The Destiny 2 Floor is Lava challenge is a hidden Tower minigame that unlocks the Who Needs Floors Anyways Triumph added in Monument of Triumph in 2026. You interact with a small object near an air vent, the floor turns lethal, and you have to reach a glowing beacon without touching the ground. It sounds simple. The two things that trip players up are finding the starting object and not knowing where the beacon can spawn.
- The challenge starts on the upper level of the Tower Courtyard — interact with the “Don’t Pick Me Up” object near an air vent
- After activating it, a glowing beacon appears somewhere in the Courtyard — that’s your target
- The beacon can spawn in one of three locations — check all three if you can’t find it
- Touching the floor or taking damage fails the attempt and resets the challenge
- The metal catwalk grating where the air vent is located is safe to stand on — it doesn’t count as floor
- If you get a difficult beacon position, jump off the Tower to reset and try for a better spawn
- Completing it unlocks the Triumph and grants the Quickness buff — increased jump height and speed in the Tower
Where to Find the Floor is Lava Starting Object
Spawn into the Tower and go to the Courtyard. Face the Postmaster. Head up the stairs on the left to reach the upper level of the Courtyard.
From the top of those stairs, turn left. You’ll see an air vent system with metal catwalk grating above it. Walk out onto the grating. Look for a small object — fuel cells and scattered parts — sitting in the middle of the walkway. Approach it and you’ll see the interaction prompt: “Don’t Pick Me Up.”
Interact with it anyway. That immediately activates the Floor is Lava challenge. A red glow surrounds your Guardian and the debuff “The Floor is Lava” appears on your screen. The metal grating you’re standing on is safe. The ground below is not. Don’t step off the catwalk until you’ve spotted the beacon.
Where the Beacon Can Spawn — All Three Locations
Once activated, a glowing blue-white beam of light appears somewhere in the Tower Courtyard. This is your target. The beacon spawns randomly in one of three locations on the opposite side of the Courtyard from where you started:
- Location 1: Between Tess Everis (Eververse) and Commander Zavala — on the upper balcony level
- Location 2: Between Commander Zavala and Lord Shaxx — on the connecting walkway
- Location 3: Where Lord Saladin stands during Iron Banner — the upper balcony near the Iron Banner circle
Scan all three spots from the starting catwalk before moving. The beacon is a bright column of light and easy to spot once you know where to look. If you start moving before identifying it, you risk taking a wrong route and running out of safe surfaces.
If you get a difficult beacon position: intentionally jump off the Tower. This resets the challenge. Interact with the “Don’t Pick Me Up” object again and a new beacon location will roll. Some beacon positions are much easier to reach than others depending on your class. Rerolling is a legitimate strategy.
How to Reach the Beacon Without Touching the Floor
The Triumph description specifies “without touching designated forbidden platforms or ground areas.” The floor is the main hazard, but pay attention — some low ledges and platforms near the ground level also count as forbidden and will fail the attempt.

Stick to railings, upper balconies, decorative ledges, and elevated walkways. The Tower has more surfaces than most players use during normal play. Look up. There are pipes, ledges, and railing tops that give you a continuous elevated path across the Courtyard.
The general route across the Courtyard follows the upper balcony level the whole way. Avoid dropping down to the main floor at any point. If you’re navigating a corner with no obvious path, look for a railing edge you can walk along or a decoration you can hop onto.

When you reach the beacon, walk into it. The challenge completes instantly. You don’t need to jump or do anything special — just reach it.
Best Class for the Destiny 2 Floor is Lava Challenge
Your class matters for this challenge. Each jump type handles differently on the Tower’s narrow surfaces.
Warlock (Glide): The easiest class for this challenge. Glide gives you sustained air control between platforms. You can course-correct mid-air if you start to drift toward the floor. Strongly recommended if you’re struggling.
Hunter (Double Jump): Good. The second jump gives you a recovery option if you misjudge a gap. Reliable for most beacon locations.
Titan (Lift): Workable but harder. Lift gives you a burst of upward movement without as much horizontal control. Short gaps are fine but longer traversal sections require more precision.
Your class ability doesn’t reset during the challenge, but your jump ability does function normally. Use it freely.

What Happens If You Fail
Touching the floor or any forbidden surface instantly ends the attempt. The red glow disappears and the debuff clears. The challenge does not automatically restart. Walk back to the air vent on the upper catwalk and interact with the “Don’t Pick Me Up” object again to start a fresh attempt.
A new beacon will roll each time you restart. If the previous beacon position was difficult, a reset often gives you an easier one.
Who Needs Floors Anyways Triumph — Reward
Completing the Floor is Lava challenge unlocks the Who Needs Floors Anyways Triumph and rewards 10 Legendary Marks. After completing it, open your Journey page and manually claim the Triumph — the Marks don’t drop automatically.
Spend Legendary Marks at the Monument of Guardian Tenets in the Tower Courtyard. The four Tenet vendors sell armor sets, Sparrows, Skimmers, ships, Ghost shells, shaders, and Exotic engrams.
The Quickness Buff — What It Does and How Long It Lasts
After reaching the beacon, your Guardian gains the Quickness buff. This applies a blue glow and significantly increases your jump height and movement speed while in the Tower.
Quickness opens up parts of the Tower that are normally impossible to reach with standard jump height. After completing the challenge, use the buff to explore. There are areas above and behind the Courtyard that players almost never see during normal play.
The buff expires if you:
- Fast travel to any other destination
- Die in the Tower
- Leave the Tower zone
You can repeat the challenge with the Quickness buff active to make it easier on subsequent runs — the extra jump height helps clear difficult gaps. You can also just run it again to refresh the buff whenever it expires.
Destiny 2 Floor is Lava — Tips Summary
Identify the beacon before moving. Don’t leave the starting catwalk until you’ve spotted which of the three locations it spawned in. Moving blind wastes time and costs you safe ground.
Reroll bad beacons. Jump off the Tower intentionally if you get a location that doesn’t suit your class or jump type. A quick reroll is faster than struggling through a bad route.
Warlock glide is the easiest option. If you have multiple characters, use your Warlock for this. The mid-air control is the most forgiving for Tower platforming.
The metal grating is your safe zone. You start on it and can return to it if you need a moment to re-plan your route. Standing there doesn’t fail the challenge.
Claim the Triumph manually. Open your Journey page after completing it. The 10 Legendary Marks won’t appear until you claim them from the Triumph entry.
