- Irradiated Containers are Ultra-rarity items hidden in Chemical Storage units around the Haneul Nuclear Reactor and in clinics across Hajin.
- You cannot open them on the spot โ they have a chemical residue and must be decontaminated first.
- Take the container to the HNR machine at the bottom of Reactor 02 and use the Process Radioactive Material prompt.
- Bring a Gas Mask, Hazmat Suit, and Radiation Blockers โ you will be in a radiation zone the entire time.
- The rewards include Legendary weapons, weapon manuals, Ultra blueprints, and Epic ingredients.
Irradiated Containers are some of the most exciting finds in MW4 DMZ. They look like a locked red crate and they sit there daring you to open them โ except you can’t, not yet. The item description literally says “must be decontaminated at the Haneul Nuclear Reactor.” So before you get any loot, you need to make a run into one of the most dangerous areas on the map. This guide walks you through exactly how to do it.
What Is the Irradiated Container in MW4 DMZ?
The Irradiated Container is an Ultra-rarity item in MW4 DMZ. That puts it at the top of the rarity ladder, above Legendary. When decontaminated and opened, it pays out top-tier gear โ things like Legendary weapon blueprints, Ultra weapon manuals, plate carriers, and high-value keys.
It is not a key and it is not a chest you find placed in the world. It is a portable loot item you pick up and carry in your backpack or secure slot. You bring it to the right machine, process it, and then it opens like a loot box right there on the floor.
Because of how strong the rewards can be, it is worth going out of your way to find one โ and worth planning a proper run before you try to open it.
Where to Find Irradiated Containers in MW4 DMZ
Irradiated Containers do not have a fixed spawn. They are rare loot inside Chemical Storage units, which are the yellow cabinets and green lockers found in specific buildings. You will not find one every run โ expect to search multiple locations before one appears.

Main Spawn Locations
- Haneul Nuclear Reactor (Reactor 01 and Reactor 02) โ The most reliable area. Chemical Storage containers are scattered throughout the reactor buildings and surrounding grounds. This is where most players find theirs.
- Clinics across Hajin โ Green clinic buildings sometimes have Chemical Storage units inside. Less consistent than the reactor, but worth checking if you are passing through.
- Fire Station storage rooms โ Yellow lockers in fire station storage areas have been confirmed as a spawn point. The Deadtown fire station is one that players have reported success with.
What to Look For
You are looking for yellow cabinets and green lockers labelled as Chemical Storage when you interact with them. Most buildings in the reactor zone have several. Open every one you see. The Irradiated Container looks distinct in your inventory โ it has the Ultra rarity indicator and the warning tooltip about chemical residue.
Because it is an Ultra item, drop rates are low. Some players run the reactor loop eight to ten times before finding one. Do not leave a Chemical Storage unit unchecked just because the first few were empty.
If you want to maximise your chances, pair this run with other content at the reactor. Check out the MW4 DMZ Silo Bunker locations or grab a Reactor DRC Locker Key while you are in the area.
What Gear to Bring Before You Go
The Haneul Nuclear Reactor is a radiation-active area. You will take continuous damage without the right protection, and a blue gas mask only lasts about a minute and a half in the radiation zone. Plan your loadout before you drop.
Essential Radiation Gear
- Gas Mask (Purple if possible) โ A purple-rarity gas mask lasts around three minutes in the radiation. A blue one burns through in about 90 seconds. You need at least one, ideally two.
- Hazmat Suit โ This is the big one. It significantly reduces radiation damage and lets you stay in the zone long enough to actually get the job done. See the MW4 DMZ Legendary Hazmat Suit locations guide for where to find one before your run.
- Radiation Blockers โ Found in medicine cabinets and first aid kits. Carry two or three as backup.
- Painkillers and Stims โ Extra healing goes a long way if your mask runs out before you expect it to.
- Backpack with a Secure Slot โ The Irradiated Container is an Ultra item. Store it in your secure slot so you do not lose it if you go down before reaching the machine.
You do not need a three-plate vest specifically, but being well-armoured helps. There are also AI enemies in and around the reactor, so bring a solid weapon. Check the best assault rifles in MW4 or the best SMGs ranked if you need a loadout idea. For a strong meta option, the Kastov 762 loadout performs well in close-to-mid range reactor hallways.

