- The Sanctum of Penitence has three separate loot rewards. Most players only find one or two of them.
- The main cleansing reward is the Kuku Pack blueprint, handed over by Elowen after you restore the pillar.
- A hidden secret chest in the ruins contains the Blackwing Leather Gloves, part of the Crowcaller’s Blackwing armor set.
- The optional Blinding Flash dial puzzle rewards the Core of Penitence, used to craft the Kuku Lightning-Resistance Armor.
- You must reach Chapter 5 and unlock Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom, before you can cleanse this Sanctum.
- If you miss the Core of Penitence, you can recover it from Carl at Howling Hill camp for 1 Silver Coin.

The Sanctum of Penitence loot in Crimson Desert is spread across three separate rewards, and most players leave with only one of them. This guide covers every item you can get here, where to find each one, and what they are used for. All information is current for 2026.
Sanctum of Penitence Location and Requirements
The Sanctum of Penitence sits southeast of Hernand City, past the Goldleaf Trading Post and near the Sanctum of Temperance. Fast travel to the nearest point and ride to it on horseback.
You cannot access the loot or puzzle until you meet two requirements:
- Chapter 5 or later — the Sanctum is locked until you reach this point in the story.
- Unlock Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom — her questline activates the Sanctum of Penitence and three other Sanctums in the Hernand region.
Once those are met, you also need to clear the Antumbra Order forces occupying the Sanctum before you can interact with anything. Defeat all enemies until the liberation progress bar drops to 0%. The Antumbra Order are religious zealots armed with traditional melee weapons. They are not especially difficult, but you need them gone before the puzzle and loot become available. Loot Reward 1 — Kuku Pack Blueprint (Main Cleansing Reward)
The Kuku Pack blueprint is the primary reward for cleansing the Sanctum of Penitence. Elowen hands it to you in a cutscene after the generator is restored. You do not need to find a chest or solve an optional puzzle to get this one — it is the automatic reward for completing the cleansing.
How to Cleanse the Sanctum of Penitence
This is one of the simpler Sanctums. You only need one repair piece, unlike other Sanctums that require two.
- Face away from the main machine toward the south. Walk into the ruins until you reach a staircase with broken flooring.
- The Fusion Reactor Core is in the rubble below the staircase. Pick it up with Axiom Force and store it in your Kuku Pot.
- Carry the core back to the broken pillar at the main Sanctum structure.
- Unseal the core from the Kuku Pot and place it at the base of the damaged pillar.
- Climb on top of the pillar and use a jumping Force Palm to push the core down into position and lock it in place.
Once the pillar is restored, the generator activates and the cutscene with Elowen plays. She hands over the Kuku Pack blueprint immediately. This blueprint is what unlocks the base Kuku Pack at Grimnir’s workbench, which is itself the prerequisite for crafting the Insect Gatherer’s Pack and other Kuku Pack variants. Loot Reward 2 — Blackwing Leather Gloves (Hidden Secret Chest)
The Blackwing Leather Gloves are hidden inside a secret chamber beneath a collapsible floor section in the ruins. Most players walk right over this spot without knowing it exists.
How to Find the Hidden Chest
- After clearing enemies and before or after fixing the pillar, face the main machine and turn to look at the stairs behind you.
- To the left of the stairs is a wall section you can climb. Climb up it.
- Once on the elevated walkway, look for the area with four small columns overlooking the main puzzle area.
- Walk toward the wall at the very front of this section. The floor here is structurally weak.
- Stand on the weak floor spot and wait. The floor collapses and Kliff drops into a hidden chamber below.
- Open the treasure chest inside. It contains the Blackwing Leather Gloves.
What Are the Blackwing Leather Gloves
The Blackwing Leather Gloves are part of the Crowcaller’s Blackwing armor set. They offer a strong combination of offensive and defensive stats for this stage of the game. The standout quality is an unusually high level 2 critical rate bonus for a single equipment piece found this early, combined with passive health regeneration. That combination of burst damage potential and sustained survivability makes these gloves genuinely useful rather than throwaway loot. Loot Reward 3 — Core of Penitence (Optional Dial Puzzle)
The Core of Penitence is the reward for completing an optional Blinding Flash dial puzzle that appears after you cleanse the Sanctum. This is completely separate from the main cleansing and the hidden chest. Many players skip it entirely.
How to Solve the Blinding Flash Dial Puzzle
- After cleansing the Sanctum, a dial mechanism becomes active at the front of the generator.
- Look for the blue crystal at the center front of the Sanctum structure.
- Use Blinding Flash (L1+R1 on controller, then L1 again to fire) to direct light into the crystal.
- This starts the dial rotating. Small gem-like stones sit on the outer rim of the dial.
- Activate Blinding Flash only when a gem is aligned at the top of the dial. Release it when stone gaps pass through the top position instead.
- A metallic sound cue plays when you time it correctly. Listen for it — it sounds like a sword striking metal. Use that sound to calibrate your timing rather than relying on visual judgment alone.
- Complete a full rotation of the dial without resetting it. If you flash onto a stone gap instead of a gem, the dial resets and you start again.
- Once the full circuit is complete, the Core of Penitence drops from the mechanism.
- Pick it up with Axiom Force (L3) and store it in your Kuku Pot with Triangle/Y.
What Is the Core of Penitence Used For

Missed the Core of Penitence — How to Recover It
If you completed the cleansing but did not do the dial puzzle — or if you did the puzzle but did not store the core in your Kuku Pot in time — you can recover it. Go to Carl at the Howling Hill camp and look under the Recover Items tab. The Core of Penitence is available there for 1 Silver Coin. This recovery option exists for all Sanctum Cores, so you are never permanently locked out of crafting recipes tied to them.
