- Moving to Pailune relocates your entire Greymane Camp from Howling Hill to Kliff’s hometown.
- You cannot move until you finish the main story, all Scattered Embers quests, and fully upgrade Howling Hill.
- The move is triggered by the Return Home quest — talk to Serkis in Hernand Town, then return to Howling Hill.
- Moving is completely optional. You can ignore the quest and keep Howling Hill forever.
- Benefits include 1,000 Private Storage slots, a new Abyss Nexus fast travel point, and double the farm and ranch space.
- Before moving, harvest all crops, cancel comrade missions, and clear every camp module — items inside buildings may not transfer.
- After the move, picking up silver boxes and loose items at Howling Hill counts as theft. You are no longer the owner.
Moving to Pailune in Crimson Desert is the final chapter of the Greymane Camp story. It relocates your base from Howling Hill in Hernand to Kliff’s rebuilt hometown. The move has meaningful benefits but also real tradeoffs, and it requires a specific set of prerequisites that are easy to miss. This guide covers every requirement, the exact steps to trigger the move in 2026, what to do beforehand, and whether it is actually worth doing.
Requirements to Move to Pailune in Crimson Desert
The option to move camp does not appear until you meet all three of the following requirements. Completing them in any order is fine, but all three must be done before the quest appears.
1. Complete the Main Story Including the Epilogue
You must finish every main story quest through Chapter 12 and the full Epilogue. The Epilogue consists of eight dialogue quests where you speak with each faction you met during the story. The Pailune move quest will not unlock until those are complete. See our full main story quest list if you need to check your progress.

2. Complete All Scattered Embers and Grounds of the Sunrise Greymane Faction Quests
You need to complete the full Scattered Embers questline and all Grounds of the Sunrise Greymane Faction Quests. In practice this means at least 31 Scattered Embers quests, 37 Grounds of the Sunrise quests, and 27 Greymane Commission quests completed.
The final Scattered Embers quest unlocks only after Oongka is removed from your character wheel, which happens once all other Scattered Embers quests are done. After that, find Oongka near Calphade Castle, southwest of Pailune City, and complete his quest. This unlocks the final Grounds of the Sunrise quest called Homeward, which leads directly into the Return Home move sequence.
If you are short on Greymane quests, walk around your camp and speak to every NPC. Some quests only appear after you recruit specific comrades. Keep recruiting until the right ones appear. A small number of quests may be bugged or unavailable — that is generally fine as long as your totals are close to the numbers above. For help with camp quests, see our Homestead quest guide and Howling Hill expansion mission guide.

3. Fully Rebuild Pailune and Upgrade Howling Hill
You must have completely rebuilt Pailune — including the Pailune Council and the Pailune Trading Post — using camp resources. You must also have fully upgraded the Howling Hill camp through every expansion tier. These two tasks overlap heavily with the Grounds of the Sunrise quests, so if you have done all the faction quests you are likely most of the way there already. See our guide on how to upgrade your camp if any tiers are incomplete.
How to Trigger the Return Home Quest and Move to Pailune
Once all three requirements are met, follow these steps exactly. Make a manual save before you speak to Serkis. The autosave gets overwritten by the relocation cutscene and cannot be used to roll back. Only a manual save lets you return to this point if something goes wrong. Learn how to make a manual save if you are unsure.
- Find Serkis in Hernand Town, near Hernand Castle. Accept The Return Home quest from him.
- After speaking to Serkis, return to Howling Hill and step into the central area of your camp.
- A cutscene triggers. The camp begins relocating to Pailune.
- After the cutscene, your camp fast travel point moves from Howling Hill to a Pailune-side residence.
The Howling Hill fast travel point and the surrounding exploration area remain accessible for gathering. Only the camp facilities themselves are removed from Howling Hill. The buildings and bridge at Howling Hill disappear after the move.
Pre-Move Checklist — Do These Before Talking to Serkis
Several items and resources may not transfer correctly if you skip these steps. Do all of them before accepting The Return Home quest.
- Harvest all crops. Crops at the farm do not carry over to Pailune. Anything unharvested is lost. Check every planted slot before you leave.
- Cancel all active comrade dispatch missions. Wait for every Greymane to return to Howling Hill before triggering the move. Comrades on active missions may scatter or reset after the relocation cutscene.
- Clear every camp building of its contents. The smithy, alchemy table, hunter’s chest, craftsman’s workbench — each module has its own storage. Open each one individually and remove everything inside. Upgraded buildings are treated as standalone containers by the game engine. If you leave items inside an upgraded module and the building is demolished, those items may not move with you.
- Strip your comrades of equipped gear. Some companions have been known to reset to their starter loadout after the move in earlier patches. Although largely fixed as of 2026, removing their gear first removes any risk.
- Take a screenshot of your Private Storage chest contents before the cutscene. If anything goes missing, Pearl Abyss support can restore rare items using server logs — but proof speeds up the process significantly.
Note on furniture: As of Patch 1.04.02, furniture placed through Housing and Farming mode at Howling Hill persists across the move. You no longer need to manually retrieve and re-place furniture before relocating. Items are automatically re-stocked in the new Pailune house. You may want to rearrange them to fit the new layout, but nothing is lost.

