TL;DR
- The Spearsmanship Contest is a Weapon Duel: Spear minigame located northeast of Lioncrest Manor, northwest of Hernand Town.
- You need a spear equipped in your secondary slot — halberds and cannons do not count. It must be specifically named a spear (or a lance like Elite Vanguard).
- Entry fee is 45 Copper, refunded on your first win.
- Rules are strict: spear-based attacks only. No kicks, punches, Axiom Force, Imbue Element, or armor with automatic effects like Slashing Reeds.
- You can use Turning Slash — it is allowed. Imbue Element is not.
- Win 3 contests in a row to unlock the Champion: Hector the Impaler.
- Key tactics: use the spear’s reach, hit first, maintain pressure, avoid corners.
- Upgrade your personal spear — your gear matters; opponents use standard equipment.
How to join and win the Spearsmanship Contest in Crimson Desert is one of those questions that comes up regularly because the arena is easy to miss and the rules are strict enough that one wrong move causes instant disqualification. This guide covers the exact location, what equipment you need, every rule you must follow, and the best strategy to build a three-win streak and take down the Champion. Spearsmanship Contest Location
The Spearsmanship Contest arena is located northwest of Hernand Town, on a plateau in the hills just northeast of Lioncrest Manor. It sits slightly above and north of the manor on the map. The easiest way to find it is to fast travel to Hernand Town and head north into the hills.
You will recognize the spot immediately when you arrive. It is a large rectangular arena with soldiers training against dummies when no contest is active. The whole area is set up as a dedicated dueling ground — structured and clearly marked. An NPC host stands at the center of the arena. Speak to them to register for the contest.

How to Join the Spearsmanship Contest
Before speaking to the host, you must meet one requirement: have a spear equipped. The game will prompt you if you arrive without one. This is not optional — the contest will not start without a spear in your loadout.
Spear Equipment Rules — What Counts
The weapon must be equipped in your secondary slot and must be something specifically named a spear. Weapons that look like spears but are classified differently do not qualify:
- Allowed: Any weapon explicitly named a spear in its item description, or unique weapons like Elite Vanguard that identify themselves as a lance.
- Not allowed: Halberds, cannons, and other polearm-type weapons that function similarly but are not classified as spears.
If you are looking for a strong spear to bring into the contest, check our guides on how to get the Elite Vanguard and how to get the Soul Spear in Crimson Desert. Upgrading your personal spear matters — your opponent uses standard equipment, so better gear gives you a genuine damage advantage.
Joining Steps
- Travel to the contest arena northwest of Hernand Town, northeast of Lioncrest Manor.
- Equip a spear in your secondary weapon slot before approaching the host.
- Speak to the host NPC at the center of the arena.
- Choose to participate. The host gives you a brief rules explanation.
- Pay the entry fee of 45 Copper. This fee is refunded if you win your first match.
- The duel starts immediately with no countdown — be ready before paying.
Spearsmanship Contest Rules — Read These Before You Start
The rules are strict. A single violation causes instant disqualification regardless of your health advantage or how close you are to winning. The game enforces every rule automatically.
What Is Allowed
- Basic spear strikes and spear combos
- Spear lunges, thrusts, spinning slashes, and forward slashes
- Spear-based counters and dodges
- Turning Slash — explicitly allowed
What Is Prohibited — Causes Instant Disqualification
- Kicks, punches, or unarmed attacks
- Non-spear weapons or fighting styles
- Imbue Element — even if imbuing a spear, this causes disqualification
- Axiom Force or any Axiom Power abilities
- Bombs or throwable items
- Armor with automatic effects — this is a major trap. If you are wearing armor like Slashing Reeds that triggers a passive effect when you hit enemies, that passive will fire during the duel and disqualify you. Swap off any armor with automatic on-hit effects before entering the contest.
- Leaving the designated rectangular arena boundary for too long
Before entering the contest, check your armor. Passive automatic effects on gear are the most common reason players get disqualified without understanding why. Strip off any armor that procs on contact and replace it with plain gear for the duration of the duel.
How to Win Spear Duels — Strategy and Tips
Your opponents in the Spearsmanship Contest have more health and deal more damage than standard enemies. You cannot rush in and spam attacks carelessly. Every move needs to be deliberate. The large rectangular arena gives you room to work with, which means spacing, timing, and patience are your main tools.
Hit First and Keep Pressure
There is no countdown before the duel begins — the match starts the moment fees are paid. Get into position and land the first hit as fast as possible. Hitting first interrupts your opponent’s opening combo before they can build momentum. Once you are in an offensive run, keep the pressure consistent rather than backing off mid-combo. Opponents will recover and counter if you give them space.
Use the Spear’s Reach
The spear’s primary advantage over most close-range weapons is its longer attack range. Use this to your benefit. Stay at the edge of your effective range and poke at your opponent from a distance they cannot easily close. Let them come to you rather than charging in. Thrust attacks and forward slashes that keep distance are more reliable than spinning combos that bring you too close.
Avoid the Corners
If you get pushed into a corner of the rectangular arena, your movement options collapse. You lose the ability to reposition and your opponent can close the distance freely. If you find yourself backed into a corner, run to the center of the arena and wait for your opponent to close in before re-engaging on your own terms. Center position gives you the most options.
Upgrade Your Spear
Unlike your opponents who use standard-issue weapons, you fight with your own equipped gear. A well-upgraded spear deals noticeably more damage and shortens duels significantly — fewer hits needed means fewer opportunities for a disqualification error. Use refinement upgrades on your spear before attempting the three-win streak. See our guide on how to upgrade weapons and armor in Crimson Desert for the full refinement system. Stay Calm After a Stagger
Opponents will occasionally stagger you with a heavy hit. Do not panic and throw out a non-spear attack out of reflex — this will get you disqualified instantly. After a stagger, back up, reset your position, and re-engage with a clean spear combo. Staying disciplined under pressure is the whole point of the contest.
How to Unlock the Champion — Hector the Impaler
Beating standard opponents earns Silver and builds your streak. The real reward comes from the Champion: Hector the Impaler. Here is how to reach him:
- Win three Spearsmanship Contests in a row. These must be consecutive wins — any loss resets your streak back to zero.
- After your third consecutive win, Hector the Impaler enters the contest as the next opponent.
- Defeat Hector to complete the Spearsmanship Duel challenge and claim the unique reward.
All the same rules apply against Hector. He hits harder and is more aggressive than standard opponents, so spacing and patience matter even more for this fight. Stick to the same strategy — hit first, use reach, avoid corners, and do not let a stagger push you into an illegal attack. Completing this challenge contributes toward the True Gamer trophy and achievement. For the full challenge list, see our trophy list and all achievements guide.
Rewards
- Entry fee refunded on first win
- Silver coins for each subsequent win — rewards scale with win streak
- Unique prize for defeating Hector the Impaler
- Completion of the Spearsmanship Duel challenge (part of the True Gamer achievement chain)
Common Mistakes That Cause Disqualification
- Using Imbue Element — very easy to do by habit if it is part of your normal combat rotation. Remove it from your muscle memory before entering.
- Wearing armor with passive procs — Slashing Reeds and similar armor pieces trigger automatically and will disqualify you. Always check and swap armor first.
- Bringing a halberd or cannon — they look like spears but are not classified as spears. The game will either block entry or disqualify you mid-fight.
- Using Axiom Force instinctively — if it is bound to a quick button, be careful not to accidentally trigger it during combat.
- Leaving the arena boundary — the rectangular arena has edges. Staying inside them is required. If you get pushed near the edge, redirect toward the center.
