TL;DR
- Cactuar has high evasion โ basic attacks miss often. Use multi-hit skills to land damage reliably.
- It is weak to Ice and Water. Use those elements to deal heavy damage and fill the stagger gauge fast.
- It is immune to Earth. Earth attacks do nothing at all.
- Cactuar’s 1,000 Needles deals exactly 1,000 fixed damage to one character โ watch your HP.
- It will try to escape the battle after several turns. Kill it fast or stagger it first.
- Once staggered, Cactuar stops evading. Hit it hard during that window.
- It is immune to all status effects except Slow and Doom.
- Cactuar gives 220 MRP per kill (286 with a Stagger Finish Bonus). Great for farming Vision levels.
- Metal Cactuar gives 25,000 EXP but resists all elements and takes only 1 damage per hit.
Cactuar is one of the most iconic enemies in the Final Fantasy series, and Final Fantasy Resonance is no different. It looks harmless. It has low HP. Then it dodges half your attacks, fires 1,000 Needles at your best character, and runs away before you can finish it off. This guide covers every Cactuar variant in the game, where to find them, how to deal with their evasion, and the best way to farm them for MRP and EXP.
All Cactuar Variants in Final Fantasy Resonance
There are several Cactuar-type enemies in Final Fantasy Resonance, each appearing in a different chapter and region. Here is a quick overview:
- Minituar โ Level 9. Found in the Grandshelt Desert (north). Available from Chapter 1. Gives 40 MRP.
- Metal Minituar โ Level 18. Found in Dirnado (Continent of Wind). Available from Chapter 2. Gives 2,500 EXP and 90 MRP.
- Cactuar โ Level 30. Found in Dirnado and Zoldaad. Available from Chapter 2โ4. Gives 1,111 EXP, 1,111 Gil, and 220 MRP.
- Metal Cactuar โ Level 36. Found in Mysidia (Uncharted Land). Available from Chapter 5. Gives 25,000 EXP and 1,000 Gil.
- Gigantuar โ Level 40. Found in Gronoa and the island past Dragon’s Maw (Pharm). Gives 1,111 EXP, 1,111 Gil, and 600 MRP.
- Metal Gigantuar โ Level 52. Found on the island past Dragon’s Maw and in Crystal Tower. Gives 150,000 EXP.
This guide focuses on the standard Cactuar, with sections covering the Metal Cactuar and Gigantuar variants below. For more on all enemies in the game, see our Final Fantasy Resonance All Bosses List.
Cactuar Location in Final Fantasy Resonance
The Cactuar has no fixed spawn point โ it appears as a random encounter on the world map. There are two main areas to find it:
- Dirnado, the Continent of Wind โ Available from Chapter 2. Look near the Sanctum of the Onion Knight and the surrounding fields to the west.
- Zoldaad, the Empire of Fire โ Available from Chapter 4. Found in the southern desert area, south of the Weapons Factory and the Sanctum of Y’shtola.
Cactuars are rare encounters in both locations, so keep circling the area until one shows up. The Zoldaad southern desert is slightly better because the spawn rate is higher and you can combine Cactuar hunting with other quests in the area. Equip the Foe Attractor item to increase encounter rates and get fights rolling faster.
If you are trying to find all enemies and track your progress, check the Final Fantasy Resonance All Characters List and related guides for party planning around each region.
Cactuar Stats and Weaknesses
Here is everything you are dealing with when a Cactuar appears:
- Level: 30
- HP: 1,111
- Stagger Gauge: 150
- EXP: 1,111
- Gil: 1,111
- MRP: 220 (286 with Stagger Finish Bonus)
- Type: Plantoid
- Speed: 450 (very fast)
- Weaknesses: Ice and Water
- Immunity: Earth
- Status Immunity: Poison, Blind, Sleep, Silence, Paralysis, Confusion, Petrify, Charm, Berserk, Instant Death, Gravity, Strength Down, Stamina Down, Magic Down, Spirit Down
- Vulnerable to: Slow, Doom
- Item Drop: Healing Spring
- Steal: Mist Ether (common) / Magicite Shard (rare)
The low HP of 1,111 makes it look easy. But that high evasion and the escape timer mean you genuinely have to play smart to kill it before it runs off. Do not let the numbers fool you.
