How to Get the Magic Scythe and Rubber in Crimson Desert

Learn how to get the Magic Scythe in Crimson Desert through Pororin Research and dispatch missions, plus all the best methods to farm Rubber fast.

TL;DR

  • The Magic Scythe is not found in the world — you get it through a Pororin Research dispatch mission.
  • You must first unlock Pororin via The Unreachable Village quest.
  • Complete three research projects in order: Natural Harmony → Palmar Leaf → Plant Combination, then unlock Secret Tools of Life for 500 Silver.
  • After research, go to Ross at Howling Hill Camp and send the Florindale “Magic Scythe Production” dispatch. It takes 4 hours.
  • Collect the scythe from your Private Storage chest in your camp tent.
  • The scythe has limited durability — repeat the dispatch to keep a supply.
  • Rubber is best farmed from Rubber Trees in Beardtree Gorge using the Magic Scythe, or by gifting Thin Hides to troll scholars at the Scholastone Institute.

The Magic Scythe is one of the most useful tools in Crimson Desert. It lets you harvest plants, flowers, and herbs across a wide area in one single swing instead of picking them up one by one. It is also the best tool for farming Rubber, which is a rare material that most players struggle to find. This guide walks you through exactly how to unlock and get the Magic Scythe, and then covers every method to farm Rubber once you have it.

What Is the Magic Scythe in Crimson Desert?

The Magic Scythe is a unique tool and two-handed weapon in Crimson Desert. It was developed by the scholars of Pororin after studying how a Shai’s flower-finding spell accidentally enchanted a basket. The result is a scythe that reacts to nature and sweeps up everything harvestable in its range with a single hit.

Here is a quick breakdown of what it does:

  • Primary Use: Wide-area harvesting of plants, flowers, and herbs in one swing
  • Best For: Farming flowers, crops, and Rubber from Rubber Trees
  • Base Attack: 5 at Refinement Lv. 0, scaling to 8+ when refined
  • Durability: Around 15+ uses before it breaks — it cannot be repaired
  • Combat Use: Weak as a combat weapon; use it only for gathering
  • Usable By: Kliff and Oongka

The Magic Scythe is considered one of the best quality-of-life tools in the game. If you spend a lot of time gathering materials for crafting, alchemy, or quests, this tool cuts your farming time down significantly.

Note: the Magic Scythe does not work on Palmar Leaves specifically. For those, you will want to use the Kuku Gardening Pack instead. You can check out our guide on Refined Palmar Pills for more on that.

How to Get the Magic Scythe in Crimson Desert

The Magic Scythe is not found in the open world, dropped by enemies, or sold in any shop. The only way to get it is through a camp dispatch mission — but first, you need to complete some research at the Pororin Research Institute.

Step 1 – Unlock Pororin via The Unreachable Village

Before you can access any Pororin research, you must first unlock the Pororin faction. Do this by completing The Unreachable Village, a short Faction Quest available in Hernand. Check out our Unreachable Village quest guide if you need help with it. Once Pororin is unlocked, you will have access to the Poriron Research Institute at the Petalton Workshop.

Step 2 – Complete the Required Research Chain

The Magic Scythe research is locked behind a chain of earlier projects. You cannot jump straight to it. Here is the order you need to follow at the Pororin Research Institute:

  • Natural Harmony Research — Complete this first. Costs 1.10 Silver. Rewards the Shadowleaf Disguise Blueprint and an infinite arrow supply.
  • Palmar Leaf Research — Complete second. Costs 9 Silver and takes 6 hours. Reveals Palmar Leaf gathering locations.
  • Plant Combination Research — Complete third. Costs 120 Silver and takes 18 hours. Unlocks alchemy formulas for Freya’s Elixir, Meliara’s Elixir, and Haiden’s Elixir.
  • Secret Tools of Life – Pororin Research — This is the one you need. Costs 500 Silver and takes 1 day and 4 hours. Unlocks dispatch missions to craft the Magic Scythe and the Pororin Fishing Rod.

You can check the prerequisites for any Pororin research at any time by heading to the Pororin Forest Guardnas Faction Quest in Hernand. This shows you exactly what needs to be done before unlocking the next step.

The Secret Tools of Life research is the most expensive in the entire Pororin region. If Silver is tight, make sure you have a solid income going before spending on it. Our guide on how to make money fast in Crimson Desert can help you build up funds quickly.

Step 3 – Send the Dispatch Mission at Howling Hill

Once the Secret Tools of Life research is complete, the research alone does not give you the scythe. You still need to produce it through a dispatch mission. Here is how:

  • Go to Howling Hill Camp and speak to Ross.
  • Open the Dispatch Mission menu and look for the Florindale “Magic Scythe Production” mission.
  • The mission shares its location icon with the “Slim Water Bottle Crafting” mission in Florindale — look for the pot and cog icons on the map if you are having trouble finding it.
  • Assign a Greymane comrade (an Engineer type works best) and send the dispatch.
  • Wait 4 hours for the mission to complete.

If you need help getting comrades set up for dispatches, our guide on how to get comrades and how to level them up will help. You can also check out the large-scale expeditions guide for more on the dispatch system.

Step 4 – Collect the Magic Scythe from Private Storage

After the 4-hour timer finishes, return to Howling Hill Camp. Head to the Private Storage chest inside your personal tent and collect the Magic Scythe from there. It will not show up in your inventory automatically — you have to grab it from the chest.

Since the Magic Scythe breaks after around 15 to 20 uses and cannot be repaired, it is a smart idea to keep the dispatch mission running in the background. That way you always have a fresh one ready when the current one breaks. If you accidentally sell or lose it, just run the same dispatch again — you do not need to redo any research.

