LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight – How to Unlock All Playable Characters

Here is every playable character in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, when you unlock them, and what abilities and gadgets each one brings to Gotham.

  • There are 7 playable characters in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight at launch.
  • All characters unlock through story progression — no grinding or side missions needed.
  • Batman and Jim Gordon are available from the start; the rest unlock across Chapters 1 through 5.
  • Each character has a unique gadget set and skill tree for combat and puzzle-solving.
  • Joker and Harley Quinn are coming as DLC characters in the Mayhem Collection (September 2026).
  • Batman cannot be removed from your active party in the open world.

One of the biggest changes in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is the roster. Past LEGO games let you unlock hundreds of characters. This one takes a different approach. You get 7 deeply built heroes, each with their own gadgets, skill trees, and combos. It feels more like a proper Batman team game than a character collector.

Every single character unlocks through the main story. Play through the chapters and you will naturally build your full team by Chapter 5. No side quests, no secret requirements. Below is the complete breakdown of every playable character, when they unlock, and what they bring to the fight.

You can find the game on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the PlayStation Store. Check the official Warner Bros. Games page for more details on the Deluxe Edition and DLC.

Batman (Bruce Wayne) – Prologue / Chapter 1

Batman is your starting character and he never leaves your party. You play as Bruce Wayne during the Prologue, but the Batsuit and all the gadgets that come with it arrive at the start of Chapter 1. He is always locked into the Player 1 slot, so you cannot swap him out in the open world.

Batman has the biggest gadget selection in the game. His core tools are the Batarang and the Batclaw. The Batarang can stun or distract enemies at range, while the Batclaw pulls enemies in for a combo. As you progress through the story, he unlocks X-ray and UV vision for detective work, plus an Explosive Gel that can blow through destructible walls. He also has the most suits to wear. Check out our complete suits guide for the full list.

Key Gadgets:

  • Batarang – stuns and distracts enemies
  • Batclaw – grapple hook and close-range pull
  • Explosive Gel – destroys marked walls and objects
  • X-ray and UV Vision – unlocked through story progression

Jim Gordon – Chapter 1

Jim Gordon unlocks at the very start of Chapter 1, as soon as Bruce puts on the cowl for the first time. He works as the default Player 2 companion throughout Chapter 1’s entire adventure. Gordon starts as a detective and rises to commissioner as the story progresses.

His gadget style is very different from Batman’s. The Foam Sprayer is his most useful tool — it can gunk up pipes, freeze cogs, and stop machinery in place. His Rebound Launcher fires a bouncing projectile that can hit targets from around corners. Gordon also unlocks the ability to investigate missing posters in the open world, though any character can complete those activities once they are available.

Key Gadgets:

  • Foam Sprayer – blocks pipes and stops active machinery
  • Rebound Launcher – bouncing projectile for tricky angles

Catwoman (Selina Kyle) – Chapter 2

Catwoman joins the team early in Chapter 2 during the Mimes mission, after Batman tracks the Penguin to the zoo. Her entry into the story is hard to miss — she makes an impression immediately by stealing Jim Gordon’s Batclaw. You cannot unlock her before this point, so just follow the main story and she will join naturally.

Catwoman has the most unique movement in the whole roster. She can crawl up walls, cut through glass, and crack safes via a small minigame where you rotate the dial carefully to find the pin. Her biggest ability is Call Kitty, which lets her summon and control a small LEGO cat. That cat can squeeze through tight vents, distract guards with a well-placed meow, and reach areas the rest of the team simply cannot get to.

Key Gadgets:

  • Whip – rotates LEGO screws and bricks, useful in combat and puzzles
  • Call Kitty – summons a controllable cat for stealth and tight spaces
  • Wall Climbing – passive ability, no gadget required
  • Glass Cutter – cuts through certain windows
  • Safe Cracking – interactive minigame ability

Robin (Dick Grayson) – Chapter 3

Robin unlocks in Chapter 3 when Batman visits Haley’s Circus. Dick Grayson does not have his Robin costume right away — you see him as a civilian first — but after a training montage, the Dynamic Duo is officially formed. His unlock is automatic, so just follow the story.

Robin plays somewhat similarly to Batman but with his own distinct tools. His Birdarang works like the Batarang but can hit multiple targets in a single throw. His Cable Launcher is a standout — it creates a walkable tightrope between two points, which is extremely useful for crossing gaps and linking puzzle elements. In combat, the Cable Launcher can also stun and knock down enemies effectively. Robin is one of the stronger all-round characters for both combat and exploration.

Key Gadgets:

  • Birdarang – multi-target throwable, similar to the Batarang
  • Cable Launcher – creates tightropes and links puzzle nodes

Batgirl (Barbara Gordon) – Chapter 4

Batgirl becomes playable in Chapter 4 during the Batgirl Begins mission. Chapter 4 is the most generous chapter for unlocks — both Batgirl and Nightwing join the roster here. Batgirl brings a more technical and hacking-focused kit compared to the rest of the team.

