TL;DR
- The Sanctum of Temperance is in Pororin Forest, southeast of Hernand City.
- You cannot start this puzzle until Chapter 5 — meet Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom, first.
- Clear all Umbra enemies first. The puzzle locks completely while any enemy is alive in the area.
- Find the Fusion Reactor Core at the bottom of the stairs. Seal it in your Kuku Pot.
- Burn the vine wall behind the Core spot with Blinding Flash to find a secret chest — Odeck’s Protector Plate Boots inside.
- Burn more vines to climb to the roof. Drop through the ceiling hole to grab the Fusion Reactor.
- Place the Reactor on the broken pillar and Aerial Force Palm it in. Insert the Core into the square slot on the machine.
- Rewards: Kuku Lightning Spear Blueprint and Kuku Bird Boltspitter Blueprint.
The Sanctum of Temperance is the first real test of Elowen’s quest in Crimson Desert. It’s not just a fight — the puzzle is a multi-step mechanical repair job that requires the right abilities, the right items, and a good eye for hidden paths. This guide walks you through every step from clearing the area to getting both blueprints.
For the full breakdown of how Elowen’s quest works and where to find all four of her sanctums, see our all witches locations guide.
You can play Crimson Desert on PC via Steam, Epic Games, PlayStation, and Xbox.
Sanctum of Temperance Location In Crimson Desert

The Sanctum of Temperance sits inside Pororin Forest, southeast of Hernand City. Travel past the Goldleaf Tradepost and head south. The Sanctum entrance is a crevice in the cliff face — look carefully, as it blends into the rock wall.
If you have a fast travel point near the Goldleaf Tradepost or anywhere in the southern Hernand forest, use it. On horseback from Hernand City, the ride takes about two minutes following the eastern road south.
Important: You cannot interact with this Sanctum before reaching Chapter 5 and meeting Elowen. If you visit too early, a voice says you haven’t met the right person yet. The Sanctum’s puzzle elements are completely inactive until Elowen’s quest is active in your journal. Track the quest under Journal → Faction Quests → Hernand Witches → Witch of Wisdom.
Step 1 — Clear All Umbra Forces (Liberation Bar to 0%)
When you arrive, the Sanctum is Occupied. A liberation progress bar appears on the left side of your screen. You must fight Umbra forces until this bar hits 0% before any puzzle interaction becomes available. The puzzle mechanisms are fully locked while even one enemy remains alive inside the perimeter.
The enemy mix here includes:
- Standard Antumbra melee fighters on the ground
- Flying Antumbra wizards on the broken walls above
The flying wizards are the biggest nuisance. They hover out of standard melee range and cast ranged spells. For handling them, read our dedicated guide on how to beat flying enemies in Crimson Desert. In short: shoot them down with arrows first, then finish them with melee once they’re on the ground. Make sure you’re stocked up on arrows before arriving.
If you’ve completed the Crowcaller quest, that sword’s homing projectile ability is excellent here. It auto-tracks the flying wizards and saves you a lot of arrows.
Pack plenty of healing food before starting. The enemy count here is higher than it looks from the entrance, and there’s a batch of archers on the upper walls that deal serious damage if ignored.
Once the bar hits 0%, the Sanctum is liberated and the puzzle can begin.

Step 2 — Grab the Fusion Reactor Core
Head down the stairway near the Sanctum entrance. At the bottom of the stairs, you’ll find the Fusion Reactor Core — a large cube sitting in an open slot.
You have two ways to carry it:
- Kuku Pot (recommended): Interact with the Core and select “Seal” to lock it inside your Kuku Pot. This lets you carry it hands-free and move around normally. You need the Kuku Pot from Chapter 4 for this. Check our guide on how to craft the Kuku Pack and Kuku Rocket Pack if you’re missing it.
- Axiom Force: Grab it manually and drag it with you. This works but is slower and more awkward for navigating the Sanctum.
Store the Core and hold onto it. You’ll need it in the final step.

Step 3 — Burn the Vines Behind the Core Slot (Secret Chest)
Once you remove the Fusion Reactor Core from its slot, look at the wall behind where the Core was sitting. It’s completely covered in vines. These vines can’t be cut with standard attacks. You need Blinding Flash to burn them.
Use Blinding Flash on the vine wall to clear it. This reveals a small hidden passageway.
Go inside. There’s a chest at the back of the room. Open it to collect the Odeck’s Protector Plate Boots, which have an HP regeneration Core built in. This is one of the better early defensive items in Hernand, and most players walk right past it. Don’t miss it.
Step 4 — Burn the Vines on the Main Wall and Reach the Roof
Return to the main area of the Sanctum — the large open space with the central machine and four pillars. Look at the wall to the right of the machine. It’s covered in another thick layer of vines.
Use Blinding Flash again to burn them away. This exposes handholds and scaffolding on the wall. Climb up the wall using the newly cleared path.
At the top, you’ll find the roof of the locked room below. There’s a third patch of vines on the roof itself. Burn them with Blinding Flash one more time. This clears a hole in the ceiling.
Drop through the hole to enter the locked room.

