How to Unlock Lightning Surge in Crimson Desert
If Lightning Surge and Lightning Lv 1 are grayed out in your skill menu, you are not alone. These lightning elemental abilities cannot be unlocked with regular Abyss Artifacts. They are locked behind a specific Abyss puzzle called the Courtyard of Precision.
Here is everything you need to know about how to get there and how to complete it.
Where to Start: Spire of the Stars
The Courtyard of Precision is accessed through the Spire of the Stars Abyss. This location unlocks in Chapter 4 via the Scholastone Institute, which sits in the southwest part of the map in Hernand.

Once you unlock the Spire of the Stars, head inside and enter the Abyss from there.
Abyss Puzzles You Must Complete First
Before you can reach the Courtyard of Precision, you must clear three Abyss puzzles in order:

After completing all three, you will arrive at the Courtyard of Precision.
What to Bring
Before starting the puzzle, make sure you have:
- A Bow equipped
- Plenty of Arrows
- The Focused Shot skill available
Focused Shot is the key mechanic here. Without it, you cannot complete this puzzle.
How to Complete the Courtyard of Precision in Crimson Desert
Step 1 – Shoot the Yellow Targets on All Four Sides
When you enter the Courtyard of Precision, face north. You will see 5 shapes — 3 blue and 2 yellow.
Your goal is to shoot both yellow shapes at the same time to turn them blue.
Here is how to use Focused Shot:
- Hold L2 to enter aim mode
- Press L3 + R3 to activate Focused Shot
- Use R1 to mark the yellow targets
- Release L2 to fire at both targets simultaneously
Repeat this on all four sides of the room. Once all yellow shapes are turned blue, the next part activates.
Step 2 – Fly Up the Activated Fan
In the center of the room, a fan will activate. Stand over it and press Square to open your wings and fly upward.
Rise to the top of the room.
Step 3 – Shoot Targets While Airborne
This is the tricky part. Once you are in the air:
- Hold L2 to enter slow-motion aim mode
- Mark the yellow targets on the first circle using Focused Shot
- Then quickly mark the targets on the second circle
You need to shoot them while you are still above them. If you pass the targets before firing, the shot will not register. React quickly and make sure you are aligned before releasing.
There are three targets on the first circle and three on the second circle. Hit all six and the Abyss panel in the north area will activate.
Step 4 – Activate the Abyss Gate
Land back on the ground. Walk to the Abyss panel in the north and use Force Palm to activate it.
The Abyss Gate will open. The moment it activates, you will automatically unlock:
- Lightning
- Lightning Surge
Walk through the Abyss Gate to continue to the next puzzle and collect your Abyss Artifact.
Tips for the Courtyard of Precision
- If you miss the airborne targets, fly back up and try again. There is no penalty for retrying.
- Mark both yellow targets before releasing L2. Releasing too early fires only one arrow.
- Stay calm during the airborne section. The slow-motion window gives you more time than it feels.
