TL;DR
- Bismuth Ore looks like rainbow-colored metallic cubes stuck to rock faces
- Walking near it drains your health — approach carefully
- You need a lightning attack to break its barrier before mining (or just a pickaxe after Patch 1.00.03)
- Best farming spot: The Witchwoods northeast of Hernand Castle — 4 deposits, up to 12 ore per run
- You can also kill Bismuth Crabs (Stoneback Abyss Crabs) for fast drops
- It’s used for plate armor upgrades at Tier 7 and beyond
If you’ve spotted those glowing, cube-shaped rainbow rocks on a mountain face and walked toward them only to watch your health drop, you’ve found Bismuth Ore. It’s one of the strangest resources in Crimson Desert — visually hard to miss, but surprisingly tricky to actually mine if you don’t know what you’re doing.
This guide covers what Bismuth Ore is, how to mine it, where to find it, and the best spots to farm big stacks of it efficiently.
What Is Bismuth Ore?
Bismuth Ore is a mid-to-late game crafting material in Crimson Desert. It forms on mountain faces and rocky surfaces as golden, square-shaped blocks with a distinctive rainbow shimmer. You’ll know it when you see it — there’s nothing else in the game that looks quite like it.
According to the game’s lore, Bismuth formed from a fragment of a fallen star that hardened over centuries. That backstory is actually the game’s way of explaining why this ore behaves so differently from everything else in the world.
The big catch? Walking close to Bismuth Ore actively damages your health. The deposit emits a hazardous field that ticks health away while you stand near it. You can’t just stroll up and start swinging your pickaxe. You need to break the barrier first — or in more recent game versions, simply bring a pickaxe.
How to Mine Bismuth Ore

After Patch 1.00.03 — Just Use a Pickaxe
If you’re playing on a recent version of the game, Pearl Abyss simplified the process significantly. Since Patch 1.00.03, Bismuth deposits are petrified by default. You can mine them the same way you mine Iron or Copper — equip your pickaxe, aim at the deposit, and swing.
No lightning attack, no barrier to break first. Just mine it like normal ore.
You can buy a pickaxe from the Provisioner’s Shop in Hernand if you don’t have one already. Alternatively, the Force Palm attack also works in place of a pickaxe. For more on tools and mining basics, check out the guide on how to get iron ore in Crimson Desert which covers the pickaxe and Force Palm in more detail.
Note: Even with the patch, walking near Bismuth Ore still drains your health. Step in, mine quickly, and step back.

Before Patch 1.00.03 — Lightning Attack Required
If you’re playing on an older version or simply want to understand how it worked originally, here’s the original method. Bismuth deposits had a magical barrier that blocked all physical attacks. A regular pickaxe did nothing. You needed a lightning-based attack to strip the barrier first, then mine the ore underneath.
There were two ways to do this:
Method 1 — Use Damiane (available from end of Chapter 3)
Damiane is one of Crimson Desert’s playable characters, unlocked near the end of Chapter 3: Howling Hill. Her kit includes a lightning-based heavy attack. On controllers, press R2/RT. On PC, press the Right Mouse Button. This summons a bolt of lightning that shatters the Bismuth formation. Once the nodes are broken, pick up the ore from the ground.
This is the earliest lightning method available in the game.
Method 2 — Use Kliff’s Lightning Bow (available from Chapter 4)
Towards the end of Chapter 4: The Price of Knowledge, Kliff visits the Sanctorum of Insight in the Abyss by climbing the Spire of the Stars. After completing the Courtyard of Precision puzzle, Kliff unlocks the lightning element for his bow. From there, select lightning from the Function radial menu, aim at a Bismuth formation, and fire a charged shot to break the barrier. Then mine as normal.
If you haven’t reached that part of the story yet, see the guide on how to get Lightning Surge at the Courtyard of Precision.
How to Pick Up Bismuth Ore After Mining
This trips up a lot of players. Once you shatter a Bismuth node, the ore drops onto the ground as small chunks. They can be hard to see, especially if you’re on a rocky surface. After mining:
- Press L1/LB (or CTRL on PC) to use the Focus mechanic. This highlights nearby items on the ground, making the ore much easier to spot.
- Mined ores also appear as icons on your minimap — look for the “X” marker near where you broke the node.
- If you killed a Bismuth Crab near a cliff, be careful — the dropped ore can roll off the edge. Try to fight these enemies on flat ground.

