Serval Build Guide – Honkai Star Rail 4.3
Serval is one of the most beloved free characters in Honkai Star Rail — the rebellious guitar-shredding mechanic of Belobog and eldest sister of Gepard and Lynx. Obtainable for free from the game’s pre-registration milestones, she is a solid Lightning Erudition DPS who remains a useful unit with the right investment. In patch 4.3, she finds her best use case as a stack generator for The Herta and as a reliable early-to-mid game DPS. This Serval build guide covers everything — best Light Cones, Relics, stat priorities, team compositions, and Eidolons — to get the most out of her in the current patch.
TL;DR – Serval Build Summary (4.3)

Who Is Serval in Honkai Star Rail?
Serval is a 4-star character following the Path of Erudition with the Lightning element. She is the free-spirited eldest daughter of the Landau family — a trained mechanic who runs the Neverwinter Workshop in Belobog and performs rock shows whenever business slows down. Once a close friend of Cocolia, she chose her own path, and that path involves a lot of guitar riffs and electrical discharge.
On the battlefield, Serval revolves around Shock. She applies it via her Skill (80% base chance to enemies in Blast range), extends it indefinitely with her low-cost Ultimate, and exploits it through her Talent — which triggers Additional Lightning DMG on all Shocked enemies whenever she attacks. This Additional DMG fires even on Shocked enemies she did not directly hit, making it a powerful passive AoE damage source in fights where multiple enemies are Shocked.
In patch 4.3, Serval has two primary use cases. First, as a standalone Lightning DPS in general content and DoT teams. Second, and more distinctively, as a stack generator for The Herta — her frequent AoE hits and fast Ultimate cycling generate Sticker stacks for The Herta efficiently, making her a budget-friendly Erudition partner for players who do not have Argenti or Jade.
Serval Skills and Abilities
Basic ATK – Roaring Thunderclap
Deals Lightning DMG to a single target equal to a percentage of Serval’s ATK. Generates 20 Energy and 10 Toughness damage. At E1, also deals 60% of the Basic ATK’s DMG to a random adjacent enemy. Used as a filler when conserving Skill Points or when the team’s SP pool is low.
Skill – Lightning Flash
Deals Lightning Blast DMG to a primary target (up to 140% ATK at max level) and Lightning DMG to adjacent enemies (up to 60% ATK). Has an 80% base chance to apply Shock to all enemies hit for 2 turns. While Shocked, the enemy takes Lightning DoT equal to 104% ATK at the start of each of their turns. The A2 Trace increases this Shock application chance by a further 20%, bringing it to a more reliable 100% effective rate. This is Serval’s primary Shock application method and the action she wants to use most turns. Generates 30 Energy.
Ultimate – Here Comes the Mechanical Fever
Deals Lightning AoE DMG to all enemies equal to 180% ATK. Any enemies that are already Shocked have their Shock duration extended by 2 turns. This extension applies to all Shock sources — not just Serval’s own. Costs only 100 Energy — one of the lowest Ultimate costs of any 4-star character, enabling very frequent use. With the A4 Trace granting 15 Energy at battle start, Serval reaches her first Ultimate very quickly.
Talent – Galvanic Chords
After every attack Serval makes, she deals Additional Lightning DMG to all Shocked enemies equal to up to 72% ATK. The crucial detail: this Additional DMG fires on every Shocked enemy regardless of which enemy Serval directly attacked. If all five enemies in a Pure Fiction wave are Shocked and Serval uses her Basic ATK on one target, the Talent triggers on all five simultaneously. This passive AoE contribution is the core of Serval’s damage in multi-target content.
Technique – Good Night, Belobog
Immediately attacks a nearby enemy. Upon entering combat, deals Lightning DMG to a random enemy and has a 100% base chance to Shock all enemies for 2 turns. Always use this before combat — guaranteed Shock on the entire enemy lineup from turn one means the Talent fires on every enemy on Serval’s very first action.
