TL;DR
- Boss Rematch is an endgame system added in Patch 1.05.00, expanded in Patch 1.07.00 to 74 bosses.
- You need the Visione (your lantern) and must have already defeated the boss in your save file.
- Return to the boss’s original location and light your lantern at the Memory Fragment there to trigger the rematch.
- Find Memory Fragment locations via Journal → Knowledge → Memory Fragments → Bosses.
- Two modes: Reminisce (boss at original stats) and Resonate (boss scaled to your current level).
- All consumables used during a rematch are fully restored when the fight ends — win or lose.
- No loot or rewards drop from rematches. The system is purely for skill testing and build practice.
- You can rematch bosses as any of the three characters — Kliff, Oongka, or Damiane — even if they were not the character who originally cleared the boss.
The Crimson Desert Boss Rematch system is the answer to one of the biggest player requests after launch — the ability to go back and fight any defeated boss again on demand. Before Patch 1.05.00, clearing a boss meant it was gone permanently. Now, every defeated boss has a Memory Fragment at its original encounter site that you can activate at any time to run the fight again. This guide explains exactly how to start a rematch, what each mode does, and how to get the most out of the system. What Is the Boss Rematch System?
Boss Rematch is a Patch 1.05.00 addition that lets you re-fight any boss you have already defeated during your campaign at any point after clearing them. Once a boss is killed for the first time, a Memory Fragment permanently appears at that boss’s original arena location. You can return, activate the fragment with your lantern, and run the encounter again from scratch as many times as you want.
The system launched with 69 eligible bosses and expanded to 74 in Patch 1.07.00. Pearl Abyss has confirmed the roster will continue to grow through future updates. It was designed as an endgame skill and build testing tool — not a reward farm. You earn no loot from rematches, but you also lose nothing: all consumables you use during the fight are returned to you when it ends.
The Boss Rematch system works alongside the Re-Blockade system as the two flagship endgame loops from the Patch 1.05.00 update. If you want to understand how re-blockades work as well, check our guide on how to stop re-blockades in Crimson Desert.
Requirements to Start a Boss Rematch
Two things are required before you can rematch any boss:
- The boss must already be defeated in your save file. Memory Fragments only appear after you clear the original encounter during the campaign. There is no way to access a rematch before the first kill.
- You must have the Visione — your core lantern tool. The Visione is used to read and activate Memory Fragments in the world. It is obtained naturally through story progression, so if you have reached the endgame, you already have it.
How to Start a Boss Rematch — Step by Step

Method 1 — Go Directly to the Boss Location
- Travel to the location where you originally fought the boss.
- Once in the area, raise your lantern (or use Blinding Flash) and look around for the Memory Fragment. It appears as a red shadowy shape of the boss.
- Shine your lantern on the Memory Fragment until the pop-up prompt appears.
- Choose your rematch mode — Reminisce or Resonate.
- Confirm to launch the encounter. The arena and intro animation play exactly as they did the first time.
Method 2 — Find Bosses Through the Journal (Recommended)
If you are not sure where a boss was originally fought, use the Journal to navigate directly:
- Open your Journal.
- Go to Knowledge → Memory Fragments → Bosses.
- The full list of all bosses you have cleared appears here with their Memory Fragment status.
- Select any boss and tap Open Map in the bottom-right corner to pin its exact location directly onto your world map.
- Fast travel to the nearest point and head to the marked location.
This is the fastest method, especially early in your rematch experience when you may not remember exactly where every boss was fought. Memory Fragment icons also appear on both the world map and the minimap once you are near them. On a zoomed-out map, the easiest way to spot them is to use the Environment tab — they are visible in the All mode too but easier to identify this way.

