Drakesfall Gorge Location

The ruins sit in northeastern Hernand, just past the Hills of No Return and close to the border with Demeniss. On your map, look for Drakesfall Gorge in the northern part of Hernand. The puzzle area is on a plateau near a Hernandian soldier encampment, southeast of Drakesfall Castle.

If you have not been to this area yet, it will appear as a Mysterious Energy zone on your map — the fogged-out area with a question mark. Get close enough and it reveals itself.

You can reach this area on horseback from Hernand in a few minutes. Our horse guide can help if you are still looking for a good mount. And if you want to unlock fast travel nearby first, check our how to fast travel in Crimson Desert guide.

How the Drakesfall Gorge Statues Puzzle Works

When you arrive, you will find a crumbling stone courtyard. Two rows of Hernandian soldier statues line both sides of a narrow pathway. At the far end of the path, sitting on a throne, is a large Elder Statue gripping a sword.

This puzzle is a direct Red Light, Green Light mechanic. Here is the core rule:

When the Elder Statue’s eyes glow blue and face you — stop completely. When it turns away — move forward.

That is the whole puzzle. But a few things make it trickier than it sounds.

Step on the stone pressure plate at the entrance to the path to start the sequence. The moment you do, the soldier statues raise their swords and the Elder Statue activates. It will now begin rotating its head back and forth, periodically looking straight down the path at you.

The detection system is strict. Any movement at all while those blue eyes are on you counts as a failure. The statue’s eyes turn red, and you get sent back to the starting pressure plate to try again. There is no health penalty — just lost time.

The statue’s rotation speed also changes slightly as you get closer to the end. Players who think they have memorized a fixed pattern often get caught out near the finish line because of this. Do not rely on counting seconds. Watch the statue.

Drakesfall Gorge Statues Puzzle Solution – Step by Step

Step 1 – Stand on the Pressure Plate

Walk up to the stone pressure plate at the entrance of the path between the statues. Step on it to begin the puzzle. The soldier statues raise their weapons and the Elder Statue wakes up.

Step 2 – Always Walk, Never Sprint

This is the most important tip in the whole guide. Never sprint toward the statue. Kliff has real momentum in Crimson Desert. If you are sprinting and let go of the stick, he keeps sliding forward for a step or two. That extra movement while the statue is looking is what gets most players caught.

Walk the entire way. You cover the distance slowly, but you will make it without the panic stops that catch sprinters off guard.

If you are on controller, just tilt the stick gently instead of pushing all the way.

Step 3 – Move When the Statue Turns Away

Watch the Elder Statue carefully. When it rotates away from you and its back is facing you, start walking forward between the soldier statues. Close as much distance as you safely can in this window.

Each safe window gives you a few seconds to advance. Do not try to rush all the way in one go. Take steady ground each time.

Step 4 – Freeze the Moment It Turns Back

The instant you hear the statue beginning to rotate back toward you, stop completely. Release the stick or let go of the movement key entirely. Do not touch any directional input while those blue eyes are facing you.

Use the audio as your cue. The sound of the statue’s head rotating gives you a brief moment to react before the gaze reaches you. Freeze first, look second.

Step 5 – Repeat Until You Reach the Throne

Keep alternating between moving and freezing. Each time you advance safely, you are a bit closer to the end. Keep the same calm rhythm throughout.

If you need to stop mid-movement and are worried about your momentum, crouching helps. It forces Kliff to stop faster. Players who keep getting caught during stops should try switching to a crouch walk for the whole run — it is slower but much easier to halt on demand.

Step 6 – Reach the Abyss Cresset to Complete the Puzzle

Once you reach the far end and approach the Abyss Cresset pillar near the Elder Statue, the puzzle completes. The sequence ends automatically. You do not need to fight anything or press any special button.

Interact with the Abyss Cresset to collect your reward and lock in the fast travel point.

What If You Get Caught?

Getting caught is not punishing beyond the annoyance of starting over. The Elder Statue’s eyes flash red, and you get sent back to the pressure plate. There is no health damage. No combat. You just restart.

The timing windows are the same on every attempt. If you keep failing, slow down even more and trust your ears over your eyes. The audio cue for the statue turning is your best warning system.

You can also try pulling out your lantern mid-movement if you need an emergency stop. It forces an immediate halt that can sometimes save a run when you misjudge your momentum.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Sprinting. This gets more players killed than anything else. The extra slide at the end of a sprint is almost always what triggers the fail.

Moving too soon after stopping. Wait a full beat after the statue turns away before moving. Some players get caught because they start moving while the statue is still mid-rotation.

Ignoring the audio. The sound of the statue turning is your best cue. Do not focus only on the visuals — by the time the eyes are on you, it may already be too late to stop cleanly.

Weapon drawn. Keep your weapon put away during this puzzle. Having a weapon drawn can slightly expand your detection hitbox, making it easier for the statue to spot you. See our guide on how to put away weapons in Crimson Desert if you are not sure how.

Active status effects. Some active effects can also affect your detection area. If you have potions active, they will not cause a fail on their own, but keep it in mind if you are struggling unexpectedly.

Drakesfall Gorge Puzzle Reward

Completing the puzzle gives you two things.

First, the Abyss Cresset activates as a permanent fast travel point. You can teleport to Drakesfall Gorge from anywhere on the map from this point forward. That is extremely useful given how deep into the northeastern Hernand map this area sits.

Second, you receive an Abyss Artifact. These are used to unlock new abilities and boost Kliff’s core attributes throughout the game. Every Ancient Ruins puzzle gives one, and there are 37 of them across Pywel, so clearing them all adds up significantly.

You can track which Ancient Ruins puzzles you have finished in your Journal under the Challenges tab. This makes it easy to see what is left to do across Hernand, Pailune, Demeniss, Delesyia, and the Crimson Desert region.
