How to Get the Chainsaw in Crimson Desert

Learn how to get the Demenissian Chainsaw in Crimson Desert — complete the Dewhaven Keep research, unlock the Steelspike Armory dispatch, and use it to farm Timber and Flawless Timber fast.

TL;DR

  • The Chainsaw (Demenissian Chainsaw) is only available after Chapter 10 of the main story.
  • Head to Dewhaven Keep in Delesyia and give the lead researcher 1x Diamond to unlock the research menu.
  • Complete Dewhaven Keep Facility Research first, then unlock Electricity – Movement Conversion Mechanism Research for 9 Silver (6 hours).
  • Go to Ross at Howling Hill Camp and send the Steelspike Armory: Chainsaw Production dispatch mission.
  • You must visit the Steelspike Armory in person before the dispatch will appear.
  • Collect the Demenissian Chainsaw from your Private Storage chest in the camp tent.
  • The Chainsaw has no durability — it will never break.
  • Upgrade it to +6 or higher to unlock Expert Logging Mastery and farm Flawless Timber.

The Demenissian Chainsaw is one of the best tools you can get in Crimson Desert. It tears through trees almost instantly, auto-collects Timber into your inventory, and at higher upgrade levels, it is the only reliable way to farm Flawless Timber. The process to get it involves Dewhaven Keep research and a dispatch mission, and a few steps that the game does not explain clearly. This guide walks through every step from start to finish.

What Is the Demenissian Chainsaw?

The Demenissian Chainsaw is a one-handed weapon and logging tool in Crimson Desert. It was developed by the engineers of Dewhaven Keep in Delesyia using electrical technology. In terms of combat, it is not particularly powerful — but that is not why you want it. Its real value is in logging.

Here is a quick stat summary:

  • Type: One-Handed Weapon / Logging Tool
  • Primary Use: Felling trees and auto-collecting Timber and Flawless Timber
  • Durability: None — it never breaks
  • Abyss Gear Slots: 5 slots available
  • Best Abyss Gears: Use ones that increase Timber yield — do not waste combat-focused Abyss Gears here
  • Flawless Timber: Requires upgrading to +6 or higher to unlock Expert Logging Mastery

Unlike the Magic Scythe which breaks after around 15 uses and needs to be re-dispatched, the Chainsaw is a permanent tool once you have it. This is a major quality-of-life advantage for anyone doing serious logging runs.

Requirements Before You Can Get the Chainsaw

There are a few gates you need to clear before the Chainsaw becomes available:

  • Complete Chapter 10 of the Main Story — The Dewhaven Keep research tree does not appear before this point. Some sources indicate the gate may be Chapter 11 or 12 depending on your progression path. If Heinrik’s research menu is empty, keep advancing the main story.
  • Reach Delesyia — The entire process takes place in the Delesyia region, which opens up in the later chapters of the game.
  • Have 1x Diamond — This is required to unlock the Dewhaven research menu. More on where to find one below.
  • Have enough Silver — The research itself only costs 9 Silver, but getting to it requires completing Dewhaven Keep Facility Research first.

How to Get a Diamond to Unlock Dewhaven Research

Before Heinrik at Dewhaven Keep will open his research menu, you need to hand him 1x Diamond. Diamonds are rare mining drops found in deep cave deposits across Pywel.

Two reliable sources to check early on:

  • Hernand Highlands Cavern — located southeast of Howling Hill Camp. This is one of the more accessible cave deposits in the earlier parts of the game.
  • Cave south of Serkis Estate — near the Greymane Camp. Worth checking if you are already in the area.

If you are struggling to find Diamonds through mining, check vendor inventories in late-game areas. Some vendors carry them after significant story progress. Our guide on how to get Diamonds covers all the locations in detail. Once you have your Diamond, travel to Dewhaven Keep and hand it to Heinrik to open the full research project list.

Important: Dewhaven Keep is in a hostile area. Guards in Delesyia are often aggressive toward outsiders even after you have helped liberate parts of the region. If soldiers attack on sight, equip a Disguise Cloak (head slot) and a Camouflage Outfit (body armor) together — using both pieces at the same time makes the disguise significantly more effective. Also, do not start any fights near Heinrik. If combat breaks out too close to him, he will flee and you will have to fast-travel away and back to reset him.

How to Get the Chainsaw – Step by Step

Step 1 – Complete Dewhaven Keep Facility Research

After handing Heinrik your Diamond, his research menu opens. The first thing you need to unlock is the Dewhaven Keep Facility Research. This is the foundation project and must be completed before anything else in the Dewhaven tree becomes available.

You can check every prerequisite for any Dewhaven research project at any time by selecting the “Ironwheel of Dewhaven” tab in the Delesyia Faction Quests menu. This shows you clearly what needs to be done before each unlock.

Step 2 – Unlock Electricity – Movement Conversion Mechanism Research

Once the Facility Research is done, you can now unlock the key project: Electricity – Movement Conversion Mechanism Research. This is listed as project 1A in the Dewhaven research tree. Here are the details:

  • Cost: 9 Silver
  • Duration: 6 hours
  • Reward: Unlocks dispatch missions to craft the Chainsaw (also referred to as the Lightning Saw in some menus), plus gives a passive increase to Timber gathered while logging

Start the research and wait out the 6 hours. You can advance the day-night cycle by sleeping at campfires or resting at your camp to speed the process up. Use this time to farm resources, explore, or tackle other quests in Delesyia.

