TL;DR
- Harmonious Hooves 4 requires riding from Sunset Valley (bottom-left of the map, south of Mountain of Frozen Souls in Hernand) to Varnia (top-right of the map, north of Trader’s Expanse in the Crimson Desert) on horseback in 40 minutes.
- The Sealed Abyss Artifact is on a stone memorial on the side of the main road of the Mountain of Frozen Souls in Hernand — near a tree past the open field where you fight the Reed Devil.
- Dismounting at any point resets the challenge. Do not get off your horse for any reason until you reach Varnia.
- 40 minutes is generous — most players complete it in about 25 minutes with a decent horse.
- Best horse: Royler the Legendary White Horse, with Bond Level 5 for maximum speed and stamina.
- Buy Horse Tonics from the Saddlery in Hernand before starting for temporary infinite stamina.
- Stick to main roads — shortcuts across open fields risk elevation drops and obstacles that knock you off.
- Rewards: x1 Abyss Artifact, x1 Faded Abyss Artifact.
- Part of the 10-challenge Harmonious Hooves series — completing all 10 unlocks the Tamer of Legends Silver trophy/achievement.
Harmonious Hooves 4 is one of the most straightforward horse challenges in Crimson Desert when you know what it actually requires — but the scale of the ride surprises players who aren’t prepared. This is a cross-map journey on horseback with a single rule: don’t get off the horse. Everything else is just route management and stamina maintenance. This guide covers exactly where to find the artifact, the best horse and gear setup, the optimal route from Sunset Valley to Varnia, and every tip you need to complete it on the first attempt.

What Is Harmonious Hooves 4?
Harmonious Hooves 4 (also called Harmonious Hooves IV) is one of 10 Horse Mastery Challenges in Crimson Desert, listed under the Mastery — Goyen’s Advice category. The official in-game description reads: “Cut through the crimson sunset and let the sound of your hooves echo from Sunset Valley to the threshold of Varnia.”
The requirement is simple: ride from Sunset Valley to Varnia on horseback within 40 minutes, without dismounting at any point. Sunset Valley sits in the bottom-left corner of the entire map. Varnia sits in the top-right corner. This is the longest single horse journey any challenge in the game asks you to make — effectively a diagonal cross-map ride.
The challenge is part of the 10-challenge Harmonious Hooves series. Completing all 10 unlocks the Tamer of Legends Silver trophy on PlayStation and the equivalent achievement on Xbox and PC.

Sealed Abyss Artifact Location — How to Unlock Harmonious Hooves 4
The Sealed Abyss Artifact for Harmonious Hooves 4 is located on a stone memorial on the side of the main road of the Mountain of Frozen Souls in Hernand. More specifically: it is found next to a tree past the open field where you fight the Reed Devil, in the forest north of Sunset Valley. It also appears on the side of the road in the forest north of Sunset Valley at approximately 3,300 metres south of Hernand Town — directly beneath the “Mountain of Frozen Souls” label on the map.
Look for the purple scroll icon on your minimap as you travel along the main road through the Mountain of Frozen Souls area heading toward Sunset Valley. The artifact is on or adjacent to the road — you don’t need to venture off the path. Pick it up and the challenge immediately activates. Progress does not count before you pick up the artifact.
Once you have it, do not start the challenge run immediately. First, prepare your horse and consumables as described below. You can pick up the artifact and then take as long as you need to prepare before beginning the ride.
How to Prepare — Best Horse and Gear Setup
Get Your Horse to Bond Level 5
Bond Level is the relationship level between Kliff and your horse, and it directly affects your horse’s speed and stamina stats. Reach Bond Level 5 before attempting this challenge — it makes a noticeable difference in both how fast you can gallop and how long you can sustain it. Build bond by riding your horse regularly and petting it when prompted. See our horse guide for all the ways to increase bond quickly.
Best Horse — Royler the Legendary White Horse
The ideal horse for this challenge is Royler, the Legendary White Horse, which has the highest combined Speed and Stamina of any rideable mount in the game. Royler makes the Sunset Valley to Varnia run more forgiving on both time and stamina management. See our guide on legendary mounts and the full list of all legendary horse locations for how to find and tame Royler.