Her signature tool is the Hackarang — a modified Batarang that can hack into electronic targets at range. She also has a Drone that she can deploy to reach high or distant areas and solve puzzles that no other character can access. If you are stuck on a tech-themed puzzle later in the game, Batgirl is usually the answer. Her skill tree is entirely focused on hacking and technical abilities.

Key Gadgets:

  • Hackarang – hacks electronic doors, panels, and targets
  • Drone – reaches distant or elevated areas for puzzle-solving

Nightwing (Dick Grayson) – Chapter 4

Nightwing unlocks at the end of Chapter 4, essentially as the older and more experienced version of Robin. Importantly, Robin does not get replaced. Both stay on your roster, and Nightwing can perform any interaction that Robin can. Think of him as Robin with a zappy upgrade.

His kit mirrors Robin’s almost exactly, but everything is electrified. The Electrorang can fry multiple enemies in one throw. The Electric Cable Launcher works like Robin’s version but can also reroute power, connecting devices to electrical sources to solve puzzles. His bow staff carries an electric charge too, letting him power up generators in the environment. He is the go-to character for anything electrical in the back half of the game.

Key Gadgets:

  • Electrorang – electrified throwable, hits multiple enemies
  • Electric Cable Launcher – creates tightropes and reroutes power
  • Electrified Bow Staff – powers generators in the environment

Talia al Ghul – Chapter 5

Talia al Ghul is the last character to join your roster, unlocking in Chapter 5. She actually appears much earlier — she is playable briefly in the Prologue during training with the League of Shadows, and shows up as a non-playable NPC in certain missions throughout the story. But full, permanent unlock only happens in Chapter 5.

Talia is the most unique character in the game. Her kit is stealth-focused in a way that stands completely apart from the rest of the Bat-family. Her Blowdarts are ranged sleep darts that knock enemies unconscious without killing them, which is great for clearing rooms quietly. Her Ninja Dash is a short-range teleport — she can slip through broken doors, cover gaps other characters cannot cross, and close distance on enemies in an instant. Her skill tree focuses on stealth, agility, and distant control.

Key Gadgets:

  • Blowdarts – ranged sleep darts, incapacitate enemies silently
  • Ninja Dash – short teleport, bypasses gaps and broken doors

DLC Characters – Joker and Harley Quinn (September 2026)

Two more playable characters are on the way as part of the Mayhem Collection DLC, which launches in September 2026. The Mayhem Collection adds Joker and Harley Quinn as fully playable characters, along with a new story mission where they break out of Arkham Asylum and cause chaos through Gotham City. A new Chaos Mode is also included. The Mayhem Collection is included with the Deluxe Edition of the game, or available as a separate purchase.

Shared Abilities — What Every Character Can Do

While each character has their own unique tools, all seven share a set of core abilities. Every character can glide, grapple to certain traversal points, attack in basic combat, and interact with standard LEGO build puzzles. This means you are never completely stuck just because your preferred character is not available for a particular section.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Roster

  • Do not ignore Jim Gordon. His Foam Sprayer unlocks a lot of puzzle solutions in Chapter 1 that you might walk right past. It is worth experimenting with him early.
  • Use Catwoman’s Call Kitty in every area you revisit. A lot of vents and hidden collectible spots are only reachable with the cat. Read our Carmine Falcone collectibles guide to see how useful she gets in Chapter 1 alone.
  • Upgrade WayneTech Caches early. Each character has their own skill tree, and WayneTech points speed up upgrades significantly. Our infinite studs guide can also help you farm the studs needed for upgrades.
  • Switch to Nightwing for electrical puzzles. Once he unlocks in Chapter 4, he becomes the best character for anything involving power rerouting or generators.
  • Use Talia for revisiting older areas. Her Ninja Dash can reach spots that were previously inaccessible. Go back through earlier chapters once she is unlocked and look for new paths.
  • Play co-op to use more gadgets at once. Since Batman is always Player 1, having a friend take the second slot means you always have a full gadget set active. See our co-op guide to get started.

Can You Replay Missions with Unlocked Characters?

Yes. Once a character is unlocked, you can bring them back into any mission you have already completed. This is important for collectible hunters, since some collectibles require gadgets you did not have on your first run. Head to the Batcomputer in the Batcave to replay any mission at any time. Learn more in our mission replay guide.

Wrapping Up

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight makes a smart call by going small and deep with its roster. Seven well-designed characters with real differences beat a hundred samey ones any day. Each unlock feels like a meaningful addition to your team, not just a number ticking up.

By the time Talia joins in Chapter 5, you have a full Bat-family with tools for every situation Gotham can throw at you. And with Joker and Harley Quinn arriving in September 2026, the roster is only going to get more interesting.
