How Many Characters Are in Final Fantasy Resonance?
There are 8 playable characters in Final Fantasy Resonance. All of them are original heroes from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, reimagined for this new HD-2D RPG. You run 4 of them in battle at a time. The other 4 wait in reserve and can be swapped in when needed.
Every character has a set weapon class, a natural element, and a role that shapes how they contribute in combat. Roles in Final Fantasy Resonance include Sentinel, Breaker, Medic, Commando, Synergist, and Saboteur. Characters fill the role their base kit was designed for, and you build on that with an equipped Vision.
None of the 8 characters are missable. They all join the party through story progression as you work through the game’s seven chapters. You cannot recruit them early or skip them.
For help figuring out how to build each character once you have them, our Final Fantasy Resonance Best Character Builds guide covers Visions, gear, and ability loadouts for all 8.
All Playable Characters in Final Fantasy Resonance
Rain — Sentinel
Chapter joined: Chapter 1 — Trailing the Truths
Weapon: Greatsword
Element: Fire
Armor: Heavy armor, Light armor
English VA: Clifford Chapin | Japanese VA: Nobuhiko Okamoto
Rain is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy Resonance and the first character you control. He is the commander of a Grandshelt airship squadron, sent to investigate the Earth Shrine after its seal begins to weaken. His personality is bold and impulsive — something his more serious childhood friend Lasswell is all too familiar with. Rain wields a Greatsword and is a natural Sentinel. Nearly every ability in his kit is built around taking hits for his allies, drawing enemy attention, and surviving the damage.
At Level 99, Rain has the highest HP (7,030) and Stamina (531) of any character in the game, making him the single most durable party member available. His Strength sits at 435 — third best overall. He is slow at Speed 300, which is fine for a tank. His Limit Bursts are Infinity Drive at Level 1, which deals Fire physical damage to a single enemy, and Crimson Onslaught at Level 25, a stronger Fire physical upgrade.
Rain’s starting gear is the Crimson Saber, Leather Armor, and Earrings of Health. His Companion Vision is Charlotte.
Lasswell — Breaker

Chapter joined: Chapter 1 — Trailing the Truths
Weapon: Katana
Element: Ice
Armor: Heavy armor, Light armor
English VA: Alejandro Saab | Japanese VA: Yusuke Kobayashi
Lasswell is Rain’s childhood friend and deputy commander. He was orphaned young and taken in by Rain’s family, which means he has grown up beside Rain his whole life — and has spent much of that time being pulled along by Rain’s impulsive decisions. He is serious and stoic where Rain is loud and headstrong, and their dynamic drives a significant portion of the story’s character moments.
In combat, Lasswell is a Breaker — specialized in pressuring the enemy stagger gauge and punishing Ice-type weaknesses. He has the highest Speed of the three starting characters, which means he acts first and builds the stagger gauge faster than Rain or Fina. His standout ability is Hone Senses, which boosts his skill damage by 40% and raises his critical rate by 20% for five turns. It defines how you play him in every serious fight — you set it up, then hit hard. His Limit Bursts are Null Moon at Level 1 (non-elemental physical damage that debuffs target’s stagger resistance) and Transient Rite at Level 25. His Companion Vision is Amelia.
Fina — Medic

