Crimson Desert Best Weapon Abyss Gears & How to Get Them

TL;DR

  • Weapon Abyss Gears slot into your weapons to add powerful attack effects and stat boosts.
  • Two-handed weapons hold 5 sockets. One-handed weapons hold 3 each.
  • The Abyss Gear system unlocks in Chapter 3 — visit any Witch to create sockets and embed gears.
  • Top weapon picks: Groundsurge, Crow’s Pursuit, Greysoul Howling, Insight III, Relentless, Infinite Arrows II + III.
  • Extract Abyss Gears from looted weapons at any Witch — you don’t have to equip the original item.
  • Save before Special Synthesis if you’re chasing specific gears — it’s RNG-based.

Weapon Abyss Gears are the biggest power spike you’ll find in Crimson Desert. Gear score barely changes between items, but slotting the right Abyss Gears turns an average weapon into a boss-destroying machine. Below, we cover every top weapon Abyss Gear, why it’s worth having, and exactly how to get it — no fluff, no filler.

How Weapon Abyss Gears Work in Crimson Desert

Abyss Gears are modifiers that slot into sockets on your weapons and armor. Each one adds a unique effect — from triggering a shockwave on Turning Slash to boosting your Critical Rate by a flat number. You unlock the system during Chapter 3 of the main story.

Weapons and armor don’t come with open sockets by default. You need to visit a Witch and pay Silver to unlock each slot. Socket costs scale from 5 Silver for the first slot to 40 Silver for the fifth, totalling 105 Silver for a fully opened five-socket weapon.

Here’s how many sockets each weapon type has:

  • Two-handed weapons (Greatswords, Spears, Great Axes, Bows): 5 sockets
  • One-handed weapons (Swords, Daggers, Axes, Maces): 3 sockets each

Once you find an Abyss Gear — whether from looting an enemy weapon, a chest, or crafting — you can take it to any Witch and extract it, then embed it into whatever weapon you actually want to use. You never have to equip the original item.

Witches with full synthesis support include Elowen (Hernand), Bari (Pailune), Lyselia (Demeniss), and Areciel (Crimson Desert region). For a strategy on unlocking the Witch system, see our guide on how to unlock Witches and Abyss Gears.

Best Weapon Abyss Gears in Crimson Desert

We’ve split these into categories based on attack type so you can plan your sockets properly. Remember — you want your Abyss Gears to match the attacks you actually use. Stacking five gears that all trigger on moves you never use is a waste of sockets.

1. Groundsurge (Turning Slash) — Best Overall Weapon Abyss Gear

groundsurge
groundsurge

Effect: After a Turning Slash (RB+RT / R1+R2), Groundsurge shatters the ground in a frontal cone. The fissure hits all enemies in the path, then re-triggers shortly after for a second explosion — great for both stun buildup and direct damage.

This is widely considered the best Turning Slash Abyss Gear in the game. On bosses, it builds the stun meter fast and shaves off a huge chunk of health. On groups, the AoE cone clears whole packs. It pairs perfectly with Momentum (see below) for a devastating combination.

How to get Groundsurge: Extract it from Melted Ambition, a sword you receive by defeating Myurdin during the “Decisive Battle” quest in Chapter 7’s Main Story. You can’t miss it — it’s a direct story drop.

2. Crow’s Pursuit (Heavy Attack) — Best for Dual Wielding

crow s pursuit

Effect: On a Heavy Attack (RT / R2), Crow’s Pursuit sends out a murder of tracking crows that chase nearby enemies. They auto-lock onto targets, deal solid damage, and build stagger fast — even hitting enemies your swing missed.

This is the cornerstone of the dual-wield meta build. Combined with Shadow Claw on the same weapon, every Heavy Attack triggers two layered effects — crows plus three forward slashes — turning you into a crowd-clearing machine. It’s also great for bosses because it keeps dealing damage while you reposition.

How to get Crow’s Pursuit: Extract it from the Tauria Curved Sword (also called the Crowcaller’s sword). You can also pull it from items found through the Crowcaller questline. Once extracted, socket it into any melee weapon you prefer. See our Crowcaller Quest Guide for the full walkthrough.

