Who Is Thoma in Genshin Impact?

Thoma is a 4-star Pyro character who wields a Polearm. He was added in Genshin Impact Version 2.2 and is one of the most beloved supporting characters in the game’s story. Originally from Mondstadt, he came to Inazuma years ago and eventually rose to become the housekeeper and chief retainer of the Kamisato Clan, one of the three great commissions that govern the island nation.

In combat, Thoma is primarily a support character. He provides his team with a stackable Pyro shield called the Blazing Barrier, and his Elemental Burst generates continuous Pyro pulses tied to the active character’s Normal Attacks. This off-field Pyro application makes him a key piece in both Vaporize teams and — since the addition of Dendro — Burgeon reaction teams. Thoma Skills and Abilities

Normal Attack: Swiftshatter Spear

Thoma performs up to 4 consecutive polearm strikes. His Charged Attack consumes Stamina to lunge forward and deal damage. His Plunging Attack drops from mid-air for AoE damage on landing. His Normal Attack is rarely leveled or used directly, as his value comes almost entirely from his Elemental Skill and Burst.

Elemental Skill: Blazing Blessing

Thoma vaults forward with his polearm and delivers a fire-infused kick that deals AoE Pyro damage. The moment this skill is cast, it also applies Pyro to Thoma himself and summons a Blazing Barrier — the core of his entire kit.

The Blazing Barrier absorbs damage for the active character. Its absorption capacity scales directly with Thoma’s Max HP. Crucially, if a new Blazing Barrier is obtained while one already exists, the remaining absorption from the old barrier is added to the new one, stacking up to a maximum cap (also based on Thoma’s HP). The barrier also absorbs Pyro damage 250% more effectively than other elements, making it particularly durable in Pyro-heavy environments.

Elemental Burst: Crimson Ooyoroi

Thoma unleashes a wave of Pyro damage and then enters a state called Scorching Ooyoroi. For the next 15 seconds, every time the active character performs a Normal Attack, a Fiery Collapse triggers — dealing AoE Pyro damage near the enemy and generating a new Blazing Barrier for the active character.

This is what makes Thoma useful in Vaporize and Burgeon teams. His burst pulses Pyro off-field every time the main DPS does a Normal Attack, applying Pyro consistently without Thoma needing to stay on the field. In Burgeon teams, this Pyro triggers Burgeon reactions from Dendro Cores (created by Hydro + Dendro), dealing large AoE Dendro damage. In Vaporize or other Pyro reaction teams, it provides sustained off-field Pyro upkeep for reaction chains.

Passive Talents

• A1 – Imbricated Armor: When the active character obtains or refreshes a Blazing Barrier, their Shield Strength increases by 5% for 6 seconds. This stacks up to 5 times, for a maximum of 25% Shield Strength bonus. This passive rewards you for keeping Thoma’s burst active and refreshing shields regularly.
• A4 – Flaming Assault: The Fiery Collapses from Crimson Ooyoroi deal additional damage equal to 2.2% of Thoma’s Max HP. This makes stacking HP valuable even in damage-focused builds, as it directly improves the burst’s Pyro pulses. More HP = stronger shields and slightly stronger Fiery Collapse hits.
• Utility Passive – Snap and Swing: Successful fishing attempts in Inazuma have a 20% chance of catching double the fish. Excellent if you fish frequently for weapon refinements or cuisine.

Thoma Constellations

Thoma’s constellations focus on improving his shield uptime and burst energy management. Here is what each one does:

• C1 – A Comrade’s Duty: When a character protected by Thoma’s Blazing Barrier is attacked, Thoma’s Elemental Skill cooldown is decreased by 3 seconds and his Elemental Burst cooldown is also decreased by 3 seconds. Triggers once every 20 seconds. This helps with his shield refresh rate in fights where the team is taking regular hits.
• C2 – A Subordinate’s Skills: Crimson Ooyoroi’s duration is extended by 3 seconds, from 15 to 18 seconds. More time for off-field Pyro pulses each rotation, which directly improves his value in all teams.
• C3 – Fortified Resolve: Increases the level of Blazing Blessing (Elemental Skill) by 3, up to Level 15. Stronger shield absorption per cast.
• C4 – Long-Term Planning: After using Crimson Ooyoroi, 15 Energy is immediately restored to Thoma. This is his most impactful constellation. Thoma has notoriously high Energy Recharge requirements, and C4 significantly reduces the ER you need to build on artifacts and weapons — making him much easier to maintain in rotation and freeing up stats for more HP or EM.
• C5 – Raging Blazes: Increases the level of Crimson Ooyoroi (Elemental Burst) by 3, up to Level 15. More burst damage and stronger Fiery Collapse hits.
• C6 – Burning Heart: When a Blazing Barrier is obtained or refreshed, all party members’ Normal, Charged, and Plunging Attack damage is increased by 15% for 6 seconds. This is a strong team buff that applies to virtually every DPS in the game, making Thoma noticeably more valuable in teams centered on Normal Attacks (such as Hu Tao or Ayato teams).