Chapter joined: Chapter 1 — Trailing the Truths
Weapon: Bow
Element: Light
Armor: Robe, Light armor
English VA: Lizzie Freeman | Japanese VA: Akane Fujita
Fina is a mysterious young woman who appears from inside the Earth Crystal at the beginning of the game. She remembers nothing except her own name. She joins Rain and Lasswell immediately and is the only character in the party who can summon espers, making her a central figure in both the story and in battle. She fights with a Bow and deals Light magic damage. Her role is Medic — the only dedicated healer in the starting roster.
Fina’s Spirit stat (544 at Level 99) is the second highest of any character, which directly feeds into her healing power. Her Magic is also strong at 451. The key number tied to her kit is Sanctity — a stat that increases both her healing output and the power of her Light attacks simultaneously. Weapons and armor that raise Sanctity are worth prioritizing for her throughout the game.
She learns Curaga naturally at Level 35. Before that, running Leah as her Vision gives early access to Curaga through Mastery. Her Limit Bursts are Holy Ray at Level 1 (Light magic damage to all enemies, stagger power 25) and Radiant Restoration at Level 25, which heals and buffs the whole party. Companion Vision is Tronn.
Lid — Commando
Chapter joined: Chapter 2 — Eternal Blue
Weapon: Mechabo Hammer
Element: Earth
Armor: Light armor, Heavy armor
English VA: Elsie Lovelock | Japanese VA: Ayaka Ohashi
Lid is an airship engineer from Dirnado who joins the party in Chapter 2 after you visit her at Dilmagia’s shipyard. She fights alongside Mechabo — a mechanical chocobo she built herself. Her goal is to earn the title of “Cid,” which in this world is awarded to Dilmagia’s best engineer. She competes for the title alongside her brother.
In combat Lid is a Commando with Earth-based physical attacks. She is one of the stronger stagger contributors in the game thanks to her Mechabo-based ability kit. Her most unique non-combat ability is Mechabo Escape — a guaranteed escape from any random battle. That might sound minor, but in long dungeons where you want to push through without clearing every encounter, it saves a lot of time. Her Limit Burst is March of the Machines. She wears Light armor primarily, though she can equip Heavy armor as well. Starting gear is the Mechabo Hammer and Engineer’s Jacket.
Nichol — Synergist

Chapter joined: Chapter 3 — Wardens of the Aquapolis
Weapon: Rod
Element: Water
Armor: Robe, Light armor
English VA: Khoi Dao | Japanese VA: Tsubasa Yonaga
Nichol is an analytical strategist for the Olderion Federation. He comes from a family of Wardens of the Waters, the guardians of the Water Shrine, and carries the weight of that legacy into the story. He is calm and methodical — a contrast to Rain that the game plays on throughout their shared journey.
Nichol is the only Synergist character in the game. No Vision covers the Synergist role — it belongs to Nichol alone. His Formation abilities — Formation: Assail, Formation: Charge, Formation: Bulwark, Formation: Regroup — buff the whole party simultaneously rather than a single ally. Formation: Assail raises every character’s stagger power at once, which directly accelerates stagger phases across your entire lineup. Formation: Charge fills the Limit Burst gauge for all allies at the same time, enabling chained Limits far more frequently than any other setup allows.
He can also flex into a secondary healer role when needed. His Water magic gives him useful elemental coverage for enemies weak to Water. He is one of the most valuable characters in the game and very hard to leave out of harder content once you have him.
Jake — Commando

Chapter joined: Chapter 4 — Banner Oath
Weapon: Gun
Element: Wind
Armor: Light armor
English VA: Jonah Scott | Japanese VA: Yoshimasa Hosoya
Jake is the leader of the rebel army opposing the Empire of Zoldaad. On the surface he comes across as an easygoing womanizer — the kind of character who seems to be playing it loose right up until the moment the stakes go up. Under that he is genuinely devoted to freeing his people from the empire’s hold, and the story takes him seriously once you get past his first impression.
Jake fights with a Gun and deals Wind and Lightning physical damage. He joins in Chapter 4 during the events at the Rebel Hideout. His combat role is Commando, and what makes him different from other Commandos is his Luck mechanic. Coin Toss builds Luck stacks. Abilities like Gamble Shot and Glücksschmied scale directly with how much Luck he has accumulated. When the setup lands cleanly — Luck stacked high, Bravery active — Jake produces some of the highest burst damage numbers in the party. His inconsistency in fights where you do not have time to set up is the main reason he sits in B-tier overall. His best Vision is Aileen, which adds Earth and Ice coverage to fill the gaps in his elemental range. His Limit Burst is unlocked at level 25.
Archwitch Fina — Saboteur

