locations on your world map with golden beacon markers. This officially starts the Panthalus main quest.
After this conversation, the quest entry “To The World Tree” also becomes available in your mission log — you will need to report back to him after the Panthalus fight to advance the World Tree storyline.
Step 2 – Collect All Four Echobones
The four Echobones are hidden inside the skulls of massive, glowing ancient whale skeletons scattered across the Palpagos Islands map. Each skeleton is enormous and unmissable. Once the quest is active, golden beacon pillars of light mark each one from the air, making them easy to spot while flying between locations.
Inside each skeleton, look for a glowing interactable pillar inside the skull cavity. Interact with it to collect the Echobone. Here are all four locations:
1. Marine Echobone – Coordinates (122, -525)

Located west of the Hill of Beginnings and Grassy Behemoth Hills fast travel points, on the shoreline. The skeleton sits on the coast — fly or climb onto the skull and interact with the glowing pillar inside. This is generally the most accessible and closest to the starting area.
2. Silent Echobone – Coordinates (356, -110)

Found just south of the Altar of the Windcaller fast travel point. The whale skeleton sits near the Jormuntide boss spawn area on the coastline. Enter the skull and interact with the glowing pillar. Watch out — a Level 55 Jormuntide patrols the nearby coastline. It is passive unless provoked, but stay aware of its position while collecting the bone.
3. Seafoam Echobone – Coordinates (-519, -548)

Located east of the Eternal Pyre Tower entrance on Mount Obsidian, on the shores of a lava pit area rather than the open sea. This is in a volcanic biome, so bring heat resistance equipment or Fire-resistant armor before heading here. The skeleton sits near scorched terrain — fly to it and enter the skull to claim the bone.
4. Tidewind Echobone – Coordinates (-262, 485)

Found in the Astral Mountains — specifically near the Land of Absolute Zero fast travel point. Head west from that waypoint and drop into the frozen lake below to find the skeleton. This is the coldest biome location in the set — bring at least Level 2 Cold Resistance gear before coming here. The bone is inside the skull of the skeleton on top of the small frozen lake, not the one further north in the cliffs.
Step 3 – Craft the Echoing Flute
Once all four Echobones are in your inventory, return to any base with a workbench. The Echoing Flute can be crafted at any workbench — even the most basic Primitive Workbench works. You do not need an Ancient Workbench or advanced crafting station for this.
Open your crafting menu, find the Echoing Flute in the list (it will appear after you receive the Faded Schematic from the researcher), and craft it using all four Echobones as materials.

Step 4 – Summon Panthalus at the Deserted Islet
With the Echoing Flute crafted, return to the Deserted Islet and speak to the Ancient Civilization Researcher again. He will ask you to play the flute at the shrine beside him — a glowing blue stone structure near his position.
Interact with the shrine and hold the button to activate it. This immediately teleports you to the boss arena and summons Panthalus over the surrounding water. Make sure you are fully prepared before activating the shrine — stock up on the best gear, consumables, and healing items before you interact with it, because the fight begins immediately.
How to Beat Panthalus – Boss Fight Guide

