Who Is Yunli in Honkai Star Rail?

Yunli is a 5-star Physical character following the Path of Destruction in Honkai Star Rail. She debuted in Version 2.4 (August 2024) as the second dedicated counter-attack DPS in the game, following Clara. She is the granddaughter of General Huaiyan — a sword hunter from the Xianzhou Zhuming who was trained in swordsmanship and forging from a young age and became the second-youngest prodigy swordmaster of the Flamewheel Octet. Fuelled by an intense loathing for the cursed swords that emerged from the Zhuming, she vowed to hunt them all down.

In combat, Yunli wields a blade many times her own height with surprising brutality. Her entire playstyle is built around provoking enemies to attack her and then punishing those attacks with devastating counter-strikes. She is faster to ramp up and hits harder per counter than Clara, trading some of Clara’s consistency for a higher ceiling when perfectly set up.

As of patch 4.3, Yunli is rated T2 — still a strong and enjoyable Physical DPS who clears all endgame content, but slightly power-crept compared to the newest generation of DPS characters. Yunli Kit Overview – How Her Abilities Work

Yunli’s kit has two modes: her normal state where she deals solid but modest damage, and her Parry state during which every enemy attack triggers her devastating Intuit: Cull counter. The entire build philosophy revolves around maximising that Intuit: Cull counter window.

Basic Attack – Repelling Slash

Deals Physical DMG equal to 100% of Yunli’s ATK to a single target. Generates 20 Energy. Used when SP needs to be conserved or Energy generation is the priority. Despite its modest multiplier, Basic ATK contributes to the team’s attack count which can trigger support character passives (like Robin’s Additional Physical DMG) on every hit.

Skill – Bladeborn Quake

Deals Physical DMG equal to 200% of Yunli’s ATK to the primary target and 100% to adjacent enemies. Simultaneously restores HP equal to 30% of her ATK — making Yunli one of the rare DPS characters who heals herself through offensive actions. This Blast attack is her main source of proactive AoE damage and SP expenditure. The HP recovery on Skill is meaningful for survival, particularly in content where Yunli is taking regular hits from enemies she is taunting.

Ultimate – Earthbind, Etherbreak

Costs 120 Energy. The Ultimate does two things simultaneously:

Yunli enters Parry state, which lasts until the end of the next ally’s or enemy’s turn.
Yunli taunts all enemies — they are forced to target her while Parry is active.

While in Parry state:

When Yunli’s Talent triggers (i.e., an enemy attacks her), the counter automatically upgrades to Intuit: Cull instead of the normal Intuit: Slash.
Yunli’s next counter deals an additional +100% CRIT DMG on top of whatever CRIT DMG she has from relics and supports. This is why the ideal stat target is ~100% base CRIT DMG — the Ultimate doubles it to a combined 200% CRIT DMG for the peak counter hit.

If no enemy attacks during Parry state (rare but possible), Yunli automatically fires Intuit: Slash against a random enemy when the state ends — never entirely wasting the Ultimate. Intuit: Slash is the standard counter. Intuit: Cull is the enhanced version that additionally fires multiple instances of Physical DMG against random enemies. The damage difference between the two is significant — Intuit: Cull is approximately 2–3x the total damage of Intuit: Slash in most combat scenarios.

The Critical Timing Rule

The Parry state only lasts until the end of the next unit’s turn. This is the most important mechanical constraint to understand. If Yunli activates her Ultimate on her own turn, and the next turn belongs to an ally (not an enemy), Parry expires when that ally acts — before any enemy attacks. The result: Yunli fires the weaker Intuit: Slash instead of Intuit: Cull. Talent – Flashforge (Counter: Intuit)

Two important mechanics about the counter system:

Counter damage scales with the enemy’s SPD, not Yunli’s. Faster enemies hit harder via Yunli’s counter formula. Building SPD on Yunli does not increase her counter damage — only the enemy’s speed does. This is why SPD is useless on Yunli herself.
Counters are classified as Follow-Up Attacks. This means all FUA-specific buffs (Robin’s A4 CRIT DMG bonus, Duran’s stacking CRIT DMG, Aventurine’s Unnerved, etc.) apply to every counter.