Step 5 — Collect the Fusion Reactor
Inside the locked room, you’ll find the Fusion Reactor — a large cylindrical component sitting in a pile of rubble.
Use Axiom Force to grab it, or seal it in your Kuku Pot if you have room. You now have both parts needed to complete the puzzle. Head back out to the main Sanctum area.
Step 6 — Install the Fusion Reactor on the Broken Pillar
Look at the four pillars surrounding the central machine. One pillar is missing its top component — there’s a visible gap where the Fusion Reactor should sit. This is always the pillar to the left of the main machine as you face it.
Carry the Fusion Reactor over to the broken pillar and place it on top using Axiom Force. Once it’s positioned, climb the pillar and perform an Aerial Force Palm — jump from the top of the pillar and press Force Palm while in the air to drive the Reactor piece down into the socket.
If the component doesn’t snap in on the first attempt, pick it back up and try again. Use your controller triggers (or mouse rotation on PC) to rotate the piece with Axiom Force until the grooves line up correctly, then do the Aerial Force Palm. This is the step most players get stuck on.
Step 7 — Insert the Fusion Reactor Core Into the Machine
The final step. Go to the main central machine and find the square-shaped slot on its face — the one that’s empty. If you have the Fusion Reactor Core in your Kuku Pot, discard it out of the pot to place it near the machine. Position it directly in front of the slot.
Use Force Palm to punch the Core block straight into the slot.
You’ll hear the machine power up. A short cutscene plays showing Elowen appearing and acknowledging the cleansed Sanctum. The Sanctum of Temperance is now complete.
Rewards For Completing the Sanctum of Temperance
After the cutscene with Elowen, you receive two crafting blueprints:
- Kuku Lightning Spear Blueprint — A powerful mid-game spear with lightning-based attacks. One of the strongest weapons available in Hernand at this point in the story.
- Kuku Bird Boltspitter Blueprint — A ranged Kuku weapon that fires bolts. Useful for dealing with flying enemies and distant targets.
Both blueprints are learned automatically. You can craft either weapon at any Smithy in Hernand once you have the required materials.
Common Problems and Fixes
Puzzle interaction is greyed out or unavailable.
At least one enemy is still alive in the Sanctum perimeter. Check the upper walls and rooftops for remaining archers or wizards. The combat UI can sometimes fail to register that enemies are gone — try moving around the full area.
Fusion Reactor won’t snap into the pillar.
Rotate the piece using your triggers (controller) or mouse wheel (PC) while holding it with Axiom Force. The grooves need to face the correct direction. Once aligned, the Aerial Force Palm will lock it in.
Vines aren’t burning.
Make sure you’re using Blinding Flash, not a standard light attack. Regular melee does nothing to Abyss Vines. Blinding Flash is the specific ability needed. Read our guide on how to use Blinding Flash if you’re unsure how to activate it.
Can’t find the locked room after climbing.
Once you’ve burned the vines on the main wall and climbed up, look for vines on the roof surface itself. There are three separate vine patches total: one behind the Core slot, one on the wall, and one on the roof. You need to burn all three to access every area.
Kuku Pot is full and can’t store the pieces.
Discard or use any items currently inside the Kuku Pot to free up space. Both puzzle pieces can be placed in the world temporarily — they won’t disappear if you stay in the Sanctum area. If you leave the area and a piece vanishes, check the Lost Item bin at your base camp. Recovery costs 10 silver.
Other Elowen Sanctums In Hernand
Completing the Sanctum of Temperance is just the first of four sanctums Elowen asks you to cleanse. Here are the others:
- Sanctum of Absolution — North of Pororin Forest, past the steel ruins near Hernand’s northern road. Contains a boss fight: Antumbra’s Sword.
- Sanctum of Benediction — Located northeast of Hernand City in the highland area near Spire of Insight. Reward: Kuku Marni Laser Helm Blueprint.
- Sanctum of Penitence — Southeast of Goldleaf Tradepost, past the Sanctum of Temperance. The simplest of the four — only one Fusion Reactor Core to find. Reward: Kuku Pack Blueprint.
Complete all four and return to Elowen’s house north of The Witchwoods to finish her questline and earn your Witch’s Token.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do this Sanctum before Chapter 5?
No. The puzzle elements stay completely inactive until you’ve unlocked Elowen and started her quest in Chapter 5.
Do I need the Kuku Pot for this puzzle?
No, but it makes the puzzle far easier. Without it, you must drag the Fusion Reactor Core manually with Axiom Force across the Sanctum, which is slow and awkward. The Kuku Pot lets you carry it hands-free.
Can I miss the hidden chest in this Sanctum?
Yes, easily. The secret room behind the vine wall below the stairs is easy to miss. Once you burn the vines behind the Core slot, look for the passageway and check the chest before moving on.
Does the Sanctum reset if I leave mid-puzzle?
Cleared enemies don’t respawn. Correctly placed puzzle components stay in position. If a loose component disappears after you leave, recover it from the Lost Item bin at base camp for 10 silver.
What are the blueprints used for?
Both blueprints unlock new craftable Kuku weapons at any Smithy. The Kuku Lightning Spear is a strong mid-range melee weapon. The Kuku Bird Boltspitter is useful for ranged and aerial combat.
