- Pair with Ghost, Ninja, and Battle Hardened perks for the most aggressive SMG class.
The PPSh-41 has been a Call of Duty staple for years, and in Modern Warfare 4 it’s back and better than ever. Its in-game description sums it up well โ over 80 years of combat service, a best-in-class rate of fire, and a generous ammo capacity. It’s a weapon designed to overwhelm enemies at close range, and when you pair it with the right attachments, it does exactly that.
This guide covers the three best builds, the right class setup to run around them, and how to get the gun unlocked in the first place.
How to Unlock the PPSh-41 in MW4
The PPSh-41 unlocks at Player Rank 11. You’ll reach this just by playing the game naturally โ no challenges, no special conditions. Once unlocked, the gun has 54 weapon levels, so you’ll need to put time in before some of the key attachments open up. The 53 Round Mag is an early priority โ get to it as fast as you can since it appears in virtually every top build.

Best PPSh-41 Versatile Loadout in MW4
This is the go-to build if you want one setup that handles both tight corridors and slightly longer sightlines. It focuses on recoil control and ADS accuracy without gutting your handling speed.
- Barrel: Hanbit Chimmuk-INTR
- Optic: ZLR Type C
- Stock: Hanbit Janggun-H9
- Underbarrel: FSS Fireline Grip
- Laser: Schlager Visiv-5
The Hanbit Chimmuk-INTR is the backbone of this build. It gives you sound suppression built in, which saves you an attachment slot you’d otherwise burn on a muzzle. On top of that it improves damage range, vertical recoil control, and hip recoil โ a big deal on an SMG that you’ll often be firing on the move. The trade-off is a slight dip in ADS speed, but the Schlager Visiv-5 laser offsets that directly with sprint-to-fire and ADS speed gains.
The Hanbit Janggun-H9 stock handles horizontal and vertical recoil, keeping shots on target during longer bursts, while the FSS Fireline Grip locks down ADS recoil so tracking moving targets feels tighter. The ZLR Type C optic is a clean, minimal red dot that suits the gun’s close-to-mid-range role.
Best PPSh-41 Rush Loadout in MW4
If your playstyle is all-out aggression โ constant movement, pushing gunfights before the enemy is ready โ this build is built for you. It trades some recoil control for maximum speed and mobility.
- Barrel: TT Banseok-24N
- Underbarrel: Mire-50 Vertical Grip
- Magazine: 53 Round Mag
- Stock: Hanbit RDW7-F
- Laser: XRK Clutch-LS or Expedite Canted Laser
The TT Banseok-24N is a light barrel that boosts movement speed, ADS movement speed, horizontal recoil, and vertical recoil โ a well-rounded upgrade that keeps you quick on your feet. The Mire-50 Vertical Grip gives back some stability in the underbarrel slot.
The 53 Round Mag is the single most important attachment in the whole loadout. It gives you reload speed, sprint-to-fire speed, ADS speed, and movement speed all in one slot โ it is genuinely doing the work of two or three separate attachments. The Hanbit RDW7-F stock adds ADS speed on top of that, bringing final ADS time down to around 311ms which is acceptable for an SMG. If you don’t mind a visible laser, the Expedite Canted Laser instead of the XRK gives you even more movement and ADS speed.
Best PPSh-41 Recoil Control Loadout in MW4
This build is for players who want to push the PPSh-41’s effective range out further than typical SMG territory. Reliable out to around 30 metres, this setup reins in horizontal recoil hard so you can win gunfights where a pure rush build would struggle.
- Muzzle: Dual Port Horizontal Comp
- Barrel: Hanbit RDR-Tiger Heavy Barrel
- Underbarrel: FSS Fireline Angled Grip
- Magazine: 35 Round Mag
- Stock: Hanbit RDW7-F
The Dual Port Horizontal Comp is the key piece here โ it cuts horizontal recoil noticeably, making the PPSh-41 feel far more composed when engaging targets at distance. The Hanbit RDR-Tiger Heavy Barrel adds range and stability on top, while the FSS Fireline Angled Grip locks down ADS recoil further. The 35 Round Mag is used here instead of the 53 to compensate for the ADS speed lost elsewhere, keeping the build from feeling too sluggish.
This is the right choice on larger MW4 maps with longer sightlines. For a full breakdown of the maps you’ll be running this on, see our MW4 all multiplayer maps guide.
Best PPSh-41 Apex Attachment Loadout in MW4
If you’ve unlocked the PPSh-41 Ember Apex at weapon level 62, this build is worth trying. The Ember is an underbarrel launcher that fires a burst of pyrotechnic projectiles laying down incendiary area coverage โ strong for controlling tight spaces and objectives.
- Muzzle: FTAC Silent Recon
- Optic: ZLR Type C
- Stock: Hanbit Janggun-H9
- Laser: XRK Clutch-LS
- Apex: PPSh-41 Ember
Note that equipping the Ember locks out the barrel, underbarrel, and magazine slots โ the Apex is a fixed 53 Round Mag โ so the build compensates through the muzzle, stock, and laser slots. The FTAC Silent Recon muzzle handles suppression and recoil, the Janggun-H9 stock manages horizontal and vertical recoil, and the XRK Clutch-LS keeps ADS speed competitive. This is a viable rather than meta pick, but the Ember adds a fun dimension to objective play.

Best Class Setup for the PPSh-41 in MW4
Attachments are only part of the picture. Here’s what to run around the gun:
Perks
- Perk 1: Ghost โ keeps you off enemy UAVs while you flank
- Perk 2: Ninja โ quieter movement, which matters when you’re pushing aggressively
- Perk 3: Battle Hardened โ reduces the effect of enemy flash and stun grenades
Equipment
- Lethal: Semtex โ throw it on approach to force enemies off cover
- Tactical: Flash Grenade โ pairs naturally with an aggressive push playstyle
Secondary Weapon
Pair the PPSh-41 with a long-range AR or marksman rifle to cover the distances where an SMG loses. The Kastov 762 and the M4 are the two most recommended secondaries โ the M4 for a well-rounded all-rounder combo, the Kastov 762 for more firepower at range. How Does the PPSh-41 Perform in MW4?
The PPSh-41 sits at #2 in the close-range meta in MW4 multiplayer. It has a fast TTK โ around 221ms at 0-10 metres with a meta build โ and that rate stays competitive out to 40 metres before it starts to fall off against dedicated ARs. The high rate of fire rewards players who stay disciplined with their aim, while the large magazine capacity means you can push through multiple enemies before needing to reload.
Its main weakness is a tendency toward unruly horizontal recoil if you don’t build for it. The versatile and recoil control builds above both address this directly. If you’d rather not deal with it and prefer pure speed, accept the recoil and lean into the rush build instead โ at 10 metres or less, recoil barely matters anyway.

Tips for Using the PPSh-41 in MW4
- Don’t take long fights with it. The PPSh-41 is a close-range weapon. If you’re getting beaten in longer gunfights, that’s the gun’s limitation โ not the build. Rotate to your secondary or reposition.
- The 53 Round Mag is your first priority. It unlocks as you level the weapon and no other single attachment does as much for the gun’s feel. Rush toward it.
- Hip-fire is viable with the right build. The Chimmuk-INTR improves hip recoil control specifically, so on the versatile build you can hip-fire confidently in the very tightest spaces.
- Use your laser wisely. The Schlager Visiv-5 is visible in ADS. If you’re worried about giving away position, swap to the XRK Clutch-LS which is a dim ADS laser โ less visibility but still the speed boost.
- Reduce visual recoil. This makes a bigger difference than most players realise. See our guide on how to reduce visual recoil in MW4 for specific tips.