Upon entering battle, increases the chance the wearer gets attacked by enemies. This is a taunt-adjacent passive that makes it significantly more likely for enemies to target Yunli instead of squishy teammates. Without this, enemy AI often ignores Yunli outside of Parry state, resulting in fewer natural counter triggers. With it, Yunli generates counters more organically throughout the fight.
After Yunli uses her Ultimate, she receives 1 stack of Firedance (up to 2 stacks). Each Firedance stack increases Follow-Up Attack DMG by 36% at S1 (up to 72% at 2 stacks). Best 4-Piece Relic Set: The Wind-Soaring Valorous

The best default relic set for Yunli in most compositions. The 2-piece provides 10% ATK. The 4-piece is the key: after launching a Follow-Up Attack, Yunli’s Ultimate DMG increases by 36% for the next Ultimate. Since every counter is a Follow-Up Attack, this 36% bonus is permanently active in active combat — she always counters before using her next Ultimate, so the 4-piece bonus never falls off. The combined ATK and Ultimate DMG makes this set straightforward to use and highly effective. Farm this set first.

Alternative: Poet of Mourning Collapse (4-Piece)

The 4-piece provides a massive 32% CRIT Rate when the wearer’s SPD is below 95. Yunli’s base SPD is 94 — she is literally built to have this bonus active permanently. With this set and an action advancer covering her SPD deficit, Yunli can run CRIT DMG on the Body main stat instead of CRIT Rate, pushing her base CRIT DMG higher. A strong alternative for builds that already have sufficient CRIT Rate from team buffs and want to maximize CRIT DMG output.

Alternative: The Ashblazing Grand Duke (4-Piece)

Stacks ATK% with each Follow-Up Attack trigger. In teams with many FUA sources (Topaz, Aventurine, Yunli’s own frequent counters), the stacks accumulate quickly and provide substantial ATK. Less consistent than Wind-Soaring Valorous in single-DPS hypercarry setups but stronger in FUA-heavy team compositions.

Best Planar Ornament: Inert Salsotto (Hypercarry)

Yunli’s best Planar Ornament for hypercarry builds. It provides 8% CRIT Rate and, when the wearer’s CRIT Rate exceeds 50% (easily met), increases both Ultimate DMG and Follow-Up Attack DMG by 15%. Since Yunli’s counters are Follow-Up Attacks and her Ultimate is the source of her most powerful counter, this double bonus applies to both her most important damage windows. The better Planar Ornament specifically for FUA-team compositions where multiple characters launch Follow-Up Attacks each cycle (Topaz, Aventurine, Robin’s Concerto). The ideal CRIT ratio for Yunli is approximately 100% CRIT Rate to 100% CRIT DMG from relics and builds. This looks understatted compared to other DPS characters, but during Intuit: Cull from her Ultimate, the +100% CRIT DMG bonus activates, pushing the effective ratio to 100% CRIT Rate / 200% CRIT DMG during her most important damage hit. Outside the Ultimate window, base counters from the Talent also fire, where the standard 100:100 ratio is very strong. The strongest current Yunli team. Robin provides ATK, CRIT DMG, and team-wide Action Advance during Concerto — every ally action triggers Robin’s Additional Physical DMG and feeds into the FUA CRIT DMG bonus. Critically, the team-wide Action Advance from Robin’s Ultimate means Yunli doesn’t need to build SPD at all; the team essentially acts for her. Sunday provides 100% direct Action Advance to Yunli specifically, plus CRIT DMG through The Beatified state and Energy restoration. Combined with Robin’s indirect advances, Yunli can act very frequently despite her low base SPD. Dan Heng • Permansor Terrae sustains through shields and ATK buffs without spending SP. The classic FUA team composition. Topaz marks an enemy with Proof of Debt (FUA damage increase) and fires Numby attacks constantly — each Numby hit both deals damage and triggers Yunli’s Talent counter (generating additional Yunli counters passively). Topaz’s frequent actions make the Duran Planar Ornament optimal here, reaching max stacks quickly. Aventurine provides shields and the Unnerved CRIT DMG debuff, plus his shield FUAs trigger additional Yunli counters. Robin‘s Concerto Action Advance and FUA buffs amplify both Yunli and Topaz simultaneously. This team excels in MoC multi-enemy content.

