Crimson Desert Reed Devil Boss Guide — How to Track and Beat the Devil of the Reed Fields

Learn how to track and beat the Reed Devil in Crimson Desert. This guide covers all three boss phases, how to survive the cliffside gauntlet, preparation tips, and the best skills to use.

TL;DR

  • The Reed Devil appears in Chapter 3 as part of the “Traces in the Manor” and “The Face Behind the Mask” quest chain
  • Press the Lantern button to track the Reed Devil’s trail through the Reedwind Valley
  • Skip the cliffside gauntlet — ride your horse and ignore respawning enemies to save food and stamina
  • Before the fight, unlock the Abyss Cresset near the arena for a fast travel point
  • Bring 40+ healing food items — this is a tough three-phase fight
  • Phase 1: Wait for the Reed Devil to sheathe his blade, then attack — use Blinding Flash to interrupt the Swift Stab
  • Phase 2: Ignore the clones, sprint to all five scarecrows and destroy them fast — a Turning Slash one-shots each one
  • Phase 3: Prioritize dodging over blocking — especially against the ranged sword-slash wave attack
  • You can learn Swift Stab from the Reed Devil during this fight — observe it twice to unlock it

The Reed Devil is the first boss in Crimson Desert that will genuinely test you. This is a test of your resources, as well as how leveled your gear is — and the path to the arena is full of enemies that will chip away at your food supply before the real fight even begins. Most players hit a wall here, not because the boss is unfair, but because they arrive underprepared.

This guide covers everything: how to track the Reed Devil, how to prep before the fight, and a full phase-by-phase breakdown so you know exactly what to do.

When Do You Fight the Reed Devil?

You first hear about the Reed Devil in Chapter 3, during the Traces in the Manor quest. The trail begins at Glenbright Manor, where you pick up his scent. The full boss fight takes place as part of the main quest “The Face Behind the Mask,” where you track him using your lantern before eventually reaching a secluded area where the fight begins.

Tracking and following the Reed Devil are part of the Nonhuman and Seed of Unease quests. So don’t skip those — they’re all connected.

Prepare Before You Go: Gear and Stats

Don’t rush into this fight straight from the main quest. If you’ve only followed the main quest up to this point, chances are you’ll be underleveled and poorly equipped. Your base Stamina and Health should be around level 4 to level 5 before attempting this fight. If you need to swap your build first, check our guide on how to respec in Crimson Desert.

Here’s what to sort out before heading to Reedwind Valley:

Stamina first. Stamina is crucial for both attack and defense — the Reed Devil uses a lot of fast attacks, so you’ll be running and dodging constantly throughout the second and third phases. Invest your Abyss Artifacts here first.

Bring lots of food. The Reed Devil has three full health bars, so bring at least 40 or more grilled meat. If you don’t have enough healing items, you’ll have a very hard time. Check our guide on how to cook the best healing food in Crimson Desert to stock up fast.

Sword and Shield setup. The Sword of the Lord — earned after beating Kailok the Hornsplitter in Chapter 2 — is your best weapon here. Shields are more stamina-efficient for blocking compared to two-handed swords and spears, and they have decent attack speed. Visit a grindstone to buff your damage before heading in — there’s one in Thinker’s Meadow, just southeast of the Greymane Camp at Howling Hill. If you want to experiment with a dual-wield offense approach in the later phases, see our dual wield guide.

Skills to have ready. Get Keen Senses level 2 before this fight. The first level gives you a parry, but the second level gives you an enhanced evade — both are critical for surviving the Reed Devil’s fast attack patterns. You should also unlock Blinding Flash before heading in — it lets you stun the Reed Devil mid-combo and is especially effective at interrupting his Swift Stab. For a full breakdown of what to prioritize, see our best skills to level up first in Crimson Desert guide. For a deep dive on the parry and dodge mechanics this fight demands, read our parry, counter, and dodge guide.

If you need to top up your defense stat before heading out, the guide on how to increase defense level in Crimson Desert is worth a quick read. Same goes for increasing your attack level to make sure your damage output is solid enough.

How to Track the Devil of the Reed Field

Once you’re ready, start tracking the Reed Devil by pressing the Lantern button to illuminate his trail. Follow the glowing trail as Kliff makes his way toward Reedwind Valley.

As you get closer, the ambushes get worse. Waves of enemies will keep spawning around you. The Reed Devil himself will even join in some of these fights to make them harder.

The Cliffside Gauntlet — Skip It

Here’s the most important tip for this section: don’t fight your way through. You can skip the lead-up to the Reed Devil fight by simply following his trail to the very end. The smaller enemies will distract you, then the Devil will appear and hit you — which can easily be a deadly combo that drains your food supply before the real fight.

Get on your horse. Ride hard and follow the lantern trail. Ignore everything that spawns. You’ll save your food and stamina for the boss fight itself. Check our horse guide if you need tips on mounted movement.

If you do want to fight the enemies for loot — they drop random items you can use to make money fast in Crimson Desert — that’s fine, just know you’re spending resources before the real fight starts.

First Encounter With the Reed Devil

Eventually, the Reed Devil will make his first appearance just before Kliff reunites with Andrew and Naira. He’ll escape. The tracking quest objective will then reappear, sending you further up the mountain.

