TL;DR
- A Rumor Fueled by Greed is a Faction Quest in Demeniss tied to the Reventine Winery.
- Start it by eavesdropping on two strangers from the rooftop near the Reventine Winery.
- Head across to Reventine Monastery — it is on the western edge of the Demeniss region, southeast of the Hills of No Return.
- Find the secret room behind a revolving bookshelf inside the monastery.
- Solve the sliding tile puzzle on the strongbox inside the hidden room.
- You must wear a Mask (or use the Great Thief’s Gloves) to steal the document — looting it counts as theft.
- The reward is the Reventine Monastery Exclusive Document, which can be sold for a solid amount of silver.
- Do not sell the document before starting the quest or you will get locked out of completing it.
A Rumor Fueled by Greed is one of those quests that sounds simple on paper but catches a lot of players off guard. The puzzle inside the strongbox is trickier than anything you have faced earlier in the game, and the hidden bookshelf door is easy to walk right past. This guide covers every step from starting the quest to grabbing the reward without getting caught.

A Rumor Fueled by Greed – Quest Overview
A Rumor Fueled by Greed is a Faction Quest found in the Demeniss region of Crimson Desert. A rumor is going around about a valuable document hidden somewhere inside the Reventine Monastery. Your job is to sneak in, find it, and take it. The quest introduces the eavesdropping mechanic if you have not used it before, and the strongbox puzzle inside the monastery is one of the more complex sliding tile puzzles in the game.
This quest is also connected to the broader Reventine Monastery location, which features in the Hidden Space of the Heart faction quest. If you are working through multiple quests in Demeniss, you may end up visiting this monastery more than once.
How to Start A Rumor Fueled by Greed
To start the quest, head to the Reventine Winery in Demeniss. On the map, look for the winery near the Reventine Monastery area on the western edge of the Demeniss region. There are two strangers talking near the house closest to the notice board. You need to eavesdrop on their conversation to trigger the quest.
Here is how to do it properly:
- Get onto the rooftop above the two strangers or lean against a nearby wall to trigger the Eavesdrop prompt.
- Wait for the “Eavesdrop” prompt to appear on screen. This is essential — the quest will not register if you just stand near them.
- Stay in position and listen until the learning bar fills completely. Do not move away early.
- Once you have learned everything needed, the next quest step will unlock.
Tip: If the eavesdrop prompt does not appear, it may be a spawn or reset issue. Fast-travel to the nearest travel point to reset the area, then come back and try again. This has been reported by multiple players and the reset fix works consistently.

Reventine Monastery Location
The Reventine Monastery sits directly opposite the Reventine Winery. On the world map, it is on the far western edge of the Demeniss region, southeast of the Hills of No Return, and east of the “D” in Demeniss. If you are coming from Hernand, it sits near Hook Rapids on the border between the two regions.
The monastery itself is a large stone building with a round inner courtyard full of doors. It is not hidden — you can walk straight in through the front doors on the north side without needing to climb or break anything to enter.
How to Find the Secret Room
Once inside the monastery, the hidden room with the strongbox is behind a bookshelf that doubles as a secret door. Here is how to get there:
- Enter through the front doors on the north side of the monastery.
- Take an immediate right, then an immediate left.
- Head through the first set of doors you reach.
- Alternatively, walk through the building until you reach the round courtyard with multiple doors. Take the eastern door from the courtyard.
- Once through that door, look to the right side of the room. You will see a library bookshelf.
- Walk straight into the bookshelf — it is a revolving door. It will open and let you through to the hidden room behind it.