Recommended constellation target: C4 is the most important upgrade. It makes Thoma dramatically easier to build and maintain. C6 is excellent but optional — its 15% Normal Attack buff is genuinely strong in the right teams.

Best Weapons for Burgeon Build

• Kitain Cross Spear (4-star, Craftable): This is Thoma’s best weapon in Burgeon teams. It has an Elemental Mastery substat, and its passive restores 3 Energy every 10 seconds while also reducing the Elemental Burst’s Energy cost by 3. This Energy passive directly addresses Thoma’s biggest weakness — his high burst ER requirement — while also boosting the EM he needs for Burgeon damage. The fact that it is craftable makes it especially accessible.
• A Thousand Floating Dreams (5-star): Elemental Mastery substat with a team EM buff passive. Works in any reaction-heavy Thoma build but is overkill for most players since Kitain Cross Spear performs similarly in Burgeon contexts.

Best Weapons for Shielder/Support Build

• Favonius Lance (4-star): Energy Recharge substat and a passive that generates Energy particles on CRIT hits. One of the best weapons for addressing Thoma’s ER problem in shielder builds. Requires some CRIT Rate on your artifacts to proc the passive reliably, but the Energy generation from this weapon can be felt by the whole team.
• Engulfing Lightning (5-star): Energy Recharge substat with a massive ER passive that converts excess ER into ATK. The best 5-star option for maximizing Thoma’s burst uptime while keeping HP reasonable.
• Dialogues of the Desert Sages (4-star): HP% substat that makes it excellent for purely maximizing Thoma’s shield strength. Note that the Energy passive on this weapon does not benefit Thoma directly, but the HP it provides significantly increases both shield absorption and Fiery Collapse hits via the A4 passive.
• Black Tassel (3-star): HP% substat. The best free-to-play option for pure shield strength. Easy to max out refinement since it is a 3-star weapon, making it surprisingly competitive in shielder builds where HP is the priority.

Best Artifacts for Thoma in Genshin Impact

Best Set for Burgeon Teams: 4-Piece Flower of Paradise Lost

This is Thoma’s top artifact set when he acts as the Burgeon trigger. The 2-piece gives 80 Elemental Mastery. The 4-piece increases Bloom, Hyperbloom, and Burgeon reaction damage by 40%, and stacks an additional EM bonus (up to 4 stacks of 25 EM each) whenever those reactions are triggered. Since Thoma triggers Burgeon consistently through his burst pulses, the 4-piece stacks fill quickly and stay active throughout his window. This set directly increases the damage of every Burgeon explosion he causes.

Alternative for Burgeon: 4-Piece Gilded Dreams

If you cannot farm good Flower of Paradise Lost pieces, 4-piece Gilded Dreams is a strong alternative. It gives EM from the 2-piece and further EM bonuses based on the team’s elemental composition. In typical Burgeon teams with Hydro and Dendro teammates, Gilded Dreams provides a solid EM boost that is only slightly behind Paradise Lost. Check whichever set has better substats.

Best Set for Shielder Build: Mixed Sets

For pure shielder Thoma focused on maximum shield absorption and burst uptime, a mixed set works best:

• 2-piece Emblem of Severed Fate + 2-piece Tenacity of the Millelith: Gives 20% Energy Recharge from Emblem and 20% HP from Tenacity. This combination is the most practical — it directly addresses Thoma’s two most important stats simultaneously without locking you into a specific domain grind.
• 4-piece Noblesse Oblige: If no other character on the team is using Noblesse, 4-piece Thoma buffs the entire team’s ATK by 20% for 12 seconds after using his burst. This turns Thoma into a genuine team buffer, though it sacrifices his personal shield strength.
• 4-piece Tenacity of the Millelith: When Thoma’s Fiery Collapses (from his burst) hit enemies, they trigger the 4-piece bonus — granting all party members 20% ATK and 30% Shield Strength for 3 seconds. This can proc consistently through the burst window, making it a useful all-round support artifact.

How Much Energy Recharge Does Thoma Need?

