TL;DR
- The Arboria Castle Strongbox is in the basement of Arboria Castle, surrounded by spider webs, in the Hills of No Return northeast of Hernand
- Solve it by rotating five cylinders downward: 3 – 4 – 5 – 4 – 2, then press and turn the knob on the right
- Each rotation is complete when you hear an audible click — turn up volume if you struggle to hear it
- The reward is an Equipment Manual, which is the instruction guide for the Elixir Factory inside the castle
- The Equipment Manual only becomes useful once you have the “Abandoned Factory” faction quest from House Celeste
- You need to defeat the Queen Spider as part of the House Celeste questline before the factory quest activates
- There is also a hidden free inventory bag nearby — grab it outside the castle southeast of the entrance
What Is the Arboria Castle Strongbox?
Strongboxes in Crimson Desert are high-tier locked containers that require solving a puzzle to open. They show up as white chest icons on the minimap and tend to be tucked away in well-guarded or hard-to-reach spots. The Arboria Castle Strongbox is one of the more distinct ones — instead of sliding tiles or sequential button presses, it uses a five-cylinder dial mechanism that you need to set to the correct depth before triggering the lock.
The reward inside is an Equipment Manual, which functions as an instruction guide for the Elixir Factory machinery inside the castle. On its own, the manual is just a readable item. Its real value kicks in when you are on the “Abandoned Factory” faction quest from House Celeste — more on that below.

Arboria Castle Location
Arboria Castle sits in the Hills of No Return area of Hernand, northeast of Hernand City, between the Hernand and Demeniss regions. The castle is accessed by crossing the Hook Rapids.
When you arrive, the entire castle is completely overrun with spiders. Every floor is infested, and the top tower is home to the Queen Spider, who has made it her nest.
The fastest way to get there is to use the nearest Abyss Nexus fast travel point in Hernand and ride northeast toward the Hills of No Return. Our guide on how to fast travel in Crimson Desert covers all the fast travel mechanics if you need a refresher.
Arboria Castle Strongbox Location — Inside the Castle
Once inside the castle, there are two versions of directions you will see depending on which part of the castle you approach first.
Route 1 (from the main entrance): Enter the castle through the front entrance and take a right. Continue until you reach the yellow and red tank structures. From those tanks, take a left to enter the main castle interior. You will find a small staircase to your right. Go up the staircase and the Strongbox is in the left corner of the room at the top.
Route 2 (deeper in the castle): Some guides place the Strongbox in the basement at the center of Arboria Castle, surrounded by thick spider webs. If you come from deeper inside the castle, head to the basement level and look for the spider web-filled central room. The Strongbox is there.
Both routes lead to the same place. The Strongbox is well-marked by the surrounding cobwebs — you cannot miss it once you are on the right floor.
Important: You need to have a Mask equipped to claim the reward after opening a Strongbox, or the option to take the item will not appear. Masks are bought from Back Alley Merchants or looted from bandits. Our guide on how to steal items in Crimson Desert covers this mechanic.

Arboria Castle Strongbox Puzzle Solution
The Strongbox uses a five-cylinder wheel mechanism. The goal is to align all five cylinders at the same height in the middle. You do this by rotating each dial downward the correct number of times, then pressing the knob on the right to lock it in.
Before you start: Reset all five wheels to the fully raised (top) position first. This gives you a clean baseline. The scroll counts below all assume you are starting from the top.
The solution (left to right, rotating downward):
- Cylinder 1: Rotate down 3 times
- Cylinder 2: Rotate down 4 times
- Cylinder 3: Rotate down 5 times
- Cylinder 4: Rotate down 4 times
- Cylinder 5: Rotate down 2 times
Each rotation is complete when you hear an audible click. Each full rotation actually produces two clicks internally, so if you are counting clicks rather than rotations, the total click counts are: 6 – 8 – 10 – 8 – 4. Turn up the game volume if you are struggling to hear the clicks clearly.
Once all five cylinders are set, press the knob on the right first, then select the option to turn it. This ordering matters. If you turn without pressing first, the Strongbox will not open.
What if I made a mistake? If a cylinder is in the wrong position, simply adjust it up or down until you reach the correct count. The wheels are not one-directional — you can correct misinputs without resetting the whole thing from scratch.
After the knob is turned, the Strongbox opens and you can take the Equipment Manual from inside.