Major Traces
- Rock ‘n’ Roll (A2): Increases the Skill’s base chance to Shock by 20% — bringing the total to 100% against most enemies. This is a critical quality-of-life improvement. The 80% base rate means Shock misses regularly without this trace, making the Talent unreliable. A2 effectively makes Shock application consistent and is the first trace to prioritise unlocking
- String Vibration (A4): Immediately regenerates 15 Energy at the start of battle. Combined with her 100 Energy cost Ultimate, this means Serval reaches her first Ultimate in roughly 3 turns instead of 4 in the opening wave. A meaningful head start on Shock extension uptime
- Mania (A6): Upon defeating an enemy, Serval’s ATK increases by 20% for 2 turns. Activates consistently in multi-wave Pure Fiction content where enemies die frequently. Provides a meaningful personal damage boost during wave clear windows
Serval Best Light Cones (4.3)
1. Night on the Milky Way (Best DPS Option)
Himeko‘s signature Light Cone is Serval’s best DPS choice when available. It stacks ATK% for every enemy on the field (up to 5 stacks for a significant bonus), and after the team inflicts Weakness Break, increases DMG dealt by the wearer for 1 turn. In multi-target content where Serval hits multiple enemies each turn, the ATK% stacks are almost always maxed. A strong choice in Pure Fiction and multi-wave Memory of Chaos.
2. An Instant Before A Gaze (DPS Alternative)
Argenti’s signature cone provides +36% CRIT DMG and scales Ultimate DMG based on Max Energy. At Serval’s 100 Max Energy, this adds a meaningful Ultimate DMG boost. A strong choice for players who have it and want to maximise Serval’s burst windows without relying on multi-target stacking.
3. Passkey (Battery Build for The Herta Teams)
Prydwen specifically identifies this as the Light Cone to use when Serval is playing as The Herta’s stack generator rather than a primary DPS. It provides Energy Regeneration Rate, dramatically accelerating Serval’s Ultimate cycling. Faster Ultimates mean more AoE Lightning hits per fight, generating more Sticker stacks for The Herta at the cost of Serval’s personal damage output. Use this specifically in The Herta compositions.
4. Geniuses’ Repose (Best 4-Star)
Provides ATK% and, after defeating an enemy, increases CRIT DMG by 24% for 3 turns. In content with frequent enemy deaths — Pure Fiction waves, multi-enemy Memory of Chaos — the CRIT DMG bonus applies consistently and stacks cleanly with Serval’s high action rate. At S5, this is a competitive and fully accessible 4-star choice.
5. Today Is Another Peaceful Day (4-Star Budget)
A Battle Pass cone that converts Max Energy into a DMG% bonus. At Serval’s 100 Energy cap, this provides a flat DMG% increase to all attacks. A workable budget option especially for players who have purchased Nameless Honor.
6. The Seriousness of Breakfast (4-Star F2P)
Purchasable from the Forgotten Hall reward store. Provides a DMG% bonus and ATK% from defeated enemies. A reliable fallback with no conditional requirements beyond killing enemies — easy to maintain in most combat scenarios.
Serval Best Relic Sets (4.3)
Pioneer Diver of Dead Waters (4-Piece) – Best DPS Option
The top relic set for Serval in 4.3 when she is playing as a primary DPS. The 2-piece gives +12% DMG against debuffed enemies — Shock counts as a debuff, so this activates whenever Serval attacks Shocked targets. The 4-piece gives +4% CRIT Rate and +8–12% CRIT DMG against enemies with 2 or more debuffs, doubled for 1 turn when Serval applies a new debuff. Serval applies Shock frequently and can pair with supports who add additional debuffs, making both the 2-debuff and 3-debuff thresholds achievable. Prydwen and Pocket Tactics both recommend this as her best overall set.
