Halo Campaign Evolved Food Critic is the game’s only secret achievement. The official description reads: “Listen to the Thirsty Grunt talk about his eating habits.” That is it. Find one specific Grunt tucked away in a side tunnel during the final mission, let him finish his speech, and the trophy pops on its own. The tricky part is that the Grunt is hidden during the Warthog escape sequence of The Maw — one of the fastest, most chaotic sections in the whole game. Most players speed right past him without ever knowing he was there.
This guide tells you exactly where he is and how to get there fast.
Minor spoiler warning: This achievement takes place in The Maw, the final mission of the main campaign. The guide below references events near the end of the game.
TL;DR — Food Critic at a Glance
- Mission: The Maw — Rally Point Charlie
- Difficulty: Any. Easy is recommended for a stress-free run.
- What to do: During the Warthog escape, watch the right-hand wall in the main tunnel after Foehammer crashes.
- Location: Around 740 meters from the objective, an open side tunnel appears on the right. Drive in, get out, head right.
- Trigger: Approach the Thirsty Grunt. The achievement unlocks the moment he starts talking. Do not shoot him.
- Reward: Food Critic — Bronze / 10G
- This is the only secret achievement in Halo Campaign Evolved.
- The Thirsty Grunt is a returning Easter egg from the original Halo: Combat Evolved (2001), kept in the same location in the remake.

What Is the Food Critic Achievement?
Food Critic is a hidden achievement built around one of the most beloved Easter eggs in Halo history. The Thirsty Grunt is a lone Covenant Grunt who appears during the final mission, tucked into a dead-end side passage while the entire Pillar of Autumn collapses around him. He is not hostile. He does not attack you. He is just standing there, very thirsty, very opinionated about food, and completely unbothered by the apocalypse happening around him.
The Easter egg dates back to the original Halo: Combat Evolved released in 2001. It is one of the most recognised hidden moments in the series’ history. Halo Campaign Evolved brings it back in the same location, and for the first time, finding him earns you a trophy and achievement — the Food Critic.
It is the only secret achievement in the entire game. Every other achievement is visible in the list from the start. This one stays hidden until you unlock it, which is exactly what makes it a fitting reward for tracking down one of Halo’s most famous secrets.
Food Critic is worth 10 Gamerscore on Xbox and is a Bronze trophy on PS5 and Steam.
Before You Start — What You Need to Know
- The Maw must be unlocked. You need to have reached or completed The Maw at some point before you can load into it via Rally Point select. If you are mid-playthrough and have not reached this mission yet, you will need to get there naturally first.
- Use Rally Point Charlie. This drops you directly into the Warthog escape sequence, right before the relevant section. You do not need to replay the entire mission.
- Do not shoot the Grunt. He is not an enemy encounter. Walking up to him is all it takes. Shooting him before the dialogue starts will end the opportunity.
- You do not need to finish the mission afterward. Once Food Critic unlocks, you can quit to the menu. The achievement saves immediately.
- Any difficulty works. Easy is recommended because the Warthog run has Flood and other threats, and you do not want to die before reaching the tunnel.
Where Is the Thirsty Grunt — Exact Location
The Thirsty Grunt is found during The Maw, the tenth and final mission of the main campaign. He is hidden in a side tunnel on the right-hand wall of the main escape route, during the Warthog run through the burning corridors of the Pillar of Autumn.
The marker to watch for: you will see the side tunnel opening at approximately 740 meters from the objective on your HUD. It is easy to drive straight past it because at full speed it appears and disappears in a second. Slow down as you approach this distance so you have time to spot and enter it.
Once inside the side tunnel, get out of the Warthog and head to the right. The Thirsty Grunt is in there mid-monologue. Walk up to him and let him speak.
How to Get the Food Critic Achievement — Step by Step
Step 1: Load The Maw at Rally Point Charlie
From the main menu, go to Campaign → New Game → Easy → The Maw → Rally Point Charlie.
