Crimson Desert Sanctum of Absolution: Overview

The Sanctum of Absolution is one of the hardest Sanctums to cleanse in Crimson Desert. Unlike others, it forces you into a full boss fight before you even touch the puzzle. The boss — Antumbra’s Sword — hits extremely hard and has attacks that can end the fight in seconds if you are not ready.

The upside is that the rewards are among the best you can get at this stage. You walk out with a powerful two-handed sword, an Abyss Artifact, and blueprints for crafting upgrades.

The Sanctum of Absolution sits in the southwest of the Hernand region, directly south of Scholastone Institute. It is positioned between the Witchwoods and Sunset Valley, far from the main roads.

There is an Abyss Nexus fast travel point in the area. Activate it when you first arrive so you can return quickly on repeat attempts. See our fast travel guide if you are unsure how that system works.

Requirements Before You Start

There are two things you must do before attempting this Sanctum:

1. Reach Chapter 5 and unlock Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom. You cannot interact with or solve any Sanctum puzzles until this is done. The boss fight itself has no chapter requirement, but the puzzle after it does. If you try to solve anything before Chapter 5, the game simply will not let you.

2. Prepare your gear properly. Antumbra’s Sword hits very hard. We recommend getting your Health to at least Level 6 before attempting this fight. Check our guide on how to get max health in Crimson Desert — and if you also want to get max stamina before this fight, that helps too.

Also note: this boss is tied to the Cloister of Ruination faction quest, not just the Witch of Wisdom quest. If you explored the area before taking the Witch of Wisdom quest, you may find the puzzle locked until you defeat the boss first. That is normal.

How to Prepare for Antumbra’s Sword

Do not rush this fight. Here is what to have ready before you enter the courtyard:

  • At least 3 Palmar Pills — these let you continue the fight after being knocked down without starting over. See our guide on how to get and use Palmar Pills.
  • Weapons and armor refined to Tier 3 or Tier 4 — see how to reinforce equipment in Crimson Desert.
  • Focus Level 3 — invest Abyss Artifacts into the Focus node on the skill tree. This is the single most important preparation step. At Level 3, Focus slows time enough to let you reliably read the boss’s attacks and set up parries. Without it, his speed makes the fight much harder.
  • Blinding Flash skill unlocked — this is your primary tool for the entire fight (explained below). Our Blinding Flash guide covers exactly how to use it.
  • Blinding Flash Finisher unlocked — this is the follow-up skill that gap-closes after a blind and chains directly into a high-damage combo.
  • Stab skill equipped — applies bleed damage over time. Useful between your main offensive windows.
  • Healing food — cook plenty of grilled meat or bring clear soup. You will need it.
  • Keen Senses Lv. 2 (optional but recommended) — this passive slows time during dodges, making the boss’s patterns significantly easier to read.

The area around the Sanctum will be full of Umbra’s forces. You can ignore every single one of them. Clearing the area does nothing. Only defeating Antumbra’s Sword counts toward liberating the Sanctum.

How to Beat Antumbra’s Sword in Crimson Desert

Antumbra’s Sword is fast, hits hard, and has attacks that can one-shot you if you are careless. The key to winning is not out-DPSing the boss — it is controlling the fight using Blinding Flash to interrupt his most dangerous moves and punishing him during the openings.

The Core Strategy: Blinding Flash + Parry Loop

This is the most reliable way to win:

  1. Enter Focus mode by pressing both sticks simultaneously on controller, or pressing X on keyboard.
  2. Focus mode slows time, letting you read the boss’s attacks more clearly.
  3. When Antumbra’s Sword comes in with a normal melee swing, hold and spam the block button (LB on Xbox / L1 on PlayStation / CTRL on keyboard) right before it lands. This gets you a guaranteed parry.
  4. A successful parry staggers the boss. Use that window to hit him with a combo.
  5. After the combo, re-enter Focus mode and repeat the cycle.
  6. Each parry fills the boss’s poise bar. Once it is full, he becomes vulnerable for a longer duration — use this window to land your biggest combo.

Focus → Parry → Combo → Repeat. That is the backbone of the fight.

Using Blinding Flash to Cancel Dangerous Attacks

Blinding Flash is even more important than the parry method because it lets you completely skip his most lethal attacks. Use it in these two situations:

Ground Thrust: When you see the boss lift his sword with both hands, fire Blinding Flash immediately. This cancels the attack before the energy waves go out. Without this interrupt, the Ground Thrust is extremely hard to avoid cleanly.

Triple Shadow Strike: The boss teleports around the arena in a sequence of three moves. Dodge the first two hits. When you dodge the third teleport, immediately use Blinding Flash. This cancels the chain and gives you a full offensive window.