Band of Sizzling Thunder (4-Piece) – Best Reliable Option
The Lightning-focused relic set and a more forgiving alternative. The 2-piece gives +10% Lightning DMG. The 4-piece gives +6% SPD and +10% Basic ATK DMG after the wearer uses their Skill. In practice Serval uses her Skill frequently, so the SPD and ATK bonus activate on nearly every rotation. Charlie INTEL and dbltap both rate this as a competitive choice — it requires no specific debuff count and activates cleanly with Serval’s natural Skill-heavy playstyle. Slightly lower ceiling than Pioneer Diver in ideal conditions but more consistent when debuff count cannot be guaranteed.
Scholar Lost in Erudition (4-Piece) – The Herta Battery Build
The Erudition-focused relic set introduced in recent patches. The 2-piece gives +8% CRIT Rate. The 4-piece increases Skill and Ultimate DMG by 20% and adds a further +8% CRIT Rate after using the Ultimate. In The Herta compositions where Serval is cycling her Ultimate rapidly with Passkey, this set synergises naturally with her fast Ultimate loop — each Ultimate use triggers the CRIT Rate bonus for the next Skill hit. A strong set specifically for The Herta battery compositions.
Band of Sizzling Thunder (2) + Pioneer Diver of Dead Waters (2)
A clean transitional combination providing +10% Lightning DMG and +12% DMG against debuffed enemies. No conditional requirements beyond having Shock active — which Serval maintains reliably. Use this while farming for a complete 4-piece set.
Serval Best Planar Ornaments (4.3)
Firmament Frontline: Glamoth (Best DPS at 160 SPD)
Prydwen and Dexerto both rate this as Serval’s best DPS ornament when she can reach 160 SPD. It provides +12% ATK and a large DMG% bonus at 135 or 160 SPD — at 160, the full DMG% bonus activates. With SPD boots and substats, reaching 160 SPD is achievable. A committed investment that provides the highest damage ceiling in optimised builds.
Izumo Gensei and Takama Divine Realm (Erudition Team Option)
Provides CRIT Rate and an additional CRIT Rate bonus when two or more Erudition characters are on the team. In The Herta compositions where Serval and The Herta are both Erudition characters, the conditional is permanently active. A strong ornament for Erudition dual-character teams without the SPD requirement of Glamoth.
Space Sealing Station (Accessible Alternative)
ATK% with an additional bonus at 120 SPD. Serval’s base SPD is 104 — reaching 120 requires SPD boots or substats, which is easily achieved. A budget-friendly option that covers her ATK scaling without complex conditional requirements.
Pan-Cosmic Commercial Enterprise (Effect Hit Rate Build)
Provides +10% Effect Hit Rate and converts up to 25% of current EHR into ATK. Serval has +18% Effect Hit Rate from her minor traces — combining this with the ornament’s EHR and any EHR substats gives her a meaningful ATK bonus. Useful if your build needs more EHR to reliably hit the Shock application threshold in endgame content.
Serval Best Stats and Substats (4.3)
Main Stats
- Body: CRIT Rate
- Boots: SPD (aim for 135 minimum; push toward 160 for Glamoth)
- Planar Sphere (Orb): Lightning DMG Boost
- Link Rope: ATK% (standard DPS build) or Energy Regeneration Rate (The Herta battery build with Passkey)
Substat Priority
- CRIT Rate (aim for 60%+ — despite having DoT, Serval cares strongly about CRIT for her Talent and direct hits)
- CRIT DMG (aim for 140%+)
- ATK% and Flat ATK
- SPD (reach 135 at minimum; push to 160 for Glamoth bonus)
Prydwen’s review makes an important note: despite having a DoT component, Serval plays more like a traditional CRIT-based DPS than a pure DoT character. Her Talent’s Additional DMG is eligible for critical hits and represents a large share of her total output. This is why she wants CRIT Rate and CRIT DMG from gear rather than Effect Hit Rate stacking — Shock application is already reliable with the A2 Trace, making EHR over the base threshold a wasted stat. Focus CRIT stats and let Shock uptime be managed through frequent Skill and Ultimate usage.