What Is the Equipment Manual and Is the Strongbox Worth It?
The Equipment Manual is a readable item that contains the operating instructions for the Elixir Factory machinery inside Arboria Castle. Reading it teaches you the sequence of steps needed to restart the factory.
Here is the honest answer: the Strongbox itself is optional and the Equipment Manual alone has no practical effect. You can read it, but nothing happens until you are on the right quest.
The factory only becomes properly operational as part of the “Abandoned Factory” (Restarting the Elixir Factory) faction quest from House Celeste. The Equipment Manual is essentially an early peek at the instructions you will follow later during that quest.
That said, solving the Strongbox is still worth doing if you are going for full completion — it counts toward the Crimson Desert Trophy List and All Achievements. And since you will be in the castle anyway for the House Celeste quests, you may as well knock it out at the same time.
How to Unlock the Elixir Factory Quest
If you want to get actual rewards from the factory beyond just the Equipment Manual, here is what you need to do:
Step 1 — Progress through House Celeste faction quests in Hernand. These become available during Chapter 3, but you need to have been completing them progressively. They are tied to Hernand exploration and House Serkis quest progression. Specifically, you need to complete up to stage ten of the House Serkis faction quests — just after you liberate Fort Anvil and return the seal.
Step 2 — Complete the Queen’s Nest quest. This unlocks alongside the factory quest. It tasks you with heading to Arboria Castle and dealing with the spider infestation.
Step 3 — Defeat the Queen Spider. The factory door will not open until the Queen Spider is dead and the castle is cleared of all spiders. The Queen Spider spends a lot of time on the walls, so use ranged attacks — arrows and your bow are your best tools here. Our Crimson Desert How to Beat Flying Enemies guide has useful tips that apply to wall-climbing bosses too. For a full rundown of all boss encounters, see our Crimson Desert All Bosses Locations guide.
Step 4 — Restart the Elixir Factory. Once the Queen Spider is down and the area is clear, the “Abandoned Factory” / “Restarting the Elixir Factory” quest activates. You now have the full objective to operate the factory machinery and brew the perfect elixir. Our complete guide on how to restart the Elixir Factory in Crimson Desert walks through every step in detail.
Elixir Factory Quest Rewards
Completing the factory quest — not just the Strongbox — gives you the real payoff:
- Freya’s Greater Elixir — attack buff
- Apollonia’s Greater Elixir — defense buff
- Meliara’s Greater Elixir — HP and attack speed buff
- Queen’s Fangs Abyss Gear — one of the best weapon upgrade cores available in Hernand
- Fertilizer Sprayer — needed for a later House Celeste quest
- Stirrups of the Open Sky (Footwear reward)
- Arboria Castle unlocked as a Greymane Dispatch location — lets you send Comrades on passive resource missions from here
The Queen’s Fangs Abyss Gear alone makes the questline worth doing as soon as it unlocks. Equip it immediately after the fight. If you want to know more about setting up your Comrades for dispatch missions, our how to get and level up Comrades guide has everything you need.
Hidden Bonus — Free Inventory Bag Near the Castle
Before leaving the Arboria Castle area, look southeast of the castle entrance for a bag placed next to a broken cart. Interact with it to receive 10 additional inventory slots for free. This is a huge quality-of-life upgrade that most players miss entirely while focused on the castle puzzles. Our guide on how to increase inventory space in Crimson Desert covers all the other ways to expand your carrying capacity too.
Tips for the Castle Visit
Bring plenty of healing food and Palmar Pills. The spider gauntlet leading to the Queen is long and drains your supplies fast. Stock up before entering. Our guide on how to cook best healing food in Crimson Desert covers the best options and our Refined Palmar Pill Recipe Location guide ensures you have the best revive pills going in.
Use arrows for smaller spiders. The smaller spider enemies around the castle go down cleanly with ranged attacks. Save your stamina and Axiom Force for the Queen herself.
Make a manual save before touching the factory. Right after defeating the Queen Spider but before interacting with any machinery, save manually. If any lever becomes unresponsive mid-sequence, you can reload cleanly from before the factory puzzle started.
Explore thoroughly. Abandoned locations like this one in Hernand often contain hidden chests. Check every corner for loot beyond the Strongbox and factory rewards. The Arboria Forest Fountain Puzzle is also nearby and worth solving in the same trip.