Unlock the Abyss Cresset Near the Arena

Right near the boss arena is an Abyss Cresset location. Activate it before the fight — this gives you a fast travel point so you can restock and return quickly if you’re defeated. Don’t skip this step. It will save you a lot of time on retries.

Entering the Boss Arena

Once Kliff reaches the vast open field of reeds at Reedwind Valley, the real fight begins. Enter the area and find the tree with an altar to interact with it. This triggers the boss fight.

How to Beat the Reed Devil — All Three Phases

The Reed Devil boss fight has three phases. One of them is completely different from normal combat. Here’s exactly what to do in each one.

Before the Fight: Sharpen Your Weapon

Right before the boss battle, you’ll find a Grindstone on the left side of the reed field. Sharpen your sword here for a free attack bonus going into the fight.

Phase 1: Read the Pattern, Then Strike

Phase 1 looks scary at first. The Reed Devil is fast and aggressive. But once you recognize his rhythm, it becomes manageable.

The pattern: The Reed Devil launches a series of attacks, then pauses and sheathes his blade. That pause is your window. Hit him with a basic weapon attack combo or a Forward Slash combo during that brief moment of stillness.

Keep your window short. After one combo, dodge and raise your shield immediately — the Reed Devil will follow up quickly. Don’t get greedy. One clean combo per opening is the right play.

Force Palm is very useful here. This skill lets you build up the boss’s Stun Meter (Yellow Bar), breaking his guard and letting you land more attacks in a single opening. By consistently parrying and using Force Palm between attacks, you can fill the Yellow Bar to exhaust him and create an extended damage window.

Blinding Flash is a powerful tool in this phase. Use Blinding Flash to temporarily stun the Reed Devil mid-combo and interrupt his Swift Stab before it connects. Timing is everything — if used correctly, it stops his most dangerous attacks cold.

Watch for the Swift Stab. Your screen turns blue right before he uses it. Dodge sideways to avoid it — and don’t try to block it. After observing it twice, you’ll unlock the skill for yourself. Keep a safe distance occasionally to bait him into using it if you want to learn it quickly.

Running Kick also helps. Using a Running Kick is a good way to stop the Reed Devil from circling around you.

Repeat this pattern — wait, hit, dodge — and Phase 1 becomes straightforward. For a deeper look at the parry timings this phase rewards, see our parry and counter guide.

Phase 2: Ignore the Clones, Destroy the Scarecrows

Phase 2 is where most players get confused. The Reed Devil creates multiple copies of itself that swarm you from every direction. They’re relentless.

Here’s the key: the boss has no health bar in this phase. Instead, he has four circles that you deplete by destroying five scarecrows scattered around the arena.

The best advice for this section is to run for your life. Sprint from one scarecrow to the next. Use a Turning Slash (hold both attack buttons for a charged strike) to destroy each scarecrow — it one-shots them and the wind-up animation gives you flinch resistance. Watch out for the red energy waves the clones send your way and dodge as they come in. Consider zooming out the camera for a better view of incoming attacks.

Do not fight the clones. Every second you spend on them is time the scarecrows survive. Ignore everything and sprint directly to each scarecrow. Destroy all five and the phase ends.

Phase 3: Dodge Everything, Especially the Ranged Attack

Phase 3 brings the Reed Devil’s health bar back. It plays similarly to Phase 1, but faster and more dangerous.

The attack window is much tighter now. The Reed Devil attacks almost immediately after finishing his combos. Dodging and blocking become your top priority over offense.

Watch for the ranged sword-slash wave attack. The Reed Devil will jump toward the edge of the field and launch a barrage of crescent-shaped projectiles that you have to dodge. Don’t try to block this one. When he fires red blades or performs the Swift Stab, do not attempt to block — use your enhanced evade to move out of the way.

He will teleport around Kliff and use the ranged attack several times in a row before returning to melee range. Keep your distance and dodge each wave cleanly.

Stay close to the Reed Devil in Phase 3 — the parry technique from Phase 1 still works here. Use it when you can. Heal with food after any hit that gets through. Blinding Flash remains effective in this phase to interrupt his Swift Stab and buy yourself a recovery window.

What You Get for Beating the Reed Devil

Once defeated, you’ll receive the Sunset Reed Cloth Gloves from the Reed Devil. These start at Refinement Level 1, with Attack 11, Defense 1, and Attack Speed Level 1. They come with two perks — the Slashing Reeds counter effect (triggered when you’re hit) and passive +0.2 HP/sec health regeneration — making them especially valuable for dodge-based builds. You’ll also earn +600 Hernandian Contribution XP toward your regional standing, which unlocks access to higher-tier vendors.

There’s a full Reed Devil armor set to collect beyond the gloves — including the Hollow Visage sword and the Sunset Reed Leather Armor. See our guide on where to find the Reed Devil armor set and Hollow Visage sword to complete the look.

You’ll also earn an Abyss Artifact for completing the fight. To get the most out of it, check the guide on how to get skill points in Crimson Desert and our best early build guide to decide where to spend it wisely.

During the fight itself, you can also learn the Swift Stab skill from the Reed Devil by watching him use it — you need to observe it twice to unlock it. Don’t miss that opportunity.
