TL;DR
- New Moon is a medium armor set added in the Hearts of Stone DLC.
- It comes in three tiers: Magic, Master, and Relic.
- The Relic tier is the strongest and has four fixed locations on the map.
- Relic pieces are at Crane Cape (armor), Vikk Watchtower (trousers), a crypt east of Est Tayiar (gauntlets), and Kilkerinn Ruins (boots).
- The full Relic set gives massive crit damage, crit chance, slashing resistance, and bonus gold.
- You first see the set during the Open Sesame! quest, but that version is far weaker.
What Is the New Moon Gear Set?
The New Moon armor set is a medium armor collection introduced in the Hearts of Stone expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It covers all four armor slots — chest, trousers, boots, and gauntlets — and gives Geralt the look of a black-leather rogue or thief.
You will first see this set during the Open Sesame! quest in Hearts of Stone. Geralt wears it as a disguise during the vault heist. However, that version is quite weak. The real prize is the Relic tier, which has fixed locations across the map and is one of the best medium armor sets available in the game.
The set requires Level 34 to 36 to equip the Relic pieces, so make sure you are levelled up before hunting them down. For tips on levelling fast, see our Witcher 3 Remastered Level Up Guide.
This set is also available on the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game. Check the official Nintendo page for The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Remastered for platform details.
New Moon Gear Tiers Explained
Every piece of New Moon gear comes in three versions. Each tier is stronger than the last but has different availability.
- Magic: The weakest version. Drops randomly from chests in the Hearts of Stone area of northeastern Velen. You can also find pieces during the Open Sesame! quest.
- Master: A middle-tier version. You can get the full Master set in one place — the Herbalist’s Hut cellar during the Open Sesame! quest. The Master armor gives 15% resistance to bludgeoning and 25% resistance to slashing damage, plus one random bonus effect per piece.
- Relic: The strongest version. Each piece sits in a fixed, guaranteed location on the map. These do not change between playthroughs. This is the version most players want.
All New Moon Relic Gear Locations
There are four Relic pieces in total. All four are in fixed locations — they will always be there regardless of when you visit. Three cluster in the area northeast of Novigrad near Oxenfurt, while the chest armor sits on a small island off the coast.
New Moon Relic Armor Location – Crane Cape Lighthouse
The chest armor is found inside the lighthouse at Crane Cape, which is on a small island northwest of Novigrad. You can reach it by boat or by swimming.
When you arrive, expect to fight Drowned Dead and a Grave Hag near the lighthouse. Once you clear them, go inside and climb up two ladders to reach the second-highest level. Near the ladder, you will find a sack containing the New Moon Relic Armor. It is not in a chest — it is a lootable bundle sitting right next to the ladder.
- Location: Crane Cape lighthouse, northwest island of Novigrad
- Enemies: Drowned Dead, Grave Hag
- Container: A sack near the ladder on the upper floor
- Stats: +30% Resistance to bludgeoning, +35% Resistance to slashing, +20% Critical hit damage, +5% Critical hit chance, +10% Bonus gold
New Moon Relic Trousers Location – Vikk Watchtower

The trousers are found at the top of Vikk Watchtower, which sits a short ride north of Est Tayiar. Watch out for Harpies circling the ruins when you arrive.
Before climbing to the top, head to the northwest corner of the tower. There is a corpse on the ground. Loot it for a letter and a key. This will unlock the Royal Air Force treasure hunt quest and open the chest at the top.
Now climb to the very top of the ruined laboratory. The chest with the New Moon Relic Trousers is up there. Do not skip the corpse first — without the key, the chest stays locked.
- Location: Vikk Watchtower, north of Est Tayiar
- Enemies: Harpies
- Step: Loot corpse in northwest corner first to get the key
- Container: Locked chest at the top of the ruins (opened with the key from the corpse)
- Linked quest: The Royal Air Force treasure hunt
New Moon Relic Gauntlets Location – Crypt East of Est Tayiar

The gauntlets are inside a crypt set within a large walled garden area, located a short ride east of Est Tayiar.
The area is patrolled by Ghouls and Alghouls, so bring your silver sword and be ready for a fight. The crypt door itself is unlocked, so once you deal with the enemies you can walk straight inside. The chest containing the gauntlets is inside the crypt.
- Location: Crypt in a walled garden area, east of Est Tayiar
- Enemies: Ghouls, Alghouls
- Container: Unlocked chest inside the crypt

New Moon Relic Boots Location – Kilkerinn Ruins

The boots are found in the Kilkerinn Ruins, which sit south of Arnskrone Castle Ruins in the Hearts of Stone area.
There are bandits in the area. You can fight them or ignore them entirely and head for the chest. When you arrive at the ruins, look for the room with the collapsed stairs. Jump across to reach it, then follow the path to the right. The chest is at the highest point of the ruins, near a platformed tree. The New Moon Relic Boots are inside.
- Location: Kilkerinn Ruins, south of Arnskrone Castle Ruins
- Enemies: Bandits (can be skipped)
- Container: Chest at the highest point, near a platformed tree
Quick Location Summary Table
- New Moon Relic Armor: Crane Cape lighthouse, northwest of Novigrad — sack near upper ladder — Drowned Dead, Grave Hag

Full New Moon Relic Set Bonuses
When you equip all four Relic pieces together, the combined bonuses stack up like this:
- +50% Resistance to bludgeoning damage
- +60% Resistance to slashing damage
- +80% Critical hit damage bonus
- +15% Critical hit chance
- +25% Bonus gold from enemies
The set is perfect for an aggressive, fast-hitting build that hits hard and earns more gold at the same time. The crit bonuses pair especially well with fast attack builds and sign-heavy combat styles. Where to Get the Master Set (Easier Option)
If you are not yet Level 34 or just want a decent New Moon set faster, you can grab the complete Master tier set in one single location. During the Open Sesame! quest in Hearts of Stone, there is a chest in the cellar of the Herbalist’s Hut. It contains all four Master pieces — armor, trousers, boots, and gauntlets — in one go.
The Master set is weaker than the Relic version but still gives you the iconic black leather look and solid resistances while you work toward the Relic pieces.
Does New Moon Gear Appear in New Game Plus?
Yes. In New Game Plus, the New Moon set scales up with your starting level. The Relic pieces will still be in the same fixed locations. The level requirements increase to match the NG+ difficulty scaling, so the set remains useful into late-game NG+ runs.