Panthalus is a Level 70 boss with approximately 353,000 HP. The fight arena is a massive open ocean with only a tiny island at the center. Ground Pals are completely useless here — they have nowhere to stand and cannot fight effectively over water. Everything depends on staying airborne.
Critical Rule – Do Not Kill It
This is the most important thing to know before the fight. Panthalus cannot actually be killed. Its HP is scripted to bottom out at exactly 1 HP regardless of how much damage you deal. Once it reaches that point, throw any Pal Sphere — the capture is 100% guaranteed. You do not need a Legendary Sphere, an Ultra Sphere, or any high-tier ball. Any sphere works at the guaranteed capture window.
However, if somehow the fight ends without a capture (for example if you use an item that instantly defeats enemies), you would have to redo the whole encounter. Always be ready with a Pal Sphere and throw it the moment you see Panthalus reach critical HP.
Best Pals to Bring
- Electric-type Pals – Panthalus is a pure Water-type, making Electric attacks super-effective. The best options are Beakon, Orserk, and Helzephyr Lux. Helzephyr Lux is particularly strong because it can work at night and has strong Electric attacks from the air.
- Flying Pals specifically – You need Pals that can fight effectively in the air. Ground combat Pals sitting on the tiny center island will barely contribute. Prioritize Pals that fly and attack naturally.
- Bring a second flying mount as backup — if your primary mount gets incapacitated mid-fight, you need an immediate replacement to stay airborne.
Best Weapons to Use
- High-powered ranged weapons — the fight is at range over water. Rifles, launchers, and high-DPS guns work well. A Rocket Launcher can deal massive damage quickly.
- Equip a Ring of Mercy if you have one — this prevents you from accidentally one-shotting a low-HP target, which removes any risk of accidentally defeating Panthalus before you throw the capture sphere.
Panthalus Attack Patterns
Panthalus uses a full set of exclusive Water-type skills throughout the fight:
- Bubble Rain – Fires a large cluster of homing bubbles that linger and burst on contact.
- Creeping Bubbles – Generates multiple bubbles around the target to surround and attack.
- Aqua Blade – Launches sharp water blades at range.
- Tidal Charge – Slams its body into the target, creating a massive wave on impact. High damage — reposition when this animation starts.
- Maelstrom – Creates a pulling vortex that drags you toward its center before exploding into a high-pressure water pillar. Fly out over the surrounding water when you see this starting.
- Undertow Leap – Dives underwater and leaps out after a short delay, creating ripple damage around the landing zone.
Several of Panthalus’s attacks have near-island-wide coverage, leaving almost no safe space on the ground. Whenever you see a large area attack beginning, immediately fly out over the surrounding water and return once the attack ends. Staying mobile is the core survival strategy for this fight.
Panthalus Weak Point
Panthalus’s weak point is the glowing blue crystal on its forehead and body. Landing attacks here triggers critical damage, shown by large orange damage numbers. Whether using firearms or mounted Pal attacks, always aim for the body center when you have a clear shot.
Recommended Level and Gear
- Aim for at least Level 65, with Level 71+ being comfortable.
- Equip Plasteel-tier armor or better for survival. See the guide on how to get Crude Oil for Plasteel farming if your armor needs an upgrade first.
- Bring plenty of healing consumables — the fight is long due to Panthalus’s enormous HP pool.
Step 5 – Capture Panthalus and Open the World Tree
Once Panthalus reaches critical HP (1 HP), throw any Pal Sphere. The capture triggers automatically and is always successful. Panthalus joins your Paldeck and your active roster.
After capturing Panthalus, speak to the Ancient Civilization Researcher back on the Deserted Islet to advance the quest. This step is required — catching the whale is not enough by itself, you must speak to the NPC to receive the “To The World Tree” quest update.
With Panthalus in your active party, fast travel to the Base of the World Tree at approximately (-835, 711). Interact with the terminal at the front of the barrier. The barrier drops permanently and the entire World Tree region becomes accessible. For what to do once you are inside the World Tree, see our guide on how to unlock the World Tree in Palworld.
What Is Panthalus Used For?
Flying Mount – No Saddle Required
Panthalus is a rideable flying mount from the moment you catch it. Unlike most mounts, it does not require you to craft a saddle. Its partner skill is called Resonant Guardian, which enables mounting. It is described as one of the fastest flying mounts in the game, making it excellent for endgame traversal across the World Tree and Sunreach sky islands.
Sky Patrol Base Defender
When deployed to your base, Panthalus does something no other Pal does. Instead of taking a ground work role, it hovers above your base in the sky and patrols the area. During raids, it actively bombards incoming attackers from above with its Water-type attacks. This makes it a powerful passive base defender that covers aerial angles that ground-based defense Pals cannot reach.
Due to its enormous size, only one Panthalus can be deployed per base at a time.
No Work Suitability