Step 3 – Visit the Steelspike Armory in Person

This is the step that catches a lot of players out. After the research completes, many players go straight to Ross at Howling Hill Camp to start the dispatch — and find the mission is not available. This happens because the game requires you to have physically visited the Steelspike Armory before the dispatch will appear.

The Steelspike Armory is located north of Dewhaven Keep in the Delesyia highlands. Travel there and enter the zone until the “Area Discovered” prompt appears on screen. You do not need to clear the enemies there. Just discovering the location is enough to unlock the dispatch mission.

Step 4 – Send the Chainsaw Production Dispatch from Ross

Now head back to Howling Hill Camp and speak to Ross. In the dispatch mission menu, look for:

Mission Dispatch: Delesyia – Steelspike Armory – Chainsaw Production

Select this mission and assign your Greymane comrades to it. The mission requires committing crew members for the duration, so they will be unavailable for other dispatches while this runs. The timer takes a couple of hours in real time to complete.

If you need more comrades or want to know how to level them up for better dispatch results, check out our guides on how to get comrades and how to level up comrades. You can also run large-scale expeditions for extra camp rewards while the Chainsaw dispatch is running.

Step 5 – Collect the Chainsaw from Private Storage

Once the dispatch timer finishes, return to Howling Hill Camp. Head inside the main tent and open your Private Storage chest. The Demenissian Chainsaw will be waiting inside. Take it from the chest — it will not appear in your inventory automatically.

You can repeat this exact same dispatch mission as many times as you like. However, since the Chainsaw has no durability and never breaks, you typically only need one. There is no reason to craft multiple unless you want one as a backup in case you accidentally sell it.

How to Use the Chainsaw for Logging

With the Demenissian Chainsaw in your inventory, equip it in your One-Handed Weapon slot. Walk up to any tree and Kliff will use a unique revving animation that shreds through the wood almost instantly. Everything harvestable — Timber and Fine Timber — gets auto-looted directly into your inventory. No picking items up from the ground.

This is a massive upgrade over swinging a standard Logging Axe repeatedly. Dense forest areas that used to take several minutes to clear can now be done in seconds per tree.

Getting Flawless Timber with the Chainsaw

Here is one thing that catches players off guard: just having the Chainsaw is not enough to get Flawless Timber. The item description for Flawless Timber states it requires Artisan tools. With a base-level Chainsaw, you will only get Normal Timber and Fine Timber.

To unlock Flawless Timber drops, you need to upgrade the Chainsaw to +6 or higher using the standard reinforcement system. At +6, your character sheet will show Expert Logging Mastery — this is the threshold that unlocks Flawless Timber as a possible drop. The jump from +5 to +6 is the most important upgrade step for loggers.

Upgrading to +6 also increases the chance to receive bonus Timber on each chop. Below +6, you have roughly a 10% bonus chance. At +6 and above, that bumps up to around 50%, which makes a significant difference over long logging sessions.

You can also add gem slots to your upgraded Chainsaw through the refinement system to stack even more logging bonuses on top. For the full breakdown on upgrading gear, check our equipment reinforcement guide.

If you are not ready to upgrade the Chainsaw yet and still need Flawless Timber, some vendors in Delesyia — including the Provisioner’s Shop in Timberton — will sell it after enough story progress. Check our guide on when merchant shops restock so you do not miss their inventory windows.

Chainsaw vs Logging Axe – Is It Worth It?

If you do any serious amount of crafting, camp building, or resource gathering, the answer is yes. The Chainsaw is worth every step of the process. Here is the comparison at a glance:

  • Standard Logging Axe: Multiple hits per tree, manual loot pickup, yields Normal and Fine Timber only, has durability and breaks
  • Olvald’s Logging Axe: Stronger than a basic axe, 20% bonus Timber chance, requires a hidden blueprint — check our Olvald’s Logging Axe guide
  • Demenissian Chainsaw: Near-instant tree destruction, auto-loots everything, no durability, yields Normal and Flawless Timber at +6, repeatable dispatch for extras

The Chainsaw completely changes how logging feels in the late game. If you are still working through mid-game content, Olvald’s Logging Axe is a solid stop-gap. But once you reach Delesyia and complete Chapter 10, making the Chainsaw your priority is the right call.

Tips and Common Issues

  • Dispatch not showing up? You have almost certainly not visited the Steelspike Armory in person yet. Travel there and trigger the Area Discovered prompt before returning to Ross.
  • Heinrik disappeared? A fight broke out too close to him. Fast-travel away from Dewhaven Keep and fast-travel back to reset his position.
  • Research menu is empty? You likely have not reached Chapter 10 yet, or you have not given Heinrik the Diamond to unlock his project list.
  • Not getting Flawless Timber? Check your character sheet — if it does not show Expert Logging Mastery, your Chainsaw is not upgraded to +6 yet. Upgrade it further before logging.
  • Chainsaw sold by accident? Simply run the Steelspike Armory dispatch mission again. You do not need to redo any research. The dispatch can be repeated as many times as needed.