Energy-Focused Hypercarry: Yunli / Huohuo / Robin / Sunday

This triple-buffer setup leverages Huohuo‘s uniquely powerful Energy restoration for Yunli. Yunli has 240 Max Energy — the highest in the game. Huohuo’s Ultimate restores 20% of Max Energy to all allies, giving Yunli a staggering 48 Energy per cast (compared to 24 for most other DPS). This team is more accessible than the Robin + Sunday composition and performs reliably in all endgame content.

F2P Team: Yunli / Trailblazer (Remembrance) / Tingyun / Lynx

Trailblazer (Remembrance) provides Action Advance via Mem and CRIT buffs. Tingyun covers Energy and ATK. Lynx is Yunli’s best free sustain because she has a passive that increases the chance of Yunli being attacked — without the signature LC’s taunt passive, this is the best substitute for consistent aggro. Lynx’s tankiness and her character-specific taunt utility make her uniquely valuable in Yunli teams specifically.

Yunli Trace Priority

E2 – Best Value Eidolon (Recommended Stop Point)

E2 (First Luster Breaks Down) makes Yunli’s Counter attacks ignore 20% of the enemy’s DEF. DEF ignore is one of the rarest damage multiplier types and bypasses diminishing returns entirely — it stacks multiplicatively with CRIT stats, ATK%, and every other buff. Since Yunli fires counters constantly (every time an enemy hits her, plus Intuit: Cull during Parry), this 20% DEF ignore applies to every single counter throughout the fight. Community estimates put E2 at approximately 20–25% total DPS improvement from E0. This is the recommended stopping point for players invested in Yunli long-term.

E4 – Survivability Quality-of-Life

Increases Yunli’s Effect RES for a turn after launching her Ultimate’s Counter. Primarily a defensive upgrade that prevents CC disruptions during the Parry + Intuit: Cull sequence. Relevant against bosses with heavy debuff mechanics but not a priority for damage output.

E6 – Removes Timing Constraint

E6 allows Yunli to use Counter: Intuit Cull against any enemy using an ability, regardless of whether that ability targets her. It also increases CRIT Rate and Physical RES PEN of her Ultimate’s Counters. The ability-targeting removal is significant — it eliminates the frustrating situation where an enemy targets an ally instead of Yunli during Parry state, failing to trigger Intuit: Cull. Energy Building Phase

Use Skill on Yunli’s turns to deal Blast damage, restore HP, and accumulate Energy. Every time an enemy hits Yunli, the Talent fires a counter that generates additional Energy (10 per trigger). If using action advancers like Sunday who pushes Yunli immediately, ensure that after Sunday’s buff application, the next action belongs to an enemy rather than another ally. Coordinate turn order intentionally. At E0 without the signature LC, misplacing the Ultimate frequently results in Intuit: Slash instead of Intuit: Cull — significantly reducing damage output for that cycle.

Counter State Management

Between Ultimates, rely on the Talent’s standard counters for consistent Energy generation and passive damage. In Apocalyptic Shadow boss fights where the boss attacks frequently, Yunli can generate substantial Energy purely through counter triggers and sometimes fire her Ultimate twice per cycle. Prioritise keeping HP topped up — use Skill whenever HP drops toward the A4 trace’s 80% damage reduction threshold to avoid being burst down before Parry activates.

Should You Pull Yunli in HSR 4.3?

Yunli is T2 in patch 4.3 — she clears all endgame content and remains a genuinely strong Physical DPS with a uniquely satisfying counter-attack playstyle. The honest context: the current meta has moved toward higher-ceiling options like Phainon, Castorice, and Feixiao who push Yunli down the tier rankings. She is not the most optimal pull for players strictly chasing meta efficiency.

Where she absolutely excels: Apocalyptic Shadow, where enemies attack frequently and her natural counter triggers are near-constant. Against aggressive bosses and multi-attack enemies, Yunli’s playstyle reaches its natural peak without needing to engineer the Parry timing as carefully as in MoC. Players who enjoy reactive, counter-focused combat will find her deeply satisfying to pilot.

The key consideration is the signature Light Cone. Without Dance at Sunset’s passive aggro boost, enemies often ignore Yunli between Parry windows, reducing her counter frequency significantly. Without it, pairing her with Lynx (who provides a passive taunt for Yunli) is strongly recommended. With the signature, the taunt passive provides consistent aggro throughout the fight.