Cactuar Attacks in Final Fantasy Resonance
Cactuar does not have many moves, but the ones it has can catch you off guard if you are not ready:
- Bash โ A basic physical attack against one character. Low power (12). Not a big threat on its own.
- Needle โ A stronger single-target physical hit with Power 18. Hurts a little more than Bash but still manageable.
- 1,000 Needles โ This is the dangerous one. It deals exactly 1,000 fixed damage to one party member, ignoring all defense. It cannot be reduced by armor or defense buffs. Any character below 1,000 HP when this hits will go down. Keep your HP topped up before the Cactuar takes its turn.
- Escape โ Cactuar will attempt to flee after several turns. Once it decides to run, the window to kill it closes fast. Stagger it or finish it before this happens.
The 1,000 Needles attack is the reason you want to keep your whole party above 1,000 HP throughout the fight. Use Fina to top up HP between turns if needed. See the Fina Character Guide for the best healing setup to keep the team safe.
How to Beat Cactuar in Final Fantasy Resonance
Step 1: Use Multi-Hit Attacks to Get Through Evasion
This is the most important tip. Cactuar has very high evasion, which means regular single-hit attacks miss a lot. The way to get around that is by using skills that hit multiple times in one action. Even if the Cactuar dodges some of the hits, a 5-hit skill will likely land 2 or 3 of them. That is enough to deal damage and chip the stagger gauge down.
The best multi-hit skills to use against Cactuar are:
- Hibernal Fury โ Deals Ice magic damage to random enemies 5 times. Ice is Cactuar’s weakness, so this hits hard and fills the stagger gauge fast.
- Tranquility in Tumult (Lasswell) โ Hits 5 times with physical damage. It can miss some hits due to evasion, but you usually land 2 to 3 per cast. Still one of the better options Lasswell has early in the game.
- Barrage (Noctis) โ Unlocked at Level 9. Hits 4 times and is guaranteed to connect. This is one of the most reliable moves in the game against high-evasion enemies like Cactuar. If you have Noctis in your party, use this every turn.
Step 2: Hit Its Ice and Water Weakness
Cactuar is weak to Ice and Water. Both elements increase your damage and fill the stagger gauge much faster than neutral attacks. If you have Y’shtola’s Vision equipped, her Ice spells work very well here. Shiva as your Esper is also a strong pick for the Ice element. Avoid Earth attacks entirely โ Cactuar is immune to Earth and those skills do zero damage.
Ice-based multi-hit skills are the perfect solution since they bypass evasion with multiple rolls and hit the weakness at the same time. See the All Esper Locations guide if you need help finding Shiva or other elemental Espers.
Step 3: Stagger It Before It Escapes
Cactuar stops evading completely once its stagger gauge is broken. With a stagger gauge of only 150, Ice and Water multi-hit attacks drain it very fast. As soon as the stagger lands, hit Cactuar with your strongest skills. This also sets you up for the Stagger Finish Bonus: kill it while staggered to get 286 MRP instead of 220 MRP. That 30 percent bonus adds up quickly during farming runs.
Nichol’s Assail ability boosts stagger power for the whole party and makes the gauge go down even faster. If you are farming Cactuars often, bringing Nichol saves a lot of time. Check his full setup in the Best Character Builds guide.
Step 4: Watch Out for 1,000 Needles
Before every Cactuar turn, check your party’s HP. If anyone is sitting below 1,000 HP, heal them before the Cactuar acts. The 1,000 Needles move deals exactly 1,000 fixed damage with no reduction possible. Defense, armor, Shell โ none of it matters. The hit lands for 1,000 flat every time. Keep everyone above that threshold and you will not lose anyone to this attack.
If Fina is in your party, use her healing ability proactively rather than reactively. She should top up the team each time someone dips below 1,200 HP to give yourself a safety buffer.
Step 5: Steal Before Finishing
Before you land the final blow, try to steal from the Cactuar. The common steal is a Mist Ether, and the rare steal is a Magicite Shard. Magicite Shards are useful for awakening Visions, so they are worth grabbing when you can. Check the Magicite Shards Awaken Visions Guide for how to use those effectively.
