Keglord Garnier Mk. XXIII is a mechanical giant waiting for you during the Nightmare on Stage quest in Demeniss. The fight takes place at the Laughing Marionette and it’s one of the nastiest encounters in the mid-game. His attacks hit constantly, many are undodgeable, and the HUD actively tries to mislead you with a false objective.

The good news: once you know the pattern, this fight is very repeatable. Two abilities. Two phases. Constant healing. That’s the formula.

What to Bring Before Fighting Keglord Garnier

Preparation determines how painful this fight gets. Here’s what you need:

Skills Required

Turning Slash — R1+R2 (PS) / RB+RT (Xbox) / E+F (PC). This is your primary stun tool. The attack animation gives you brief damage immunity, which is important when Keglord’s hits are everywhere. Upgrade it with Abyss Artifacts in the blue skill tree before this fight — the enhanced version deals noticeably more stun buildup.

Stab — R1+Triangle (PS) / RB+Y (Xbox). Automatically unlocked. This is your damage finisher on exposed weak points. After Stab connects on a green weakness point, follow up with R2 / RT to trigger the explosion.

Those are the only two skills that matter here. You don’t need anything else.

Healing Items

Bring at least 100 Grilled Meat. Most of Keglord’s attacks are unavoidable — lock-on missiles, lightning bombs, and wide splash fists will catch you no matter how well you move. The whole strategy is to out-heal the unavoidable damage rather than avoid it.

The cheapest Grilled Meat (1 raw meat to cook, restores 140 health) is actually the best choice — 10 pieces gives 1,400 total health recovery, far better value than one premium meat restoring 280 from 12 raw meats. Stock up at the meat vendor in Hernand, cook at the pot right next to them, and have 100+ before you enter.

You can eat food every 2 seconds during combat, and even during attack animations. Eat while you attack — never stop to heal as a separate action.

Braised Meat and Meat Skewers are also great for Spirit regeneration to keep Turning Slash available. Optional

Lightning Resistance armor helps slightly since Keglord uses electrical attacks, but it’s not essential if you have enough healing items. Check our ice resistance and frost protection guide for context on how resistance stats work in general.

Important — Ignore the Blinding Flash Prompt

During the fight, the HUD will display an objective telling you to “Detect Weakness by using Blinding Flash.” This is a decoy — do not follow it. Using Blinding Flash here does nothing useful and wastes time. Ignore it entirely and follow the strategy below.

How to Beat Keglord Garnier Mk. XXIII — Phase 1

Phase 1 runs until Keglord’s blue health bar is fully depleted. Your targets in this phase are his hands and shoulders, in that order.

Step 1 – Damage the Hands

Watch Keglord and wait for him to slam one of his hands onto the ground.
When it hits, rush to the hand and attack it repeatedly. This exposes the green weakness point on the hand.
Once the green weakness glows, use Stab (R1+Triangle / RB+Y), then immediately follow with R2 / RT to trigger the explosion. This deals a large burst of damage.
While waiting for the next hand slam, attack Keglord’s central coil with Turning Slash (R1+R2 / RB+RT) to build his stun meter. The Turning Slash animation also makes you briefly immune to damage — use this window aggressively.
Repeat for the second hand.

Step 2 – Destroy the Shoulders

Once both hands are done, Keglord’s shoulders become the target.

Use Turning Slash on the central coil until Keglord is stunned and staggers.
When he staggers, climb up to his shoulders.
Use Stab on each shoulder weakness point until the blue health bar empties.

How to Beat Keglord Garnier Mk. XXIII — Phase 2

When the blue bar is gone, Phase 2 begins. Keglord changes pattern and becomes more aggressive. His lock-on missiles and lightning attacks come faster now.

Keep attacking the central coil with Turning Slash to build stun.
Eat constantly — damage is coming fast and unavoidable.
Build stun until Keglord collapses to the floor. This is the kill window.
Sprint to his glowing green head immediately.
Use Stab on the head, then draw your sword (R2 / RT) while the Stab connects. Done correctly, this instantly kills Keglord.

Keglord’s Attacks and How to Handle Them

Keglord has three main attacks that deal unavoidable or near-unavoidable damage. Don’t waste energy trying to dodge everything — just keep healing:

Lock-on missiles — Keglord fires homing projectiles. These are extremely hard to dodge. Eat through the damage and keep attacking.

Lightning bombs — Exploding electrical area attacks. Spread around the arena. Move between explosions where possible, but expect to take hits.

Splash damage fists — His hand slams create shockwaves in a wide area. These are the same hand slams you want to attack, so stay nearby and be ready to rush in after the shockwave clears.

Parrying is ineffective against Keglord — his attacks are mechanical and unblockable. Don’t waste stamina trying to block or parry. Dodge what you can, eat food for everything else.