After landing Blinding Flash, follow up with the Blinding Flash Finisher right away. It gap-closes to the boss and chains directly into a high-damage combo. This is the largest single damage window the fight offers.

Between Blinding Flash windows, use Stab to apply bleed damage. It ticks passively and adds up meaningfully over a long fight.

Antumbra’s Sword Attack Patterns

There are two types of attacks in this fight: blockable attacks and unblockable attacks (signalled by a red glow on the boss).

When you see the red glow, do not try to parry. Dodge instead.

Unblockable Attack 1 — Vertical Sword Slashes: The boss swings down in a series of vertical cuts. Dodge sideways through the gaps between slashes. Do not panic-roll in a straight line.

Unblockable Attack 2 — Circular Slash into Spectral Clones: The boss performs a wide circular sweep, then summons shadow copies that launch a flurry of follow-up strikes. Spam the dodge button to get out of the area. Once the sequence ends, immediately enter Focus mode and prepare to punish.

Teleport Slash: The boss disappears and reappears at intervals with a slash attack. Dodge the moment it reappears and keep your Focus ready for the third teleport so you can use Blinding Flash.

Arena Tip: Use the Pillar as Cover

There is a large stone pillar in the arena that cannot be destroyed by any of Antumbra’s attacks. When you are low on health or need a moment to recover, move behind the pillar. Bait the boss into melee range and set up your next Blinding Flash from there.

Do not panic-roll randomly. Accidental rolls into the boss’s attack line will get you killed. Stay deliberate and reactive.

After defeating the boss you will receive:

  • Vessel of Dark Pursuit — a powerful two-handed sword. This weapon comes with the Wound of Darkness Abyss Gear mapped to the Turning Slash input, letting you perform the vertical slash move from the boss itself. It can carry you through mid-game and into late-game if you keep reinforcing it.
  • Abyss Artifact — used for skill tree upgrades.

To get even more out of your new weapon, see our equipment reinforcement guide and Abyss Gears guide.

Sanctum of Absolution Puzzle Solution in Crimson Desert

With Antumbra’s Sword defeated, the Sanctum is liberated. Now you need to solve the puzzle to fully cleanse it. Head up the stone staircase into the building directly opposite the boss arena.

Step 1: Get the First Reactor Core (Cube)

Inside the building you will find a pile of clay pots. Smash the pots to reveal the first Fusion Reactor Core. It is cube-shaped. Grab it using your Axiom Force ability and seal it inside your Kuku Pot. Our guide on how to use Axiom Force explains the mechanic if you are unfamiliar with it.

Step 2: Get the Second Reactor Core (Cylinder)

Climb forward onto the raised platform. The floor will break and drop you into a lower room. As soon as you land, watch out for the fire trap (incinerator) directly ahead — it will damage you. Quickly move right into a side room.

Inside you will find the second Fusion Reactor Core. This one is cylindrical with a rounded end, floating in the air. Grab it with Axiom Force and seal it in your Kuku Pot.

Step 3: Place the Cylindrical Core on a Broken Pillar

Head back outside. You will see broken pillars near the main machine. Take the cylindrical Reactor Core out of your Kuku Pot and place it on top of one of the broken pillars. Once positioned, climb on top of the core and perform an Aerial Force Palm (jump and use Force Palm while airborne) to lock it into place.

Step 4: Insert the Cube Core into the Machine

Take the cube-shaped Reactor Core out of your Kuku Pot. Find the square-shaped hole in the main machine and insert the cube inside. Then use a Force Palm on it to push it fully into position.

The Sanctum of Absolution is now cleansed. You will receive blueprints for the Enhanced Kuku Pot and Kuku Spear as your reward.

How to Unlock the Secret Treasure Chest Room

There is a locked room in the Sanctum of Absolution that most players miss. It is located just above the area where you found the clay pots and the first Reactor Core.

Here is how to open it:

Step 1: Stand directly in front of the locked room’s door. Charge a Focused Force Palm and aim at the square-shaped indent on the wall beside the door. Release to flip the wall panel.

Step 2: Go outside the building. Look for the flipped wall section on the exterior of the Sanctum. It will be sitting a few feet off the ground, acting as a makeshift platform.

Step 3: Stand on the flipped wall platform and use a Force Palm on the second part of the wall above you. This flips it again, which sends you inside the locked room.

Step 4: Open the treasure chest to receive the Sunset Reed Cloth Boots. These boots come equipped with a set of Abyss Gears that you can use directly or extract and apply to other equipment pieces.

To exit the room: Light the stone lantern inside. This opens the bars on the door and lets you walk out normally.