3. Greysoul Howling (Turning Slash) — Best for Single-Target Damage

Greysoul Howling
Greysoul Howling

Effect: After a Turning Slash, Greysoul Howling calls forth the phantom of Goyen for a sweeping strike of shadow energy. This is a high-damage follow-up that hits a single target hard and pairs with Groundsurge to stack two triggered effects off one Turning Slash.

The weapon Fated Shadow comes with Greysoul Howling pre-embedded. Most top-tier melee builds stack this with Groundsurge and Momentum to make Turning Slash the only attack they really need. It’s the cleanest path to one-shotting non-boss enemies in the mid-to-late game.

How to get Greysoul Howling: Obtain the Fated Shadow weapon — it comes with Greysoul Howling already socketed. You can then extract it and move it to your preferred weapon at any Witch. Keep an eye on our Best One-Handed Swords guide for weapon options to pair with it.

4. Shadow Claw (Heavy Attack) — Best Heavy Attack Follow-Up

Shadow Claw
Shadow Claw

Effect: On a Heavy Attack, Shadow Claw unleashes three forward swipes, dealing additional damage in a wide arc. It pairs directly with Crow’s Pursuit for a dual heavy-attack combo that makes every single Heavy Attack trigger two separate effects at once.

Shadow Claw is locked behind a longer questline, so you won’t have it in early game. But once you do, it’s a staple of aggressive play — especially in dual-wield builds where Heavy Attacks are your main tool.

How to get Shadow Claw: Shadow Claw is obtained through a longer Faction questline. It’s worth holding off on finalising your weapon sockets until you have it, as Crow’s Pursuit + Shadow Claw together are stronger than almost any other two-gear heavy attack combo.

5. Insight III (Critical Rate) — Best Stat Abyss Gear for Weapons

insight iii
insight iii

Effect: Insight III adds +3 Critical Rate to the weapon it’s socketed in. Stack it with weapons that already have Critical Rate bonuses from upgrades, and you’ll land critical hits on nearly every swing — dealing double damage consistently.

This is a must-have for any build that wants reliable, high-damage output. Unlike skill-trigger gears, Insight III doesn’t require a specific attack — it just makes everything hurt more. If you’re running a Critical Rate boss build, this is non-negotiable.

How to get Insight III: Craft it at any Witch by purchasing the Blueprint from Areciel, the Witch of Strength, found in the Crimson Desert region. Once you have the Blueprint, any Witch can craft it for you using the standard synthesis system.

6. Relentless (Consecutive Attacks) — Best for Sustained DPS

relentless
relentless

Effect: Damage increases with consecutive attacks. The more you hit without being interrupted, the more damage each swing deals. With the right stun-locking Abyss Gears keeping enemies in place, Relentless can double or even triple your effective damage per attack chain.

Relentless shines in builds that use crowd-control gears — Groundsurge, Crow’s Pursuit, and Shadow Claw all stagger enemies, giving Relentless time to stack. If enemies keep hitting back, Relentless underperforms. Pair it with gear that locks enemies down.

How to get Relentless: Extract it from the Combat God’s Plate Gloves. These are obtained by defeating Muskan in the Bonepit during the “Emperor of the Bonepit” Tommaso Faction Quest. See our full Combat God’s Plate Gloves and Bonepit walkthrough for step-by-step help.

7. Volcanic Eruption (Fire Imbue — Turning Slash) — Best Elemental Weapon Gear

Effect: When Imbue Element (Fire) is active, Volcanic Eruption triggers after a Turning Slash. It shatters a molten boulder and launches four fireballs in an AoE explosion, dealing massive fire damage to everything nearby. It requires Imbue Element Lv 1 and Fire Element Lv 1 to activate.

This is the go-to elemental weapon Abyss Gear for AoE damage. Combined with Groundsurge and Momentum on the same Turning Slash, the burst output is enormous. It works best against groups, but is still strong against single targets — especially bosses you can keep staggered. Read our full Volcanic Eruption Abyss Gear guide for more detail.