This is Thoma’s most critical building challenge. His Elemental Burst costs 80 Energy and has a 20-second cooldown. In most teams without Bennett’s Pyro Resonance or energy battery support, Thoma needs 200% or more Energy Recharge to keep his burst available every rotation. This is a very high requirement.

The ways to reduce this are:

• Getting Thoma to C4 — restores 15 Energy immediately after using the burst, cutting ER needs to around 160–180%
• Using Favonius Lance — generates extra Energy particles when it procs on CRIT hits
• Using Kitain Cross Spear — passively reduces burst Energy cost by 3 and regenerates 3 Energy every 10 seconds
• Running Bennett as a second Pyro — Pyro particles from Bennett and Pyro Resonance help recharge Thoma’s burst faster

Best Teams for Thoma in Genshin Impact

Best Team: Burgeon Team (SS Tier)

• Kamisato Ayato or Yelan – On-field or off-field Hydro for Bloom Core generation

This is Thoma’s strongest team. Nahida and Hydro characters (Ayato, Yelan, Xingqiu, or Kokomi) generate Dendro Cores constantly through the Bloom reaction. When Thoma’s Elemental Burst fires a Fiery Collapse and touches a Dendro Core, it triggers Burgeon — an AoE Dendro explosion that deals heavy damage based on Elemental Mastery. Hu Tao Vaporize Team (SS Tier)

• Hu Tao – On-field Pyro Main DPS
• Xingqiu – Off-field Hydro for Vaporize reactions
• Kaedehara Kazuha – Grouping, Anemo resistance shred, Elemental DMG buff
• Thoma – Shield support to protect Hu Tao’s low-HP window

This is one of Thoma’s most popular teams. Hu Tao deals maximum damage when she stays below 50% HP, but being at low HP makes her extremely vulnerable to dying. Thoma’s Blazing Barrier gives her the protection to stay aggressive without risk, while his off-field Pyro pulses also help keep Pyro on enemies for Hu Tao’s Vaporize reactions. Wanderer Support Team

• Wanderer – On-field Anemo Main DPS in Windfavored state
• Faruzan – Anemo resistance shredder and CRIT DMG buffer
• Bennett – ATK buff and healing
• Thoma – Pyro shield to prevent Wanderer from being knocked out of his hover state

Thoma is a natural fit as the shielder in Wanderer’s team. Wanderer is highly vulnerable to interruption while hovering, and Thoma’s Blazing Barrier prevents that. In addition, when Thoma’s burst fires Pyro pulses and Wanderer absorbs Pyro via his Jade-Claimed Flower passive, Wanderer gains a 30% ATK boost. In teams without Bennett, Thoma slots in as the Pyro unit to provide Pyro Resonance, which raises the whole party’s ATK by 25%. While the Blazing Barrier at lower HP investment is weaker than a fully-built Zhongli shield, Thoma’s Pyro application does not interfere with Superconduct (Cryo + Electro) the way an Electro or Cryo unit would. Gem Type

• Agnidus Agate (Sliver, Fragment, Chunk, and Gemstone) – The Pyro gem. Drops from the Pyro Hypostasis (on Kannazuka in Inazuma), Pyro Regisvine, Primo Geovishap, and Pyro-related weekly bosses. Can also be crafted using Dust of Azoth at the Alchemy Bench.

Boss Drop

• Smoldering Pearl – Dropped by the Pyro Hypostasis field boss, also known as Ayin, located on Kannazuka in Inazuma. Spend 40 Original Resin per run to collect these. You need 46 total to fully ascend Thoma.

Local Specialty

• Fluorescent Fungus (168 total needed) – A glowing fungus found exclusively on Tsurumi Island in Inazuma. Thoma is currently the only character who uses this material. To access Tsurumi Island properly, you must first complete the Aranyaka World Quest series, which lifts the fog that obscures the island. Once unlocked, Fluorescent Fungus grows throughout the island’s forests and near water. Use the interactive Teyvat map to mark all spawns and farm efficiently across multiple days.

Ascension Stat

Thoma gains ATK% as his ascension stat, reaching 24% bonus ATK at full Level 90 ascension. While this is useful, Thoma’s primary stats are HP% (for shield strength) and ER or EM (for his burst and reactions), so the ATK bonus from ascension is a secondary benefit rather than a core build focus.

