The Batmobile is one of Batman’s most iconic tools, and LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight wastes no time making it available. You do not have to wait until the middle of the game or grind through side content to get behind the wheel. The default Batmobile unlocks very early — right in Chapter 1 — and from that point on, Gotham’s streets are yours to tear through.
If you have just started the game and are wondering when the Batmobile shows up, or you want to know how it works and what upgrades it gets later, this guide covers everything.
The game is available on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the PlayStation Store. You can also visit the official Warner Bros. Games page for more details.
When Do You Unlock the Batmobile?
The Batmobile unlocks during Chapter 1, after you complete the Infiltration mission. Here is the exact sequence of events that leads to it.
The game begins with the Prologue, where you play as a young Bruce Wayne training with the League of Shadows. The Batmobile is not available here at all — you are still in Bruce Wayne mode, not Batman mode. Once the Prologue ends, Bruce returns to Wayne Manor and eventually discovers the Batcave.

From the Batcave, you progress into the early Chapter 1 missions. The Infiltration mission — one of the first proper Batman missions — is when things open up. As soon as that mission is complete, the Batmobile becomes available in the open world. You will be able to summon it and drive freely around Gotham’s streets from that point on.
If you are playing the Standard Edition and have not yet hit Chapter 2, keep pushing through Chapter 1. The Batcave Garage — where you can buy additional vehicles and swap which Batmobile you are driving — also opens up fully at the start of Chapter 2.
How to Summon the Batmobile
Once the Batmobile is unlocked, you do not need to find a garage or a specific spawn point to call it. Simply press Up on the D-Pad while out in Gotham’s open world and the Batmobile will appear almost anywhere you are standing. It is fast and feels very satisfying to use, especially when you are smashing through lamp posts and signs while collecting Studs along the way.
If the Batmobile gets stuck on awkward terrain or wedged against environmental objects, do not worry. You can quickly respawn it to get it back on track without losing your vehicle.

How to Drive the Batmobile – Controls
The Batmobile controls are straightforward and easy to pick up. Here are the key inputs to know.
- Left Stick – Steer the Batmobile in any direction.
- Accelerate / Reverse – Standard trigger controls for moving forward or back.
- Boost (Square on PlayStation / X on Xbox) – Activates a speed burst that moves you significantly faster. Be careful — steering becomes much harder while boosting, and it is very easy to launch yourself into street furniture at high speed.
- Rockets (Triangle on PlayStation / Y on Xbox) – Fire rockets when the game prompts it, to destroy targets or enemy vehicles.
- Respawn – If the Batmobile gets stuck, use the respawn option to reset its position.
One thing worth knowing early: the Boost button on the Batmobile shares a button with an on-foot action. Muscle memory from combat can catch you off guard and send you flying into a wall when you meant to do something else. Take a moment to get comfortable with the switch between on-foot and vehicle controls.
What Does the Batmobile Do in Gotham?
The Batmobile is primarily a traversal tool for Gotham’s open world. Gotham City is large, and while gliding and grappling are often faster for reaching rooftop collectibles and high-up locations, the Batmobile is perfect for covering ground-level distances quickly and efficiently.
While driving around, you can destroy lamp posts, signs, crates, boxes, and other LEGO environmental objects. Each one drops Studs, making Batmobile exploration a solid passive way to build your currency while getting from one place to another. If you want to make serious money fast, check out our Infinite Studs farming guide for the best methods.
The Batmobile also plays a role in specific story missions. The Chapter 5 Tumbler Chase is one of the most cinematic moments in the whole game and requires driving skills you will have already built up by that point from exploring Gotham in earlier chapters.
Batmobile Upgrades – What Unlocks Later
The base Batmobile is perfectly functional right from Chapter 1, but it gets even better as you progress through the story and invest in the skill tree. Several vehicle-specific upgrades become available either through story milestones or by spending Skill Bricks.
- Missiles – Lets you fire at enemy vehicles during chases and combat encounters.
- Hook Attack – Hooks enemies or objects and pulls them backward, useful in vehicle combat scenarios.
- Launch-into-Glide – Perhaps the most satisfying upgrade. This lets you launch yourself upward directly out of the Batmobile and transition straight into a gliding stance without having to stop, get out, and grapple up manually. It makes switching between driving and aerial traversal feel completely seamless.
These upgrades are worth saving Skill Bricks for, especially the launch-into-glide move. Once you have it, the gap between ground-level and rooftop movement basically disappears.
Is the Batmobile Good for Getting Around Gotham?
It depends on where you are going. For ground-level travel between districts, the Batmobile is fast and fun. But for most side activities, collectible hunting, and reaching crimes on top of buildings, gliding and grappling are usually faster. Gotham’s road layout means it is often quicker to travel as the crow flies — or as the bat glides — rather than navigating streets.
The sweet spot is using the Batmobile to move between areas when you know your destination is at street level, then switching to aerial traversal once you are close. Once you unlock the launch-into-glide upgrade, the transition between both becomes instant and the Batmobile becomes much more practical for everything.

- Highlight Batman from the character list.
- Press Triangle (Y on Xbox) to open his vehicle selection screen.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of the Batmobile
- Buy the Batman ’89 Batmobile immediately. At 1,000 Studs it costs almost nothing and gives you a classic look from your very first open-world session after Chapter 1.
- Smash everything while driving. Every LEGO object you destroy drops Studs. Treat every drive across Gotham as a passive farming run by ploughing through street furniture along the way.
- Complete AR Trials early for free vehicles. The Batpod at 4 trials and Batcycle at 8 trials cost zero Studs. Getting these frees up your money for the bigger purchases like the Batman ’66.
- Prioritise the launch-into-glide upgrade. It transforms how useful the Batmobile is for open-world exploration. Before it, you have to stop and manually grapple up to reach rooftops. After it, you launch directly into the air from the driver’s seat.
- Use the Batmobile for Stud farming routes. High-traffic streets with lots of destructible objects are great for quick Stud runs, especially combined with multiplier upgrades from Red Bricks. See our Infinite Studs guide for the most efficient routes.

Final Thoughts
The good news is you do not have to wait long at all. The Batmobile arrives in Chapter 1 right after the Infiltration mission, and from that point Gotham’s streets open up completely. It controls well, feels satisfying to drive, and only gets better as you unlock upgrades through the story and skill tree.
Start with the Batman ’89 Batmobile purchase as soon as you hit Chapter 2 — it costs next to nothing and is a great early unlock. Work through AR Trials for the free motorcycle unlocks, and save up for the Tumbler, which you earn automatically by completing Chapter 4. By the time you hit the back half of the game, you will have a solid garage of iconic Bat-vehicles to choose from.