That said, any horse at Bond Level 5 can complete this challenge comfortably within the 40-minute time limit. The journey takes around 25 minutes with a well-bonded standard horse and even faster with a legendary one. Don’t feel obligated to delay until you have Royler — if you have a good horse already bonded to Level 5, go ahead.
Best Horse Gear
Equip the strongest horse gear available to you for this run. Horse gear directly improves your mount’s speed, stamina, and resilience. For the best options, see our dedicated guide on best horse and horse gear. In particular, the Steelheart Horse Shoes and Horse Plate Armor are strong picks for a long ride. You can also see our guide on every unlockable mount and vehicle for context on what’s available.
Buy Horse Tonics at the Hernand Saddlery
Before starting the run, stop at the Saddlery in Hernand Town and buy Horse Tonics. Horse Tonics grant your horse temporary infinite stamina, eliminating the risk of your horse slowing to a trot mid-ride when its stamina bar drains. Bring several so you can keep the effect active across the full journey. With Horse Tonics active, you can focus entirely on navigation rather than stamina management. See our guide on all stable locations to find the nearest saddlery if you’re not in Hernand Town.
Stock Food for Yourself
Enemy encounters along the route can chip away at Kliff’s health even while mounted. Carry a supply of healing food so you can restore health without dismounting if you take damage. Consuming food on horseback is safe — it doesn’t break the challenge. See our best healing food guide for what to prepare.

Where to Start — Sunset Valley Location
Sunset Valley is located in the very bottom-left corner of the entire game map, south of the Mountain of Frozen Souls in the southern part of Hernand. If you’re looking at the map, find the southernmost point of the Hernand region — Sunset Valley is at the edge of the playable area there.
To trigger the start of the challenge, travel to Sunset Valley and position yourself there. The challenge timer begins the moment you start riding north from Sunset Valley with the artifact in your inventory — the game recognises your starting position and begins tracking. Make sure you’re clearly inside Sunset Valley before sprinting off.
If you need to get to Varnia to access the fast travel point there first (to understand the route), see our guide on how to get to Varnia. Knowing the destination makes the navigation during the run much less stressful.
The Route — Sunset Valley to Varnia
The route covers the entire diagonal length of the Crimson Desert map — from the southern tip of Hernand in the southwest all the way to Varnia in the northeast, passing through Hernand, Demeniss, and the Crimson Desert region itself.
The golden rule: stick to the main roads the entire way. Do not cut across open fields, do not take shortcuts through forests or mountains, and do not try to find a faster diagonal path across terrain. The roads are the fastest and safest route for this challenge. Here’s why:
- Open fields and off-road terrain have unpredictable elevation changes, hidden drops, and obstacles that can knock you off your horse and instantly reset the challenge.
- The roads connect all three regions in a continuous network — they are designed to take you where you need to go efficiently.
- Enemies on roads are easier to see and avoid. Off-road enemies can ambush you from unexpected angles.
General route direction:
- Start at Sunset Valley and ride north through southern Hernand.
- Continue north through Hernand Town and the central Hernand region.
- Cross into Demeniss and follow the main road northeast.
- Enter the Crimson Desert region and follow the Salt Road northeast toward Varnia.
- Reach Varnia at the far northeastern edge of the map to complete the challenge.
You’ll pass through familiar regions from the story — the route naturally follows the main arteries of the map that you’ve used during questing. If you’ve been playing through the story in order, this path will feel recognisable. The main road through the Crimson Desert region (the Salt Road) runs in a clear northeasterly direction toward Varnia — follow it from where you enter the region.
How to Complete the Ride — Key Rules and Tips
The Most Important Rule: Never Dismount
Getting off your horse at any point completely resets the challenge. This includes:
- Pressing the dismount button voluntarily
- Being knocked off by enemy attacks
- Falling off your horse due to terrain drops or collision
- Your horse bucking from taking too much damage
If any of these happen, the challenge counter resets to zero and you must start again from Sunset Valley. This is the most common cause of failure — not running out of time, but an unexpected combat encounter knocking you off mid-route.
Managing Your Sprint — Don’t Drain Stamina to Zero
Sprint (tap X/A to maintain sprint) is faster than a gallop but drains horse stamina. If you drain stamina completely, your horse slows to a walk and takes several seconds to recover. On a 40-minute challenge, losing 30–60 seconds at a slow trot multiple times adds up.