Best Party Setup to Beat Cactuar
You do not need a super specialized party to handle Cactuar since its HP is low. But the right lineup makes farming runs much smoother and faster:
Lasswell (Breaker / Multi-Hit Damage)
Lasswell’s Tranquility in Tumult hits 5 times and has strong Ice skills that exploit the Cactuar’s weakness. He fills the stagger gauge fast and is one of the best all-around options for this fight. See the Lasswell Character Guide for his full skill setup.
Noctis or Rain (Multi-Hit Physical)
Noctis’s Barrage skill hits 4 times guaranteed, making it the most reliable physical option against high-evasion enemies. If you do not have Noctis at Level 9 yet, Rain can fill in with his high-HP tanky presence and assist with multi-hit physical skills. The Rain Character Guide covers his best builds for this kind of role.
Fina (Healer)
Fina keeps everyone above 1,000 HP so that 1,000 Needles does not knock anyone out. Essential for safety during farming runs. Her low-cost heals also let her contribute healing without burning MP too fast across multiple fights.
Sakura or Nichol (Support / Buff)
Sakura can contribute Ice or Water magic hits to complement the stagger push. Nichol’s Assail raises stagger power for the whole party, which is very helpful given Cactuar’s small stagger gauge โ you want to pop it fast and finish in the stagger window. For Sakura’s setup, see the Sakura Character Guide.

How to Beat Metal Cactuar in Final Fantasy Resonance
The Metal Cactuar is a different beast entirely. Here is what changes:
- Level: 36
- HP: 10 (Normal) | 6 (Casual) | 16 (Expert)
- Stagger Gauge: 975
- EXP: 25,000
- Gil: 1,000
- MRP: 90
- Weakness: None
- Resistances: All eight elements
- Passives: Nullify Physical, Nullify Magic, Physical Evasion, Magic Evasion
- Item Drop: Remedy
- Location: Mysidia, the Uncharted Land โ near Jotunn Cave (Chapter 5 onward)
Metal Cactuar has no elemental weakness, resists everything, and takes only 1 damage per hit regardless of what you throw at it. Elemental skills, magic, physical attacks โ they all deal 1. The only way through is volume. Hit it as many times as possible per turn before it runs away.
The best strategy is the same core idea as regular Cactuar: use multi-hit skills. Each hit lands for 1 damage, but with a 10 HP pool, 10 hits kills it. Noctis’s Barrage (4 guaranteed hits) and Lasswell’s Tranquility in Tumult (5 hits, some may miss) are your go-to tools. Use them on turn one. Do not waste turns on single-hit skills.
Metal Cactuar starts attempting to flee from its second or third action, and the escape chance increases each turn after that. So turn one is your best window. Open with every multi-hit skill you have and try to close out the 10 HP before it gets a chance to run.
The 25,000 EXP reward makes Metal Cactuar one of the best mid-game leveling targets in the entire game. The best farming zone is the area between Jotunn Cave and the Sanctum of Vaan in Mysidia, where roughly one in three fights is a Metal Cactuar.
How to Beat Gigantuar in Final Fantasy Resonance
The Gigantuar is the large version of Cactuar, found later in the game. It behaves similarly but hits harder and gives far more MRP:
- Level: 40
- HP: 11,111
- EXP: 1,111
- Gil: 1,111
- MRP: 600 per kill (780 with Stagger Finish Bonus)
- Weakness: Ice and Water (same as regular Cactuar)
- Location: Gronoa overworld (southwest), and the island past Dragon’s Maw in the Kingdom of Pharm
The same strategy applies: multi-hit Ice or Water attacks, stagger it as fast as possible to stop evasion, and kill it while staggered for the MRP bonus. The main difference is that Gigantuar has much more HP, so you need to sustain the fight a bit longer. Keep healing between rounds if 1,000 Needles brings anyone close to danger.
The island past Dragon’s Maw in the Kingdom of Pharm is the best place to fight Gigantuar. Every fight on that small island is one of three enemies: Gigantuar, Metal Gigantuar, or King Gil Snapper. That makes it the best combined farming spot in the game for EXP, MRP, and Gil. See our How to Beat King Gil Snapper guide if you want to make the most of that farming run.
