TL;DR

  • The Kingshield Mountains Ruins puzzle requires stacking four clay jars on the immovable base jar in front of the Abyss Cresset
  • Stack from largest to smallest and keep each jar centered or the tower will fall
  • Only use small, round grey/brown jars — tall vases and wide bowls will not balance
  • Jars with a reddish tint are enemies — do not use them for the stack
  • After stacking, stand still for about 2 seconds for the game to register and complete the puzzle
  • You earn an Abyss Artifact and unlock a permanent fast travel waypoint
  • Jar enemies in the area drop Garnet and Epidote — a good early farming spot

Crimson Desert: Kingshield Mountains Ruins Puzzle Solution

The Kingshield Mountains Ruins puzzle in Crimson Desert looks confusing at first. There are no instructions, no quest markers, and the area is full of clay pots that look identical to the enemies hiding among them. Most players spend several minutes smashing everything in sight before realising that destruction is not the goal.

The solution is simple once you know what to do: stack four jars on top of each other in front of the Abyss Cresset. But getting the stack to stay up requires a bit more care than just grabbing random pots and piling them up.

Kingshield Mountains Ruins Location in Crimson Desert

The Kingshield Mountains Ruins is located west of the Hexe Sanctuary and also west of the town of Tariv. If you are coming from the Hexe Sanctuary, look for ancient stone arches covered in moss heading west. You will know you are in the right spot when your mini-map shows an Abyss Cresset icon with the Mysterious Energy marker.

There is also an Abyss Nexus fast travel point nearby. Activate it as soon as you arrive so you can return quickly later — especially useful if you plan to farm the jar enemies here. Our fast travel guide covers how the Abyss Nexus system works if you are not familiar with it yet.

Understanding the Puzzle Before You Start

When you arrive, you will see two important visual clues:

Clue 1: There is an immovable jar sitting directly in front of the Abyss Cresset. You cannot pick it up or destroy it. This is the base of your stack.

Clue 2: Somewhere nearby in the ruins, you can spot a reference stack of four jars already balanced on top of each other. This is the game’s way of showing you exactly what your finished stack should look like.

Everything else around the ruins is either a destructible decorative pot, a carry-able round jar you can use, or a disguised enemy. Read the section below on enemies before you start grabbing jars.

Watch Out: Jar Enemies in the Area

The Kingshield Mountains Ruins is connected to the Hexe Sanctuary, and the jar enemies here are Hexe creatures in disguise. They look exactly like regular clay pots sitting in the field.

Here is how to tell them apart:

  • Enemy jars often have a faint reddish tint or sit in unusual spots — like the middle of a path or slightly away from the main cluster of pots
  • Puzzle jars are dull grey or brown, round, and grouped near the ruins walls and ground

Do not use enemy jars for your stack. Even if you manage to balance one on the tower, the Abyss Cresset will stay locked and show “Locked” instead of completing. If that happens, it means the stack used an enemy jar that had not woken up yet. Clear the area and try again with proper inanimate jars.

The safest approach: before touching any jars, walk around the perimeter of the ruins and isolate any enemies you spot. Fight them one at a time by pulling them away from the group. Do not charge in and start breaking pots — that wakes multiple enemies at once and you will get swarmed quickly.

Also important: do not use Force Palm near the center of the ruins. The AOE will shatter the small jars you need for the puzzle. Save your Force Palm for the enemies.

How to Solve the Kingshield Mountains Ruins Puzzle

Once you have cleared out or avoided the enemies, here are the exact steps to complete the puzzle:

Step 1: Identify the correct jars Look for the small, round clay jars scattered around the ruins. These are the only ones that will stack properly. Do not try to use tall vases or wide shallow bowls — their shape means they will not sit flat on top of the previous jar and the tower will keep falling.

Step 2: Pick up a jar Walk up to a small round jar and interact with it to pick it up. Carry it to the base jar in front of the Abyss Cresset.

Step 3: Stack largest to smallest This is the most important detail that the puzzle does not tell you. Stack the jars from largest to smallest, bottom to top. Place the biggest jar you can find first, then a slightly smaller one, and so on up to the smallest on top. This mimics the reference stack in the ruins and keeps the tower balanced.

Step 4: Keep each jar centered When placing each new jar, make sure it sits directly in the center of the one below. Off-center placement will cause the tower to lean and eventually fall. Take your time with each placement.

Step 5: Approach from the front only Kliff has a step-over animation for small objects on the ground. If you walk over your stack while building it, you will knock it over. Always approach from the front and place jars facing the Cresset directly.

Step 6: Use Axiom Force for better precision (optional) If you keep dropping jars at awkward angles, try using Axiom Force to lift the jar and hover it above the stack before releasing. This gives you a top-down view of the alignment and makes centering much easier than Kliff’s standard third-person carry position. Our guide on how to use Axiom Force covers the mechanic in full.

Step 7: Wait 2 seconds after stacking Once all four jars are in place, step back and stand still for about 2 seconds. The game needs a brief moment to register the completed stack. The Abyss Cresset will then unlock on its own. You do not need to press anything.

What to Do If a Jar Breaks

Jars can break during placement — this is completely normal. Just pick up another one nearby and try again. Getting the angle right takes a couple of attempts for most players.

If you run out of carry-able jars entirely, walk toward the Hexe Sanctuary border and then return. The clean inanimate jars will respawn in their original positions. You do not need to wait long.

Rewards for Solving the Kingshield Mountains Ruins Puzzle

After the puzzle registers, interact with the Abyss Cresset to collect your rewards:

  • 1 Abyss Artifact — used for skill tree upgrades including Stamina, Health, Spirit, and new skills
  • Permanent fast travel waypoint in the Kingshield Mountains area

The Abyss Artifact is especially valuable early on. See our guide on how to get max stamina in Crimson Desert to know where spending it will give you the best return, as well as our how to get max health in Crimson Desert guide for the other key stat upgrade path.

Bonus: Farm Garnet and Epidote Here

After solving the puzzle, the jar enemies in this area become a useful repeatable farming spot. They drop Garnet and Epidote, both of which are useful early materials.

Because the enemies respawn constantly, you can return here whenever you need ore. The trick is to fight them one at a time. Pull single enemies away from the group before engaging. Rushing the area and waking everything at once makes the fight much harder than it needs to be.

If you need Epidote specifically, our guide on how to get Epidote in Crimson Desert covers all the ways to find it across the game.