Serval Best Team Compositions (4.3)
The Herta Battery Team: The Herta, Serval, Tribbie, Aventurine
Serval’s most meta-relevant role in 4.3 is as a budget Erudition partner for The Herta. The Herta’s Sticker system builds stacks whenever Erudition allies hit enemies — Serval’s frequent AoE hits from her Talent (which fires on all Shocked enemies every attack) and her 100-cost Ultimate cycling generate substantial Sticker stacks for The Herta’s enhanced attacks. Prydwen notes this is the one scenario where Serval is genuinely recommended in 4.3, specifically for players who need a free Erudition character alongside The Herta and lack Argenti or Jade. In this role, run Passkey Light Cone and Energy Regen rope for maximum Ultimate cycling speed rather than pure personal DPS.
DoT Team: Kafka, Serval, Black Swan/Ruan Mei, Gallagher
Kafka detonates Shock from Serval’s kit just as she does with any other DoT. Serval’s Ultimate-extended Shock means Kafka always has active DoT to re-trigger. Black Swan adds Arcana stacks on top, while Ruan Mei amplifies Break DMG and extends Weakness Break windows. Gallagher sustains. This is Serval’s strongest personal DPS context in a competitive team — she contributes her own Shock alongside Kafka’s forced DoT detonations.
General Erudition Team: Serval, Herta, Tribbie, Sustain
Without The Herta, pairing Serval with the standard 4-star Herta creates an accessible dual-Erudition setup. Herta’s follow-up attacks fire constantly in multi-target content when enemies are above 50% HP. Serval’s Shock + Talent coverage keeps Lightning DoT ticking on all targets. Tribbie adds universal RES PEN. A fully free-to-play friendly combination that covers AoE content cleanly.
Lightning-Weak Content: Serval + Any Two Supports + Sustain
In early-to-mid game content and story chapters on Jarilo-VI where Lightning-weak enemies are common — particularly the Silvermane Guards and automaton enemies — Serval is highly recommended. Game8 notes she is particularly advisable for players to invest in early given how many Lightning-weak foes appear in Belobog. She clears these encounters efficiently and remains relevant throughout the story arc.
Characters Who Pair Well With Serval
- The Herta – Primary partner in 4.3; Serval’s AoE hits generate Sticker stacks consistently
- Kafka – Detonates Serval’s Shock for burst damage; natural DoT team pairing
- Black Swan – Adds Arcana to complement Shock in DoT compositions
- Tribbie – Universal RES PEN and AoE follow-up damage; fits any Serval team
- Ruan Mei – Break support and DMG amplification; helps in DoT compositions
- Herta (4-star) – Follow-up attacks complement Serval’s AoE Shock DoT in budget Erudition builds
- Pela – Free DEF shred and a second debuff for Pioneer Diver’s 2-debuff threshold
- Gallagher – Natural DoT team sustain; Besotted applies a debuff feeding Pioneer Diver threshold
- Silver Wolf – Can implant Lightning Weakness and add a third debuff for Pioneer Diver’s full CRIT DMG bonus
Serval Eidolons – Are They Worth It?
Serval is a free character and accumulates Eidolons naturally as a standard banner unit. Her Eidolons are meaningful quality-of-life and damage improvements worth having.
E1 – Echo Chamber
Basic ATK deals Lightning DMG equal to 60% of the Basic ATK’s DMG to a random adjacent enemy. This turns her single-target Basic ATK into a minor Blast — useful in multi-enemy fights for spreading additional hits to adjacent targets and triggering the Talent on more Shocked enemies without using Skill Points. A clean and always-relevant improvement to her filler action.
E2 – Encore!
Every time Serval’s Talent triggers to deal Additional DMG, she regenerates 4 Energy. Since the Talent fires once per attack on all Shocked enemies, and Serval attacks every single turn, this provides 4 Energy per turn passively — dramatically accelerating her Ultimate cycling speed. In a 3-enemy fight with all enemies Shocked, the Talent triggers once per attack, granting 4 Energy every turn. A very strong E2 that significantly improves her rotation tightness.