How to Open Irradiated Containers in MW4 DMZ
Once you have an Irradiated Container in your secure slot and the right radiation gear equipped, here is exactly what to do.
Step 1 โ Get to the Haneul Nuclear Reactor
Open your Tac Map and find the Haneul Nuclear Reactor in the northeast section of Hajin. You are heading specifically to Reactor 02, which is the building with the blown-open roof โ sometimes called the “breached reactor.” It sits on the northeast side of the reactor compound.
A fast infil point is through Operation Fallen Ember, which drops you near the reactor. You do not need to complete the story mission to use the machine. Once you land, approach the radiation zone carefully and put on your Hazmat Suit and Gas Mask before stepping inside the red zone.
Step 2 โ Enter Reactor 02 and Go Down
Head inside the breached Reactor 02 building. The decontamination machine you need is at the very bottom floor. Go all the way down โ past any enemies or hazards on the upper levels. The machine is on the ground floor inside the building, toward the lower interior area.
Keep an eye on your gas mask timer while moving down. If it runs out, pop a Radiation Blocker to buy more time. Enemies can also spawn inside the building, so move with purpose.
Step 3 โ Use the HNR Machine
At the bottom of Reactor 02 you will find a large processing machine โ players call it the HNR machine. Walk up to it and you will see an interaction prompt that reads “Process Radioactive Material.”
Interact with it to place the Irradiated Container inside. The machine will run a decontamination cycle. Wait for it to finish. Once it completes, the container opens right in front of you like a standard loot box.
Step 4 โ Loot and Extract
The decontaminated Irradiated Container drops its loot on the ground for you to pick up. Grab everything and get out. Radiation is still active, so do not linger.
If you have a Fulton Drop Marker, this is a good place to call in an extraction rather than running all the way back to an exfil point on foot.
What Loot Can You Get From Irradiated Containers?
The loot pool is not officially confirmed by Activision as of late October 2026, but player reports paint a clear picture of what to expect. The rewards are top shelf.
- Legendary and Ultra weapon blueprints โ Confirmed drops include an Ultra Warlord shotgun and a Nyx SMG blueprint.
- Weapon Manuals โ Useful for DMZ crafting and missions. A JOKR manual and a Kastov 762 manual have both been reported.
- High-value keys โ A Vault Armory key was confirmed in one opened container.
- Legendary plate carriers and parachutes โ Gear-level drops that are useful for future deployments.
- Epic Ingredients and Valuables โ Extra crafting materials and cash-value items round out the loot.
Not every container pays out the same way. Some lean toward weapons, others toward gear or keys. That is exactly why it is worth opening every Irradiated Container you find rather than saving them. Tips for Farming Irradiated Containers
Finding one container is great. Finding them consistently takes a bit of planning. Here are the things that actually help.
- Run a looping route through Chemical Storage units. Hit the reactor first, then work through any clinics and fire stations on your path. The more Chemical Storage units you open per deployment, the better your odds.
- Check yellow lockers and green lockers specifically. Other container types do not seem to drop Irradiated Containers. Focus on the ones the game labels as Chemical Storage when you interact with them.
- Always keep radiation gear in your stash. The worst situation is finding a container and then having nothing to safely open it with. Keep a spare Hazmat Suit and two gas masks in your stash so you are always ready.
- Use the secure slot every time. An Irradiated Container in a normal backpack slot is at risk. One bad death and you lose it. The secure slot keeps it safe regardless of what happens in the field.
- Pair your reactor run with other objectives. The Haneul Nuclear Reactor has a lot going on โ bosses, keys, DMZ orders. Make each run count by combining goals. Check the DMZ boss locations guide to see what else is worth doing nearby.

Is It Worth the Effort?
Yes. Running to Reactor 02 in full radiation gear just to open a single container sounds like a lot โ but the rewards justify it. A single container can net you an Ultra blueprint that would otherwise take dozens of hours to unlock, or a key that leads to even more high-value loot.
The challenge is part of what makes it rewarding. Not every player bothers with the radiation zone, which means less competition at the machine and more of the area to yourself once you get past the initial engagement.