How to Use the Magic Scythe to Farm Rubber

Once you have the Magic Scythe in hand, the best use for it is harvesting Rubber from Rubber Trees. Standard axes and logging tools will not work properly on Rubber Trees — they destroy the rubber nodes instead of harvesting them. The Magic Scythe is the correct tool for the job.

Rubber Trees are found in Beardtree Gorge, located northeast of Delesyia. Look for trees with greyish bark and glowing amber sap — those are your targets. Walk up to a Rubber Tree, equip the Magic Scythe from your Two-Handed Weapons slot, and hit the tree. One clean strike is enough to harvest all available Rubber from it.

After harvesting, the tree enters a cooldown of around six in-game days before it can produce Rubber again. Because of this cooldown, you should not rely on wild trees alone. The sections below cover the other methods to keep your supply going.

Method 1 – Harvest Rubber Trees with the Magic Scythe (Best)

As covered above, head to Beardtree Gorge northeast of Delesyia, find Rubber Trees, and hit them with the Magic Scythe. One swing per tree, then move on to the next. This is the most direct and efficient method. The 6-day cooldown per tree means you should visit multiple trees in the same run to maximize your haul each trip.

You can also technically hit the oozing nodes on Rubber Trees with Healing Force Palm. However, this method requires repeating the process every 3 to 6 days and gives very little return. It is not worth the effort compared to using the scythe.

Method 2 – Gift Thin Hides to Troll Scholars at Scholastone

This is the fastest method if you do not have the Magic Scythe yet, or if you want a quick top-up while your dispatch runs.

  • Head to the Scholastone Research Institute, located west of the Witchwoods.
  • Find the troll scholar NPCs (also called giants or ogres) outside and inside the building.
  • Gift them Thin Hides. Each gift gives +10 Trust.
  • Once you reach +100 Trust with a troll, they will reward you with a random rare material — which includes Rubber, Mercury, or Brimstone.
  • You need 10 gifts of Thin Hide per troll to max out one NPC’s trust.
  • There are multiple troll scholar NPCs at Scholastone. Bring around 150 or more Thin Hides to max out several in one visit and increase your chances of getting Rubber.

This method has some randomness to it. You might get Rubber on the first reward or you might get Mercury or Brimstone. If you need those other materials too, check out our guides on how to get Mercury and how to get Brimstone.

Method 3 – Grow Rubber Trees at Your Camp Farm

This is the most reliable long-term source of Rubber. Here is how to set it up:

  • First, unlock the Ranch and Farm at your camp. Check our guide on how to unlock the ranch and farm if you have not done this yet.
  • Head to Varnia in the far northeast region of the map. Our guide on how to get to Varnia will help if you are unsure of the route.
  • Find the Grocer’s Shop in Varnia and build +100 Trust with Khalid by gifting him Coin Purses.
  • Khalid will then sell you the “Seed Supply Contract – Varnia”. Buy it and consume it from your inventory.
  • This unlocks Kamu, the farm master at Greymane Camp, to sell Rubber Tree Seeds.
  • Plant the seeds on your farm. After several in-game days, the tree matures and can be harvested for Rubber.
  • Important: After harvesting a Rubber Tree, collect the seeds from the top of the tree as well. Rubber does not generate seeds on its own during harvest. If you skip this step, you lose your replanting material.

Rubber Tree Seeds can also be found in the wild south of Fort Perwin in Southern Hernand, and in the swampy terrain of Hernand and Pailune, if you want to start without going to Varnia first.

Method 4 – Gain Trust with Grimrick at Scholastone Institute

There is an additional NPC method outside the Scholastone building. A character named Grimrick sits outside with a book. Offer him a Chipmunk from your inventory and greet him to gain +5 Trust. He will give you a clue pointing toward a scholar NPC nearby. Find that scholar and offer Thin Hide x10 to build Trust with them as well. These interactions can reward Rubber when Trust is high enough.

Stock up on Chipmunks and Thin Hides before heading out. Having them ready means you can complete the full interaction without detours. For building Trust in general, our merchant trust guide has useful tips.

What Is Rubber Used For in Crimson Desert?

Rubber is a crafting material described in-game as a soft, highly elastic substance that blocks water and lightning. It is used for several important crafting recipes:

  • Field Sprayers, Fertilizer Sprayers, and Lubricant Sprayers — farming tools for your camp
  • Olvald’s Expert Logging Axe — a high-tier gathering tool
  • Various advanced Abyss Gear components that require flexible insulation
  • High-tier ship seals for naval crafting

It is worth stocking up on Rubber whenever you can. Demand for it increases the further you progress in the game, especially if you are focused on crafting and camp upgrades.

Tips for Managing the Magic Scythe

  • Keep the dispatch running. Since the scythe breaks after about 15 harvests and cannot be repaired, always have a new dispatch running in the background so you never run out.
  • Stand in the center of resource clusters. The scythe works on an area-of-effect system. Positioning yourself in the middle of a dense patch gets you the most resources per swing.
  • Rotate between Rubber Tree locations. Since each tree has a cooldown, visiting multiple trees across Beardtree Gorge in one trip makes the most of each visit.
  • Combine with camp farming. Growing Rubber Trees at your own camp on top of wild tree harvesting gives you a steady, renewable supply without relying solely on the 6-day cooldown per wild tree.
  • Pair with gathering research. The Efficient Gathering Research from Pororin gives you a 30% chance to collect extra plants while harvesting. Combined with the Magic Scythe, this boosts your yield noticeably.