Reminisce vs Resonate — Which Mode to Choose
When you activate a Memory Fragment, you choose between two modes before the fight starts. Each one serves a different purpose.
Reminisce — Boss at Original Stats
Reminisce spawns the boss exactly as it was when you first fought it — the same stats, health pool, damage output, and attack patterns from the original campaign encounter. No scaling, no changes.
This mode is best for:
- Measuring your growth. If a boss that once challenged you now feels easy in Reminisce, that is a direct measure of how much stronger your build has become.
- Build benchmarking. Running the same fight against fixed stats gives you a clean comparison between different weapon setups or Abyss Gear combinations.
- Learning attack patterns. At a lower difficulty, you can take your time to study the boss’s telegraphs, parry windows, and stagger phases without the pressure of dying quickly.
Resonate — Boss Scaled to Your Level
Resonate dynamically scales the boss’s stats up to match your current progression. This only activates if you are stronger than the boss was originally — if you are not, Resonate defaults to the boss’s original difficulty.
The boss does not gain new abilities or animations. Its attack patterns stay the same as the original encounter. Only the health, damage, and defensive stats are increased to keep pace with your character.
This mode is best for:
- Endgame challenge. Late-game players who have outscaled most campaign bosses can use Resonate to bring encounters back to a genuine threat level.
- Testing a new build under pressure. If you want to see how a new weapon or Abyss Gear loadout performs against a truly difficult opponent, Resonate is the right setting.
- Ongoing replayability. As your gear improves over time, Resonate adjusts accordingly, so the same boss can keep scaling to challenge you through multiple upgrade cycles.

Consumables and Rewards — What You Keep and What You Don’t
The Boss Rematch system has a straightforward resource policy:
- Consumables are fully restored after every rematch — win, lose, or quit. Any food, elixirs, drinks, or healing items you use during the fight come back to you when the encounter ends. You do not need to cook or prepare supplies specifically for rematching.
- No loot drops from rematches. Bosses do not drop gear, materials, Silver, or any progression items during a rematch encounter. The system is designed for skill and build testing, not farming. Pearl Abyss has said this may change in future patches, but as of the current version, rematches reward nothing except the experience itself.
Character Selection — Play as Any of the Three Characters
One of the most useful features of the rematch system is the ability to fight any boss as Kliff, Oongka, or Damiane — regardless of which character was used to clear it originally. During the main story, certain boss fights force you to use a specific character. In a rematch, all three are freely available.
This makes rematches an excellent way to explore how different characters handle the same encounter and to get more playtime with Oongka and Damiane outside of their story segments. How to Find Memory Fragments on the Map
Memory Fragment icons appear in several ways once a boss is defeated:
- On the world map — visible when zoomed in near the original encounter area.
- On the minimap — appears when you are close to the site.
- Through the Environment map tab — the easiest way to see all available fragments at a glance when viewing the full world map from a zoomed-out perspective.
- Via Journal → Knowledge → Memory Fragments → Bosses — the most reliable method, listing every available rematch and allowing you to pin any location directly to your map.
How Many Bosses Are Available for Rematch?
The system launched with 69 bosses in Patch 1.05.00 and grew to 74 in Patch 1.07.00, which added five new encounters and moved some Abyss-locked fights to previously accessible land-based locations. Pearl Abyss has confirmed further expansion through future updates. Not every enemy in the game qualifies — only the named bosses encountered as part of story and faction progression are part of the system.
Best Ways to Use the Boss Rematch System
- Use Reminisce first, then Resonate. Run a boss in Reminisce to learn or relearn its patterns at low pressure, then switch to Resonate for a second run to see how your current build handles it at full difficulty. This two-pass approach is the most efficient way to get value from each rematch.
- Use rematches as a free training ground. Because consumables are refunded, you can run a difficult boss repeatedly to practice parry timings, dodge windows, and stagger phases without spending healing resources. The camp training dummy is useful, but nothing replaces actual boss patterns.
- Use the Journal to navigate efficiently. Scanning the open world for Memory Fragment icons is slower than simply opening Journal → Knowledge → Memory Fragments → Bosses and using the map pin feature to jump straight to your target.
- Try each boss with a different character. Some encounters play very differently depending on whether you use Kliff, Oongka, or Damiane. Rematches are the best opportunity to explore this without any story consequences.

Boss Rematch and the Spearsmanship Contest — Different Systems
It is worth noting that Boss Rematch is separate from activities like the Spearsmanship Contest, the Archery Contest, and other minigames in Hernand. Those are standalone repeatable activities with their own entry fees and reward structures. Boss Rematch applies specifically to the named story and world bosses encountered during your campaign — accessed through Memory Fragments at their original arena sites.
Crimson Desert is available on the official Pearl Abyss site, Steam, PlayStation Store, Xbox, and the Epic Games Store.
