Knowing how to activate Skulls in Halo Campaign Evolved is the first step to actually using them. Finding a Skull is not enough. You have to go through the right menu before starting a mission to turn the modifier on. This guide walks you through exactly how to do that, what each step looks like, and what unlocks when you collect more Skulls.
TL;DR — How to Activate Skulls
- Skulls are not active automatically when found. You must turn them on before launching a mission.
- Go to Main Menu → Campaign → New Game → Pick Difficulty → Pick Mission & Rally Point → Select Skulls → Apply & Start.
- You cannot activate or change Skulls from the pause menu mid-mission.
- Using Continue loads your last save without the Skull selection screen. Always use New Game to set Skulls.
- Collect any 3 Skulls to unlock Campaign Remix and automatically receive 3 bonus Skulls: Adaptation, Armistice, and Reload.
- Activating Skulls does not block trophies or achievements. You can earn them freely with Skulls on.
What Are Skulls in Halo Campaign Evolved?
Skulls are hidden collectibles scattered throughout all 13 missions. Each one unlocks a gameplay modifier you can turn on before starting a level. Some make the game harder. Some make it funnier. A few make it easier.
There are 42 Skulls in total. You need to physically collect 39 of them — three are hidden in every mission. The other 3 unlock automatically once you trigger Campaign Remix by collecting any three.
Skulls first appeared in Halo 2 as Easter eggs. They became one of the series’ most loved features and return here in full force, with 26 returning fan favourites and 16 brand new ones built specifically for this game.
For the full breakdown of every Skull and where to find each one, check the all Skull locations and effects guide. And if you want to know which missions still have Skulls left to find, the all missions list is a good reference.
How to Activate Skulls — Step by Step
Finding a Skull just unlocks it. It does not automatically apply it to your game. You have to select it through the menu before launching a session. Here is exactly how.
Step 1: Open the Main Menu and Select Campaign

From the main menu, select Campaign. This takes you to the campaign start screen.
Step 2: Choose New Game — Not Continue
This is the most important step. You must choose New Game, not Continue. Selecting Continue just resumes your existing save and skips the Skull selection screen entirely. You will not get the option to turn Skulls on or off from Continue.
Step 3: Select Your Difficulty
Pick the difficulty you want to play on. You can activate Skulls on any difficulty.
Step 4: Select a Mission and Rally Point
Choose which mission you want to play and which Rally Point (checkpoint) to start from. You can only select missions and checkpoints you have already unlocked.
Step 5: Enable Skulls on the Select Skulls Screen
After picking your Rally Point, the game opens the Select Skulls screen. This shows all the Skulls you have collected. Toggle on whichever ones you want active. You can combine as many as you like.
You will also see options for Spore Visibility and Night Vision here, and a Remix Selection button that randomly picks three to six Skulls from your collection for a more chaotic run.
Step 6: Press Apply & Start

Once you have selected your Skulls, press Apply & Start. The mission will launch with your chosen modifiers active from the first second.
The full menu path is: Campaign → New Game → Difficulty → Mission → Rally Point → Select Skulls → Apply & Start.
Can You Change Skulls Mid-Mission?
No. Once a mission starts, you cannot add, remove, or swap Skulls from the pause menu. If you want a different combination, you need to quit and start a new session through the New Game menu again.
This also means starting a new session will override your current solo campaign save. However, it does not delete your unlocked missions or Rally Points. You can always jump back into any section of the game you have already reached.
Do Skulls Block Trophies or Achievements?
No. Activating Skulls in Halo Campaign Evolved does not prevent you from earning trophies or achievements. You can play with any modifier active and still unlock progression rewards normally.
The one exception is that collectible trophies still require you to physically find every Skull and Terminal yourself. Turning a Skull on does not count as collecting it. You still need to go to its location in the mission and pick it up.
For a breakdown of every trophy and how to unlock them, see the achievement and trophy list guide.
How Campaign Remix Unlocks
Campaign Remix is a new mode that opens up once you collect any 3 Skulls anywhere in the game — mission order does not matter.
When it unlocks, three bonus Skulls are automatically added to your collection:
- Adaptation — Randomises the enemy factions present in the mission.
- Armistice — Enemy factions will not fight each other, only you.
- Reload — Randomises all pre-placed weapon pickups in the mission.
These three are always active in Campaign Remix and cannot be turned off within that mode. They are part of what makes Remix feel like a fresh run each time.
In Campaign Remix, you can also add more Skulls manually on top of the base three. Use the Remix Selection button on the Select Skulls screen to have the game randomly pick extras for you, or choose them yourself.
This brings the total Skull count to 42 once unlocked — 39 you find yourself, and these 3 awarded automatically.
How to Find Skulls — Audio Cue Tip
Skulls do not appear on the map or get marked with waypoints. You have to find them yourself. There is one useful audio hint though: as you get physically close to a Skull’s location in a mission, a faint whispering or hissing sound starts playing. It gets louder the closer you are.
That sound is your cue to start looking around. Check every corner, platform, and out-of-the-way area nearby.
Skulls also save at the next checkpoint — not instantly when picked up. If you grab one and quit to the main menu before a checkpoint triggers, it will not register. Keep playing for a few moments until a checkpoint saves.
Useful Skulls to Activate During Collectible Hunting
Not every Skull makes the game harder. Some are actually helpful, especially when you are trying to find collectibles across the missions. Here are a few worth turning on:
- Grunt Birthday Party — Does not affect difficulty at all. Makes headshots on Grunts trigger a confetti explosion. A fan favourite that adds nothing harmful. Found in the Heavy Burden bonus mission.
- Efficient — Gives more ammo from fallen enemies when your health is full. Makes resource management easier during longer collection runs. Also found in Heavy Burden.
- Bandana — Grants unlimited ammo. Useful for aggressive playthroughs where you do not want to worry about resources while searching for Skulls.
Combining helpful Skulls lets you move faster through levels without getting bogged down in combat. Particularly useful when replaying missions specifically to clean up missed collectibles via Rally Point select.
What Is LASO and How Does It Connect to Skulls?
LASO stands for Legendary All Skulls On. It is the hardest way to play the game — every challenge modifier is turned on at once while you play on Legendary difficulty. Enemies hit harder, resources are scarce, and checkpoints become very limited.
You need to collect all 39 Skulls to unlock LASO mode. Once you do, completing the entire campaign on LASO earns you the MYTHIC trophy/achievement — the rarest and most demanding unlock in the game.
LASO is not something to rush into. Play through on a lower difficulty first to learn the missions, then come back once you are confident in the encounters.
For help with the difficulty differences and what changes between each setting, see the difficulty differences guide.
Do Skulls Work in Co-Op?
Yes. Skulls work in both solo play and co-op. The modifiers apply for everyone in the session. You still select Skulls through the same New Game menu before launching a mission.
Halo Campaign Evolved supports two-player split-screen co-op on consoles and four-player online co-op across all platforms. For more on multiplayer options, see the co-op players guide.