Do not look for a button or lever. The bookshelf just opens when you walk into it. Once through, the strongbox is right in front of you on the wall inside the secret room. Interact with it to begin the puzzle.
Important — Equip Your Mask First: Before you interact with the strongbox or loot anything inside, put on a Mask. Taking the document counts as theft, and you will get caught without one. You can also use the Great Thief’s Gloves as an alternative to skip the theft detection entirely. If you need to remove a bounty from a previous theft, check our bounty removal guide.
Reventine Monastery Strongbox Puzzle Solution
The strongbox uses a sliding tile puzzle. The goal is to move the Painting Fragments around the grid to complete the picture, with the bottom-right panel (position X-3, Y-3) left empty at the end.
This is one of the more complex sliding puzzles in the game. If you lose track of where you are mid-sequence, you can back out of the strongbox interaction to reset the board back to its starting position. There is no penalty for resetting — just start the sequence again from the top.
Here is the full step-by-step solution using grid positions (X = column from left, Y = row from top):
- Move 3,2 → down to 3,3
- Move 2,2 → down to 2,3
- Move 2,3 → up to 2,2
- Move 3,3 → left to 2,3
- Move 3,2 → down to 3,3
- Move 2,2 → right to 3,2
- Move 1,2 → right to 2,2
- Move 1,3 → up to 1,2
- Move 2,3 → left to 1,3
- Move 2,2 → down to 2,3
- Move 3,3 → up to 3,2
- Move 2,3 → right to 3,3
- Move 2,2 → down to 2,3
- Move 1,2 → right to 2,2
- Move 1,3 → up to 1,2
- Move 2,3 → left to 1,3
- Move 3,3 → left to 2,3
If you prefer a simplified directional breakdown instead, here is the same solution described by tile position name:
- Step 1: Center Right → Down. Center → Right. Center Left → Right.
- Step 2: Bottom Left → Up. Bottom Center → Left.
- Step 3: Center → Down. Center Left → Right.
- Step 4: Bottom Left → Up. Bottom Center → Left. Bottom Right → Left.
Once the picture is complete, the strongbox will click open. Make sure your Mask is on before you reach inside.

Quest Reward – Reventine Monastery Exclusive Document
The reward for completing the strongbox puzzle is the Reventine Monastery Exclusive Document. There is nothing mechanically special about this item — it has no combat use and no crafting purpose. Its real value is that it sells for a solid amount of silver at any vendor. Some sources report a sale price of around 8 silver, which is a decent return for the time spent.
The quest completion text reads: “You obtained the valuable document concealed in the Reventine Monastery.”
That said, keep one very important thing in mind — if you explored the monastery before picking up this quest and already looted and sold the document, the quest becomes permanently locked. The document does not respawn after being sold. If that has happened to you, unfortunately there is no fix unless you have a save from before the sale. It is a side quest with no major story impact, so missing it is not game-breaking, but it is worth knowing before you clear areas ahead of their faction quests.
Bonus Loot in the Reventine Monastery
While you are inside the monastery, it is worth grabbing a few extra things while you are there:
- On the second floor of the monastery, there is a bookshelf containing the Cloth Armors of the World, Vol. I equipment blueprints. These are easy to miss. Have a look around the upper floor before leaving.
- The monastery is also connected to the Hidden Space of the Heart faction quest, where you speak to a nun for clues about Ulzok. If you have not done that quest yet, check out that guide next.
- The Reventine Monastery area is also a good location for fishing if you need a Leopard Perch for a Greymane request.
Tips Before You Go
- Always equip your Mask before looting any strongbox. You can solve every puzzle without it, but you cannot pick up the reward without it equipped. Put it on before you even start the puzzle to save yourself from having to back out and re-equip mid-loot.
- Back out to reset. If you mess up the sliding tile sequence and lose track of where the tiles are, back out of the strongbox interaction to reset the board. No penalty applies — just restart the sequence.
- Do the quest before exploring. If you explore areas before picking up their related faction quests, you risk looting key items before the quest is active. The Reventine Monastery document is a clear example of this. Always check your Faction Quest board when entering a new region.
- Fast-travel to reset the eavesdrop trigger. If the eavesdrop prompt does not appear at the winery, fast-travel away and come back. This resets the NPC state and the prompt should appear properly on your return.