All Bismuth Ore Locations
1. The Witchwoods — Best Farming Spot
Region: Hernand Location: Slightly northeast of Hernand Castle, across the river
This is the most efficient Bismuth farming location in the game. Four deposits sit tightly clustered together, and each one yields up to 3 Bismuth Ore. A single run here can give you up to 12 ore — and the tight layout means you barely have to travel between nodes.
This is the spot to prioritize if you’re stocking up for refinement. Do all four deposits in one go, then move on.
2. Scholastone Institute — First Encounter Location
Region: Hernand Location: Southwest of Hernand City, along the mountain faces near Lake Kharonso
This is often the first place players stumble across Bismuth Ore naturally, since the path to the Scholastone Institute runs right past these formations. Several nodes sit on the mountain faces along the lake. It’s a solid secondary stop if you’re clearing the Witchwoods and want to extend your farming run.
Head southwest from Hernand City and look for the Scholastone Institute on your map.
3. Anvil Hill — Early Game Node
Region: Hernand Location: Along the base of Anvil Hill, southeast of Hernand
There’s a smaller cluster of Bismuth nodes along the base of Anvil Hill. The area also has a spawn of Bismuth Crabs (Stoneback Abyss Crabs) on the cliff edge south of the hill, right below the Abyss Cresset. This makes it a two-for-one farming stop — nodes and crabs in the same area.
Since Anvil Hill comes up frequently during early-game quests, you’ll pass through often enough to check if nodes have respawned without making a dedicated trip.
4. Drakesfall Castle
Region: Hernandian Territory Location: Drakesfall Castle courtyard, near Drakesfall Gorge
Drakesfall Castle has multiple Bismuth Ore veins in the courtyard plus a healthy population of Bismuth Crabs. A full run of this location — clearing all nodes and killing all crabs — can yield around 50 Bismuth Ore and 10 Abyss Cells in one pass.
The crabs here hit hard, so come prepared with solid gear. If you haven’t sorted your equipment yet, the guides on how to upgrade weapons and armor and how to reinforce equipment will help you get ready.
For the puzzle content nearby, check out the Drakesfall Gorge statues puzzle solution.
5. White Mountains and Everfrost Peaks
Region: Higher elevations Location: Mountain faces at altitude
Bismuth Ore also appears on mountain faces at higher elevations, including the White Mountains region and peaks associated with Everfrost. These are less convenient for dedicated farming runs, but worth picking up if you’re passing through.
For hard-to-reach nodes on cliff faces, you can fire a charged bow shot at the deposit and let the ore chunks fall to flatter ground below, making collection easier.
How to Farm Bismuth Crabs (Stoneback Abyss Crabs)
Mining nodes gives you a steady supply of ore, but killing Bismuth Crabs is often faster for bulk farming. These enemies carry Bismuth Ore deposits on their backs and drop multiple ores when killed.
Here’s what you need to know:
Where to find them: Southeast of Hernand, south of Anvil Hill near the Abyss Cresset, at Drakesfall Castle, and near Abyss Nexus fast travel points scattered across Pywel.
What they drop: Multiple Bismuth Ore per kill, occasional Abyss Cells, and sometimes Destruction materials. If you need Abyss Cells alongside Bismuth, check the guide on how to get Abyss Cells in Crimson Desert.
How to fight them: They have high physical defense and hit hard. Lightning attacks from Damiane are effective — they damage the crab and can crack nearby Bismuth deposits at the same time. Avoid these early in the game if your gear isn’t up to scratch.
Smart respawn trick at Drakesfall: Leave one or two Bismuth Ore veins untouched, then teleport to a nearby Abyss Nexus to reset the spawns. This lets you farm the area repeatedly without fully clearing it each time. See how to fast travel in Crimson Desert if you need a refresher on Abyss Nexus travel.
Can You Buy Bismuth Ore?
Yes — you don’t have to mine it yourself. Bismuth Ore can be purchased from vendors in major towns. The Mineral Shop in Karin Quarry stocks it, so if you’re in a hurry or just need a few pieces to hit a crafting threshold, check there first.
If you haven’t unlocked the Mineral Shop yet, the guide on how to unlock the Mineral Shop in Crimson Desert walks you through it.
What Is Bismuth Ore Used For?
Bismuth Ore is primarily a refinement material. Here’s where it matters:
Plate armor upgrades. It’s required to push plate armor — especially boots and chest pieces — to Tier 7 and beyond. If you’re working toward endgame equipment levels, Bismuth becomes essential. Stock up before visiting the Blacksmith so you don’t have to make multiple farming trips between upgrades.
Weapon and armor refinement generally. Bismuth feeds into the broader refinement system at the Blacksmith alongside other materials. Learn the full system in the how to reinforce equipment guide.
Camp upgrades. Some Greymane Camp structure upgrades require Bismuth Ore as a building material.
Crafting unique items. Several items in the game use Bismuth Ore as a component, including the Bismuth Cannon, Bismuth Spear, Kuku Bismuth Spear, Angular and Round Bismuth Ornaments, the Antumbra Bismuth Protection Suit, and Crude Bismuth Cannonballs.
Selling for money. Bismuth Ore sells for a high price at vendors. Farming Bismuth Crabs and selling the drops is one of the more reliable money-making methods in the game. For more ways to earn fast, check out how to make money fast in Crimson Desert.
If you’re farming Bismuth specifically to refine Legendary gear like the Light of the Battlefield Set, the Witchwoods cluster northeast of Hernand Castle gives you the best yield per minute to keep your refinement progress moving.
Bismuth Ore Farming Tips
Ore nodes respawn after roughly 7 in-game days. Don’t do small trickle runs. Mine everything at once across all your known locations, then come back in a week. You can speed up the wait by using the time skip function at campfires or beds.
Use Focus to find dropped ore. Press L1/LB/CTRL after breaking a node to highlight anything on the ground nearby. This stops you from walking away and leaving ore behind.
Shoot high nodes down. If a Bismuth deposit is on a cliff face you can’t easily reach, use Kliff’s Charged Shot skill to break it from below. The ore falls to the ground for easy collection.
Bring healing food before farming. Standing near Bismuth Ore chips away at your health even after the patch. Take a stack of food before a dedicated farming run. For the best healing options, see the guide on how to cook the best healing food in Crimson Desert.
Get your max health up. More health means more buffer while you’re standing near deposits. Check the guide on how to get max health in Crimson Desert for tips on building your health pool.
Pair Bismuth runs with other ore farming. The Hernand region has Iron Ore, Copper Ore, and Silver Ore in the same general area. Run everything in one loop. Guides for copper ore, silver ore, and gold ore have all the node locations if you want to map out a full resource run.