Panthalus has no Work Suitability ratings. It does not perform base tasks like mining, crafting, or transporting. Its value is entirely in combat, traversal, and base defense. Do not expect it to contribute to production — pair it with dedicated workers like Solenne (Handiwork Level 8) or Renjishi (Kindling Level 8) for base tasks.
Key Breeding Component
Panthalus is used in several breeding combinations to produce other valuable Pals. Notably, Dupin + Panthalus and Univolt Cryst + Panthalus are confirmed routes to breed Solenne — one of the most powerful new Pals in 1.0. Breeding Panthalus + Panthalus always produces another Panthalus, which is the only way to get additional copies (since the boss fight is a one-time summon).
Panthalus Skills
All of Panthalus’s active skills are exclusive to it — no other Pal in the game has the same moveset:
- Bubble Rain (Lv. 1) – Homing bubbles cluster and burst on contact. Power: 200.
- Creeping Bubbles (Lv. 7) – Surrounding bubbles attack from multiple directions. Power: 200.
- Aqua Blade (Lv. 15) – Sharp water blades at range. Power: 300.
- Tidal Charge (Lv. 22) – Body slam generating a massive wave. Power: 400.
- Maelstrom (Lv. 30) – Vortex that pulls enemies inward before exploding with a water pillar. Power: 500.
- Undertow Leap (Lv. 40) – Dives and leaps back out, creating ripple area damage.
- Tornado Ascent (Lv. 50+) – Soars into the sky and generates multiple massive tornadoes that slowly track enemies.
Panthalus Drops
When you defeat or capture Panthalus in the boss encounter, it drops:
- Aquatic Pal Fluids
- Large Pal Soul
For more on farming Aquatic Pal Fluids efficiently, see the guide on how to farm Aquatic Pal Fluids in Palworld.
Tips for the Panthalus Quest
- Collect Echobones early. You can pick up all four bones at any time, even before you meet the Tower Boss prerequisites. If you pass near any of the whale skeleton locations during normal exploration, grab the bone and save yourself the trip later.
- Bring heat and cold gear separately. The Seafoam Echobone is in a volcanic area; the Tidewind Echobone is in a frozen biome. You cannot have both resistance types active at the same time with standard armor sets, so plan your route to visit volcanic locations first, then change gear before heading to the Astral Mountains.
- Stow Fire Pals before visiting the Tidewind location. In cold biomes, having Fire Pals in your party provides cold resistance. Swap back to your Electric combat Pals before the Panthalus fight.
- You do not need a high-tier Pal Sphere for capture. The guaranteed capture mechanic at 1 HP means any sphere type works. Save your Legendary and Ancient Spheres for harder wild catches.
- Bring multiple Flying Pals, not just one. If your primary mount gets knocked out mid-fight, you need an immediate replacement in your party to stay in the air. At least two flying Pals in your five-man party is the safe play.
- Fly out over the water during AoE attacks. Most of Panthalus’s island-wide moves have a clear wind-up animation. The moment you see it start, fly away from the center island and return when the attack ends. This avoids most of the big damage spikes.
- Speak to the Researcher after the fight. Do not skip the post-fight dialogue. You need to talk to the Ancient Civilization Researcher after catching Panthalus to receive the World Tree quest update. Without this step, the World Tree terminal will not respond.
Where to Play Palworld
Palworld 1.0 is available on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation. Panthalus and the World Tree were both introduced in the 1.0 full release on July 10, 2026. Learn more at the official Palworld site.
FAQ – Panthalus in Palworld
Where do you find Panthalus in Palworld?
Panthalus does not spawn anywhere in the wild. It is a quest-exclusive boss summoned at the Deserted Islet, west of the No Man’s Trail fast travel point. To summon it, you must collect four Echobones from ancient whale skeletons across the map, craft the Echoing Flute at any workbench, and activate the shrine at the Deserted Islet.
Where are all four Echobones in Palworld?
The four Echobones and their coordinates are: Marine Echobone (122, -525) near Grassy Behemoth Hills; Silent Echobone (356, -110) south of the Altar of the Windcaller; Seafoam Echobone (-519, -548) east of the Eternal Pyre Tower on Mount Obsidian; and Tidewind Echobone (-262, 485) near the Land of Absolute Zero in the Astral Mountains. Each is found inside the skull of a giant whale skeleton — interact with the glowing pillar inside to collect it.
Is the Panthalus capture guaranteed in Palworld?
Yes. Once Panthalus reaches 1 HP during the boss fight, throw any Pal Sphere and the capture is 100% guaranteed. You do not need a Legendary or Ultra Sphere — any tier works at that point. The fight scripts Panthalus to 1 HP rather than zero, so it is impossible to accidentally kill it through normal damage.
What does Panthalus do in Palworld?
Panthalus is a rideable flying mount that requires no saddle. It is also a sky patrol base defender — when deployed at a base, it hovers above and bombards raiders from the air. Only one can be assigned per base. It has no Work Suitability, so it does not perform crafting, mining, or other production tasks. It is essential for unlocking the World Tree when carried in your active party.
Can you breed Panthalus in Palworld?
The only confirmed way to get additional Panthalus through breeding is Panthalus + Panthalus. This means you need a second Panthalus to start — typically borrowed from another player on a multiplayer server. No other parent combination produces Panthalus according to current breeding data.