How to get Volcanic Eruption: There are two ways:

  • Loot the Scorchflame Plate Gloves from a Treasure Chest inside Cascade Grotto (behind the waterfall along the Denn River, west of Demeniss). Enter the waterfall using Stab (R1+Triangle / RB+Y).
  • Defeat Flame Knight Tristan in Demeniss — he also drops the Scorchflame Plate Gloves.

You can get two copies this way, though one is enough for most builds. Check the Scorchflame Armor Set locations for more detail on the Flame Knight gear.

For more on using elemental attacks, see our guide on how to use elemental attacks and imbue elements.

8. Infinite Arrows II + Infinite Arrows III (Bow Builds) — Best Bow Weapon Abyss Gears

Effect: Each Infinite Arrows gear gives a percentage chance to not consume an arrow when you fire. Infinite Arrows II grants 40% chance. Infinite Arrows III grants 60% chance. Together, they stack to a combined 100% effective arrow conservation — meaning you never run out of arrows.

For bow builds, this combination is non-negotiable. It’s especially broken with Explosive Arrows, which are powerful but expensive. Never run out mid-boss again. Avoid the 100% Greater variant — it has durability and breaks mid-fight.

Check out our OP Infinite Arrow Archer Build and the guide on how to get and use Replenishing Arrows for the full archer setup.

How to get Infinite Arrows II + III:

  • Infinite Arrows III: Craft at Elowen (Hernand Witch) using a Tier 3 Abyss Gear Fusion. You meet Elowen during “The Witch of Wisdom” questline.
  • Infinite Arrows II: Also crafted through the Abyss Gear Fusion system. The best way to target both is through Special Synthesis at Icewatch Altar (see farming section below).

9. Warden of Darkness (Finisher) — Best Finisher Abyss Gear

Effect: Triggers on a Finisher attack (Light Attack on a staggered or weakened enemy). Warden of Darkness deals roughly 70% of a standard enemy’s health bar in a single activation — making it by far the strongest finisher in the game. Nothing else in the Finisher category comes close.

How to get Warden of Darkness: Found through late-game exploration and loot. Keep an eye out for it when clearing enemy camps and dungeons, especially in Demeniss and Varnia.

10. Malicebane (Boss Damage) — Best Anti-Boss Abyss Gear

Effect: Significantly increases your damage output against bosses. It’s a flat damage multiplier that only kicks in on boss-type enemies — making it ideal to swap in before major boss fights.

How to get Malicebane: Extract it from Wolf’s Fang, a sword obtained during Chapter 7. It’s a story-progression item, so you’ll pick it up naturally as you play. Check our All Bosses Locations guide to prepare for the fights ahead.

Weapon Abyss Gear Slot Guide — What Goes Where

Knowing the best gears is one thing. Knowing which socket to put them in matters just as much. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Two-handed weapon (5 sockets): Groundsurge, Greysoul Howling, Volcanic Eruption, Insight III, Relentless or Malicebane
  • Main-hand one-handed (3 sockets): Crow’s Pursuit, Shadow Claw, Insight III
  • Off-hand one-handed (3 sockets): Crow’s Pursuit, Relentless, Groundsurge
  • Bow (5 sockets): Infinite Arrows II, Infinite Arrows III, Destruction II or III, Rampaging Insight, Malicebane

Don’t stack more than two heavy attack gears (Crow’s Pursuit, Shadow Claw, Ator’s Orb) on one weapon — the Stamina drain becomes unmanageable with three.

For weapon recommendations to pair with these gears, check out our Best Unique Weapons and Armor guide. If you’re working with swords specifically, see Best One-Handed Swords and the Advanced Combat Guide.

How to Farm Weapon Abyss Gears Fast

Best Early Farm: Icewatch Altar (Disarm Method)

The fastest renewable source for Abyss Gears is Icewatch Altar, located southwest of Forebearer’s Barrens between Pailune and the Crimson Desert. This area is packed with shield-carrying enemies who can be disarmed — and their weapons come pre-loaded with Abyss Gears.