Thoma Talent Materials

To level up Thoma’s talents, you will need:

• Transience Talent Books: Teachings, Guide, and Philosophies of Transience — farmed from the Violet Court Domain in Inazuma, available on Mondays and Thursdays
• Treasure Hoarder Insignias (all three tiers) — enemy drops
• Hellfire Butterfly — weekly boss material from the Signora Trounce Domain (Narukami Island: Tenshukaku)
• Crown of Insight — required to max a talent to Level 10

Talent Priority

• Elemental Skill first — Blazing Blessing is leveled first to maximize shield absorption strength, which scales with HP and with the talent level simultaneously.
• Elemental Burst second — Crimson Ooyoroi is leveled second to increase both the burst’s initial hit damage and the strength of each Fiery Collapse pulse. In Burgeon builds especially, leveling the burst increases Pyro application frequency and DMG.
• Normal Attack last — Thoma’s Normal Attacks are not part of his support rotation and deal negligible damage. Do not level this talent unless you have fully maxed the other two.

Thoma Playstyle Tips

• Rotate quickly when using Thoma. His field time should be minimal. Swap to Thoma, use Elemental Skill, use Elemental Burst, then immediately swap back to your main DPS. The burst’s Fiery Collapse will continue triggering off-field as long as your active character does Normal Attacks.
• Your active character must do Normal Attacks. The Fiery Collapse and the shield refresh from Crimson Ooyoroi only trigger when the on-field character performs Normal Attacks. Characters who rely on Charged Attacks (like Yanfei or Hu Tao in her Charged Attack mode) benefit less from the burst’s refresh mechanic. In those cases, Thoma still provides the initial shield from his skill, but the shield uptime during the burst is reduced.
• Stack HP before EM in shielder builds. In non-Burgeon teams, HP is the priority stat. A shield that is too weak is useless. Hit your ER breakpoint first (around 200% without C4, around 160–180% with C4), then stack HP%.
• In Burgeon teams, prioritize EM first. Each point of Elemental Mastery significantly increases the damage of Burgeon explosions. Aim for 800–1000+ EM in Burgeon Thoma builds. ER is still needed, but EM comes first in stat allocation.
• Refresh Thoma’s shield manually with his Elemental Skill mid-rotation. The Elemental Skill has a 15-second cooldown while the shield it creates lasts 8 seconds. There is a gap in shield coverage if you only use the skill once. Try to time a second skill cast during the burst window to refresh the shield manually for continuous protection.
• Pair with Bennett for easier ER management. A second Pyro character like Bennett in the team triggers Pyro Resonance, which generates Pyro particles faster and reduces the overall ER pressure on Thoma. Bennett also heals and provides ATK bonuses, making him a high-value partner in most Thoma teams.

Thoma Lore and Background

Thoma was born in Mondstadt but traveled to Inazuma as a young man, seeking adventure and opportunity. He was not a trained warrior or a trained diplomat — he was simply a man with good instincts, a warm personality, and an extraordinary ability to connect with people. Over time, those qualities led him to become the housekeeper of the Kamisato Clan, the most prestigious family in the Yashiro Commission.

His role as housekeeper is far more demanding than it sounds. Thoma manages the cooking, cleaning, gardening, correspondence, security, and daily operations of the entire estate. He also serves as the clan’s informal fixer — the person who calls in favors, smooths over complications, and gets things done quietly through his vast personal network. When there is no obvious path forward, Thoma finds one.

He is deeply loyal to both Kamisato Ayaka and Kamisato Ayato, viewing them less like employers and more like family. Having spent years stranded in Inazuma without a way back to Mondstadt, Thoma found his home and his people among the Kamisatos. He speaks of them with a protectiveness that goes far beyond professional duty.

How to Get Thoma

Thoma is a standard 4-star character available on the Wanderlust Invocation Standard Wish banner permanently. He also regularly appears as a featured rate-up 4-star on event banners — most recently featured alongside Raiden Shogun and Kinich’s reruns in Version 5.6 Phase 2. His appearance on event banners makes it relatively easy to gather his constellations over time through targeted pulling.

Is Thoma Worth Building?

Thoma has a very specific but genuinely useful niche. He is not a universal support the way Bennett or Kazuha are, and his high Energy Recharge requirement makes him more demanding to build correctly. But when he fits the team, he fits extremely well.

In Hu Tao teams especially, Thoma is one of the most recommended supports precisely because his shield lets Hu Tao stay in her low-HP damage window safely. He fills a role that few other characters can — a Pyro shielder who does not require field time and enables the main DPS to stay aggressive.

In Burgeon teams, he is an excellent and accessible Pyro trigger who also provides defensive support, which is harder to find. Characters like Nahida and Hydro units like Xingqiu make excellent teammates in that context.