What Changes After You Move to Pailune
Benefits of Moving to Pailune
- Private Storage expands to 1,000 slots — an increase of 360 slots over Howling Hill. The Private Storage chest is placed inside your new house via Housing and Farming mode after the move. See our guide on increasing inventory space for other storage tips.
- New Abyss Nexus fast travel point — a fast travel point appears inside the Pailune camp, directly next to your house. It is one of the more convenient camp-side fast travel placements in the game. To activate the Broken Abyss Nexus behind Kamu’s shed near the farm, you need an Abyss Transporter stored in your Kuku Pot. One can be found beneath Muckroot Ranch south of Hernand Town.
- Double farm and ranch space — the Pailune farm and ranch zones are roughly twice the area of Howling Hill’s. More crop slots and more livestock capacity without giving up other camp facilities.
- Spacious Pailunese House layout — the largest house interior available in the game, unlocked in the Select House picker after the move. It supports all storage containers added in the Patch 1.04.00 update.
- Access to Pailune town merchants — Greymane comrades spread across the northwest part of Pailune with vendor icons on the map. Pailune’s existing town shops are also accessible alongside the Greymane stalls, including the Back Alley Shop.
- Completes the Greymane storyline — sending the Greymanes home closes out the faction narrative. For completionists this is the proper ending to the camp arc.
Drawbacks of Moving to Pailune
- Camp facilities spread across a city — vendors, the dispatch manager, and your Private Storage are no longer clustered in one small area. You will need to learn new locations for everything. Some players find this frustrating; others adapt quickly.
- Howling Hill items become theft — after the move, Kliff is no longer the owner of Howling Hill. Silver boxes, decorative weapons, and any loose items around the old camp that you could previously pick up freely now count as stealing. You will gain a bounty if you take them. See our bounty removal guide if this happens by accident.
- Wagon trading is less convenient — Howling Hill sits next to the Goldleaf Camp with easy road access to Demeniss and Delesyia for trade routes. Pailune is further from those routes. If you rely heavily on wagon trading for Silver income, this is a real downside. See our trade goods guide for the full trading breakdown.
- Some rebuilt Pailune structures cannot be interacted with — the Institute of Pailune and the Trading Post you spent resources rebuilding have no usable NPCs inside them. The buildings look complete but are currently decorative only.
Should You Move to Pailune in Crimson Desert
Moving is genuinely worth it if you play the post-game and use your camp regularly. The 1,000-slot Private Storage alone is a significant quality-of-life upgrade over Howling Hill’s capacity. The doubled farm and ranch space and the new fast travel point add real convenience for long-term play.
If you are primarily a wagon trader or you are mid-game and just want to visit Pailune, do not move yet. The requirements lock the move to post-game anyway, so there is no rushing it. And if you have finished everything and simply prefer Howling Hill’s compact layout, you can ignore The Return Home quest entirely. The move is optional. Nothing in the game forces you to do it.