Cactuar MRP Farming Tips
If you are farming Cactuars specifically for MRP to level up your Visions, these small adjustments make a real difference over many runs:
- Always finish while staggered. The Stagger Finish Bonus gives 1.3x MRP. That turns 220 MRP into 286 MRP per Cactuar and 600 MRP into 780 per Gigantuar. Do not waste it by landing the final hit after the stagger wears off.
- Play on Expert for a 1.5x MRP multiplier. Expert mode raises the base MRP reward by 50 percent. The Cactuar’s HP is still low, so the fight is manageable if your party is strong enough.
- Equip Victoria’s MRP Gain +50% passive. This stacks on top of Expert difficulty and the Stagger Finish Bonus. If you stack all three, your MRP per Cactuar kill can be very high. Check the Best Visions Tier List to see where Victoria ranks and how to unlock her.
- Equip the Foe Attractor. This raises your encounter rate on the world map, which means you find Cactuars faster instead of fighting other enemies first.
- Use multi-hit Ice skills to combine damage and stagger in one move. Skills like Hibernal Fury hit multiple times and exploit the weakness at the same time. You can stagger and finish a Cactuar in two turns this way without wasting actions on separate stagger and damage phases.
For the most efficient use of your Magicite Shards from Cactuar steals, see the Magicite Shards Awaken Visions Guide. And if you are building your party around Vision farming, the All Visions List gives you a full picture of what is worth leveling first.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do you find Cactuar in Final Fantasy Resonance?
Cactuar appears as a random encounter in two areas: the Dirnado continent (available from Chapter 2, near the Sanctum of the Onion Knight) and the southern desert of Zoldaad (from Chapter 4, south of the Weapons Factory). Both are world map encounters with low spawn rates, so keep walking until one shows up. Equip Foe Attractor to find them faster.
What is Cactuar weak to in Final Fantasy Resonance?
Cactuar is weak to Ice and Water. Use skills that deal Ice or Water damage to deal more damage and fill the stagger gauge faster. Avoid Earth attacks entirely โ Cactuar is immune to Earth and those hits do nothing.
How do I deal with Cactuar’s high evasion?
Use multi-hit attacks that strike several times in one action. Even if Cactuar dodges some hits, you will land others. Noctis’s Barrage (4 guaranteed hits at Level 9) and Lasswell’s Tranquility in Tumult (5 hits) are the best options. Staggering Cactuar also removes its evasion entirely, so landing the stagger makes the rest of the fight straightforward.
What does Cactuar’s 1,000 Needles attack do?
1,000 Needles deals exactly 1,000 fixed damage to one party member, ignoring all defense. It cannot be reduced by armor or Shell. Keep every party member above 1,000 HP before the Cactuar takes its turn to avoid a knockout.
How do I beat Metal Cactuar in Final Fantasy Resonance?
Metal Cactuar has only 10 HP but resists all elements and takes 1 damage per hit. The only way to beat it is with multi-hit skills that fire many times per turn. Noctis’s Barrage (4 guaranteed hits) and Lasswell’s 5-hit skills are the best options. Open with them immediately โ Metal Cactuar starts attempting to escape after a few turns, so you must end the fight quickly.
What rewards does Cactuar drop in Final Fantasy Resonance?
Regular Cactuar drops a Healing Spring and gives 220 MRP (286 with Stagger Finish Bonus), 1,111 EXP, and 1,111 Gil. You can steal a Mist Ether (common) or a Magicite Shard (rare) from it. Metal Cactuar drops a Remedy and gives 25,000 EXP.
What is the best way to farm MRP from Cactuars?
The best MRP farming setup is to play on Expert difficulty (1.5x MRP), always finish the fight with a Stagger Finish Bonus (1.3x MRP), and equip Victoria’s MRP Gain +50% passive. Stack all three and each Cactuar kill gives significantly more than the base 220 MRP. For higher MRP gains, progress to Gigantaurs in the Pharm region โ they give 600 MRP per kill with the same strategy.
Does Cactuar always run away?
Yes, Cactuar will attempt to escape using the Escape ability after several turns in battle. Staggering it first removes this threat since a staggered enemy cannot act. Focus on dropping the stagger gauge with Ice or Water multi-hit attacks on your first couple of turns, and the Cactuar will be locked in place before it gets the chance to flee.