Chapter joined: Chapter 5 — Scars of Time
Weapon: Rod
Element: Dark
Armor: Robe, Light armor
English VA: Corey Pettit | Japanese VA: Inori Minase
Archwitch Fina — also known as Dark Fina — is a mysterious woman who appears during a climactic moment in the story’s past, advancing toward the ruins of a castle determined to destroy what remains of its defending army. Her origins are deeply tied to the main story’s mysteries and to Fina herself, which the narrative reveals gradually across Chapters 5 through 7.
As a playable party member she is a Saboteur. She fights with a Rod and deals Dark magic damage, and her kit is built around debuffing enemies and hitting hard with Dark-element spells. Witching Hour, one of her key abilities learned at Level 6, increases all her attributes by 50% at the cost of nullifying white magic healing on herself — a trade that rewards aggressive play when Fina or Leah is covering healing from another slot. Dystopia at Level 22 deals Dark magic damage to all enemies and increases in power with each consecutive use. She is the best debuffer in the party, and against bosses where Deshell sticks, she multiplies the magic damage output of Sakura and Fina significantly.
Sakura — Commando

Chapter joined: Chapter 5 — Scars of Time
Weapon: Rod
Element: Lightning
Armor: Robe, Light armor
English VA: AmaLee | Japanese VA: Aoi Yuki
Sakura is a sage from Mysidia, the city of mages, and a powerful magic user whose mysterious origins connect to the Ice Crystal. She joins the party at the same chapter as Archwitch Fina and immediately becomes the strongest dedicated magic attacker in the roster.
Sakura’s natural element is Lightning, and her kit also covers Dark and Light magic damage. She wears Robes. Her Sanctity stat matters in the same way it does for Fina — it directly powers up her Light magic attacks. Her standout passive is Sage’s Eye, which raises her stagger power against the target by 50% for four turns whenever she uses magic of that enemy’s weakness. That passive rewards you for exploiting element weaknesses consistently, which is how the game’s stagger system is designed to work.
Her two Limit Bursts are the most versatile in the game. Eternal Veil at Level 1 activates a barrier on all allies that nullifies damage once — a party-wide shield button for incoming big hits. Sakura’s Ultima at Level 35 deals non-elemental magic damage to all enemies with stagger power 55, the highest in her kit. The fact that her Level 1 Limit is a defensive party tool while her Level 35 Limit is maximum offense shows how dual-purpose she is in practice.

- Highest Stamina: Rain (531) — #1 overall
- Highest Magic: Sakura — top magic attacker
- Highest Spirit: Fina (544) — #2 overall, feeds healing power

All Character Weapon Types and Elements
- Rain — Greatsword, Fire

If you look at that list, the 8 characters together cover all 8 major elements in the game — Fire, Ice, Light, Earth, Water, Wind, Dark, and Lightning — with one character anchoring each one. Chapters 6 and 7 do not add new party members — your full roster of 8 is assembled by the midpoint of Chapter 5. The rest of the game is about developing the characters you have.

