TL;DR

  • Mahjong Inferno is played at Little Sparrow Maid Cafe in the Miguel District.

  • It uses only 3 suits: Bamboo, Dots, and Characters. No honor tiles, flowers, or seasons.
  • You must pick a Void Suit before the game starts and discard it as fast as possible.
  • The game continues until the wall runs out — even after someone wins a hand.
  • Rewards include Chirpy Sparrow Balls and Fons, based on your final rank.

What Is Mahjong Inferno in NTE?

Mahjong Inferno is a fast-paced mini-game inside Neverness to Everness. It is part of the City Tycoon life-sim system. The game is based on traditional Mahjong but with some key rule changes that make it quicker and more competitive.

Unlike regular Mahjong, Mahjong Inferno removes honor tiles, flowers, and seasons. You only play with three suits: Bamboo, Dots, and Characters. This keeps the game moving at a much faster pace.

Up to four players can sit at a table. You can play with real online players or AI opponents. It is completely optional and does not affect your main story progress at all.

How to Unlock Mahjong Inferno

Mahjong Inferno becomes available once you reach Hunter Level 11. You access it through the City Tycoon system, not through the main quest menu.

Here is how to find it:

  • Open the Menu on your in-game phone.
  • Select City Tycoon.
  • Go to Hethereau Hobbies.
  • Choose Little Sparrow from the second row.

The game will then mark the cafe’s location on your map and help you navigate there. Check out our full Hethereau Hobbies Guide if you want to learn about the other mini-games too.

Where Is Little Sparrow Located?

Little Sparrow is a maid cafe found in the Miguel District. Look for the maid outfit icon on your map — that is the building. Once inside, head up to the second floor and interact with one of the Mahjong tables to start a match.

If you are having trouble finding it, use the City Tycoon menu shortcut mentioned above. It will plot a route for you even if that part of the map has not been revealed yet.

Mahjong Inferno Rules Explained

Mahjong Inferno follows the basic structure of traditional Mahjong but with some important twists. Here is a breakdown of every rule you need to know before sitting down at a table.

The Three Suits

The game only uses three suits: Bamboo, Dots, and Characters. There are no wind tiles, dragon tiles, flower tiles, or season tiles. This simplifies the game and lets you focus entirely on building tile sequences and sets.

The Void Suit Rule

Before the game begins, every player must choose one of the three suits to be their Void Suit. This is the suit you are not allowed to use in your winning hand. You must discard these tiles as quickly as possible during the game.

This rule is very important. If the game ends (wall depleted, checking for a draw) and you still have Void Suit tiles in your hand, you trigger a penalty called Flower Pig. This forces you to pay a high-multiplier penalty to all players who are in ready hands. Always get rid of your Void Suit tiles early.

The Tile Exchange at the Start

After each player receives their starting hand, everyone picks 3 tiles of the same suit and passes them to the player in the direction shown by the game. This unique rule lets you shape your hand from the very beginning and makes it easier to aim for a strong setup early on.

The Game Continues After a Win

In standard Mahjong, the round ends when one player wins. Mahjong Inferno works differently. When a player wins — whether by discard (Ron) or self-draw (Tsumo) — the game does not stop. The winning player simply draws a tile from the end of the wall and keeps playing. This continues until the wall is completely depleted. A single player can win multiple times in one game.

Scoring and Multipliers

Every player starts each round with 10,000 points, and points reset every round. When you win a hand, your score is calculated by multiplying all applicable scoring patterns together. The more patterns you complete within a single hand, the higher your multiplier gets.

A good strategy is to complete as many small hands as possible before going for a big win. Each win stacks your overall score over time.

Kong Scoring

When you declare a Revealed Kong or a Concealed Kong, points are settled right away. The other three players pay you immediately, even before the hand is won. This means you can earn points from Kongs before finishing a hand, which is a great way to build your score steadily throughout a game.

Mahjong Inferno Tips and Strategies

Mahjong Inferno is not easy when you are new to it. Here are some practical tips to help you perform better from the start.

Autoplay NTE
Autoplay NTE

Use Auto Play to Learn the Basics

If you have never played Mahjong before, use the Auto Play feature built into the game. It handles your moves for you so you can watch how the game works. It is a great way to understand the flow without making costly mistakes in your first few matches.

Watch What Others Are Discarding

Your discarded tiles can be picked up by opponents. Because of this, it is important to track what everyone is throwing away. Hover over one of your own tiles, and the game will highlight identical tiles that have already been discarded. Use this to figure out what tiles are safe to throw and which ones your opponents may want.

Discard Your Void Suit Immediately

As mentioned above, holding Void Suit tiles at the end of the game causes a heavy penalty. Make it a habit to discard your Void Suit tiles in your first few turns whenever possible. Getting them out early reduces risk and keeps your hand clean.

Aim for Small Hands Often

Because the game continues after a win, you are not in a race to win one big hand. Instead, aim to win smaller hands more frequently. Each win adds to your point total and increases your overall rank by the end of the game. Consistency beats one massive hand that takes too long to build.

Use Kongs Strategically

Declaring Kongs collects points from all three opponents instantly. If you have four tiles of the same type, declaring a Kong is often worth it — even if it slightly changes your hand structure — because you get paid right away without needing to win the hand first.

Raise Your Tycoon Level

Your Tycoon Level directly affects the Fons bonus you earn at the end of each Mahjong game. The higher your level, the more Fons you collect when spending City Stamina after a match. It is worth investing in your Tycoon progress to maximize what you get from every game. See our NTE City Tycoon guide for more details on leveling up fast.

Mahjong Inferno Rewards

Playing Mahjong Inferno earns you two types of rewards, both based on your final rank at the end of the game.

Chirpy Sparrow Balls

Chirpy Sparrow Balls are the dedicated Mahjong currency in NTE. They are separate from your general Fons wallet. You earn them based on how well you rank at the end of a game. To spend them, talk to Kureha inside the Little Sparrow shop. You can exchange your Chirpy Sparrow Balls for Annulith, Fons, and various Mahjong cosmetics.

Fons

At the end of every Mahjong session, you can spend City Stamina that matches your final rank to earn Fons. The amount of Fons you receive also gets a bonus based on your current Tycoon Level. This makes Mahjong one of the more efficient ways to earn Fons passively if you are already spending time in the City Tycoon system.

If you want to farm Fons through other methods too, check out our guide on how to get Fons fast in NTE. And if you want to know how to spend Fons wisely on Annulith, see our Annulith farming guide.

Can You Play Mahjong Inferno With Friends?

Yes. Mahjong Inferno supports up to four players, and you can invite friends from your in-game friends list. To do this, add the player as a friend first, then send them an invitation through the Multiplayer menu. Both players need to be on the same server region for co-op to work.

If you do not have enough friends online, you can also be matched with AI opponents or online players through the matchmaking queue.

Is Mahjong Inferno Worth Playing in NTE?

Yes, especially if you are an active City Tycoon player. It gives you a consistent way to earn Fons and Annulith without grinding combat content. The Flower Pig penalty rule and the Void Suit mechanic add a layer of strategy that makes it more interesting than basic Mahjong.

Even if you are not a Mahjong fan, it is worth trying a few games just for the Chirpy Sparrow Balls and the City Stamina-based Fons. If you want to make the most of your time in Hethereau, check out our NTE daily and weekly routine guide to plan your sessions efficiently.
