TL;DR
- Urdavah Research unlocks naturally in Chapter 9 — or earlier by heading north in the Crimson Desert region
- Find Valtus at the bottom of the elevator shaft — bring 3x Bloodstone to unlock the project tree
- If Valtus won’t talk, interact with the golden statue across the hall first
- Red Seaweed Research is the most important unlock — it permanently breaks the Stamina cap
- Red Seaweed Research requires completing Desert Lifestyle and Bioenergy Amplification first
- Red Seaweed Research halts mid-way — gather 1x Red Seaweed from south of Dewhaven in Delesyia to continue
- Research can get “stuck” — always check for local side quests that researchers need completed
- You must return in person to collect rewards before the next branch unlocks
Urdavah Research is one of the most important progression systems in the mid-game. It unlocks the Stamina cap, makes your food significantly more potent, and opens up crafting for some strong weapons and gear. Skipping it means hitting hard walls in combat and exploration that proper research investment would have avoided.
Here’s how to find Valtus, unlock the project tree, and complete every research task.
How to Unlock Urdavah Research

You’ll reach the Crimson Desert region naturally during Chapter 9 as part of the main story. The Urdavah palace is on the main quest path — you pass through it.
If you want to get here earlier, head north in the Crimson Desert region. You’ll find an Abyss Nexus (fast travel point) up the rocky mountain that puts you close to Urdavah. See our guide on how to fast travel in Crimson Desert if you’re not familiar with the Abyss Nexus system.
How to Find Valtus
Once inside Urdavah:
- Take the elevator down to the bottom floor
- Find Valtus, the Research Director, at the bottom of the elevator shaft
- Bring 3x Bloodstone — this is required to unlock the research project tree
- If Valtus won’t speak with you, head across the hallway and interact with the golden statue, then return to him
If you still can’t talk to Valtus, you likely need to progress further in the main story. Complete Chapter 9 first, then return.

All Urdavah Research Tasks
Research tasks run in real time. Long tasks (18–22 hours) require you to advance the in-game time deliberately. See our guide on how to change the time of day in Crimson Desert to speed this up.
| Research Task | Time | Cost | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desert Lifestyle Research | 2 hours | 1.10 Silver | Equipment blueprints for desert gear |
| Bioenergy Amplification Research | 9 hours | 11 Silver | Significant energy gained from cooking |
| Red Seaweed Research | 18 hours | 12 Silver | Max Stamina cap break |
| Wind Energy Fusion Device | 6 hours | 7 Silver | Mission Dispatches: Propeller Spear, Gale Shield, Air Blaster |
| High Capacity Energy Power Device Research | 22 hours | 70 Silver | Mission Dispatches: A.T.A.G. Plating Mk II and Mk III |
| Gold Vein Research | 8 hours | 130 Silver | Reveals Gold Ore cave locations on the map |
| Circulating Energy Research | 20 hours | 100 Silver | Accessories of the World Vol. IV Blueprint |

Which Tasks to Prioritize
Red Seaweed Research is your top priority. The Stamina cap is one of the most restrictive progression barriers in the game. Stamina powers your dodging, climbing, flying, and heavy attacks. Breaking that cap makes every combat encounter and exploration challenge noticeably easier.
However, Red Seaweed Research has prerequisites. You must complete Desert Lifestyle Research first, then Bioenergy Amplification Research, before Red Seaweed Research becomes available. Plan your Silver spending accordingly.
Bioenergy Amplification is also excellent on its own. It makes all cooked food more potent — meaning every healing item you eat goes further. Pair this with our guide on how to cook the best healing food in Crimson Desert to maximize the benefit.
Wind Energy Fusion Device unlocks the Propeller Spear, Gale Shield, and Air Blaster dispatches. If you’re investing in ranged or aerial combat, this is worth completing early.
Note: your Health is locked at Level 11 until you acquire Abyss Cells through research. See our guide on how to get max health in Crimson Desert and how to get Abyss Cells to understand that unlock path.
Red Seaweed Research Halts Mid-Way
Be aware that Red Seaweed Research stops by itself at around the 9-hour mark. The game doesn’t warn you clearly when this happens.
To resume it:
- Return to Urdavah and face Valtus from the elevator
- Take the stairs on the right
- Speak with the Urdavah Institute Research Assistant
- Head south of Dewhaven in Delesyia to gather 1x Red Seaweed
- Bring it back to the Research Assistant to resume the project
After this, Red Seaweed Research will complete and your Stamina cap will permanently increase.
Why Research Gets Stuck
Research projects can halt unexpectedly for two reasons:
Local side quests — Researchers sometimes need help with a nearby task before they’ll continue working. If a project stops mid-run, your map will mark the researcher’s location. Head there and resolve whatever they need. Check our how to research in Crimson Desert guide for a full overview of how the research system works across all regions.
Reward collection — You must physically return to Valtus to collect rewards from a completed task before the next branch becomes available. The system doesn’t unlock automatically. Make a habit of returning after every completed task.
What About Research in Other Regions?
Urdavah is just one of several research institutes across the game. When you reach Delesyia, you’ll find three separate institutes — Gorthak Ironworks and others — each with their own research trees focused on military gear, mechs, and mineral efficiency.
For the full picture of all research institutes and what they offer, see our guide on how to research in Crimson Desert.