Guest Characters and NPC Fighters
Alongside the 8 main party members, the game also features Charlotte as a guest fighter who joins your party temporarily during certain story sections. Charlotte is a knight of Grandshelt and a peer of Rain and Lasswell. She is a Sentinel-type fighter who uses Ice and Water attacks and has high durability. She is not a permanent party member, but she is strong enough that her guest appearances are genuinely useful rather than just story decorations.
Charlotte also appears as a Vision — she is one of the Brave Exvius characters available as an equippable Vision, not just a story NPC. Rain’s Companion Vision at character creation is Charlotte.
Character Roles Explained
Final Fantasy Resonance has five main combat roles. Each character is locked to the role their base kit covers, though their Vision can add abilities from a second role:
- Sentinel — Protects allies by drawing enemy attacks and surviving heavy hits. Rain is the only Sentinel in the main roster.
- Breaker — Pressures the enemy stagger gauge. Breaking enemies opens high-damage bonus phases. Lasswell is the primary Breaker, with many Visions providing stagger tools to other characters as well.
- Medic — Healing and status recovery. Fina is the only dedicated Medic in the party. Ayaka (Vision) or Leah (Vision) supplement this role.
- Commando — Offensive attackers. Lid, Jake, and Sakura all fill this role, each with different elements and damage types.
- Synergist — Party-wide buffs and speed control. Nichol is the only Synergist. No Vision covers this role — it exists only on Nichol.
- Saboteur — Enemy debuffs and disruption. Archwitch Fina is the main Saboteur. Amelia (Vision) is the only other source of debuff abilities.
Visions — The System That Extends Every Character’s Kit
Every character in Final Fantasy Resonance can equip one Vision. Visions are crystallized essences of legendary Final Fantasy heroes — one for each numbered title from Final Fantasy I through XVI, plus ten more tied to the Brave Exvius story. There are 26 Visions in total.
Equipping a Vision gives the character a new role, new active abilities, passive skills, additional elements, and a powerful Resonance attack. The abilities you master from Visions stay in your pool even after you swap to a different Vision, so early investment pays off over the whole game.
For a full ranked breakdown of every Vision from S-tier to C-tier, see our Final Fantasy Resonance Best Visions Tier List. For the complete list of where to find each Vision, check our Final Fantasy Resonance All Visions List.
Espers — Fina’s Summon System
Fina is the only party member who can summon espers. Espers fight alongside your party for three turns after being summoned, then deliver a powerful finishing move before disappearing. Confirmed espers include Carbuncle, Leviathan, Bahamut, Odin, Ramuh, Ifrit, Siren, and Titan. Each has elemental coverage and a different special move — for example, Siren’s Lunatic Voice deals Wind damage to all enemies and may inflict Sleep or Silence, while Ramuh’s Judgement Bolt deals Lightning damage to all enemies.
Espers are found and strengthened through story progression and side quests. They give Fina a burst-damage option that sits outside her normal turn structure — useful for punishing stagger windows or finishing off a boss phase before it resets.
Which Characters Should You Use?
If you are trying to figure out the best lineup to run, the short answer is Rain, Lasswell, Fina, and Nichol for general content. That party covers every role — tanking, stagger, healing, and party-wide buffs — without overlap. For bosses where maximum magic damage matters, swap Lasswell for Sakura. For fast stagger on a tough enemy, swap Rain for Lid or Jake.
The 8-character roster is designed so that no one is genuinely useless and every character has a context where they fit well. Even B-tier characters like Jake have specific fight types where their mechanics shine.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many playable characters are in Final Fantasy Resonance?
There are 8 playable characters — Rain, Lasswell, Fina, Lid, Nichol, Jake, Archwitch Fina, and Sakura. You can have 4 active in battle at once, with the other 4 in reserve.
Are any characters missable in Final Fantasy Resonance?
No. All 8 characters join through main story progression. None of them require side quests to unlock and none can be missed permanently.
Who is the best character in Final Fantasy Resonance?
Rain, Nichol, and Sakura are generally considered the strongest characters. Rain has the best HP and Stamina in the game. Nichol is the only Synergist and his Formation abilities benefit the entire party simultaneously. Sakura is the best magic damage dealer once she joins in Chapter 5. Fina is also essential as the party’s only dedicated Medic.
Who joins last in Final Fantasy Resonance?
Archwitch Fina and Sakura both join in Chapter 5 — the same chapter. They are the last two party members to join and your full roster of 8 is complete from that point onward.
What is Archwitch Fina’s role?
Archwitch Fina (also called Dark Fina) is a Saboteur. She deals Dark magic damage and focuses on debuffing enemies with abilities like Deshell and Dystopia. She is the best debuffer in the party and significantly boosts the magic damage output of other characters when her debuffs land.
Can you use Fina for damage or only healing?
Fina can be used for both. Her natural kit is healing-first with Bow-based Light magic damage. With Tronn as her Vision she becomes a hybrid healer-stagger attacker. With Terra as her Vision she shifts toward a more aggressive magic damage role while keeping her healing tools. Most players keep her in a healing-primary role throughout the story, but she is flexible enough to build differently if you want her to contribute more offensively.
Is Nichol worth using in Final Fantasy Resonance?
Yes — strongly. Nichol is the only Synergist in the game. His Formation: Assail raises every character’s stagger power at the same time, and Formation: Charge fills everyone’s Limit Burst gauge simultaneously. Both of those effects are available to no other character or Vision. He is very hard to bench in any content that requires careful management of stagger phases or Limit Burst timing.
