In gameplay terms, having a Weapon of Sorrow equipped is the gating requirement for the Oblation: Bloodline Exotic Mission on the Moon. The Hive runes throughout the mission and its unlock sequence won’t appear without one in your loadout. Any of the four counts.
If you already own Cull’s Shadow from the Oblation mission, it also qualifies as a Weapon of Sorrow for future runs — so getting through the mission once removes the requirement for repeat attempts.

If you just need one Weapon of Sorrow quickly, get them in this order:

How to Get Thorn — Easiest Weapon of Sorrow
Thorn is a Void Hand Cannon and the most straightforward Weapon of Sorrow to obtain. No raids. No campaign. No RNG.
Go to the Tower. Find the Monument to Lost Lights — the golden Exotic kiosk near the Vault. Open the Light and Dark Saga tab, then navigate to the Forsaken Exotics section. Thorn is listed there.
Cost: 1 Exotic Cipher and 125,000 Glimmer.

Thorn’s corruption perk deals damage over time on hit. Stacking poison on multiple targets makes it strong in both PvP and sustained PvE encounters. It’s not just a mission-unlock tool — it’s a genuinely useful weapon.
How to Get Osteo Striga — Craftable Weapon of Sorrow
Osteo Striga is a Kinetic Submachine Gun that fires toxic projectiles, with a perk that poisons targets on final blows and with full magazines. It’s craftable, which means the acquisition is deterministic once you unlock it.
Requirements: The Witch Queen expansion.
Step 1: Complete the full Witch Queen campaign on any character. This unlocks the Enclave on Mars and the Relic crafting system.
Step 2: Go to the Relic at the Enclave. Select the Shape option. Navigate to the Submachine Gun tab. Osteo Striga will appear there as a craftable option.
Step 3: Craft it using the required materials at the Enclave. Once shaped, it’s yours permanently and can be re-crafted or enhanced at the Relic like any other craftable weapon.
The acquisition is fully guaranteed. No raid needed, no RNG drop. The only gate is owning The Witch Queen and completing its campaign, which is a reasonable ask given it’s one of the best campaigns in the game’s history.
How to Get Necrochasm — Bottomless Pit Quest Guide
Necrochasm is a Kinetic Auto Rifle from the Crota’s End raid. Precision kills trigger Cursed Thrall explosions that chain to nearby enemies. It’s a PvE powerhouse, especially against Hive-dense content.
Unlike Touch of Malice, Necrochasm has a guaranteed quest path. You don’t need to rely on RNG — just complete the Bottomless Pit quest.
Step 1: Complete Crota’s End
Run the Crota’s End raid from the Moon destination. Complete it fully. After defeating Crota, interact with his sword relic in the boss arena — this serves as the raid vendor. Claim the Bottomless Pit Exotic quest from it. You’ll also receive the Husk of the Pit, a Common-rarity proto-version of Necrochasm.
If you misplace the Husk of the Pit, you can repurchase it from Collections at any time.
Step 2: Get 100 Hive Kills with Husk of the Pit
Equip the Husk of the Pit and kill 100 Hive enemies. Kills inside Crota’s End count faster than patrol kills. The Altar of Sorrow activity on the Moon is a solid alternative if you don’t want to run the full raid again for this step.
Step 3: Level Up to Eidolon Ally
Continuing to use the Husk of the Pit and completing Crota’s End encounters upgrades it to the Eidolon Ally. Keep running raid encounters while using the weapon. Progress accumulates across multiple runs.
Step 4: Collect Essence of the Oversoul
You need 20 Essence of the Oversoul to complete the quest and get Necrochasm. A further 35 Essence unlocks the Necrochasm catalyst in the same quest. Essence drops from Crota’s End encounters, with higher drop rates from the Ir Yût and Crota final encounters.
There is a small chance Crota drops all the Essence needed in one full run. Don’t count on it — plan for multiple clears across several weeks.
Step 5: Claim Necrochasm
Return to the sword relic vendor in the Crota boss arena with the completed quest objectives. Hand it in and claim Necrochasm. The catalyst unlocks alongside it once you have 35 Essence total — the catalyst adds the Outlaw perk, which significantly improves its reload speed on precision kills.
How to Get Touch of Malice — King’s Fall Final Encounter
Touch of Malice is a Kinetic Scout Rifle that draws on the power of Oryx, the Taken King. Its defining perk burns through your own health to power up the final rounds in each magazine. It’s dramatic and effective — a weapon built around sacrifice.
It’s also the hardest Weapon of Sorrow to get. There is no guaranteed quest path. It drops as an RNG reward from defeating Oryx at the final encounter of the King’s Fall raid.
How to farm it:
- Run King’s Fall raid from the Moon destination
- Complete all encounters to reach Oryx, the Taken King — the final boss
- Defeat Oryx. Touch of Malice has a chance to drop from the completion chest
- Each character gets one loot drop per week from the final encounter
- Three characters means three weekly attempts at the drop
The drop rate for raid Exotics is roughly 5% per completion. Expect multiple weeks of farming before it appears. King’s Fall is a six-player raid — you need a full fireteam. Learning the mechanics thoroughly makes each attempt faster and wastes fewer attempts to failed runs.

Weapons of Sorrow Perks and What Makes Them Different
Each Weapon of Sorrow has a corruption-based mechanic that sets it apart from standard Exotics:
- Thorn: Mark of the Devourer — rounds pierce targets and deal damage over time. Kills with a poisoned target restore health.
- Osteo Striga: Toxic Overload — sustained fire poisons targets. Full-magazine final blows trigger a burst of toxin that spreads to nearby enemies.
- Necrochasm: Cursebringer — precision kills trigger Cursed Thrall explosions, chaining damage to nearby targets.
- Touch of Malice: Touch of Malice perk — the final rounds in the magazine consume the wielder’s health to deal bonus damage, with kills restoring health to the magazine.
Which Weapon of Sorrow Should You Get First
If your only goal is unlocking the Oblation: Bloodline mission to get Cull’s Shadow, get Thorn. It takes five minutes and costs one Exotic Cipher. You’ll be on the Moon running the Oblation unlock sequence before most players finish their first Crota’s End attempt.