The best approach is a managed sprint:
- Sprint on clear, flat road sections with no enemies nearby.
- Drop to gallop when approaching enemy camps, narrow sections, or uncertain terrain — lower speed but still fast, and less likely to result in a collision or knockoff.
- Keep one-quarter of the stamina bar in reserve so you can always react to sudden threats without losing the sprint entirely.
- If you bought Horse Tonics, use them proactively rather than waiting for the stamina bar to run low. Apply one before you enter areas you know have lots of enemies.
Avoid Enemy Encounters — Ride Around, Not Through
Enemy groups along the road are your greatest threat. A single hit from an enemy can knock you off your horse and reset the entire challenge. Here is how to handle the main danger zones:
- Bandit camps near the road: These are fixed positions. Ride wide around them on the road — don’t cut through the middle of any camp during the run. If a camp is directly on the road, sprint past it at maximum speed rather than fighting.
- Wolf packs and hostile wildlife: Animals can chase and bite your horse. If you see wolves or other hostile creatures near the road, accelerate and sprint past before they can catch you.
- Enemy patrol groups: Some patrols walk along roads. They will aggro if you ride into them. Steer slightly to the side and sprint past.
- Large open hostile zones: Some sections of the map have densely populated enemy areas (particularly in Demeniss and the Crimson Desert region). Stay on the road through these and maintain maximum speed — don’t slow down to engage anything.
If an enemy encounter is unavoidable and you take hits, consume food from your quick slot immediately while riding to restore health. Do not stop to fight — keep moving.
Managing the Timer — How Long This Actually Takes
The 40-minute time limit is genuinely generous. Most players complete this ride in around 25 minutes with a Bond Level 5 horse, even without a legendary mount. That means you have roughly 15 minutes of buffer even at a casual pace. Time is almost never the reason for failure — dismounting is.
You don’t need to sprint every single second. Riding at a consistent gallop rather than a max sprint the whole way is actually safer because it keeps your stamina healthier and gives you more control in unexpected situations. Manage the ride like a long journey, not a race.
What Counts as Reaching Varnia
The challenge completes when you enter the Varnia area at the northeastern edge of the map. You don’t need to reach any specific NPC or building — simply arriving in Varnia on horseback triggers the completion. The challenge prompt will indicate completion on screen.
Once the completion notification appears, you can safely dismount. Stand still, sheathe your weapons, and use the Sealed Abyss Artifact from your inventory to collect your rewards.
What to Do If the Challenge Resets
If you get knocked off your horse or accidentally dismount, the challenge counter resets. You’ll need to return to Sunset Valley and begin the ride again. Don’t be discouraged — the journey itself takes 25 minutes, and the reset just means another attempt from the start. Here’s how to avoid the most common reset causes:
- Knocked off by enemies: Plan ahead. Before the run, ride the route once without the challenge active and note exactly which areas have aggressive enemies near the road. Clear those camps beforehand if possible, or identify precise spots to ride wide around them.
- Fell off terrain: Stick to paved roads and avoid the temptation to shortcut across hilly terrain. The extra few seconds saved by cutting a corner are never worth the risk of a fall.
- Horse bucked from damage: Keep your horse’s health topped up with Horse Tonics and avoid prolonged enemy contact. If your horse’s health gets very low, it bucks and throws you — use Horse Tonics proactively.
- Accidentally pressed dismount: Be conscious of your button presses near enemies. The same button used to interact with objects also dismounts you when near your horse. Keep moving rather than stopping near anything interactable.

Final Thoughts
Harmonious Hooves 4 looks intimidating because of the raw distance involved, but it’s genuinely one of the less stressful challenges in the Mastery category once you understand the rule. The 40-minute time limit is so forgiving that speed barely matters — stamina management and staying on your horse are the only things that count.
Get your horse to Bond Level 5, stock up on Horse Tonics from the Hernand Saddlery, and ride the main roads the entire way. Don’t sprint every second, don’t take shortcuts across terrain, and don’t engage enemies under any circumstances. Keep moving with purpose and you’ll reach Varnia with minutes to spare on your very first clean attempt.
