Complete Ronald's Request in Crimson Desert. Find Ronald at Howling Hill, get 5 Timber fast, fix the missing Ronald bug, and collect your Medium Bag reward.

TL;DR

  • Ronald’s Request is a Greymanes faction quest at Howling Hill, unlocked at the start of Chapter 5
  • Ronald wants 5 Timber to build a supply record board for the camp
  • Cut nearby trees with a Logging Axe or use Turning Slash to fell them instantly
  • Only regular Timber counts — Fine Timber does not
  • If Ronald is missing, you likely dispatched him on a comrade mission — cancel it or wait for him to return
  • Reward: 1x Medium Bag (3 extra inventory slots), +50 Trust of Ronald, +50 Greymanes Contribution EXP

Ronald’s Request is one of the first faction quests you’ll come across in Crimson Desert. It’s short and simple on paper. But a few things trip players up — mainly finding Ronald himself and knowing exactly what kind of Timber to bring him. This guide walks through the whole thing.

How to Unlock Ronald’s Request

This quest becomes available at the start of Chapter 5. You need to have progressed far enough in the Chapter 4 main story to rescue Yann from prison and complete the Disturbance in the Arena mission. The quest also unlocks right after the Kilnden Workshop main mission.

Once those are done, head to Howling Hill camp. Ronald is near the entrance, close to Ross the Dispatch Coordinator. Walk up to him and he’ll call out to you. Talk to him to start the quest.

Ronald’s concern is straightforward. The Greymanes keep asking Carl for supplies, Carl can’t say no, and the camp is slowly running out of resources. His plan is to put up a board in front of the storage showing everyone exactly how much stock is available. To build it, he needs Timber.

How to Get 5 Timber

Timber comes from chopping down trees. The good news is there are plenty of trees around the Howling Hill camp, so you don’t need to go far.

Method 1 — Use a Logging Axe (Recommended)

The Logging Axe is the dedicated tool for cutting trees. If you don’t have one yet, you can buy it from the Provisioner’s Shop in Hernand or find one in the overworld.

Here’s how to use it:

  1. Equip the Logging Axe from the D-Pad Left radial menu on controller, or F2 on PC
  2. Find a tree near the camp and swing at it
  3. Once the trunk splits into two or three smaller sections, use R2 on PlayStation / RMB on PC to slam the axe down on the horizontal logs
  4. This converts them into Timber and Fine Timber
  5. Repeat until you have 5 Timber

Method 2 — Turning Slash Skill

Don’t have a Logging Axe handy? No problem. The Turning Slash skill fells trees instantly without any tool needed.

On controller, use R1 + R2. On PC, use LMB + RMB together. Walk up to a tree and use the skill to knock it down in one go. Then collect the pieces.

Important — Timber vs Fine Timber

This trips up a lot of people. When you chop trees, you get both Timber and Fine Timber. Only regular Timber counts toward Ronald’s Request. Fine Timber will not complete the objective.

Don’t throw Fine Timber away though. Hold onto it. You’ll need it for Turnali’s Request in Hernand, which asks for exactly that.

Hand in the Timber to Ronald

Once you have 5 Timber in your inventory, head back to Ronald at Howling Hill. Talk to him and hand over the materials. He’ll confirm the timber is solid and durable — exactly what he needs for the board.

After that, the quest completes and you get your reward.

Rewards:

  • 1x Medium Bag (adds 3 inventory slots)
  • +50 Trust of Ronald
  • +50 Greymanes Contribution EXP

The Medium Bag is the real prize here, especially early in the game when inventory space feels tight.

Ronald Is Missing — How to Fix It

This is the most common issue players run into. You complete the objective, go back to Ronald, and he’s just not there. The quest marker points to his spot but he’s nowhere to be found.

This is not a bug. It happens when you dispatched Ronald on a comrade mission before coming back to hand in the Timber.

Here’s how to sort it:

Check which mission he’s on. Talk to Ross the Dispatch Coordinator at Howling Hill. Select the Mission Dispatch option and look for active missions highlighted in gold. Ronald will be listed there if he’s been sent out.

Cancel the mission or wait. You can cancel the dispatch to bring Ronald back to camp immediately. Alternatively, just wait for the mission to run its course and Ronald will return on his own.

Going forward, avoid dispatching Ronald while you have an active quest that needs him at camp. It’s a simple fix once you know what’s happening.

Other fixes if Ronald still won’t interact:

If Ronald is physically at the camp but the interaction isn’t working, try these in order: restart the game entirely, leave the Howling Hill area and return after a short while, or abandon and re-accept the quest to reset the objective tracker. Make sure you have exactly 5 Timber when you approach him — having the wrong amount can sometimes confuse the quest check.

Tips for This Quest

A few quick things worth knowing:

You can also get Timber by looting fallen logs in the environment if you spot them before chopping anything. It’s quicker than cutting a tree if you happen to pass one while exploring.

The Logging Axe can be bought from the Provisioner’s Shop in Hernand if you don’t want to hunt for one in the overworld. It’s cheap and useful across multiple quests.

Ronald’s Request is a good early introduction to the gathering system in Crimson Desert. Once you understand how logging works here, it carries over into a lot of other crafting and upgrading content throughout the game.

Related Greymane Commission Quests

Ronald isn’t the only one at Howling Hill with a request. Several other Greymane characters have their own faction quests around the same time. Here are some others you can knock out alongside this one:
