Crimson Desert Deepfog Basin Dragon Puzzle Solution

The Deepfog Basin Dragon Head Ruins is one of 37 Ancient Ruins challenges scattered across Pywel in Crimson Desert. Each one hides an Abyss Cresset behind a puzzle, and solving it rewards you with an Abyss Artifact — which converts into a Skill Point for your skill tree. These are worth going out of your way for, especially for unlocking combat skills and boosting core stats like health and stamina.

This particular ruins features a sliding tile puzzle, where you rearrange six movable blocks to complete a painted dragon mural. It sounds simple, but the tight spacing and block movement mechanics trip up a lot of players.

Where to Find the Deepfog Basin Dragon Head Ruins

The Deepfog Basin Dragon Head Ruins sit on the hillside west of Calphade Castle and Thalwynd, in the northern part of Hernand near the Central Guard Post. You’ll need to go through a mountain pass to reach it — look for the Mysterious Energy icon on your map as you get close. That’s how all Ancient Ruins appear before you investigate them.

There’s also a Deepfog Basin Abyss Nexus further north, which you can use as a fast travel point to reach the area more easily once it’s unlocked.

Note: Don’t confuse this with the Deepfog Basin Pillars puzzle (Everfrost Ruins), which is a separate Ancient Ruins challenge located deep in the forest near Argen Peaks. Both are in the same general area but are entirely different puzzles.

Clear the Wolves First

When you arrive, don’t drop down into the ruins right away. There are several wolves patrolling the surrounding area. If you ignore them and go into the puzzle, they’ll jump down and interrupt you mid-solve. Deal with them first. You can skin them afterward for hide and meat — useful for crafting and cooking healing food.

Once the area is clear, head down into the ruins. You’ll see a dragon statue with instructions in front of the puzzle board.

How the Puzzle Mechanic Works

Before solving, get comfortable with the controls. You need to use the Stab One-Handed Skill to grab and drag each tile:

PlatformInput
PlayStationL1 + Triangle
XboxLB + Y
PCLeft Shift + Right Click

Stand next to a tile, use the stab input, and then push your movement stick or keys in the direction you want to drag it. You can move tiles up, down, left, or right — but only into empty spaces.

The puzzle board has 9 total slots arranged in a 3×3 grid:

  • The bottom row (3 tiles) is already painted and locked in place
  • The top and middle rows (6 tiles) are the ones you need to rearrange

The goal is to form the complete dragon mural, which connects the movable tiles with the fixed bottom row paintings beneath them.

Step-by-Step Deepfog Basin Dragon Puzzle Solution

Work through this in order. You’ll need to create empty spaces to maneuver tiles, so follow the sequence exactly.

Step 1: Drag the sun tile to the top-right box. This is its correct final position.

Step 2: Move the dragon wing tile (the one currently in the middle area) to the bottom-left box. This frees up space in the center rows.

Tip: If a tile gets stuck in a tight spot, move it in a zigzag pattern — side to side — rather than forcing it in one direction. You can also temporarily shift neighboring tiles out of the way to create more room.

Step 3: Move the dragon’s body tile into the bottom-middle box, placing it next to the dragon wing.

Step 4: Move the dragon’s head tile into the bottom-right box, next to the dragon body. The bottom row is now fully formed.

Step 5: Move the tip of the dragon’s wing tile to the top-middle box.

At this point, the top row should be complete. Now push the entire bottom row upward to the middle. This reveals the pre-painted pictures underneath, which connect with the tiles you’ve just arranged.

Once every tile slots into the correct position, the mural locks in and the completion cutscene triggers automatically.

If the Cutscene Doesn’t Trigger

This is a known issue. If the puzzle looks complete but nothing happens:

  • Nudge each tile slightly — they may be a pixel or two off from their correct slot
  • Make sure no tile is overlapping a border
  • If it still doesn’t work, save and reload the game, then re-enter the ruins and try again

This fix resolves the issue for most players.

Deepfog Basin Dragon Head Ruins Reward

Once the puzzle is solved, the Abyss Cresset room opens. Go inside and interact with the Abyss Cresset to claim your Abyss Artifact.

The Abyss Artifact converts into a Skill Point, which you can spend in the skill tree on new combat moves or stat upgrades like health, stamina, and attack power. With 37 Ancient Ruins in the game, completing all of them adds up to a significant boost to Kliff’s overall power.

The activated Abyss Cresset also becomes a fast travel waypoint, which makes getting around the Deepfog Basin area much easier going forward.
