The Darkhooves Grand Prix in Crimson Desert is the only Racing challenge in the game. You need to win 4 horse races in a row at the track beside Breesman Pasture in Demeniss. Each race gets harder as the AI brings a faster horse. Lose once and your streak resets to zero. This guide covers exactly how to win every race, what horse to use, and how to claim the Riding Attire reward.
- The race track is in Demeniss, north of the “I” in Demeniss on the map, beside Breesman Pasture.
- You must win 4 races in a row — a 3-race win streak plus beating the Champion.
- Each opponent brings a faster horse as your streak grows. The AI rubberbands heavily.
- The core strategy is tap X/A in 1-second intervals, hug the inner track, and block your opponent.
- Buy Horse Stimulants from a Saddlery before you start. Use them mid-race through your inventory when stamina runs low.
- The best horse for this challenge is the Legendary Royler, levelled to at least 4.
- Completing the challenge rewards the Riding Attire and counts toward the True Gamer trophy/achievement.
Darkhooves Grand Prix Location in Crimson Desert

The horse racing track is in the Demeniss region, beside Breesman Pasture. On the map, look north of the “I” in the word “Demeniss.” Speak to the race host by the stands to enter.
You need to unlock this location first. The Darkhooves Grand Prix becomes available after Demeniss is liberated, which happens in Chapter 10. Some players report needing to complete Chapter 8: Blood Coronation before the challenge activates. If the race host is not there, check your story progress.
How to Unlock the Darkhooves Grand Prix Challenge

The challenge sits under the Minigame category of the Challenges menu. To unlock it, you simply need to win your first horse race at the Demeniss track. Once you win one race, the Darkhooves Grand Prix challenge formally begins.
The challenge has two objectives:
- Have a win streak in horse racing x3 — win three races without losing.
- Beat the Champion — win the fourth race against the final opponent.
If you lose any race, your streak resets to zero. You do not lose progress on story quests, but you have to start the streak from scratch.

Best Horse for the Darkhooves Grand Prix
Your horse matters a lot here. The AI gets progressively faster, and by the fourth race the opponent’s mount is faster than any base-level horse at low level.
The best horse for this challenge is the Legendary Royler. It has the highest starting stamina and speed of all legendary horses in the game. Level it up to at least level 4 before you attempt the streak — do this by riding it and petting it regularly. See our all legendary horses locations guide to find Royler.
If you do not have Royler yet, any high-level legendary horse will work. Check our best horse and horse gear guide for your options. A strong non-legendary horse can still win, but the fourth race will be very tight.
For gear, equip Steelheart Horseshoes. They add stamina regeneration, which is the most useful stat for racing. Other horse gear mainly affects health and damage — useful in combat, not here.
Buy Horse Stimulants Before You Race
This step is critical and most players skip it. Horse Stimulants give your horse a burst of infinite stamina for a short time. Buy several from any Saddlery before you speak to the race host.
Use them during the race by opening your inventory, selecting your horse, and consuming the stimulant. There is an important catch: opening your inventory causes a brief pause, which means you lose a little speed and possibly your lead. Save the stimulant for the third lap when it matters most, and only use it if you are falling behind. Do not open inventory on a tight corner.
How to Win Every Race – The Block and Tap Method
This is the method that works most consistently across all four races.
Tap X/A in 1-Second Intervals
Do not hold the gallop button down. Holding it continuously drains stamina far too fast. Instead, tap X (Xbox) or Cross (PlayStation) every one second. This keeps your horse near full gallop speed without bottoming out the stamina bar.
If your stamina hits zero completely, your horse enters an exhausted animation that locks movement for about 3 seconds. That is race-ending in a close contest. Never let it empty fully.
Hug the Inner Track
Always ride the innermost line of the track. The Demeniss circuit has tight corners and elevation shifts. Taking a wide line adds real distance to your run and lets the AI cut inside you. Stay tight on every bend.
On the final corner specifically, you can cut slightly off-road to shorten your path. The game allows this. It is one of the most reliable ways to open a gap at the finish if the race is close going into the last turn.
Block Your Opponent
Use the left stick to physically block the path of your opponent. Position your horse directly in front of them and stay there. This is legal in the race and very effective. The AI has trouble overtaking when you sit on the racing line and prevent them from getting alongside.
Do not try to ram them hard or collide at speed — there is an anti-momentum effect when horses make contact. Just hold your position on the line and let them follow behind you.
Save Stamina for the Final Lap
Each race is 3 laps. Pace yourself through laps 1 and 2. Keep your stamina in the inner blue bar at minimum going into the final corner. Then sprint at full speed to the finish. This is when the race is won or lost — the AI tends to make its final push at the same time.
If you are running low on stamina entering lap 3, use a Horse Stimulant. That is exactly what they are for.
Movement Controls Setting – One Change That Helps
Before you race, go to Settings → Input → Movement Controls and switch to Classic mode. Several players report this makes horse control feel significantly more precise during the race, especially through tight corners. It is worth changing before your first attempt.
Why the Races Get Harder – Rubber Band AI Explained
The AI in the Darkhooves Grand Prix uses heavy rubber banding. You will never be able to lap your opponent or open a massive lead. The game keeps them close no matter how well you ride.
What this means practically: do not try to sprint away and coast. The opponent always closes the gap. Focus on consistent stamina management and track positioning rather than raw speed. Winning by a nose is fine — you still win.
By the fourth race, the Champion’s horse is faster than a base-level mount. This is why you need a high-level Royler or equivalent, and why the block-and-tap method matters so much. You are not going to outrun the Champion — you have to out-position them.
What Happens If You Lose
Your win streak resets to zero. You have to win 4 races in a row again from the beginning. You do not lose anything else — no items, no currency. Just time.
If you keep losing, check:
- Horse level — is it at least level 4?
- Are you holding the gallop button instead of tapping it?
- Are you taking wide lines through corners?
- Do you have Horse Stimulants ready?
Most failed streaks come down to stamina mismanagement on lap 3, not opponent speed.
Darkhooves Grand Prix Reward – Riding Attire
Beating all four races and the Champion earns you the Riding Attire. This is a full cosmetic armor set with a cowboy hat and spurs. Each piece also gives +1 Horse EXP Gain, which functions like a free Equestrian I Abyss Gear socket.
As of Update 1.06, the Riding Attire now supports standard Abyss Gear Sockets and is fully upgradeable. For the complete set including the Cloak and gloves, see our full Riding Outfit set guide.
You also receive the Crimson Hooved Banner as a separate reward for completing the challenge entry in the Challenges menu.
Completing the Darkhooves Grand Prix counts toward the True Gamer trophy and achievement, which requires finishing all Minigame sub-category challenges.