E4 – Make Some Noise!
The Ultimate now has a 100% base chance to apply Shock to any enemies not currently Shocked. This is a major quality-of-life Eidolon that transforms the Ultimate from a pure extension tool into a Shock application tool as well. In fights with multiple enemies where Serval cannot always Skill all targets, the Ultimate now guarantees full-team Shock coverage on its own. This also makes E4 Serval significantly more reliable in 4-5 enemy scenarios where her Skill’s Blast range previously left some enemies unaffected.
E6 – This Song Rocks to Heaven!
Serval deals 30% more DMG to Shocked enemies. Since she almost always attacks Shocked enemies (her entire kit is built to keep them Shocked), this is effectively a permanent +30% DMG bonus to virtually every attack she makes. A very strong E6 that substantially raises her damage ceiling and makes her meaningfully competitive with other 4-star DPS characters at this investment level.
Recommended stopping point: E2 or E4. E0 Serval is fully functional for early game and story content. E2 dramatically improves her Energy economy and Ultimate cycling. E4 solves her multi-target Shock coverage problem in large enemy groups. E6 is a genuine power spike worth having if you accumulate it naturally.
Serval Rotation Guide
Serval’s rotation is straightforward:
- Use the Technique before every combat — 100% base chance to Shock all enemies at battle start. The Talent immediately fires on all Shocked enemies on Serval’s first action
- On the first turn, use the Skill to apply or extend Shock on the main target and adjacent enemies. The A2 Trace makes this 100% reliable against most enemies
- Use the Ultimate as soon as Energy reaches 100. It deals AoE Lightning DMG and extends Shock duration on all currently Shocked enemies by 2 turns — keeping the DoT active without re-applying. At E4, it also Shocks any enemies that were missed
- Continue alternating Skill (to maintain Shock and deal Blast DMG) and Basic ATK (to preserve SP while still triggering the Talent on all Shocked enemies)
- Cycle the Ultimate every 3–4 turns — the low 100 Energy cost with A4’s 15 Energy head start and E2’s 4 Energy per Talent trigger makes this highly achievable
- In The Herta battery builds: prioritise Ultimate frequency above all else — every Ultimate fires multiple AoE hits that generate Sticker stacks for The Herta, so the Passkey Light Cone and Energy Regen rope are essential
The golden rule for Serval: always have Shock active on every enemy before attacking. The Talent’s Additional DMG fires on all Shocked enemies regardless of who you directly hit — so Shock coverage determines how many enemies receive the bonus damage. One Basic ATK with all five enemies Shocked is five instances of Talent damage. One Basic ATK with no enemies Shocked is zero. Keep Shock rolling at all times.

Is Serval Worth Using in Patch 4.3?
In the right context, yes. Serval’s value in 4.3 is situational but genuine. Prydwen is candid: as a standalone endgame DPS she is only a decent option, and a bad solo carry in the most difficult content. Her damage ceiling is modest compared to limited 5-star alternatives, and she has real weaknesses — Shock application can be inconsistent in large groups at E0–E3, and her multi-target Shock coverage is limited to the Blast pattern of her Skill.
But in the two roles where she genuinely fits, she delivers. As a budget Erudition partner for The Herta, she is the best free option for players who need a second Erudition character and do not have Argenti or Jade — her fast Ultimate cycle makes her a consistent Sticker stack generator. In DoT compositions alongside Kafka, her Shock synergises directly with Kafka’s forced DoT detonation for solid combined output.
For newer and mid-game players, she is absolutely worth investing in. Prydwen recommends investing at least a little in her specifically because of how many Lightning-weak enemies appear throughout Belobog and beyond. She is free, she is accessible, and she does her job reliably with proper relic investment.