Rally Point Charlie starts you directly at the Warthog run section. You will not have to fight through the earlier parts of the mission. This is by far the fastest way to reach the Thirsty Grunt and is the approach every guide recommends.
Step 2: Drive Through the Warthog Run Until Foehammer Crashes
Once you load in, you will be driving the Warthog through the collapsing Pillar of Autumn. Follow the objective marker and keep moving.
You will reach a point where Foehammer’s Pelican dropship crashes onto the bridge ahead of you. This is a key story beat and a visual landmark you cannot miss. After this moment, the Pelican extraction is gone and you need to continue driving toward a new exit.
This is your cue to start watching the right-hand wall carefully.
Step 3: Enter the Hangar and Watch the Right Wall
After Foehammer crashes, follow the objective into the hangar and drive into the main escape tunnel. The tunnel has Flood enemies and exploding hazards along the sides — keep moving but do not go at full speed.
Watch the right-hand wall as you drive. You are looking for an open side tunnel cut into the wall. It does not have a marker. It does not get highlighted. It is just there, and it is easy to blow past.
The side tunnel appears at roughly 740 meters from the objective on your HUD. A useful secondary landmark: it is the second accessible doorway on the right side of the tunnel. The first one you pass leads to a dead end. The second one has the Grunt.
There will also be fire-covered corridor sections and Flood presence nearby — just outside the tunnel entrance you may see exploding Flood enemies. That area marks roughly where the turn-in is.
Step 4: Get Out of the Warthog and Head Right
Once you spot the side tunnel, drive in and stop. Get out of the Warthog on foot.
Head to the right side of the side tunnel. The Thirsty Grunt is standing there.
Step 5: Approach the Grunt and Let Him Speak
Walk up to the Thirsty Grunt. Do not shoot him, melee him, or throw a grenade near him. Just approach him calmly.
He will begin talking about his eating habits and his thirst. The moment his dialogue starts, Food Critic unlocks automatically. You do not need to wait for him to finish. You do not need to interact with a prompt. Just being close enough for him to start speaking is all it takes.
Once the achievement pops, you are done. Quit to the menu or keep playing — it is up to you.
What Does the Thirsty Grunt Say?
The Thirsty Grunt complains about being thirsty and discusses food with the kind of cheerful obliviousness that makes the Easter egg so memorable. The ship is falling apart, fires are burning through the corridors, the Flood is loose, and this particular Grunt’s main concern is what he wants to eat and drink.
It is the same spirit of dialogue the Easter egg has always had in the Halo series — completely self-contained, funny in its deadpan delivery, and genuinely charming in a game full of high-stakes combat. The remake keeps the Grunt in the same location as the original and preserves what made the Easter egg work in the first place.
Why Is This Achievement Easy to Miss?
The Maw’s Warthog run is one of the most intense sequences in the game. The whole level is designed to make you move fast. The ship is on a countdown. Enemies are attacking from the sides. Flood are running across your path. Everything is on fire.
In that context, a quiet side tunnel with a non-hostile Grunt hiding in it is about the last thing most players are looking for. The game gives you zero hints that it is there. No waypoint, no audio cue, no objective update. If you do not know to slow down and look right at the 740-meter mark, you will drive past it without a second thought every single time.
That is why Rally Point Charlie is so useful. It lets you load in specifically for this, with no countdown pressure, no story urgency — just a focused run to find the Grunt and grab the achievement.

Other Secret and Challenge Achievements
If you are working through all of the game’s challenge trophies, here is another one worth knowing about:
- This Is My Ship Now — Eliminate Captain Keyes and trap his six Marines in the observation pen. Unlocked during The Pillar of Autumn at Rally Point Bravo.
For the complete list of every achievement and trophy in the game, see the achievement and trophy list guide.
Grab the Maw Collectibles While You Are Here
Since you are loading into The Maw anyway, it is worth grabbing the mission’s three Skulls and Terminal at the same time if you have not already. All four collectibles in The Maw count toward the No Rush trophy and the overall Collector’s Addition Gold trophy.