Here’s the basic loop:

  • Equip a small shield and sword (attack type doesn’t matter).
  • Aggro the enemies without killing them — keep them alive so the area doesn’t reset.
  • Parry their attacks using Block (LB/L1) + Heavy Attack (RT/R2) to disarm them.
  • Pick up the dropped weapons.
  • Repeat until your inventory is full.
  • Take everything to a Witch, extract all Abyss Gears, sell the empty weapons for Silver.

Bring ice-resistant gear — see our Ice Resistance and Frost Protection guide. Make sure you have food ready too — check how to cook the best healing food.

Best Late Farm: Time-Worn Ruins (Renewable Abyss Artifacts)

The Time-Worn Ruins (north of Bordig, southwest of the desert fast-travel point) is the best renewable source of Abyss Artifacts. Notable drops include Infinite Arrows and Legion Main. You can usually visit it right away without special unlock requirements.

The Bordig Ruins (inside the Crimson Desert) are unlocked by defeating all Tash Kelp outlaw leaders. These focus on gathering gears like Blessings of Beast, Earth, and Forest — useful if you want a gathering-focused build.

Using Special Synthesis for Rare Gears

Regular Synthesis is deterministic — two Destruction I gears always make one Destruction II. Special Synthesis is RNG-based. You combine one Abyss Gear with one Catalyst Gear (usually from the Icewatch Altar farm) and get a random result. This is the best way to chase Infinite Arrows II and III.

Save scum tip: Always save before doing Special Synthesis. If you don’t get what you want, reload and try again. This is how most players guarantee Infinite Arrows without grinding hundreds of cycles. For more on how to save in the game, see how to save in Crimson Desert.

Weapon Abyss Gears to Avoid

Not every Abyss Gear is worth your socket space. Here are a few to skip:

  • Wound of Darkness (Turning Slash): Drops from a tough boss in the Sanctum of Absolution, but the damage and AoE is too low for the Spirit cost. Just use plain Turning Slash instead.
  • Dark Crescent (Spinning Slash): Adds a weak single-target projectile. If you want a Spinning Slash gear, use Hound’s Claw — it’s better in every way.
  • Arrow Rain (Finisher): Arrows can literally miss enemies. Avoid this entirely.
  • Crow Storm / Queen’s Fang / Piercing Bloom (Stab): Stab gears require you to line up enemies in a straight line. There’s no reliable group-up mechanic, so these gears rarely land cleanly. Skip unless you’re in very specific situations.
  • Fullmoon / Crescent Moon / Halfmoon Slash (Light Attack): Only worth using together on an off-hand weapon in a dual-wield build. Solo, they do almost nothing useful.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Weapon Abyss Gears

  • Prioritize Gear Refinement: Abyss Gear damage scales with your weapon’s Refinement level. A refined weapon with two gears will often beat an unrefined weapon with four. See our guide on how to reinforce equipment.
  • Extract, don’t discard: Found a weapon with a useful Abyss Gear but ugly looks? Extract the gear at any Witch and embed it into the weapon you actually want. There’s no penalty.
  • Save Greater Abyss Gears for big bosses: Greater Abyss Gears are far more powerful than Tier III, but they have durability and break after extended use. Save them for toughest bosses like Ator, Archon of Antumbra or Beloth, the Darksworn.
  • Don’t stack three heavy attack gears: The Stamina cost becomes unmanageable. Stick to two at most and fill the remaining socket with a utility or stat gear like Insight III.
  • Match gears to your playstyle: Specialising in one attack type (e.g. all Turning Slash gears) gives higher peak damage. Diversifying gives better general coverage. Choose based on your preferred build approach.

Final Thoughts on Best Weapon Abyss Gears in Crimson Desert

Your weapon stats matter a lot less than what’s socketed into them. Once you start stacking Groundsurge, Crow’s Pursuit, and Insight III together — and keeping enemies staggered with Relentless — the game opens up completely. Bosses that felt impossible become manageable, and regular enemies go down in seconds.

Focus on unlocking sockets early, farming Icewatch Altar for raw Abyss Gear stock, and using Special Synthesis to chase the specific gears you need. Save scum freely — that’s the intended approach for getting rare outputs without grinding forever.
